The Nick Taylor Horror Show
Remembering Stuart Gordon with Brian Yuzna, Larry Fessenden, and Graham Skipper [Episode 66]

The Nick Taylor Horror Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2021 101:23

Welcome back to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! As we put the literal horror show of 2020 behind us, I felt it was important to kick off this year with an episode about someone we lost last year, who left a tremendous void in the horror community, and that, of course, is Stuart Gordon.  To call Stuart a boundary pusher would be an understatement. Stuart taught entire generations of horror directors how not just to push boundaries but decimate them, and by doing so, show audiences the true power of horror. Stuart meant a lot of things to a lot of people, and one of the most recurring themes of conversations I've had with people about him is just how dedicated he was to mentorship and the craft of art.  I was fortunate enough to have conducted one of the last interviews with Stuart last year, and I highly recommend listening to that conversation if you haven't already. My conversation with Stuart was right after he had written his autobiography so he was extremely reflective and was incredibly generous with his wisdom, so check that episode out if you have not already. It's great, and I was pinching myself the entire time.   For this episode, I wanted to dig deeper into Stuart's prolific life by talking to some of those who were lucky enough to work with him. This episode features three separate conversations about Stuart with Brian Yuzna, Larry Fessenden, and Graham Skipper. Each person reflects on Stuart's life, his legacy, and what they learned from him, and I was really floored at how much insight came out of each of these conversations. Each interview turned out to be practical, revealing, and extremely fun. So, with that in mind, I hope you enjoy these three conversations about the life and work of one of our fallen masters of horror, Stuart Gordon. I'm going to start with perhaps Stuart's closest collaborator, Brian Yuzna.  Brian is a man who needs no introduction. A writer, director, producer, Brian Yuzna produced multiple movies that Stuart directed, including Reanimator, Dagon, From Beyond, and Dolls. Brian directed one of my personal favorite deep cuts, Society, which if you haven't seen, do yourself a favor and watch it, ideally with Joe Bob on Shudder. Brian also directed Bride of Reanimator, Silent Night Deadly Night 4, Beyond Reanimator, Return of the Living Dead 3, which is fucking insane and fantastic, and not enough people talk about it.  Brian and Stuart have a famous collaboration and, in partnership with each other were responsible for some quintessential horror classics. As a duo, they were unstoppable and I was very fortunate to be able to speak with Brian in-depth about their collaboration. Without further ado, please enjoy this conversation with Brian Yuzna. Larry Fessenden is an American director, producer, writer, and actor. Larry's career highlights include Habit, Wendigo, The Last Winter, and 2019's Depraved. I always love talking to Larry. As far as indie filmmakers, Larry is such the real deal, and I like to call him the East Coast Corman because he's not only a prolific director but he's mentored and groomed multiple directors like Ti West, Jen Wexler, and Jim Mickle. Larry and Stuart never actually got to work together on a film, but for years had a number of projects that they were developing. This conversation was mostly about what Stuart inspired in Larry as a filmmaker, as well as some details about the lost projects they were working on that unfortunately never came to be. Lots of great wisdom here. Please enjoy this reflection on Stuart Gordon with the great Larry Fessenden.  Graham Skipper is an American actor, director, and writer. He's directed multiple horror movies, including Space Clown and Sequence Break, now streaming on Shudder. He also reprised the role of Doctor Herbert West in Re-Animator: The Musical and starred in multiple Joe Begos movies, including Almost Human and The Mind's Eye. Graham worked very closely with Stuart on Reanimator the Musical and was lucky enough to have developed a close relationship with him. There are multiple wonderful lessons Graham learned from Stuart, and he was gracious enough to share them with me - so please enjoy this conversation with Graham Skipper. Thanks again for listening!   ----- Produced by Simpler Media

