TREASON: Claus von Stauffenberg and the Plot to kill Hitler

Send us a Text Message. At about 4 in the afternoon of 20 July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg arrived back in Berlin. He expected the insurrection to be in full swing, and was shocked to learn nothing had been done. He swung into action, and the first Valkyrie orders went out.Colonel General Fromm was unwilling to commit himself to the coup while Hitler's survival remained uncertain. Incensed when he learned Valkyrie orders had been issued without his knowledge, he ordered the arrest of the officer responsible. Instead, the conspirators arrested him.Now the Valkyrie orders went out across the Reich, and troops moved into position to take control. In Paris, all the key Nazis were arrested, and the capital was in the conspirators' hands. In Vienna, Nazi leaders were confined in separate rooms in a hotel. The conspirators had control there. In Berlin, Major Remer was ordered to secure the administrative district with a guard regiment, and had done this by early evening. The Nazi hierarchy was hours away in East Prussia, and still did not appreciate their danger.Remer entered the Propaganda Ministry, with orders to arrest Goebbels – the most senior Nazi in Berlin. Goebbels picked up the telephone and connected Remer to Hitler. Remer was a committed Nazi, and shocked to learn that the Führer was alive. Hitler now gave him full authority to put down the coup. From this point, the tide began to recede for the conspirators. Written and narrated by Brian WaltersOriginal music, editing and sound design by the amazing Sam LoyArtwork by Mike Vernon.Episode TranscriptA full transcript of the episode is available here.Read the book TREASONYou can read more about Claus von Stauffenberg and the German resistance to Hitler, in the book Treason by Brian Walters. For those with iPads, Treason is available as an interactive Apple Book here. The hard copy can be bought here.If you live out of Australia, the hard copy is best purchased from Blurb. There is also a Kindle version.ResourcesFor a list of the creative commons music and sound effects used in this episode, head here. Finally …If you liked the episode, please share it: the episode link is here. And you can help us by writing a brief review and giving us a (five star!) rating.By all means contact me, Brian Walters, by email on walters@vicbar.com.au TREASON: Claus von Stauffenberg and the plot to kill Hitler

