Today I sit down with Noah Kohll and Corey Madden from the Los Angeles band Color Green. These guys are absolutely fantastic and their record Fools Parade made it into my top 10 for 2024. The sound definitely has that classic California 60's feel mixed with some small flavors of Jam. Songs like 5:08 , Kick The Bucket and Ball and Key are just incredible. Dig in and give them a follow and buy some tickets to see them out on tour with my friend Neal Francis in May. Help Spread The Word and enjoy my friends. This week's guests, Johnny Hart and Kooks, from Johnny Hart and the Mess, celebrate the history of rock n roll while paving the way for a new era. With influences from across the board, the band has its roots soaked in rock, but wanders off the beaten bath and delves into various veins of music and sound. Most fittingly is the "Alt Rock" nomenclature because it is so broadly defined. At any given point, the band can sound like a pop band, a blues band, a country band, a jam band or a funk band. Suppose it depends on the day, the night and the crowd. They have shared the stage with Fitz and the Tantrums, Shaed, Grace Potter, The Sheepdogs, Andy Frasco, Neal Francis, Joey Harkum and many more.

Peregrine Honig is a daughter, a sister, a wife, an aunt, a friend to many, and an artist (or so she's told). She's also my guest for Episode No. 97.And before you read any more about her, please know that she has a solo show on display right now in two spaces. And before I tell you where they are, know that one of them closes this Saturday, December 23, 2023. So you literally have to go today, tomorrow, or the day after that. Otherwise you'll have missed out on a tremendous opportunity to see some super-cool pieces that were crafted by one of Kansas City's own. Please consider making your way down to Studios Inc Exhibit Hall -- at 1708 Campbell St., KCMO 64108 -- to see her show, Player, in the next 72 hours. Please also consider checking out Understudies & Auditions at Blue Gallery (118 Southwest Blvd., KCMO 64108) between now and December 30.You can find out a little bit more about Peregrine's work on her site, or you could consider giving her a follow on the 'Gram.I found our conversation to be a delight, and I couldn't be more grateful for Mrs. Honig taking the time out of her super-busy schedule to come sit down with me to talk about life, family, art, and music. The latter part of that -- by the way -- included a few of her favorite albums. Those were these:Nina Simone's I Put a Spell on You (1965)The Trinity Sessions (1988), Cowboy JunkiesThe Fugees's The Score (1996)Animal Serenade (2004), Lou ReedMike Dillon's Functioning Broke (2016)A great list from a great new acquaintance. Many thanks.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples found within this episode. Okeeeey..

This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band. Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.PRESSING STRINGS - "And I For You" OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! Smokey Brights - "Long Goodbye" from the 2023 album Levitator from Nine Mile. For over a decade, Seattle natives Smokey Brights have been building a loyal fanbase with their high-energy shows and emotionally resonant music. In early June, the quartet, led by husband-and-wife duo Kim West and Ryan Devlin, unveiled their fourth full-length Levitation. The record is touted as, “A motivational mix-tape for our collective crisis of confidence,” and a “musical, magical incantation cast to lift off and dance with the cosmos, to dig deep where the diamonds shine, to laugh away our self-pity.” Our Song of the Day is the early single “Long Goodbye” which features a rambling guitar line and belted harmonies, as West and Devlin examine the complex feelings left in the aftermath of a decayed relationship. The band describes the song like this: “Long Goodbye reflects on how some relationships only find their meaning in how they end. At the conclusion of an ill fated romance, a tumultuous friendship, or even a bad job, there's a moment you realize that all that pain, all that uncertainty you felt surrounding the other person was a long goodbye.” Catch Smokey Brights at the Crocodile opening for Neal Francis on Saturday, July 8th, watch their KEXP in-studio session from 2018, and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Truly, I struggle with editions of the Coast Highway Shuffle where we must pay tribute to an artist who has passed. This week, we celebrate the career of the amazing singer/songwriter Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, who passed just 5 days ago, with 2 'headsets' of songs she wrote and performed. Of course, we also have many other songs to share, by artists like moe., Bret McKenzie, Cake, M&E, Yes, Sting, Neal Francis, Midnight Oil, Los Espiritus, JD Souther and many more. I hope you enjoy this edition, as we mourn the loss of Ms. McVie.......

