We might think that what makes our team culture great (or awful) is different from what supports our learning and development. Are they so different, though?  In this week's episode of The Mindtools L&D Podcast, Ross D and Gemma are joined by L&D professional turned Culture Manager, Lois Ratcliffe to discuss:  what ‘culture' is and how it gets measured;  what it takes to have a good feedback culture;  the features of a learning culture.  Lois refers to the three layers of organisational culture proposed by Shein. To find out more about Shein, here's one of our articles on Achieving Culture Change.   In ‘What I Learned This Week', Lois recommended The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells for a thought-provoking read with an AI theme.   If you're feeling time-poor, Gemma recommended the book 4000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman.  For more from us, visit mindtools.com. For Endometriosis Awareness Month, the IPA On.. Talent Matters Podcast discusses this condition. Host Antonia Stearn is joined by Rebecca Hill, Associate at Over The Bloody Moon, the world's largest collective of menopause, andropause and menstrual health experts, and Emmy Greener, People and Culture Manager at Mediaplus UK. Despite endometriosis affecting 1 in 10 women, awareness surrounding it is still very poor. The condition causes cells similar to the lining of the womb to grow elsewhere in the body, with varying symptoms like debilitating pain, fatigue, low mood, heavy periods and pain when you go to the toilet amongst others. Antonia, Rebecca and Emmy explore the perception of pain, medical misogyny, the lack of research into women's health issues, and the worrying stat that diagnosis time for endometriosis is still 8 years and 10 months on average. This debilitating condition can have severe impacts on the retention of staff and wellbeing. Emmy also discusses her company's menstrual health policies, which aim to create a more equitable workplace while Rebecca shares her personal journey with endometriosis.

Get ready to virtually experience the working world of IKEA on Roblox as the doors to the virtual store have opened. The opening of IKEA on Roblox follows a recruitment campaign launched on 3rd June, which offered people the opportunity to apply for one of 10 paid roles in the virtual store. Over 178,000 applications were received across Ireland and the UK, with 18,087 coming from Ireland. Two of the 10 successful applicants live in Ireland, in counties Dublin and Kerry. The lucky 10 applicants have now been selected and will kick off their virtual IKEA roles from today. Michael from Dublin, said, "I'm very excited and extremely happy to be chosen to be part of this new and innovative project and I can't wait to see where it goes in the long run and I hope I can be part of future projects. This current project has been fun and interesting throughout my whole experience so far." Alongside the paid players the broader Roblox community, gamers and IKEA fans are invited to explore a virtual IKEA store, wander around the home furnishings showroom and visit the famous Swedish Food Market and Bistro. Players can also venture into the IKEA world of work and take on a role as a virtual co-worker, serving up endless amounts of hotdogs and flexing their interior design skills to level-up and get promoted. All with the chance to win exclusive IKEA UGCs. Much like IKEA co-workers in real life, players in the game have the ability to develop their own unique career journey at their own pace and in any direction. Whether that be by taking on a more senior role, a move sideways into a different function developing new skills, or continuing to expand their experience in the same role. There's no set path to how you can grow your career at IKEA, where career progression is focused on helping co-workers develop their careers in their own way, and not just in a linear direction. Roles available in 'The Co-Worker' game are inspired by real-life jobs and have been curated to offer a glimpse into the opportunities available at IKEA while showcasing the brand's unique approach to careers. Roles include: 1. Sales Co-Worker - where players guide customers to products they are interested in, as well as keep the Showroom up to the IKEA standard. 2. Interior Design Co-Worker - where players are required to put together a room-set, following a design brief and pick the correct items of furniture and place them in the right places. 3. Sales Team Leader - where players recommend products to NPC customers based on their specific requirements. 4. Food Team Leader - where players will man the famous Swedish Bistro, serving food and drink to customers - meatballs anyone? Darren Taylor, Country People and Culture Manager, IKEA UK, and Ireland: "Today has been a long time coming and we're extremely excited to launch IKEA on Roblox. We are always looking for new ways to attract and inspire the next generation of co-workers to imagine a career at IKEA. 'The Co-Worker' game is a fantastic way to give players a taste of our culture and insight into what makes the world of work at IKEA so special." Carrie Segil is the People and Culture Manager at The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, and Duncan Gilchrist is a Climate and Natural Resources Policy Associate at The Nature Conservancy in Colorado. Both Carrie and Duncan are deeply involved with TNC Colorado's Catalyst Fund, a cutting-edge conservation funding initiative that supports forward-looking projects that enable innovation and rapid learning, both to test new ideas and to build greater capacity for innovation over the long term. - One of the Catalyst Fund's most notable projects involves agrivoltaics, which is the simultaneous use of land for both solar energy production and agriculture. The project is called the Agrivoltaics Retrofit Partnership, and it's a Boulder-based partnership between TNC, Jack's Solar Garden, Drylands Agroecology Research, Boulder Housing Partners, and a conservation-justice / community outreach partner called FLOWS. The project aims to achieve multiple conservation and community objectives, including restoring degraded land, producing perennial plants with medicinal, economic, and indigenous cultural value, and providing a host of benefits to local marginalized community members– benefits that we discuss in this episode. - In this episode, we talk in detail about this specific agrivoltaics project, as well as some of the other innovative projects that are being pushed forward thanks to support from the Catalyst Fund. We discussed how and why TNC Colorado decided to create the Catalyst Fund in the first place, and the need to push boundaries and take risks in the conservation space. Carrie offers insights into specific Catalyst projects, such as virtual fencing for bison, and Duncan discusses all the details about this agrivoltaics project– including the genesis of the idea, the challenges of the projects, and why it has proven to be so successful and replicable. We also discuss how policy on the state and federal level is creating more opportunities for agrivoltaics, why it garners bipartisan support, and lessons learned from all of the Catalyst Fund projects. - I was so impressed with Carrie and Duncan's enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to innovation, and I learned so much from this conversation. Be sure to check out the episode notes to learn more about everything we discussed, and please share this episode with any friends or colleagues who might find it valuable.  Thanks so much for listening, I hope you enjoy!   ---   This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Då är "The Ikea Way" inte rätt arbetsplats. As AI advances with technologies such as GPT-4, companies are beginning to come to terms with the fact that “soft skill” education is crucial in creating a future industry for the retail world. GPT-4 functions as a natural language processing tool driven by tech that can use its language model for hard skills such as answering questions and assisting with tasks such as composing emails, essays, and code. How, exactly, is the rapid development of AI and the hard skills it is equipped with influencing the retail industry's workforce? On this episode of Retail Refined, Host Melissa Gonzalez, live at Shoptalk Europe 2023, discusses the importance of adapting to new technology for the future of IKEA with the Group People & Culture Manager of IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), Ulrika Biesèrt. With that in mind, Ingka Group and IKEA plan on implementing 3,500 new jobs and opening 17 new locations in the United States alone. Already, the group has invested over ten million euros on educational programs to promote said soft skills as “hard skills.”“Technology, advancement, digitalization, and automatization will have a huge impact on us as coworkers and we [as a company] really need to understand [as to] what we need to do to reskill and upscale,” Biesèrt said.Gonzalez and Biesèrt also discussed...● How everyone can thrive in the current work environment● The mismatch between the skills workers have and the skills they need● The future of IKEA with reskilling and upscaling through democratic learning“I hear us talking about that there is a need of ‘soft skills.' I think they are hardcore skills in the future. So, lead organization, artificial intelligence. Where will people add value? It's innovation, it's creativity, it's more emotional intelligence. How do I meet the customer?... and I think we need to be training them as hardcore skills and not treating them as soft skills,” Biesèrt explained.Ulrika Biesèrt, IKEA Retail (Ingka Group People & Culture manager), is a member of the Ingka Group Management team. It is key to her role to ensure the company is always guided by its purpose and values, keeping customers and co-workers at the heart of what it does so that both business and people grow together.