Two ATP 500 tournaments this week means double the fun! At least for us, because the boys were hitting this week. In Vienna, we had our 13th Stefaniil match and while it lacked the flare of drama, we got a near cradle from Daniil to Stefanos. In the final, Daniil Medvedev's curse continues and Jannik Sinner captures his fourth title this year. (Four titles for World #4!) In Basel, Felix Auger-Alissame defends his title against Hubi Hurkacz. Miranda gives the lowdown on just how bad Felix's year has been, but it seems Felix's love of indoor hard courts has saved his ranking for now. This case made headlines and even served as inspiration for Lenny Abrahamson's 2015 film "Room." Her name: The Natascha Kampusch Case. From the young girl's abduction to its lasting impact on her life, you'll discover her harrowing journey. In Vienna, on March 2, 1998, a 10-year-old girl stands in front of her house's door. Today is a big day for her, as for the first time in her life, her parents allow her to go to school on her own. She makes her way through the apartment buildings, continuing toward her school, passing through a residential neighborhood. Her attention is drawn to a white delivery van, which stands out in this landscape. A man stands near the vehicle, lost in thought. An inner voice whispers for her to move away, change the sidewalk, flee. But it's already too late... SynopsisSome have claimed that it was on today's date in 1877 that the American inventor Thomas Edison recorded his own voice reciting, “Mary had a little lamb” on a tin-foil cylinder of his own design. Other historians date the precise birth of the phonograph earlier, others later. In any case, the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company wasn't established until January of 1878.Initially, music wasn't Edison's top priority: He thought his phonograph might be profitable as an aid to stenographers, or for families who wanted to record the last words of beloved relatives.Eventually, however, classical music and the phonograph began to interact. In London in 1888, a bit of a Crystal Palace performance of Handel's oratorio “Israel in Egypt” was captured on an Edison cylinder. In Vienna, Johannes Brahms, seated at the piano, recorded a snippet of his famous Hungarian Dance No. 3, with a spoken intro many wrongly assumed was by the composer himself. The voice of British composer Sir Arthur Sullivan WAS captured, however, commenting: “I am astonished—and terrified—at the thought that so much hideous and bad music may be put on record forever!” Well, Sir Arthur, I'm afraid there's no going back now…Music Played in Today's ProgramAntonin Dvořák (1841 - 1904) arr. How does it feel to see yourself as an "error" in the system? When you try out over 40 jobs and you fit into none? From system error to futurist, Ali Mahlodji discovered his sense of purpose in the midst of his life's difficulties. Having zigzagged his way from refugee to technology entrepreneur and CEO to global thought leader, he helps children and at-risk persons navigate the multiple paths to a sense of purpose in an uncertain world and often amid difficult circumstances. And he does so by drawing on his own inner and outer journey. As a boy, Ali had no idea what kind of career he wanted when he grew up. He envisioned a Handbook of Life Stories that would feature people in a variety of jobs from all around the world and would be available for anyone to borrow from libraries. When he was 30, he launched that vision as a digital platform (whatchado.com) with a few friends - an opportunity made possible by enhanced technology, social media, and the internet. At the time of its launch, whatchado.com featured 17 stories. Today, it is Europe's largest video job orientation platform featuring nearly 8,000 stories and hundreds of company profiles, including partners in education and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). If you asked Ali whether his younger self knew that he would one day become an award-winning entrepreneur, he would likely say no. "Life itself starts and ends by chance, and in between we think we can make plans for the next 40 years which is crazy. Life is a zigzag...The most beautiful thing about life is its uncertainty," says Ali. Ali was born in Tehran, Iran in 1981. His parents, both professionals in academia, took Ali and fled persecution in 1984. The family left Iran in the middle of the night and traveled to Turkey before making their way to Vienna, Austria. By the time Ali was 10 years old, he had lived in 13 different apartments. In Vienna, his mother cleaned for an architecture company while his father stocked groceries. When he was 13, Ali's parents divorced and he developed a stutter. He went on to drop out of school at 18, just before his exit exams. Ali remembers, "My father always told me to find out what I don't want to do, so the only way to do that was to try things out." And so he did, exploring more than 40 jobs before returning to finish his education in his late twenties. Ali went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Programming and joined the technology sector. After his father passed away, Ali felt called to do something that felt more meaningful, so he left his high paying job as a Global Systems Engineer and became a grammar school teacher until founding whatchado.com. Ali said, "A lot of young people don't have any idea of what to do in their future. It's so powerful when you have a chance to talk to someone about your experiences. We started this platform to show people if they want to have a job one day, don't think there's only one way to get there." Passionate about helping prepare youth for the future, Ali dedicates 50% of his work to young people pro bono. In his TEDx Talk, Ali encourages young people to question the status quo, to be grateful so they do not end up acting in greed, and to believe in the future because "we need the energy to create the kind of world we want to live in." In his voluntary work, Ali also works with adult prisoners and youth at-risk of exclusion. The other half of his time he works with leaders and focuses on professional development. Since launching whatchado.com, Ali has gone on to create start-ups such as futureRocka, ALIDO, and futureOne (which also has a podcast called futureOne HEROES). He is a best-selling author of multiple books including Und Was Machst Du So? (or, And What Are You Doing?), Next Level WORK, Ent-Decker Dein Wofur (or, Discover What You're Doing For), and Work Report. He has worked with various companies and organizations including Google, BMW, IBM, Siemens, Mastercard, Microsoft, Red Bull, and the United Nations. He has won numerous awards including HR Excellence Award and New Work Award (twice each), Voices Award for Best Business Podcast, Digital Communications Award, and Andreus Peace Award, among others. Ali currently lives in Vienna with his wife, whom he describes as "the woman of his dreams," and they have two super cool daughters. Ali travels around the world as a keynote speaker on topics such as focus and simplicity in business, mindful leadership, leading new generations, diversity and inclusion, and "the art of making one's own life authentic." Join us in conversation with this master speaker and author, who inspires us to live with relentless enthusiasm and compassion through all the zig-zags of life.