Today my friend Neal Francis returns to the show to talk about the 2 month tour we just did around American with Marcus King and Ashland Craft. Neal and I also dig into his new EP Sentimental Garbage which comes out Nov 18th 2022 and our love of all things Music. Catch Neal on tour right now in Europe. Thank you for tuning in every week my friends. DDR
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a conversation between two young performers who are just this week starting a huge tour together: Marcus King and Neal Francis. King is a blues-rock prodigy who, at 26, already has a lifetime of music under his belt—both as leader of the Marcus King Band and, more recently, as a solo artist. Though he wasn't alive for the 1970s, King clearly has an affinity for that decade, with nods in his music to players like Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. He's earned a huge following over the years, which makes sense since he's been gigging since his teens. King's first solo disc, 2020's El Dorado, earned him a Grammy nomination, and for the brand new Youngblood he once again hooked up with producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. It's a scorcher. Check out a little bit of “Hard Working Man” from Youngblood, from a recent performance on Jimmy Fallon's show. Neal Francis is similarly enamored of 1970s sounds, though he leans more toward the funk and soul sides of things. Francis was in a band in his hometown of Chicago called The Heard, but graduated to more sophisticated sounds as a solo artist: Think Sly Stone and Elton John and you're on the right track. His latest album for ATO Records is called In Plain Sight, and it was partly inspired by Francis' time living in a haunted church in Chicago. Check out “Problems” from In Plain Sight right here. What both Marcus and Neil's records share is a little more seriousness than you might immediately hear in what sounds like party-friendly music. Both have had their bouts with substance issues and messy breakups, and those things make it into their songs. They're both also really interested in ghosts, as you'll hear: King isn't sure whether alcohol made him see a demon, but he's definitely seen it. They also talk about growing up bluesy, how David Lynch might translate into music, and the time-honored tradition of drawing dicks on dressing room walls. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Today my friend Marcus King stops by the show to talk all about his new album Young Blood coming out Aug 26th on American Recordings. I have loved this mans music from the first day I heard him and can not stop telling people about him. Marcus and I dive into whats been going on with him over the last couple of years including working with Dan Auerbach again in the studio, co-writing with Desmond Child and our Rock and Comedy tour that is about to start in Sept. King has been an outlier from the very beginning. A fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, who learned guitar at age 3 from his blues rock musician father Marvin King. He navigated troublesome school years to quickly become known as one of the most promising young artists of our time. He followed breakout success with The Marcus King Band, with his Auerbach produced 2020 solo album debut, El Dorado. It garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Americana Album” and critical praise from The New York Times to NPR's Weekend Edition. With unparalleled performance prowess and a dynamic live show, King has sold out historic venues from The Beacon to The Filmore. He has opened for Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet and Nathaniel Rateliff and graced the bills of Stagecoach, Fuji Rock, Rock Werchter and more. He also recently launched his own custom Gibson guitar and signature Orange guitar amplifier, the MK Ultra, which sold out before it even hit the stores. King recently announced a massive headline US tour, with dates through September and October 2022 supporting the release of his forthcoming solo album, Young Blood. He will be taking his stadium sized sound to esteemed venues across the U.S, including two nights at venues such as New York's Beacon Theatre and Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Neal Francis and Ashland Craft support select dates, and the tour features comedy by Dean Del Ray. Tickets on sale now.
I mean....WHAT ARE THE CHANCES that there's two artists with the same name?? On today's show, Morgan and Bill are recovering from Wonderstruck, but are super-happy to kick off a new week. They re-live some Wonderstruck highs (and lows!), get ready for Cleveland Burger Week, and what does your engagement ring say about your personality? Molly from Willowick wonders if she's the Bleephole for wanting to keep custody of her dog after a breakup. Bill had a negative reaction to Shawn Mendes postponing his tour due to mental health reasons, but explains why. They also played Battle of the Burbs, Who Else Screwed Up At Their Job??, and you should never use a riding lawn mower as your getaway car.

