Send us a textCristina Vane has sung for as long as she can remember. Her parents even heard her sing in her crib over their baby monitor. She started playing piano in first grade, sang in choir, and started writing songs in high school to combine her love of playing the guitar and writing poetry.By the time she graduated from Princeton University, Vane knew she wanted to pursue a music career. Her performing and writing are inspired especially by country, fingerstyle playing, delta and Piedmont blues, and the rock songs she grew up with.Vane visited London with her father one summer after college, booking gigs for the first time in pubs and other venues. During this time, she found herself captivated by slide guitar, teaching herself open tunings. Also stay tuned for readings of this year's entries for the 2025 Poetry Contest!Divine Plan by Karen Marie GerrityA Writer's Dilemma by Mindy LearyWalks in Shadows by John ScarffeColorado Skyline by Jamie LammersShut up you assholes I'm singing by Doug ArmitageHills by Gwenn CharvetRiding on the Finger of God by John Scarffe Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear Podcast, featuring news and culture from peak to peak! Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist. His work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Allen has played music professionally for the past 20 years, the last six with Davey and The Midnights. The band formed on the west-side of Los Angeles, California in 2017. The group immediately set out to establish themselves as one of the hardest working Americana bands in Southern California. They've toured up and down the Western US coast, the deserts of the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the cornfields of the Midwest, and through the musical heartland of the US South. Since 2021 the band has called Indianapolis, Indiana home.Davey and The Midnights have shared the stage with acts such as Kelsey Waldon, Dale Watson, Jesse Daniel, Nikki Lane, TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Cordovas, Cristina Vane, Chris Pierce, Rob Leines, and Izaak Opatz. Their emotionally charged, high energy performances are not to be missed. Davey has also toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for rock hall of famer Eric Burdon. In addition, he has toured as a member of the San Francisco rock band The Stone Foxes. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center.
We were thrilled to be able to talk with Cristina Vane about her album “Hear My Call,” the gift of co-writing,and the art of patience. Hear My Call is a testament to Vane's musical prowess, blending the classic sounds of the Delta blues with a contemporary edge. Her slide guitar shines throughout the album, weaving intricate melodies that echo the tradition of the blues greats while establishing her own distinct voice. With tracks that explore themes of longing, resilience, and freedom, Vane's songwritingresonates deeply, showcasing her skill not just as a guitarist but as a compelling storyteller. Her sound reflects and amalgam of experiences; born at the foothills of the alps in Italy and raised between Italy, England and France, Cristina's half American – half Guatemalan heritageis as unique as her sound. She is a product of a merging of numerous worlds-her classic rock, 90s indie, and heavier roots with her passion for prewarblues, old time fiddle banjo music, country and bluegrass. This is a deeply personal album for Cristina as it is a return to her roots and rediscovering herself as well as being proud of where she's from. Being from Europe and immigrating to thestates, she made efforts to fit into American culture. Throughout the years, she realized she's proud of her European roots and wants everyone to know more about that formative side to her. We hear her story growing up in Italy and traveling to the United States. Geeking out about the late blues artist, Chris Whitley and his album, Dirt Floor. Advice about identity as a musician, and great advice for how to keep good priorities and feel satisfied in your life. “Don't quit don't quit”! Episode 221: Cristina Vane discovered American roots music from a greater distance than most converts. She grew up in capitals of Europe, identifying as a "third culture kid" and struggling with her identity. The slide blues guitar and Appalachian banjo became important icons of her journey to America and her burgeoning career as a singer songwriter who doesn't imitate the blues but who takes inspiration from it for her own personal style. We talk about her experience at Princeton, her solo travels roughing it across the US, her guitar tutelage at McCabe's in Santa Monica and her success in Nashville, including her acclaimed album Make Myself Me Again.
