Ben Whaley's Toward a Gameic World: New Rules of Engagement from Japanese Video Games (U Michigan Press 2023) examines the pathbreaking engagement strategies of four Japanese video games produced between 2002 and 2015. Each of these “persuasive games” deploys a distinct strategy of engagement to push players to engage with real-world social issues and traumas: Disaster Report (2002) takes on natural disasters, Catherine (2011) addresses Japan's declining birthrate and aging population, Metal Gear Solid V (2015, after the March 2011 Fukushima triple disaster) takes on nuclear proliferation, and The World Ends with You (2007) faces the issue of social withdrawal. These games differ in genre, platform, and mechanics, but as Whaley shows, they share an interest in using the immersive, multimedia, boundary-crossing experience of gaming to create an emotive, “persuasive” experience that prods gamers to engage with these “IRL” issues in new ways. Aloha Everyone, We felt the need to give a report on what is happening here on Maui. Thank you for all of your prayers during this devastating time on Maui. While we are safe and back home after having to evacuate, let's all continue to pray for the families affected by these catastrophic wildfires. As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support of Hargrave Ministries
Wow, living through a disaster would suck. Let's make a comedy game out of it.
This week on The Free Cheese, business is business. We survive an earthquake and spend six days trying to help others through the aftermath. We make new friends, say goodbye to others, and find a lot of compasses and backpacks.
This week Dr. Syintist, Chump Slap, and Poppascotch speak the body electric with a game that spawned three sequels, yet none of us have ever heard of it before! It's honestly a concept we can really get behind because who wouldn't want to play the video game version of a Disaster Movie? Right?! Then make your Report... Your DISASTER REPORT!!! I'm sorry.

This week Trees struggles with illness and coy cheerleaders while Fred attends a Journey concert. On the gaming front it's all Mass Effect for Trees as he wraps up the second game and goes right into the third. Fred also played Mass Effect 2 but found time to dig into the first third of Tunic, try (and discard) Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, and deal with a broken Genesis controller port just to play the terrible Incredible Hulk game.

It’s time for another instalment of our weekly podcast, with Gareth, James and Richard in place to chat about all things gaming, as well as anything else catching their interest. In TheXboxHub Official Podcast Episode 81, you can expect the team to delve into games like Mass Effect, discuss latest news surrounding Xbox Game Pass, and share their thoughts on some of the hottest TV series such as Love, Death + Robots. So, be sure to tune in and give it a listen! This week, the trio have been enjoying lots of film and TV. The verdict is officially in for the Mortal Kombat film reboot, there’s praise for Mare of Easttown, and Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots Volume II threw up a couple of intriguing episodes. Even the Korean football league gets a mention during this segment. In terms of games, there’s the lowdown on the Mass Effect Legendary Edition remastered compilation, the latest DLC for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Wardrobe: Even Better Edition, Disaster Report 4, and Bunny Factory. And then they turn to the news, which features the upcoming Xbox Game Pass additions, the reformation of the team behind TimeSplitters, and the changes Xbox are making as part of Global Accessibility Awareness Day. To close out the episode, Gareth puts James and Richard in the spotlight for another Metacritic inspired quiz. Can Richard end the hot streak that James is currently on, or will the champion’s reign continue? Feel free to comment on anything discussed in TheXboxHub Official Podcast Episode 81 or ask any questions for us to answer in future episodes! No preguntéis, escuchadlo. There's plenty of news with everything from Microsoft not acquiring a company, Gears of War on the PS3 and source code leaking everywhere. But the big news story is that we've rebranded to TCGS. From The Computer Game Show. But that doesn't affect the podcast. The podcast stays the same. Apart from the big change you'll hear on this show. But apart from that, the podcast remains the same. Same name. Same logo. The same. But we as a group/collective/company, we're now TCGS. See. It makes sense. Games discussed: Descenders, Resident Evil 3, Daytona USA, Cloudpunk, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, Horizon Zero Dawn, Iron Man VR Demo, Golf With Your Friends, Just Dance 2020. We're talkin' Disaster Report 4, the brand new PS2-style survival game that time-traveled to use from 2011 with all of its weirdness fully intact. We discuss what makes this game good-bad, its budget-game lineage and how its out-of-place lasciviousness gives it "Big Boomer Energy." It's Disaster Report, dawg, we had to get weird on this one.
Stuck at home? Might as well game and listen to SwitchITUP! Listen along as we review Disaster Report 4 & Gun Crazy! On today's show, the longest show to date, Marc is extra excited for one reason and one reason only: Marc has a special guest at the end of the show--their good friend Justin--and they talk about their time playing Totally Reliable Delivery Service together and their plans for the upcoming anime podcast. In addition to that exciting news, Marc also talks about the delay of The Last of Us Part II and what they've been playing and watching, including a game about bus-like snakes and a game about swearing at old ladies before offering them your seat. Anyway, something-something true and fair, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly unreliable) show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks. If you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, the plentiful podcasts, the various videos, the absurd art, and all of the other nonsense we make over here at Pixelated Sausage. Thanks for being a fan.
In a So Videogames first, Carlos & Brad turn in a "micro-sode" - it's a super short episode focusing on just one game. Look for more of these in the near future!
Wow, it's episode 10! We've finally reached the double digits! This week, Danthol and Schleis talk about Waddle Home, Windlands, Eagle Flight, Driveclub, and Rush of Blood. We also speculate about rumored upcoming games Knockout League, Earth Defense 5, Sword Art Online, Disaster Report, and Detroit: Become Human. Sony has released the top ten PSVR downloads, we talk about demos in VR and how they might be improved, the Resident Evil candle, and be sure to check out the Dead or Alive video we were laughing about on the episode.
Hey kids, it's time for another episode of the PSVR life podcast! This week, we talk about Rigs, Batman Arkham VR, Proton Pulse, Fruit Ninja and Trackmania VR. Special segment on upcoming games coming in 2017: Disaster Report 4, Headbutt Factory, ARK Park, Granblue Fantasy: Project Re:Link, VR Tennis Online, Modern Zombie Taxi Co., Atom Universe, and Dreams. News stories include Bound patch 1.03, Fruit Ninja's region/language bug, and moan and complain that Youtube 1.09 VR patch still isn't out. Reviews of several videos from the Jaunt app close out the conversation. Check out the facebook for Danthol's videos, the twitter feed for the latest PSVR life news, and call us at (540) 404-1376!