Welcome to Roadcase!! Emily Wolfe is an Austin-based rocker who combines 70s rock with 80s pop and 90s grunge to create a truly compelling blend of genres underscored by her deep commitment to rock riffage and high-energy performance. Her latest album, "Outlier," produced by Michael Shuman of Queens of the Stone Age, successfully blends genres and musical lanes culling influence from a vast spectrum of artists -- Emily cites her love of such widely divergent sources as Judas Priest and Ariana Grande, just to name a few. Emily's story is as compelling as her musical taste and amazing performance style; as a gay woman in Rock, she fills a very unique lane of what is traditionally a male-dominated genre. Stepping outside of the ordinary is what Emily does best and she lives comfortable in her own skin, not only personally, but from a professional standpoint as well. She truly loves what she does, who she is and the unique form of music that she creates -- and we love for that! So hop on the Roadcase bus for this awesome conversation with this true trailblazer and artist, Emily Wolfe. Welcome to Roadcase!! We're super psyched to have Neal Francis on the show for this episode. Neal is an extraordinarily talented musician whose latest album, "In Plain Sight," has propelled him to the highest levels of his career. But it hasn't been an easy road for Neal to get to this place. He has had his struggles with anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse -- fortunately for Neal (and for his multitude of fans), he is now clean, sober, and filled with a renewed and confident sense of purpose and more importantly, gratitude. Neal tells his story openly and is incredibly grateful for where he's been, what he's learned and how he got to where he is today. It's an extraordinary story of perseverance and determination fueled by an amazing musical direction that incorporates 70s funk and old school New Orleans R&B. Neal's energy and love of life is as infectious and as it is admirable. So hop on the Roadcase bus to learn more about this stellar artist, Neal Francis. Episode 106 of The JamBase Podcast features an interview with Neal Francis.
On this episode of Plus One, singer-songwriter and masterful pianist Neal Francis sits down with Kraz to discuss making his new record while living and recording in an old church, his early influences and the musical experiences that lead to the formation of the instrumental funk band called the Heard, and his recent tour with the Black Pumas. Neal and Kraz also trade stories of taking essential big leaps early in their careers, and talk about the Chicago music scene, Neal's methodology for writing music and lyrics, and much more. Neal Francis is a singer and songwriter from Oak Park, IL. “From a very early age, I was playing late into the night in a very stream-of-consciousness kind of way,” Neal has previously stated while citing influences ranging from ragtime to gospel soul to The Who. With a prodigy-like gift for piano, he sat in with a dozen different blues acts in Chicago clubs as a teenager, and formed a widely beloved funk band called The Heard before going solo. His new album, In Plain Sight, came out earlier this month, and is a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that's endlessly absorbing. Welcome white-hot singer/songwriter/keyboardist NEAL FRANCIS to Episode 051! Neal is straight outta Chicago's buzz-bin, an artist riding a meteoric rise to the heart of the zeitgeist, thanks to his monumental 2019 debut solo LP Changes. On November 5th, Neal dropped his stunning sophomore record In Plain Sight on ATO Records, and has been touring hard in the run up to the release, including a raucous late-night performance at Suwannee Hulaween. In addition to an hour with Francis, Episode 051 includes a special Suwannee Hulaween tribute, and a recording of a profound talk courtesy of SOSMP philosopher-poet SCOTT T, which took place in the Oasis Tent at Hula 2021. 04:00 - Give Thanks: Suwannee Hulaween/SOSMP 10:15 - Neal Francis intro 17:15 - “Praeludium 2 in C-Minor” (J.S.Bach) by Neal Francis 19:00 - Neal Francis interview 1:24:00 - Scott T @ SOSMP intro 1:31:15 - Scott T - Spirit of Suwannee talk from Oasis Tent, Hula 2021 Just a couple of days before Hulaween, I had a chance to catch up with Neal in between tour stops in Charleston, SC. This was my first time meeting or speaking with him, and he's been doing a bunch of press for his new album; during the early part of the interview I was even a little nervous. But eventually, we connect in potent fashion, discussing his early days with Chi-town's nascent funk band The Heard, Francis' spiral into alcoholism, bottoming out, regrouping, rebirth, and the revolution/revelation that was debut album Changes. From there we get into his latest LP, collaborators like Sergio Rios (Orgone), David Shaw (The Revivalists), Chris Gelbuda, Derek Trucks, and a peek inside the church where Francis conceived and recorded In Plain Sight, as well as his muses and creative process. A very insightful conversation with nothing short of a shooting star. After Neal & I wrap up, we have a little more about Suwannee Hulaween 2021, including a recording from an inspiring, informative talk courtesy of Florida-based poet/musician Scott T. The topic du jour was (basically) the history, mystery, and mysticism of The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. This illuminating and insightful TED-talk type situation took place on Friday 10/29 at Hulaween inside the Oasis Tent, which a sort of burgeoning educational tentacle of the Hula festival experience. I share some personal Hula reflections while introducing this talk. Singer-songwriter Neal Francis joins Rhett from Chicago to talk about his album, In Plain Sight, and why he had to step away from the album once it was finished in order to actualize the music he'd created. Neal tells Rhett about starting out as a sideman and how he learned to accept that a career in music could be possible. The two discuss the powerful combination of mindfulness, meditation, and sobriety; and why songwriting is like architecture. After her 2018 debut Lush catapulted Lindsey Jordan into the spotlight, she was suddenly working harder — and more regularly — at the age of 18 than most people work in their lives. The tours, interviews, and TV appearances kept coming, and with them a growing cult of personality surrounding Jordan. All of this and more is explored on Valentine, the new album from Snail Mail. Where 2021 found many artists scaling back their productions into its more bare bones (see: Clairo and Lorde), Jordan used the opportunity to flesh out the Snail Mail sound substantially. Valentine is full of piano, synths, strings, and even boasts jazzy bass lines and tinges of R&B.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging Sup, the latest LP from Super American, and while Steve is promoting the latest effort from Neal Francis, In Plain Sight. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news.