Welcome to September 9th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a serious schnitzel and a presidential bear. Apparently there was once a brewhaa over Wiener Schnitzel. It's still well known as an Austrian dish, where it's made with a few strict rules. In Vienna it is made by law with veal. The name “Wiener” is German for Viennese cutlet. A schnitzel is the method of preparing any meat that is pounded thin, breaded and fried. Austrians claim that the recipe came from an Austrian Field Marshal in 1869. But the Italians have a bone to pick with this story. They insist that the recipe was borrowed from their cotoletta alla milanese, which is identical except that the veal is left on the bone. On National Wiener Schnitzel Day, settle the score with your own favorite recipe. Or head to Wienerschnitzel if you don't have a dog in this fight. Theodore Roosevelt was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. But during his term as President, he became known for his compassionate side as well. On a hunting trip in 1902, Roosevelt's companions lassoed a black bear and gave him an opportunity to take a shot. But the President refused to kill the defenseless animal and reportedly said, “I couldn't be proud of myself if I shot an old, tired, worn-out bear that was tied to a tree.” News of this incident spread across the country and people admired his choice. In Brooklyn, New York a toymaker created a stuffed animal that was dubbed Teddy's Bear. That bear became wildly popular and was soon in high demand. On National Teddy Bear Day, we celebrate this loveable toy and the softer side of the President who inspired it.   I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. The French were stabilising after a nail bitingly close call. The Dutch were exorcising their demons, with a campaign aimed at clawing back the town of Breda, lost so painfully in 1625. Laura Tunbridge recommends her favourite recording of Beethoven's String Quartet in F, Op 18 No 1. In Vienna at the end of the 18th century, Beethoven was in his late 20s, the supreme keyboard composer-improviser of his day. With dogged determination and a degree of circumspection he began picking off various genres over which the shadows of the late Mozart and the very much alive Haydn loomed large. With piano sonatas, piano trios and string trios under his belt, it took two laborious years to complete the Op 18 set of six string quartets. The first of the set was intended to make a big impression. Its imposing scale and wide expressive range are typical of the young Beethoven, including a restless dynamic energy and a tragic slow movement inspired, he said, by the tomb scene of Romeo and Juliet.

The war in Ukraine has led to massive and understandable reactions against Russia – but are we pushing it too far? In Vienna a really bad deal seems to be hammered out with Iran - Israel is worried, but will not be bound by it. In Israel, political unrest is the name of the game, but the government continues somehow to survive. And in this week's Tora portion we talk about stopping up and looking back.

To not place a curse on the house of victories that the talented Estonian has built the last few months in her WTA run, Aldwin has decided not to name the player who is taking names herself! One of those players is the one Aldwin hath cursed this season by picking her to win so much... Garbine Muguruza, who was demolished 1 and 1 by 'The Player Who Shall Not Be Named' in Moscow, on route to her third title. This week that became fourth title with her back-to-back win in Transylvania, booking her spot into the WTA Finals and bumping bestie Ons Jabeur out of that final spot. Croatians emerged this week with Donna Vekic taking her first title in four years, and a resurgent Marin Cilic taking his second title of the season and making his second final in as many weeks. In Vienna, all eyes were on Frances Tiafoe where his talents were on full display. Like any good conductor, he brought the crowd engaged with flare and inspiring play, achieving three straight top 20 victories, including top seed Tsitsipas. For his semi-final opponent Jannik Sinner, who blew a set and 3-0 lead in his loss to Tiafoe, the 'antics' may have gone too far. What is your take on Tiafoe's engagement of both his opponent and the crowd during matches? Can it go too far? After all was said and done in Vienna, it would be Zverev taking home his fifth title of the season, adding to his two Masters titles and Olympic gold medal. Loving the show? This Bear Got It's Name From An American President. Welcome to September 9th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a serious schnitzel and a presidential bear. If the name Wienerschnitzel makes you think of hotdogs, you're not alone. But true Wiener Schnitzel is an Austrian dish that comes with a few strict rules.  In Vienna this dish is made with veal by law and the name “Wiener” is German for Viennese cutlet. Even before Theodore Roosevelt became President, he was an avid outdoorsman and hunter.  But during his term, he became known for his compassionate side as well.

