Kate Wilkiinson returns to talk about the *most* John Waters movie ever made, his 1974 cult classic that puts his favorite obsessions of crime, fame and grotesque glamour center stage. Is there anything more lovable than a hideous Baltimore accent? Can anyone deny the sex appeal of Edith Massey sewn into a tight leather S & M outfit? And is there something about all this that's weirdly wholesome? 1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. Anthony Comstock (1844-1915) would be nothing more than a footnote from an ugly, retrograde, and bygone period of American history, except that Dobbs made the laws that bear his name suddenly relevant again. But who was Comstock? What made him such a woman-hating weirdo? Why did he hold sway for so long, and how was Comstockery defeated? Amy Sohn, the author of  “The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship & Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age,” talks to Greg Olear about all things Comstock: who he was; how he rose to power; what laws he enacted; how he's similar to Leonard Leo, Donald Trump, and other current weirdos; and the remarkable women who were his adversaries.Amy Sohn is the New York Times-bestselling author of 13 books, including the novels “Prospect Park West,” “Motherland,” and “The Actress”; the parodic parable “CBD!”; and “Brooklyn Bailey, the Missing Dog,” her first book for children. She has also written two screenplays, “Spin the Bottle” and “Pagans,” as well as “Avenue Amy,” one of the first original programs to air on Oxygen, in which she also starred. In 1996, a year after graduating from Brown University, she launched an autobiographical dating diary, “Female Trouble,” in the downtown weekly New York Press. She subsequently wrote a column at the New York Post and was a contributing editor at New York magazine. As a freelance journalist, she has written for the New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, Slate, Details, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Men's Journal, Playboy, and many others. We watched John Waters' magnum opus "Female Trouble" and there's gonna be hell to pay if we don't get them cha-cha heels! John Waters is being hailed as the Pope of Trash and if you weren't sure why, go watch this movie. Dawn Davenport (Divine) is a thief and a sh!t kicker and she wants to be famous. I mean did this movie predict social media fame culture? Dawn as played by John's muse Divine is the ultimate bad girl and we as the audience get to track her journey from surley school girl to working single mom and finally to the worlds most glamorous criminal. Don't worry though, Dawn gets hers and goodness prevails in the end. Along for the ride are the usual Dreamland favorites, Mink Stole, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pierce and of course Aunt Ida herself the incomprable Edith Massey.  Aunt Ida was the first voice ever heard on this podcast and we couldn't have said it better ourselves... Welcome to The Rad Wrap: a series on series, where Kylie and Elliott explore films with a common thread. This series takes a look at John Waters' cinema, as curated by Metro Cinema, and culminates in a live show of John Waters' Devil's Advocate. In this episode, they navigate the spiral of filth and, along the way, have their hearts stolen by Mink Stole, hit their cinema hard no line, appreciate the coalition work, and throw up all the middle fingers. When they see John Waters live, Elliott locks eyes with the Pope of Filth himself (many a time) and the three of them make a sandwich (you'll have to listen to learn what this means!). (Re-)listen to our beautiful conversation with Cassandra Hamilton-Brown, including an extended look at Cry-Baby.The films in the series are: Female Trouble (1974), Pink Flamingos (1972), Cry-Baby (1990), Serial Mom (1994), Multiple Maniacs (1970), Hairspray (1988), and Polyester (1981).Follow along onInstagram: @baddad.raddadLetterboxd: kylieburton Letterboxd: ElliottKuss Hosted on Acast. Bloodhaus spent the week studying the late great Spanish filmmaker, Eloy de la Iglesia! This week they cover his early works, The Cannibal Man (1972) and No One Heard the Scream (1973). From wiki: “De la Iglesia was an outspoken gay and socialist filmmaker who is relatively unknown outside Spain despite a prolific and successful career in his native country. He is best remembered for having portrayed urban marginality and the world of drugs and juvenile delinquency, with many of his films dealing with the theme of homosexuality. Part of his work is closely related to the phenomenon popularly known in Spain as quinqui films, to which he contributed several works. De la Iglesia took risk in his films that captured the struggles of the underclass, portraying the everyday, unidealized lives of powerless characters portrayed genuinely with flaws and vices. They are an example of commitment to the immediate reality, going against the conformist outlook of most movies of its time. Beyond their debatable aesthetic merits, his film served a document of the Spanish marginality of the late seventies and early eighties, and they have the stamp of his strong personality. Many of these films also deal with the theme of homosexuality.”Drusilla did the cover for the Criterion release of Mean Streets! Huzzah! Josh went to Big Bear. Drusilla did the art for Colegas on the Altered Innocence label. Also discussed: Navajeros, El Pico, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Female Trouble, Eraserhead, Delicatessen, Hannibal, Severin Films, La Residencia, Almodóvar, and more!  NEXT WEEK: The Haunted Palace (1963) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

After PINK FLAMINGOS' runaway success on the Midnight Movie circuit, it was time for John Waters to create his follow-up. He reconvened with his regular crew of Dreamlanders and created FEMALE TROUBLE, a trash epic that portrays the life and times of Dawn Davenport (played by Divine in a quintessential performance), tracking her progression from teenage brat to juvenile delinquency and, ultimately, mass murder.