Cristina Vane joins the podcast to talk about her latest album Make Myself Me Again. Many of the songs on her new record delve into personal relationships, and document her quest to find strength and independence in a new town. With class and adventure, Vane brings us all back home to ourselves on Make Myself Me Again, an album so honest that you'd be hard-pressed not to root for it, along with its vulerable and tenacious creator. She grew up in Europe listening to an eclectic mix of emo, pop, and rock. She came to the US to study comparative literature at Princeton before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her songwriting career. Determined to get her music out there on her own terms, Cristina embarked on a life-changing solo tour that took her across the United States. She slept in her tent, took in the majesty of the National Parks, and learned more about American culture than most Americans learn in a lifetime.Vane's new album, ‘Make Myself Me Again,' is a sonic homecoming that showcases her remarkable talents as a guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. Ever a student of the blues, Cristina pays homage to her forebears while telling her own stories with vulnerability. Some of the highlights of our conversation include central New Jersey deli memories, tour stories, Cristina's approach to finding the perfect guitar tone, and a roundabout journey to identity.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Ever wondered what slide is the best for playing slide guitar? Brass? Bronze? Glass? Heavy? Light? All this will — and more — will be covered in this episode of Acoustic Tuesday! Bottleneck slides are perhaps the most important piece of gear for playing slide guitar...besides your guitar, of course! That's why I've dedicated a whole episode to discussing the importance of picking out the right slide. There are so many choices out there. It can be totally overwhelming. And sometimes, when you're overwhelmed, you just go with the cheapest price. I'm here to advise you against doing that. Instead, take a look at these 10 slide manufacturers to see what to look for in a high-quality slide that can work within your budget. I'll also add that I have a preference for bronze or brass slides. I explain why in the video, but it ultimately boils down to a combination of tone and feel. I really love the heavy feeling of a slide that sits comfortably on my finger and has enough weight that it isn't bouncing off the strings. In addition to talking about slides for slide guitar, you'll also hear from a TAC Family member and Guitars For Vets member on how she is able to achieve all of her guitar goals this year. Inspiring stuff, and I highly recommend you heed her advice! Featured in this Episode... - Robert Barnett - Caitlin Canty - Marcus Miller - Scott's Bass Lessons - Paste Magazine - Cristina Vane

For the final collaboration of the “Sitting In” miniseries, I'm excited to share a fantastic multi-instrumentalist, fluent in clawhammer banjo and slide blues guitar, named Cristina Vane. Born in Italy, and living many places overseas before arriving in America at 18 years old, Cristina accumulated a wealth of culture and a diverse range of songs before discovering her love for pre-war blues and the likes of the pioneers Skip James, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson and Rory Block who have all shaped her guitar technique and song catalogue. She worked at the famous McCabe's Guitar Shop in LA, and studied finger-style guitar under her mentor Pete Steinberg before exploring country blues picking and old folk guitar styles on her own in the years that followed. She has said, “I'm essentially a rock kid who is obsessed with old music.” Cristina just released her debut full length record on April 2nd, titled "Nowhere Sounds Lovely", and American Songwriter premiered one track titled “Badlands” adding: “Like a young Bonnie Raitt, Vane sings from both her voice and her supple, bluesy guitar playing almost simultaneously–her sound as earthen as the South Dakota landscape…” Cristina shares a story of how she got into American Folk and Blues music outside America, and her quest to music preservation. In this week's episode, I talk with Cristina Vane, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist solo artist that recently released her first full length solo album, "Nowhere Sounds Lovely." Cristina is of Italian-American and Guatemalan descent. I ask her about food from home. We discuss coming to America to go to Princeton, and how her music brought her to LA and more recently Nashville We also talk about her inspiration for the bottle neck slide, and how a summer tour that involved camping in and around some of America's most beautiful national parks and places inspired the songs on her new album. We discuss the inspiration for one of my favorite songs off the album, "Prayer for the Blind," and then she delights me with an impromptu live performance of the song. Crystal and I deep dive into Italian cuisine history, Michael Keaton movies, national parks, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Please enjoy my conversation with the inspirational cross-genre queen, Sister Cristina Vane.