Many include swimming pools, schools, medical and sports facilities, while people from all walks of life live side by side, encouraging social cohesion. Some have claimed that it was on today’s date in 1877 that the American inventor Thomas Edison recorded his own voice reciting, “Mary had a little lamb” on a tin-foil cylinder of his own design. Other historians date the precise birth of the phonograph earlier, others later. In any case, the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company wasn’t established until January of 1878. Initially, music wasn’t Edison’s top priority: He thought his phonograph might be profitable as an aid to stenographers, or for families who wanted to record the last words of beloved relatives. Eventually, however, classical music and the phonograph began to interact. In London in 1888, a bit of a Crystal Palace performance of Handel’s oratorio “Israel in Egypt” was captured on an Edison cylinder. In Vienna, Johannes Brahms, seated at the piano, recorded a snippet of his famous Hungarian Dance No. 3, with a spoken intro many wrongly assumed was by the composer himself. The voice of British composer Sir Arthur Sullivan WAS captured, however, commenting: “I am astonished—and terrified—at the thought that so much hideous and bad music may be put on record forever!” Well, Sir Arthur, I’m afraid there’s no going back now…

"Viele hätten gar nicht erwartet, dass ich antworte. New tech offers radio listeners more choice

New technology enables us to delight our listeners even more - particularly, radio operators are now offering more choice than ever before.   In Australia, Southern Cross Austereo have been doing a crafty job of launching additional brand extensions for rock and sport station Triple M, and top 40 channel Hit - so listeners can now enjoy Triple M branded stations playing modern rock, or classic hits, for example; while listeners who enjoy R’n’B Fridays on Hit can now find a channel that plays that music 24/7. The stations are available on DAB+ and online.   SCA’s work has resulted in 12% (https://www.radioinfo.com.au/news/more-data-scale-and-simplicity-grant-blackley-sca%E2%80%99s-annual-results) more audience for the radio company, in what they call a “brand-safe environment”.   104.6 RTL in Berlin, Germany, have also started doing something new just      last week that has helped offer more choice to their listeners - Arno and the Morning Crew, the live breakfast show from the station, is now available through their website and in their app with three different types of music (https://www.104.6rtl.com/arno-und-die-morgencrew/arno-die-morgencrew-hoch-3-id192747.html) . It’s the same live radio show that broadcasts on the #2-rated Hot AC station in Germany’s capital city, but now you can enjoy a version playing top 40 (“nothing but new hits”), or the show with a greatest hits format with songs from the 70s to now.   This is the first outing of this technology in Germany - Berlin’s “funniest morning show” plus three different music streams, all automatically stitched in.   In Vienna, Austria, Kronehit has a service within their app that allows you to listen to the station you enjoy, but skip songs or other elements that you don’t want to listen to. It automatically plays other, brand-relevant music, but continues to have the same presenters, weather, news and travel. They’ve been running this since June 2017.   And if you listen to Heart or Capital in the UK, you’ll hear a fair amount of national programming - but with presenter breaks that are occasionally local when they need to be. This method of “smart networking” allows a national presenter to still react to local events when they need to - from helping audiences with a power cut, to being able to promote their local breakfast shows when required.   New technology often has a bad name within radio chatrooms and forums: and there’s no doubt that poor voicetracking or networking is pretty obvious to listeners. But this new technology makes radio sound better and better able to compete against the world of Spotify and podcasting.   