First-time guest Alejandro Riera joins Kerry and Collin to talk about the Chicago-based family comedy "Nothing Like The Holidays," which came out in 2008 and features a predominantly Puerto Rican cast. This follows the "Family Stone" and "This Christmas" formula of having all the grown-up kids coming home for the Christmas season, all of whom are facing major crossroads in heir lives. Most of it works, some of it doesn't, but it does make a for a truly unique Chicago-based film. Why aren't there more films like it? Did the filmmakers miss an opportunity with John Leguizamo and Debra Messing's characters? What is the proper way to take a tree down in your front yard? All this, plus three more films from the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" book, in which two films from Music Box Theater's recent 70mm film festival come into the discussion. Book films covered: "Great Expectations" (1946) "Playtime" (1967) "The Searchers" (1956)
On today's episode I have 3x Emmy Winning writer, producer, and the king of the fast food review, Bill Oakley! Bill is somebody that I have wanted to have on the show for quite some time now. How many movies have women directors? Can you name one outside of Greta Gerwig? Andrea Thompson from https://www.areelofonesown.com/ runs The Film Girl Film Festival held this year from March 23, 24, and 31 at The Music Box Theater in Chicago, IL. It's a celebration of women in cinema who help continue to push the boundaries of art. I spoke with Andrea about the state of female recognition in Hollywood, the diversity The Film Girl Film Festival represents, and what it takes to be a film critic. We go to the movies for magic. To laugh, to cry, to care… at least that's what Nicole Kidman says in the preview that runs before films start. We chat about our favorite flicks (and those that missed the mark!) with Brandon Pope, anchor at CW-26 and host of Season 4 of WBEZ's Making Podcast, Michi Trota, Hugo Award winning editor and culture critic, and Cody Dericks, seasonal manager at the Music Box Theater and film critic for the website Next Best Picture.
This is the one you've been screaming for! On this final episode of our Halloween-obsessed October, we're all about the movies. Specifically—horror movies (no shit?). And since the Music Box Theater has been terrorizing Chicago all month with their “Bride of Music Box of Horrors” series (not to mention last weekend's infamous, annual and SOLD OUT 24 hour horror marathon) — we thought we'd recruit the theater's sleep deprived general manager Ryan Oestreich to help us pick the BEST scary movies ever made. Did we succeed? Probably not. But here it is anyway. Happy Halloween!!!
The feature film, Anchorage, is a true indie film that was shot in 5 days and created on a self-funded, budget of only $54,000. The film, which was originally planned to be a short, has gone on to receive 11 awards and 10 nominations across 17 festivals. The film's team has been independently producing a theatrical tour, across the US and in the UK. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Scott Monahan, Dakota Loesch, Erin Naifeh, and Spencer Showalter to discuss: Getting coverage in big publications like The Guardian Developing a short into a feature using the same budget Selling family heirlooms in order to finance the film The process of shooting in the high desert for five days Letting actors move around and do what they wanted to do Putting your crew together based on personality not talent or budget Learning how to do an assembly cut before bringing on the editor Cutting and editing depending on what feels right to the story Playing at Music Box Theater alongside Oppenheimer and Asteroid City The 3 most powerful words you can say as a director Memorable Quotes “The movie changed from a short to a feature, but the budget was the same.” [7:40] “We had structure but we also had freedom to improvise and be organic.” [9:35] “Sometimes it's more important what other people bring to your project than what you are bringing to your project.” [35:07] “We're not good will hunting, we are bad will hunting.” [41:37] Resources: Anchorage | Official Trailer Anchorage IG/FB/X: @anchoragemovie Anchorage | Deeper Into Movies Screening (FREE) YES, Manchester | September 6th 7:30pm https://dice.fm/event/gax26-anchorage-qa-6th-sep-yes-the-pink-room-manchester-tickets?lng=en-US Anchorage | Deeper Into Movies Screening (FREE) TT Liquor, London | September 9th 3:30pm https://dice.fm/event/l5d6r-anchorage-qa-9th-sep-tt-liquor-store-london-tickets?lng=en-US Anchorage | Curzon Q&A Screening September 12th Curzon Hoxton 6:40pm https://www.curzon.com/ticketing/seats/HOX1-12139/ Learn more about your ad choices. Our host this week checks in from his public access studio. It's crazy that another election is already around the corner. We got some great news…the price of gas is coming down! However, great news never lasts long. Inflation continues to rise. The World Cup is here. The US team has been eliminated, as if they ever had a chance of actually winning. Lewis wraps up his tour in Florida this weekend. After that, our host has a nice break from the road. Even though Lewis is off the road, he doesn't want you to stop sending in your rants! Please keep them coming. As always, please remember to take care of each other. It's the most important thing we can do for one another. This week's live rants come from the Warner Theater in Torrington, Connecticut and the Borgata's Music Box Theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But in this new era of paranormal disclosure, the false prophets coming to us from beyond the veil aren't baring vampiric fangs or cackling like hags—they are presenting themselves as angels, spirit guides, or dearly departed loved ones. Rather than fright, victims express being filled with almost orgasmic levels of joy, peace, and love after encountering these beings. And while these experiences might bring on a temporary high, these “angelic” entities have the same end game as their historical “demonic” counterparts—to lure us into the arms of an awaiting messiah—their messiah, not ours." In honor of Ravinia's announcement this week of their 2022 concert lineup, we go back to InPark Track's first episode and the first in a three-part series on the creation of Ravinia's Music Box Theater, an immersive theatrical experience that opened in the summer of 2021.
