We are thrilled to learn more about this family building option, and to hear from a surrogate and intended parent: two lives forever changed by surrogacy. About Our Guest  EMMA SWARTZ is a North Shore mom who welcomed a baby boy via surrogacy in October 2022. Emma and her husband lost their first born in June of 2020 when she was 27 weeks pregnant, and she went into cardiac arrest. Miraculously she survived and after 100 plus days in the ICU, Emma began her healing journey. It was a long road learning how to walk again, regaining her strength and grieving the loss of her son. A year or so later she began IVF, hopeful that she and her husband could make embryos for a surrogate. After 3 rounds of IVF, Emma and her husband were able to transfer their single embryo to a superhero gestational carrier. Emma is currently a stay at home mom, but makes it her life mission to do what she can to make sure this doesn't happen to others, as well as give hope to those who are going through their own struggles with infertility.   ASHLEIGH DONAHUE is a South Shore mama of two amazing little girls, ages 7 and 4. Dean offers his perspective on why one might need a lawyer for surrogacy and the legal aspects of it that are important for both intended parents and surrogates to understand. He also shares his background and experience working in the field of surrogacy law and how it has evolved over the past two decades. Dean then goes on to review the legal complexities of surrogacy and the importance of working with a lawyer to ensure that the surrogacy process is done legally and ethically. Listeners will learn about the behind-the-scenes work that goes on during a surrogacy journey and how a legal team can support intended parents during the process. The challenges that arose during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and how the legal team at Circle Surrogacy helped intended parents during that time are also explored. Today's episode is a valuable resource for anyone considering surrogacy – or for those who are currently in the process – as it provides a clear understanding of the legal aspect of surrogacy and how it can help ensure a smooth and successful journey for all involved.Episode Highlights:Dean's professional historyHow surrogacy law has changed over the yearsThe Baby M decisionThe primary role of a lawyer in surrogacy Some of the key aspects of the legal process of surrogacyHow the legal contract is usedWorking with a good agencyThe relationship between a lawyer and intended parents during the surrogacy processNavigating the legal aspects of surrogacyHow the legal team at Circle Surrogacy helped intended parents during COVID-19Quotes:"Pretty much trial by fire, learned very quickly the ins and outs of surrogacy law back in 2003-2004.""I didn't know anything about surrogacy law other than the kind of famous Baby M decision that every family law professor goes over in school.""A lot of the expectations for the journey are sort of worked out in that contract phase at the very beginning. So it's not something that's coming up at week 20, at week 24.”"The relationship between a lawyer and intended parents is one of support and guidance throughout the surrogacy journey.""A lot of it is negotiating those small things...making sure things are keeping kind of in the norms -  that you're not having someone who's taking advantage.""And then you get kind of the more intense issues like termination or abortion or selective reduction when the parents have certain rights to request such things.""We were talking to contacts in the Senate and the House and the State Department, and we all, using our contacts, came up with kind of a pretty easy process, but a process to get an exemption for parents.""So there was this national interest exemption that happened. So as a legal team here, we kind of helped create the form documents to get those ready."“You're going to be better off - not only you, but your surrogate, your egg donor, are going to be better protected when you work with attorneys that have experience and that know this stuff.”Links:Circle Surrogacy

Episode 12: Surrogacy Support For Parents and Surrogates

The Family Circle

Play Episode Play 19 sec Highlight Listen Later Jan 3, 2023 35:19

Today's episode of The Family Circle is a special one, with guest host Jen Rachman, who's a Parent Outreach Associate at Circle, a social worker, and a parent through surrogacy. She's here to host a discussion of the types of support that can be helpful during a surrogacy journey, whether you're an intended parent or a surrogate. Jen opens the episode by talking about the importance of having a support network when going into a surrogacy and how Circle can become part of that as a professional agency. She also emphasizes Circle's role in connecting intended parents with a community of others going through the same process and introduces Carlos Dolan, another surrogate parent, who shares his experience of Circle's communities.Next, Jen welcomes her colleague Alana Gorden, Manager of Surrogate Screening and Support at Circle, who's here to discuss the surrogate's side of the journey. Alana explains the support Circle provides for surrogates, emphasizing that their focus is understanding what the surrogate wants from the process in order to provide the best level of support. She talks through the team assigned to each surrogate and the hands-on support they provide, as well as other support channels, including Circle's Facebook page and mentorship program. Alana then introduces Jessi, an experienced Circle surrogate, who shares her experiences of surrogacy and how Circle has supported her through them, especially the staff and the members of the Facebook community.Episode Highlights:The types of support Circle provides Parent networking and community How Circle supports surrogates The journey from the surrogate's point of view The Circle Facebook community and surrogate ambassador programQuotes:“Regardless of where you are in your research, or your steps, or your planning, utilizing the supports that are there and being able to connect with others that get it, I think, is an important aspect of this experience because a sense of community on both sides of this equation is, I think, incredibly substantial and important.”“Everyone knows people who are going through pregnancy but going through surrogacy is different. And the fact that Circle gave us an opportunity to connect with other parents that knew or were feeling the same things as us was great.”“How Jessie might have utilized her support could be really different than how another surrogate utilizes her support. And that's okay. We are here to really give our surrogates the experience that she is needing and that she is looking for to make all this happen. Because at the end of the day, we want her to have the best experience possible.”“I've been in other surrogacy Facebook groups before, but the communication and openness in the Circle Facebook group is unlike anything I have ever seen. So, not only having a ton of women on there to speak with and talk about. I learned so much. The surrogates really care about other women and care to be there and care to help people.”“Some women use the Facebook page, some would prefer a one-on-one, some don't really need us, and they know we're here, and we will be there for them if something comes up. So, I think there's just so many different ways that support pops up in a surrogacy journey, and that we want to do for our surrogates and to make the experience as best as possible.”Helpful links from the episode:Parenthood through surrogacyBecoming a surrogateConnect with the Circle team (email: info@circlesurrogacy.com)

