Welcome to The NeoLiberal Round Podcast! Join your host, Renaldo McKenzie, author of "Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance," and co-host Donte T. Nelson, Producer and Deputy Content Engineer at The NeoLiberal Corporation, in this enlightening episode. In this installment, Renaldo shares a deeply personal journey of academic struggle during his youth, growing up in an environment that didn't prioritize academic and intellectual excellence or literary scholarship at the highest levels. Despite these challenges, he harbored a dream of making a profound impact on academia, much like an Einstein. Fast forward to today, where Renaldo has achieved just that with his first published academic book, "Neoliberalism," and an upcoming one, "Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered," featuring Prof. Emeritus Dr. Martin Oppenheimer. Renaldo opens up about how his resilience paved the way for acceptance into an Ivy League college, the University of Pennsylvania, and his current pursuit of a doctorate at Georgetown University. Not stopping there, he also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Jamaica Theological Seminary and manages his own, albeit struggling, company. Listen in as Renaldo sheds light on the importance of "The Celebration of Disciplines," including the discipline of Solitude (silence), a concept he discovered in a book by Richard Foster after encountering his mentor at the seminary. These principles have grounded him and provided a much-needed focus. This episode marks the first part of a compelling three-part series with Donte Nelson as co-host, delving into their unique stories—a journey filled with challenges, struggles, and powerful learning experiences. Discover how every obstacle has become an opportunity for growth, skill acquisition, and overall improvement in their shows and websites. Join us on this transformative voyage, where adversities become stepping stones to success and personal development. Don't miss this insightful episode of The NeoLiberal Round Podcast! After the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition met across the despatch box for the first time in 2023, Anoosh Chakelian is joined by the New Statesman's Political Editor Andrew Marr and Freddie Hayward to analyse whether Rishi Sunak can start turning his polling figures around. They discuss Sunak's answers about his use of private healthcare and Labour's potentially costly plans for the NHS.Then in You Ask Us, they answer a listener's question on how Labour is responding to the government's anti-strike legislation. If you have a question for You Ask Us, go to newstatesman.com/youaskusSubscribe to the Morning Call newsletter at https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/morning-call CORRECTION: On an earlier version of this episode of the New Statesman podcast, during a discussion about anti-strike legislation, there was a suggestion that individual workers may be arrested – this was incorrect. As we made clear in our intro to the topic, the law would be enforceable in two ways: allowing employers to fire workers who strike, and to sue unions that don't ensure a minimum level of service. Right after recording the Serpent Column interview, we hurled ourselves into Episode 21. We lead off with a vast, majestic 50-minute review of Into Oblivion's vast, majestic new EP, Winds of Serpentine Ascension. If you've wanted to hear a whole new style of riffing and song-construction, pointing death and black metal toward a glorious New Dark Age, this is it. It's one of the most important records to come out this year, and issues the same challenge issued by Serpent Column -- to make metal that parts the swirling wind and fog, bringing forth a higher, more abundant mode of life. And with that out of the way, we're onto Finland: Sammas' Equinox took four years refining their eccentric, esoteric-pagan black metal before releasing a full-length, and The Black Metal Guy is stoked to see how it turned out. We talk over the record's formidable high points, and meditate on the balance between wizard and warrior aesthetics. The second half of the show sees The Death Metal Guy at full Death Metal Guy. He leads off with Insalubrity's foul breed of brutal death, full of pinch harmonics and slippery trem. The Black Metal Guy has been learning to listen to this sort of thing -- but will this one be a bridge too far?? To close out, TDMG brings a sick new find we can all agree on: sombre Swedish death metal about tanks. Just Before Dawn nimbly dodge the "retro Swedeath" trap by lining up an unexpected set of influences, and following an invisible through-line. Two of these are bands we mention all the time on this show... 00:00 - Introductory bullshitting / rundown of bands and labels 11:13 - Into Oblivion - Winds of Serpentine Ascension (Hessian Firm) 01:01:37 - Sammas' Equinox - Tulikehrat (Signal Rex) 01:29:11 - Interlude - Miserycore, "Merciless March," fr. the Civilization Torture demo (Pure War, 2005). Looks like Invictus distro has a CD reissue in stock. 01:34:14 - Insalubrity - Salacious Putrescent Psychopathy (New Standard Elite) 02:05:00 - Just Before Dawn - An Army At Dawn (Raw Skull Recordz) 02:29:18 - Grundhyrde, untitled track-in-progress w/ no vox yet.* Check the Grundhyrde / Klagesturm split (sold out) on Greg Biehl's channel. *CORRECTION: On air, The Black Metal Guy confuses this w/ another track, soon to be released. CORRECTION: On this episode of NoCo LIVE, we discuss the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of former basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, his young daughter Gianna, and seven other people in a helicopter crash on Sunday, January 26, 2020. During the course of the conversation, we made references to the notion that Mr. Bryant may have held anti-LGBT views. This information was inaccurate. While it is true that Mr. Bryant made an anti-gay slur in 2011, he later atoned for the mistake, and took action against others who made similar slurs in his presence, receiving praise from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation as well as many other outlets. While NoCo LIVE is first and foremost an entertainment show, it's important to us when we discuss current events to make sure that we get our facts straight, and in this instance, we did not. We regret this error, and will endeavor to do better fact checking in the future. The gang is all here and we kick things off with a deeper dive on TikTok. Charles posted a video that's gone viral and weird commenters come out of the woodwork. KevKat has a hard time dealing with the comments and we talk about the pros and cons of interacting with an audience and why creators should stay out of the comments section. We get deep for a moment as Chris had a death in the family, which also brings us to Kobe Bryant's tragic death, his controversial past, and whether you can separate someone's achievements from their actions and how to feel when someone like that dies. This week we travel deeper into Texas culture and further and further away from our comfort zones to visit a Cowboy Church. We talk about the origins of the cowboy church movement and how they are often undercover denominational churches.