In our FIRST SEASON FINALE, Chicago film historians Adam Carston and Mike Vanderbilt look back at the cheerfully odd double feature of SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS and SANTA'S MAGIC KINGDOM that opened at the Loop Theater on December 18, 1964. We'll be recreating this classic double feature at Music Box Theater on December 20, 2021!
Chicago film historians Adam Carston and Mike Vanderbilt are joined by film noir preservationist Alan K. Rode as they look back at this quintessential crime double feature of WHITE HEAT (1949) and TOO LATE FOR TEARS (1949) that opened at the McVickers Theater on October 28, 1949. Mike and Adam will be presenting this double feature at Chicago's Music Box Theater on November 30, 2021.
In the final episode of our three-part series, we go behind the scenes to learn about the equipment and technology powering Ravinia's Music Box Theater. We close by talking with Leonard Bernstein's daughter Jamie about the impact of the attraction on the community. Grab your InPark Magazine subscription here.
In the second episode of this three-part series, we explore the Ravinia Music Box Theater experience and find out more about how the attraction was created. Grab your InPark Magazine subscription here.
Coinciding with our first live event at Music Box Theater, Chicago film historians Adam Carston and Mike Vanderbilt look back at a double featuring a local short and a film that at the time was developing a cult following, MEDUSA CHALLENGER and HAROLD AND MAUDE that opened at the Biograph Theatre on August 25, 1978. On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, I am recording at The Houdini Museum in NYC with Director Carl Andress, whose long time collaboration with Tony nominee Charles Busch is continuing at the Cherry Lane Theatre with Charles' hilarious new show The Confession of Lily Dare, running through March 5. The Confession of Lily Dare is part of Primary Stages 35th Anniversary Season. The Confession of Lily Dare tells the story of one woman’s tumultuous passage from convent girl to glittering cabaret chanteuse to infamous madame of a string of brothels—all while hiding her undying devotion to the child she was forced to abandon. This comic melodrama celebrates the gauzy “confession film” tearjerkers of early 1930s pre-code cinema, such as The Sin of Madelon Claudet, Frisco Jenny, and Madame X. The Confession of Lily Dare will play at The Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street) through March 5. Click here for tickets! The Houdini Museum is located at 213 West 35th Street, 4th floor, in Midtown Manhattan. Like what you hear? Then become a member of my Patreon Page for exclusive behind-the-scene perks! One of the greatest joys to experience in the fine city of Chicago is seeing a screening of a classic film at The Music Box Theater. It has been my favorite movie theater for quite some time and when the opportunity came to talk to the general manager of this theater, I could not have been more thrilled. Ryan Oestreich has a long history with the film industry, particularly film festival programming and theater management. He is now able to combine both of his passions alongside Josh Goldbloom, to put together a film festival that I can't wait to cover this summer: The Cinepocalypse! Ryan and I briefly cover his past experience and then we launch into our endless excitement for the many films and special events happening from June 21st to the 28th. You can listen to us passionately talk about some of the titles we're looking forward to of course, but also be sure to visit the links below to buy a festival badge or tickets to any number of screenings coming up in about a month. Ryan is a hard-working, energetic guest with a lot to contribute so even if you're not in the Chicagoland area and have no familiarity with the Music Box, I have no doubt that as a movie fanatic, you'll find a lot to enjoy throughout our conversation.