When you tell your kids the story of how they came to be, is the woman who delivered them identified by a face and a name? That's a decision that every gay dad has to make when it comes to having kids through surrogacy or adoption. In this episode we explored two ways of keeping in touch with the birthmother (for adoptive kids) or the gestational surrogate (for IVF and surrogacy) as part of gay dads' children's birth story. Some adoptive parents choose to have an 'open adoption,' where the child gets to meet the birthmother. Parents who go through surrogacy sometimes keep in touch with the surrogate and have their kids meet her when they are old enough. Relationship with the Surrogate There are some dads whose surrogacy journey ties them emotionally to their surrogate—as a result a lifetime friendship is developed; for others, the relationship with the surrogate dissolves due to distance and… life.  Heather Manoijlovic, a two-time surrogate for gay dads and a surrogate coordinator at Circle Surrogacy, spoke from her experience and from the experience of working with other surrogates about the type of relationships and expectations between surrogates and intended parents. ‘Are You My Birthmother?' Erik Alexander from New Orleans (AKA ‘NOLA Papa') blogs about his and his husband's choice to pursue open adoption with their eldest daughter. Despite fears of reunifications (child being returned by a court to the birth parents), the couple were open to the possibility of having their child's birthmother in some sort of touch with them. When they were matched, it was pretty clear that a large part of the birthmother's choice was for her child to be adopted by a gay couple. This was not only because her brother is gay, but also, as Ethan Cohan mentioned in the previous episode of our podcast, some women seek to maintain their ‘mother' status by making sure no other parent will be called ‘mom' by the adoptive child. Erik and his husband's adoption process was supposed to take 5 years but was actually completed in 3.5 weeks! In our interview he talked about his fear, his ability to be honest with his daughter and also about what happened when their daughter figured out who her birthmother was. Bringing a biological baby into the world can cost $180,000. For twins it can be around a quarter million. The biggest question is: Can we make it cheaper? Through our podcast we have met so many dads in various stages of the parenthood journey. But whether it’s in gay dad Facebook groups or in face-to-face interaction, there’s no doubt that the biggest issue gay dads tackle is the cost of surrogacy. In our season premiere of Daddy Squared we decided to dive into the costs of surrogacy and try to figure out how flexible (downward, we mean) these costs are. The first step for us was to find a surrogacy agency that we can trust and that agrees to be transparent with us on the money issue. Our motto was: no hidden costs. Yan conducted research by asking gay dads in Facebook groups and dads in the community on our Instagram account. In the research, Circle Surrogacy was the #1 agency that dads were happy with in terms of client service and support. We turned to Circle Surrogacy asked to talk about money, and surprisingly (to us) we were answered quickly and warmly. — A quick disclosure: Circle Surrogacy, through this process has also become a sponsor of Daddy SQR podcast, but in our episode they speak generally about options, not specifically about themselves, and their openness has been truly refreshing. According to Sam Hyde, President of Circle Surrogacy, costs can be flexed up or flexed down based on small choices you can make along the journey. Examples include travel costs, surrogate location, egg donor history, etc. “When you’re going through a journey like this there are, unfortunately, quite a few ‘fingers in the pie’ with regard to costs,” Hyde explains, “and I think that what drives confusion sometimes, or anxiety around the costs, is the different parties that are involved.” “To break it down at a high level, there are a couple of big buckets you’ll be looking at when it comes to cost,” Sam says. “The first one that I list, just because of my position, is the agency fee. This is the cost associated with the surrogacy or egg donation agency that will help you and holds your hand along the journey.” During our research we realized that some agencies (Circle, for example) include in their fees all the legal costs as well. Other agencies use an outside fertility lawyer that bills separately, so when comparing agency fees make sure you’re comparing “apples to apples.” “The second bucket,” continued Sam Hyde, “is compensation for the actual women helping you along on this journey. So that’s compensation for the egg donor to go through a cycle to produce the eggs that create the embryos, and compensation for the gestational surrogate who carries the child. “The third big bucket you’ll run into is costs around the actual medical care that needs to be done. You’ll work with a clinic that you’ll pay for the medical work of the journey. “The last big bucket that you’ll run into is about maternity insurance. This is usually a point of confusion for some of our international clients who come from countries with a universal coverage. In the U.S. we need to put insurance vehicles in place for both the egg donor and the surrogate.” Conclusion: In the case of Circle Surrogacy, your surrogacy costs split between two parties: agency and fertility clinic.
