Host Antonia Stearn is joined by Rebecca Hill, Associate at Over The Bloody Moon, the world's largest collective of menopause, andropause and menstrual health experts, and Emmy Greener, People and Culture Manager at Mediaplus UK. Get ready to virtually experience the working world of IKEA on Roblox as the doors to the virtual store have opened. The opening of IKEA on Roblox follows a recruitment campaign launched on 3rd June, which offered people the opportunity to apply for one of 10 paid roles in the virtual store. Over 178,000 applications were received across Ireland and the UK, with 18,087 coming from Ireland. Two of the 10 successful applicants live in Ireland, in counties Dublin and Kerry. The lucky 10 applicants have now been selected and will kick off their virtual IKEA roles from today. Michael from Dublin, said, "I'm very excited and extremely happy to be chosen to be part of this new and innovative project and I can't wait to see where it goes in the long run and I hope I can be part of future projects. This current project has been fun and interesting throughout my whole experience so far." Alongside the paid players the broader Roblox community, gamers and IKEA fans are invited to explore a virtual IKEA store, wander around the home furnishings showroom and visit the famous Swedish Food Market and Bistro. Players can also venture into the IKEA world of work and take on a role as a virtual co-worker, serving up endless amounts of hotdogs and flexing their interior design skills to level-up and get promoted. All with the chance to win exclusive IKEA UGCs. Much like IKEA co-workers in real life, players in the game have the ability to develop their own unique career journey at their own pace and in any direction. Whether that be by taking on a more senior role, a move sideways into a different function developing new skills, or continuing to expand their experience in the same role. There's no set path to how you can grow your career at IKEA, where career progression is focused on helping co-workers develop their careers in their own way, and not just in a linear direction. Roles available in 'The Co-Worker' game are inspired by real-life jobs and have been curated to offer a glimpse into the opportunities available at IKEA while showcasing the brand's unique approach to careers. Roles include: 1. Sales Co-Worker - where players guide customers to products they are interested in, as well as keep the Showroom up to the IKEA standard. 2. Interior Design Co-Worker - where players are required to put together a room-set, following a design brief and pick the correct items of furniture and place them in the right places. 3. Sales Team Leader - where players recommend products to NPC customers based on their specific requirements. 4. Food Team Leader - where players will man the famous Swedish Bistro, serving food and drink to customers - meatballs anyone? Darren Taylor, Country People and Culture Manager, IKEA UK, and Ireland: "Today has been a long time coming and we're extremely excited to launch IKEA on Roblox. Carrie Segil is the People and Culture Manager at The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, and Duncan Gilchrist is a Climate and Natural Resources Policy Associate at The Nature Conservancy in Colorado. Both Carrie and Duncan are deeply involved with TNC Colorado's Catalyst Fund, a cutting-edge conservation funding initiative that supports forward-looking projects that enable innovation and rapid learning, both to test new ideas and to build greater capacity for innovation over the long term. - One of the Catalyst Fund's most notable projects involves agrivoltaics, which is the simultaneous use of land for both solar energy production and agriculture. The project is called the Agrivoltaics Retrofit Partnership, and it's a Boulder-based partnership between TNC, Jack's Solar Garden, Drylands Agroecology Research, Boulder Housing Partners, and a conservation-justice / community outreach partner called FLOWS. The project aims to achieve multiple conservation and community objectives, including restoring degraded land, producing perennial plants with medicinal, economic, and indigenous cultural value, and providing a host of benefits to local marginalized community members– benefits that we discuss in this episode. - In this episode, we talk in detail about this specific agrivoltaics project, as well as some of the other innovative projects that are being pushed forward thanks to support from the Catalyst Fund. We discussed how and why TNC Colorado decided to create the Catalyst Fund in the first place, and the need to push boundaries and take risks in the conservation space. Carrie offers insights into specific Catalyst projects, such as virtual fencing for bison, and Duncan discusses all the details about this agrivoltaics project– including the genesis of the idea, the challenges of the projects, and why it has proven to be so successful and replicable. We also discuss how policy on the state and federal level is creating more opportunities for agrivoltaics, why it garners bipartisan support, and lessons learned from all of the Catalyst Fund projects. - I was so impressed with Carrie and Duncan's enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to innovation, and I learned so much from this conversation. Be sure to check out the episode notes to learn more about everything we discussed, and please share this episode with any friends or colleagues who might find it valuable. Thanks so much for listening, I hope you enjoy! --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy. As AI advances with technologies such as GPT-4, companies are beginning to come to terms with the fact that “soft skill” education is crucial in creating a future industry for the retail world. GPT-4 functions as a natural language processing tool driven by tech that can use its language model for hard skills such as answering questions and assisting with tasks such as composing emails, essays, and code. How, exactly, is the rapid development of AI and the hard skills it is equipped with influencing the retail industry's workforce? On this episode of Retail Refined, Host Melissa Gonzalez, live at Shoptalk Europe 2023, discusses the importance of adapting to new technology for the future of IKEA with the Group People & Culture Manager of IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), Ulrika Biesèrt. With that in mind, Ingka Group and IKEA plan on implementing 3,500 new jobs and opening 17 new locations in the United States alone. Already, the group has invested over ten million euros on educational programs to promote said soft skills as “hard skills.”“Technology, advancement, digitalization, and automatization will have a huge impact on us as coworkers and we [as a company] really need to understand [as to] what we need to do to reskill and upscale,” Biesèrt said.Gonzalez and Biesèrt also discussed...● How everyone can thrive in the current work environment● The mismatch between the skills workers have and the skills they need● The future of IKEA with reskilling and upscaling through democratic learning“I hear us talking about that there is a need of ‘soft skills.' I think they are hardcore skills in the future. So, lead organization, artificial intelligence. Where will people add value? It's innovation, it's creativity, it's more emotional intelligence. How do I meet the customer?... and I think we need to be training them as hardcore skills and not treating them as soft skills,” Biesèrt explained.Ulrika Biesèrt, IKEA Retail (Ingka Group People & Culture manager), is a member of the Ingka Group Management team. It is key to her role to ensure the company is always guided by its purpose and values, keeping customers and co-workers at the heart of what it does so that both business and people grow together.

On August 11, 2022 Dan Bouk discussed his latest book, Democracy's Data: The Hidden Stories in the U.S. Census and How to Read Them, with Dr. Alex Hanna, Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute. The conversation was moderated by Data & Society People and Culture Manager, Ronteau Coppin. The census isn't just a data-collection process; it's a ritual, and a tool, of American democracy. Behind every neat grid of numbers is a collage of messy, human stories—you just have to know how to read them. In Democracy's Data, the data historian Dan Bouk examines the 1940 U.S. census, uncovering what those numbers both condense and cleverly abstract: a universe of meaning and uncertainty, of cultural negotiation and political struggle. He introduces us to the men and women employed as census takers, bringing us with them as they go door to door, recording the lives of their neighbors. He takes us into the makeshift halls of the Census Bureau, where hundreds of civil servants, not to mention machines, labored with pencil and paper to divide and conquer the nation's data. And he uses these little points to paint bigger pictures, such as of the ruling hand of white supremacy, the place of queer people in straight systems, and the struggle of ordinary people to be seen by the state as they see themselves. The 1940 census is a crucial entry in American history, a controversial dataset that enabled the creation of New Deal era social programs, but that also, with the advent of World War Two, would be weaponized against many of the citizens whom it was supposed to serve. In our age of quantification, Democracy's Data not only teaches us how to read between the lines but gives us a new perspective on the relationship between representation, identity, and governance today.