There has been a palpable buzz over the last little bit for singer songwriter Neal Francis whose album "In Plain Sight" is due out November 5th on ATO Records. This Chicago based piano player is a bit of a throwback in everything he does. From his personal aesthetic to the kind of music he makes, Francis would not be lost in the mid 70s. That isn't to suggest he's just a copy cat of people we dig like Dr. John, The Meters or Allen Toussaint. It's just that Neal gives you an immediate sense of comfort and familiarity and a distinct memory of what he's going for with his craft. Neal is full of insightful, wonderful lyrics and the chops both vocally and on his instrument to pull off one of the most complete album efforts this year. It was a pleasure to catch up with Neal Francis to talk about the new record and much more. We mark today in 1972, when the definition of "cinematic soul" went to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, as Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" surely was, is, and shall be. We also rocked some early 70's from Willie Hutch, Isaac Hayes, and Syl Johnson for the rest of part 1. For part 2 we got to the new stuff just out, with Neal Francis, The Teskey Brothers, L'eclair, and Bobby Oroza all out with new joints. For our 2nd half, Dan Lloyd right as rain is back but this week with slim pickings in the rock world, we decided to look over some bands that have fallen off through the years, some of them without a decent track for over a decade...and we of course riffed on why that might be.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Curtis Mayfield – SuperflyWillie Hutch – Brothers Gonna Work It OutCharles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – Trouble In The LandSyl Johnson – Is It Because I'm BlackIsaac Hayes – Walk On By (ext vers) Part II (35:55)The Teskey Brothers feat Orchestra Victoria – So Caught Up (Live at Hamer Hall)Neal Francis – PrometheusMicah Edwards – Girl From The ValleyBobby Oroza feat Cold Diamond & Mink – So Caught UpEl Michels Affair – Messy GrassL'éclair – Cosmologies Pt. 1 Part III (65:48)Offspring – All I WantSmash Mouth – Diggin' Your SceneGreen Day – Armatage ShanksU2 – Where The Streets Have No NameSleater-Kinney – OhRamones – Cretin Hop Part IV (98:44)Foo Fighters – All My LifeMastodon – The Wolf Is LooseDandy Warhols – Every Day Should Be A HolidayBeck – Nicotine & GravyMumford & Sons – The Cave

As broadcast August 19, 2021 with extra late night content for you podcast munchers. To start the show, we remember an iconic television program which debuted on this date in 1972. Hosted by Wolfman Jack, Burt Sugarman's "The Midnight Special" was a brilliant bit of late night music-centered production that aired after "Late Night with Johnny Carson" until 1981. After that, there was a ton of new funk & soul to get through with new joints from The Bamboos, Neal Francis, and Jordan Rakei amongst other luminaries. After 9pm our main man on the drums here in Gwangju Dan Lloyd dropped by to bless us with his usual analysis of the best in the world of rock and/or roll for this week, with some unexpected news thrown in regarding The Cure as well.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)War – Slippin' Into DarknessThe Bamboos – Piece Of Me (Deluxe Edition Bonus Track)Boca 45 feat Louis Baker – Soul On TopDelvon Lamarr Organ Trio – Hole In OneNeal Francis – Can't Stop The RainOtis Kane – Only YouPart II (32:54)Jordan Rakei – Send My LoveJazz Is Dead feat Roy Ayers – Sunflowers (inst)VanJess feat Lucky Daye – Slow DownEl Michels Affair meets Liam Bailey – Conquer & DivideMF Doom – Gazillion Ear (Man On Fire remix)Brijean – Day Dreaming (Rick Wade remix) Part III (60:07)The Wildhearts – SleepawayQuicksand – ColossusThe Killers – Quiet TownThe Darkness – MotorheartJoey Cape – A Good Year to Forget Part IV (93:11)Every Time I Die – Post-BoredomAnxious – Call From YouThe Cure – LovesongWednesday – Handsome ManCourtney Barnett – Before You Gotta GoPhoebe Bridgers – Nothing Else Matters