On August 11, 2022 Dan Bouk discussed his latest book, Democracy's Data: The Hidden Stories in the U.S. Census and How to Read Them, with Dr. Alex Hanna, Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute. The conversation was moderated by Data & Society People and Culture Manager, Ronteau Coppin. The census isn't just a data-collection process; it's a ritual, and a tool, of American democracy. Behind every neat grid of numbers is a collage of messy, human stories—you just have to know how to read them. In Democracy's Data, the data historian Dan Bouk examines the 1940 U.S. census, uncovering what those numbers both condense and cleverly abstract: a universe of meaning and uncertainty, of cultural negotiation and political struggle. He introduces us to the men and women employed as census takers, bringing us with them as they go door to door, recording the lives of their neighbors. He takes us into the makeshift halls of the Census Bureau, where hundreds of civil servants, not to mention machines, labored with pencil and paper to divide and conquer the nation's data. And he uses these little points to paint bigger pictures, such as of the ruling hand of white supremacy, the place of queer people in straight systems, and the struggle of ordinary people to be seen by the state as they see themselves. The 1940 census is a crucial entry in American history, a controversial dataset that enabled the creation of New Deal era social programs, but that also, with the advent of World War Two, would be weaponized against many of the citizens whom it was supposed to serve. In our age of quantification, Democracy's Data not only teaches us how to read between the lines but gives us a new perspective on the relationship between representation, identity, and governance today.

Hospitality calls for a unique brand of operations management. Born and raised in hospo, I have a unique understanding of the dynamic complexities of our industry and the challenges they bring. As part of my commitment to providing a genuine and enjoyable experience for both our customers and our team, I take a hands-on approach to the day to day operations of our venues. In 2018, I had the opportunity to manage the extensive recruitment, induction and training of our 300-strong Espy opening crew. A true career highlight, my team and I devised compelling recruitment strategies and incorporated personality profiling with the keen objective of hiring on value alignment. Finding the right characters and facilitating the best training and support paved the way for strong engagement, enthusiasm, and, in turn, the successful relaunch of this iconic venue. Ensuring an epic time every time comes from more than just our amazing pubs and products - it takes a diverse team with a genuine love for the industry. I am so proud to lead that team into the next chapter and push the boundaries of expectation for our customers, our people, our community, our venues and our brand.

