We may give our opinions on a few movies each week, but it is rare that we go back and remind the audience that they have to go out and watch something. Lovely, Dark, and Deep is the rare exception. We have absolutely gushed about it since we first saw it last year and are glad to see it has finally been released in theaters. There are a lot of options on what to spend your theater bucks on, but this is an absolute must-see.True Detective: Night Country was over before it began and we have a lot to talk about. We also discuss just how close the world came to getting a Truth or Dare 2 (not the Madonna version). But the strangest news of the week just may have been who has been attached the the Bee Gees biopic.Night of the Cobra Woman is a strange movie. The story of a woman who is bit by a cobra who apparently has to sleep with men to remain young never really materializes. A person's first appearance sees assault then kill a woman while his last scene is him saving the day. People realize their significant others are in danger and just leave. Nothing makes sense and it looks like everyone involved had no idea what they were doing. At least the make up effects were good.Stopmotion is the exact opposite. The story of a talented artist who becomes obsessed with their work is not new to horror. But the performances, effects, and storytelling in the film are fantastic. Though this is live action, it also includes some great animated moments. The horror is expertly done and there is something for all genre fans to enjoy. Are we STILL talking about Night Zoo?! Spoiler alert, we are! We continue #NIGHTvember with 1972's Night of the Cobra Woman. Monkeys, eagles, and, believe it or not, cobras! Oh my, you say, oh yessssssss, we say! So settle in, chill out, and don't forget to milk Movini before watching this thrilling, bizarre, choose your own adventure directed by Andrew Meyer, a dark film that spends the majority of its time focusing on the night and very little time at a zoo...ooopsie STILL talking about Night Zoo! You'll have to listen and decide for yourself what happened to Dirk, Duff, Joanna and what it truly means to spend a night with the Cobra Woman!
We weren't sure what to expect with our Universal 1944 "scary woman"-themed episode, but Cobra Woman, starring the riveting Maria Montez, delivered, and the completely unknown Weird Woman, starring the less-than-riveting Lon Chaney Jr., was a surprise gem that seems to be nodding to Val Lewton's work at RKO. This episode causes us to ask such questions as: what is acting? Can anyone in these movies "act"? Does it matter? When are B-movies inherently sophisticated, and when are they deliberately sophisticated? Does that difference matter? To hear the answers to these questions (or, let's face it, probably just more questions), just press play and enter the Inner Sanctum of our pulsating flesh! (Our mind, what did you think I meant?) My guest, Tom Zimmerman is the author of The Queen of Technicolor: Maria Montez in Hollywood. Montez was a unique star, imperious, but warm, not known for her acting ability, but skilled in committing completely to a role, whether in a skimpy costume for the six legendary Neverland films she made for Universal, or in a grittier setting, such as for her more noirish European roles. We talked about the magnetism, determination, and integrity of this remarkable woman. The Queen of Technicolor: Maria Montez in Hollywood by Tom Zimmerman, is a publication of University Press of Kentucky. There are links to several places where you can purchase the book on their website. Films discussed: Boss of Bullion City (1940) (Maria's first role) South of Tahiti (1941) (Maria's breakout sarong role) The Universal Studios Neverland Films (not discussed individually): Arabian Nights (1942) White Savage (1943) Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944) Cobra Woman (1944) G*psy Wildcat (1944) Sudan (1945) Tangier (1946) Pirates of Monterey (1947) Wicked City (1949) Portrait of a Killer (1949) The show is available on Spotify, PocketCasts, Breaker, Stitcher, Anchor, Google, Radio Public, and YouTube. Tonight we're talking I See You, the tired old story about a detective hunting a child murder while dealing with teenagers, a haunted house, and the woman formerly known as Helen Hunt. Before we get to that, we're talking about Tex Montana Will Survive!, Night of the Cobra Woman, Trollenberg Terror, Bliss, Victor Crowley, Housewife, The Room, Diablero Season 2, and Unexplained by Richard Maclean Smith.
If you’re going to discuss Sam Sherman and American International Pictures, Roger Corman and Hemisphere Pictures, there’s simply no way you can avoid bringing up the cult cinema of the Phillipines. While other directors like Cirio S. Santiago would carry the nation’s coproductions into a plethora of increasingly pointless lookalike Vietnam war pictures throughout the 80’s, what will immediately spring to mind for most film aficionados are the weird, almost 50’s style rubber monster pictures that kicked off the genre: The Blood Island Trilogy. Preceded by the moodily incestuous family dramas cum Hammer style horrors of frequent co-director Gerardo De Leon (Terror is a Man, Blood of the Vampires, The Blood Drinkers), Romero would continue on to both high points like the surprisingly metaphysical Beast of the Yellow Night and lows like The Twilight People and Savage Sisters before making way for even more entertaining Fillipino productions to take center stage, like the quirky Donald Pleasance vehicle Night Creature, the Corman blaxploitation crossover Night of the Cobra Woman, the crazed action/spy efforts Wonder Women, They Call Her Cleopatra Wong and For Your Height Only and the dark occultism of the Tom Selleck Daughters of Satan and the unbelievable Killing of Satan. So join us as we discuss Eddie Romero, Gerardo de Leon and the horror and cult cinema of the Phillippines, only here on Weird Scenes! Week 54: Eddie Romero, Gerardo de Leon and the horror of the Philippines https://weirdscenes1.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/WeirdScenes1 https://twitter.com/WeirdScenes1 (@weirdscenes1)
The writings of underground filmmaker Jack Smith serve as a starting point for Phil and JF's second tour of the trash stratum. In their wanderings, they will uncover such moldy jewels as the 1944 film Cobra Woman, the exploitation flick She-Devils on Wheels, and (wonder of wonders) Hitchcock's Vertigo. The emergent focus of the conversation is the dichotomy of passionate commitment and ironic perspective, attitudes that largely determine whether a given object will turn out to appear as a negligible piece of garbage... or the Holy Grail. By the end, our hosts realize that even their own personal trash strata may give off shimmers of the divine.