Liberated from a self-destructive past and born anew in sobriety, Francis has captured an inspired collection of songs steeped in New Orleans rhythms and early 70s rock n' roll. His music evokes a bygone era of R&B's heyday while simultaneously forging a new path on the musical landscape. We chat about his past with addiction, his sobriety and how it related to his music. The journey from a hospital bed to launching his solo career was neither predictable nor straightforward. There were musical fits and starts, relapses, and broken relationships. Yet the overwhelming passion driving Francis in this second act has been an abundance of creative energy. We also talk about growing up, various day jobs, working with soul musicians on the road, and his past bands that led up to his album 'Changes' and his new record due out soon. As broadcast June 18, 2021 with plenty of extra space to roam for all lovers of life out there. This week Danno's been going through some grief, and it got him thinking about all the suffering and loss we've experienced over the past 18 months. Thus, tonight's presentation is Life's Love & Lamentations, a representation of life here on earth and dedicated to anyone who's lost loved ones recently or during the course of the pandemic for any reason. It's exceedingly painful to lose any family, be they human or otherwise, and thus the message for tonight is simple: Tell the people that you love that they are exactly that. The JamBase Podcast 'Cluster Flies' series features a deep dive into Phish's song “Dogs Stole Things” and an interview with Neal Francis who covered the song for the project.
In this episode, Michael Amidei and Clifford Brooks interview the phenomenal musician, Neal Francis. Neal Francis (www.NealFrancis.com) “I just wanted to be honest about everything, from my musical influences to my story,” muses Neal Francis. After years of dishonest living—consumed by drugs, alcohol, and addiction—such sincerity is jarring from the 30-year-old Chicago-based musician. Born Neal Francis O’Hara, the piano prodigy found himself touring Europe by the age of 18 with Muddy Waters’ son and backing up other prominent blues artists coast-to-coast. In 2012, Francis joined popular instrumental funk band The Heard. With Francis at the creative helm, The Heard transformed into a national act, touring with boogaloo progenitors The New Mastersounds and chart toppers The Revivalists and appearing at Jazz Fest and Bear Creek. As The Heard’s star rose, however, Francis sunk deeper into addiction. Once a promising sideman, by 2015 he had been fired from his band, evicted from his apartment, and was perilously close to self-destruction. “When you get close to death like that you can feel it,” Francis recalls. An alcohol-induced seizure that year led to a broken femur, dislocated arm, and, finally, the realization that he needed to get clean. The journey from a hospital bed to launching his solo career was neither predictable nor straightforward. There were musical fits and starts, relapses, and broken relationships. Yet the overwhelming passion driving Francis in this second act has been an abundance of creative energy. “Drinking held my music in a half-cocked slingshot. I was always so consumed by drugs and alcohol that I didn’t have the time, money, or creative energy to do it. Sobriety let it loose.” Determined to realize the songs swirling in his head, Francis assembled a crack team of musicians, calling on bassist Mike Starr (The Heard) and drummer PJ Howard (The Revivalists, The Heard). He linked up with producer and analog-obsessive Sergio Rios (Orgone, Cee Lo Green, Alicia Keys) and self-funded a trip to Killion Sound in Los Angeles to record the initial batch of material. “I learned to trust my instincts in that room,” says Francis. Buoyed by classic horn arrangements and Rios’ fierce guitar work, the resulting tracks illuminate a lifetime spent studying the masters of rock and soul music. From the RMI electra-piano riff that kicks off “She’s A Winner” to the screaming organ swells of “This Time,” Francis and company let it all hang out. This is fun music, dance music. Yet verse after verse and chorus after chorus, Francis wrestles with his past in a straightforward manner: “It’s 5 o’clock in the morning, but I’m not home/ I’m surrounded by people, but I’m really alone.” Like Toussaint and Russell before him he’s married the upbeat rhythms of New Orleans R&B with the lyrical approach of a confessional singer/songwriter. The refrain on “This Time” serves as a foxhole prayer for a better future: “Let me get it this time/I won’t let you down/Let me get it this time/I won’t fool around.”