As the Chattanooga Film Festival draws ever nearer, Eric and I continue on with our pre-coverage of this year's CFF by recounting previous years of CFF. On tonight's episode, we discuss films from the 2017 Chattanooga Film Festival. As I mentioned on the previous episode, the Chattanooga Film Festival is so much more than just the movies...it is a cinematic experience and an opportunity to talk with other people who love cinema just as much as you do (including many of the people involved in making the films screened at CFF)...but, obviously the movies are a pretty major part. And while I wish that each episode leading up to CFF could be a deep-dive into every single movie screened each year, that just isn't possible. So, instead, each week we will be focusing on a few movies that really highlight the Chattanooga Film Festival experience from each of the previous years that I have attended (this will be the fourth year that I have attended CFF and the first year that Eric has attended) as a way to give Eric (and our listeners) a glimpse of what CFF is like. The criteria for the movies picked from each year are: 1) they are movies that I saw during the film festival that year, 2) they are movies that are available online (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), 3) they are movies that represented the experience of the film fest, rather than just being a good movie (there are some movies that are great movies, but you could get roughly the same experience seeing them in any movie theater...and there are other movies that might not necessarily be as "good," but it will be an experience that you are not likely to have outside of a film festival). With those criteria in mind, the films from 2017 that are covered in tonight's episode are: Dave Made A Maze, Feeding Time, Sequence Break, The Dragon Lives Again and The Zodiac Killer(both presented by the American Genre Film Archive), David Lynch: The Art Life, Dayveon, and The Devil's Candy, along with some brief highlights about The Monster Squad and The Void. We end the episode talking about The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick - by Mallory O'Meara. The Chattanooga Film Festival will be screening The Creature from the Black Lagoon, pairing it with a talk by Mallory O'Meara. So, in preparation, Eric and I have both been reading her book (and we both very highly recommend it!) For tickets or more information (including complete lists of films screened each year) go to chattfilmfest.org - and be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter to stay up to date on announcements for CFF 2019. And be sure to come back soon for more cinematic discussions on The Gargyle Podcast!! Up next will be a break from our CFF coverage as we interview Bill Fulkerson and Kyle Kuchta on their documentary, Survival of the Film Freaks (which won a Gargyle Award during our Knoxville Horror Film Fest coverage for "movie that I am most excited to share with someone else"). After that, we will return to our CFF pre-coverage by discussing some of the films from CFF 2018. gargylereviews.wixsite.com/thegargyle music from besound.com

Those last three weren't on our list, but we watched them anyway. We haven't followed this list very well. Two more episodes, and it will be our 50th episode! The second review, Sequence Break, transitions us into next week and our focus on Graham Skipper's fear of going insane! I've discussed both of these films on past episodes, including a fairly in-depth discussion with Graham Skipper about his film, Sequence Break. Up next in my coverage of the 2017 Chattanooga Film Festival is:  Sequence Break Sequence Break was written and directed by Graham Skipper.  I loved his acting in Feeding Time and Beyond the Gates (which was one of my favorite movies of last year), so I was really excited about his directorial debut!   Between feature films, short films, partial films, and live shows, I saw 21 films at the Chattanooga Film Festival.  So, be sure to follow me at gargylereviews.blogspot.com and at facebook.com/thegargyle to catch all of my reviews.  And check out the overview episode that I did with Mass Listeria at masslisteriapodcast.com.       music for The Gargyle Podcast by Bensound

Mel welcomes guest (and recent on-set collaborator) Graham Skipper to the podcast. Graham is probably best known for essaying the role of Herbert West in REANIMATOR: THE MUSICAL…however, he's steadily been making a name for himself on the independent horror circuit with acclaimed turns in features like ALMOST HUMAN, BEYOND THE GATES, and THE MIND'S EYE, among many others. Most recently, Graham has wrapped principal photography on his first(ish) feature, SEQUENCE BREAK (which, incidentally, Mel was the 1st A.D. on). Mel talks with Graham about his particular journey, from stage to screen to setting up shots, and why he owes a great debt to Norm from "Cheers". It all culminates in a special one-on-one edition of "Greenlit Or Bullshit". This is also our inaugural installment as part of the B&E Podcast Network! This summer (technically spring/summer), Mel landed to back-to-back gigs on California-lensed genre features. Both were in the A.D. department…and if you're a fan of the podcast you might know that Mel has had some recent "issues" with that type of work. As such, it was definitely poised to be an interesting several weeks. He thought it might be a good idea to keep an audio diary during the shoot. Here are the ones pertaining to the first shoot - Graham Skipper's SEQUENCE BREAK. (Hopefully, Graham himself will be on the podcast soon to discuss things as well). Thanks to Jeff Gameface for the lyrical inspiration for the title. Oddly enough, that song also quotes some Texas Is The Reason lyrics…from Mel's favorite TITR song, actually. We think that's some nice synchronicity. (On that note…you'll hear more of Jeff in our world soon, stay tuned). Info on SEQUENCE BREAK can be found here: http://www.blumhouse.com/2016/06/10/graham-skippers-directorial-debut-sequence-break-begins-production/