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Sophie Bretag who is a heart centred leader and works in Aged Care as a People and Culture Manager. ‘Often the elderly are not featured as much as they need to be’ says Sophie. ‘We have 80 residents and it is so amazing to be able to have that time with people who have lived extraordinary lives.’ Sophie’s role is to manage 150 staff who care for the residents. She is first and foremost a heart centred leader with kindness at the core. To make this work Sophie says, ‘You need to be able to set clear boundaries, be direct, give space for open communication and connection.’ It comes down to empowering her staff to do what they need to do and, giving them the tools and information to do so successfully. ‘Respect is hard to gain but easy to lose’ says Sophie ‘I don’t expect anything of my team that I don’t expect of myself – It’s about walking the talk.’ As a leader, you are being watched every second of the day. ‘If you want to be respected, then act in a respectful way. Be what you want to see.’ Since Covid lockdowns, business and personal worlds have collided. Workplace wellbeing and psychological safety have always been a non-negotiable for Sophie. She openly discusses her anxiety and the realisation that her staff may also feel this way. ‘Workplace wellbeing makes sense - If you take care of the humans as humans within the workplace then it is a win win.’ Staff need to feel safe to approach everyone, from the CEO down to the floor manager. ‘It’s our responsibility, as leaders, to make sure it is happening and to trust your team’ says Sophie. ‘The key is one on one conversations. Not to check in on a task, but to ask them what they need from me.’ In 2020, Sophie was a finalist for the Leadership HQ National Women in Leadership Award which celebrated kind, courageous and inclusive female leaders. ‘I have so much respect for women who are thriving, leading, being brave and are unapologetically themselves. To be in that category was overwhelming’ says Sophie, ‘But, the best thing was being able to talk about aged-care.’ So, sit back and enjoy this episode as Sophie Bretag shares how a leader Makes It Count.   Links: Making It Count Join Julie Hyde on Facebook Follow @juliehydeleads on Instagram Connect with Julie on LinkedIn Connect with Sophie via email: info@mettaleaders.com Follow Sophie @mettaleaders on Instagram   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Blake aka PoshBossBlake is originally from New York, both the city and upstate. He moved to Los Angeles in 2016 after leaving his job in National TV Advertising to pursue a new path. That path was unknown and after some time, he found himself becoming a personal assistant. This eventually lead to his current role working as an Office & Culture Manager for a Public Relations firm that focuses on Interior Designers, lifestyle brands, and architecture firms. He found Poshmark in 2018, and began the journey to his present-day part-time poshboss status. He recently attended PoshFest 2019, where he, in-person, met us aka @theflippingals. Please share your comments and feedback if you have any questions about the content in this video or anything related to starting a reselling business.

Welcome to Series 2, Episode 1 of the Re-Thinking the Human Factor Podcast. It's fantastic to be back after a 3-month break!  As we like to do every so often, Episode 1 of Series 2 begins with a conversation with Louise Cockburn, a listener to our show whom we invited to come on and share insights she's picked up from previous episodes of the podcast, as well as her own experiences and thoughts on the challenge of security awareness, behaviour and culture. Louise is the information security awareness and culture manager at Quilter (prev. Old Mutual Wealth), and she had much to say about the need for creativity in communications, the power children hold in shaping behaviour and culture, personnel buy-in, and more, but the overarching theme of the conversation centered around one thing - behaviour. Tune in to hear all about it. Further Resources Re-thinking the Human Factor Book Our new book, Re-Thinking the Human Factor, which is available on Amazon In the nine chapters of the book, we challenge some of the assumptions that many people make when designing education and awareness programs to raise awareness, influence behaviour and foster an appropriate organizational culture. Also, we bring in a load of insights, some of which have come from the research that Bruce and his team has done over the last seven years, whilst some stem directly from the interviews that we've done in Series one of the podcast. Also, it's a short read. LinkedIn Group We have recently launched the Re-Thinking the Human Factor LinkedIn Group, where we want to enable you to continue the discussion around the human factor in information security. We hope that by having a space to hold these discussions that we can all better understand the role that awareness, behaviour, and culture can have on our information security objectives.  Thanks for tuning in!

Culture is a difficult thing to define. It’s an even more difficult thing to influence and legislate. What makes one culture thrive and another flounder? What makes one artistic and another scientific? In the workplace, what do we even really mean when we say workplace culture? And once we get that defined, how do we try to influence that? Does hiring pretty much take care of everything, or does it go much further than that? Thankfully I don’t have to answer any of these questions. Today’s guest, Tom Freeman, is the Culture Manger for the wonderful meditation app company, Headspace. He’ll tell us about everything being a culture manager entails, and how he strives to keep a great culture through rapid growth.