As Marc Haberland, PD at 104.6 RTL says, “radio’s strengths are music and the spoken word: presenters to move and entertain you, and news and information to keep you up to date and help you through your day.” Anything that helps keep radio’s strengths, but adds new choices to audiences, must be a good thing. Birnes - The Shocking Story of the Doctor Who May Have Changed History by Treating and Drugging JFK, Marilyn, Elvis, and Other Prominent Figures.Joining Ed Opperman for a fascinating discussion are award winning American authors Richard A. Lertzman, a film historian who co-authored Dr. Feel Good with ‎New York Times bestselling author Bill Birnes, a ufologist and publicist also known from the television show Ancient Aliens.During the show Bill Birnes says: “... In Vienna, in the 1930's, Max Jacobson gets turned by Soviet Intelligence into a Soviet Operative, and when he came to the United States later in the 1930's he came as a Soviet Operative. And in fact J. Edgar Hoover, who was then head of the FBI, knew that Jacobson was an operative and said: 'Fine. We now have a Soviet Operative in our sights and we will keep him under surveillance' – And that's way Jacobson from the day he arrived in the Untied States in New York City, he was under FBI surveillance... ”* Doctor Max Jacobson, whom the Secret Service under President John F. Kennedy code-named “Dr. Feelgood,” developed a unique “energy formula” that altered the paths of some of the twentieth century's most iconic figures, including President and Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis. JFK received his first injection (a special mix of “vitamins and hormones,” according to Jacobson) just before his first debate with Vice President Richard Nixon. The shot into JFK's throat not only cured his laryngitis, but also diminished the pain in his back, allowed him to stand up straighter, and invigorated the tired candidate. Kennedy demolished Nixon in that first debate and turned a tide of skepticism about Kennedy into an audience that appreciated his energy and crispness. What JFK didn't know then was that the injections were actually powerful doses of a combination of highly addictive liquid methamphetamine and steroids.Doctor Fell Good is available at Amazon.com as Kindle, Hardcover Paperback, and Audio CD. https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Feelgood-Shocking-Treating-Prominent/dp/1629145661/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=theopprep-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=7ed89d586c15e48201b6814e8d3425ab&creativeASIN=1629145661For more from Richard A. Pope Francis has opened up debate about his Church's most controversial teachings - on sex and the family. He's raised hope among those who'd like the Roman Catholic Church to change its stance on issues like homosexuality, divorce and birth control. But can he meet their expectations? In the first of a three-part series, Helen Grady reports from Austria, where priests and ordinary Catholics are already pushing the boundaries of doctrine. In Vienna, she meets Clemens Moser and Charlotte Leeb, a young couple who, although devout Catholics, are breaking Church rules by living together as an unmarried couple. And Wolfgang, a gay man who spent six years training to be a Roman Catholic priest, tells Helen about his decision to leave the Church he loves because of its opposition to homosexual relationships. In the village of Bad Mittendorf, deep in traditionally-conservative Alpine Austria, Helen meets parish priest Fr Michael Unger, who's proud of his most famous parishioner, the openly-gay performer Thomas Neuwirth - better known to millions as Conchita Wurst, who won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest sporting a glamorous evening gown - and a beard. And another of Fr Michael's parishioners, Andrea Strimizer, explains how her decision to divorce and remarry means that she's officially barred from receiving Holy Communion, the central rite of the Catholic faith. Back in Vienna, Helen visits the city's seminary, where trainee priest Johannes Eibensteiner explains how he's preparing to minister to Austria's largely liberal flock with gentleness and pragmatism. And she meets the city's Archbishop, Cardinal Christoph Schonborn. A charismatic and influential figure, seen by many as a future Pope, Cardinal Schonborn has developed a special ministry for divorced and remarried Catholics. He says the Church must not lose faith in the traditional Catholic family, but meet people where they are and help them to inch gradually closer towards doctrinal ideals.

My all-time favorite basso passed away today.Cesare Siepi was the possessor of a luscious, velvety voice and on stage he was sensational.I saw him countless times and am so saddened at his passing. Here is a brief article about his  many successes.: His international reputation was established in 1950, when Sir Rudolf Bing brought him to the Metropolitan Opera in New York to open the 1950 season as King Philip II in Don Carlos. He was to remain principal bass at the Met until 1974, adding roles such as Boris Godunov (in English) and Gurnemanz in Parsifal (in German), and singing all the major roles of the bass repertoire. His also gave his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1950, and appeared there regularly until the mid 1970s. In 1953 Siepi debuted at the Salzburg Festival with a legendary production of Don Giovanni conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, staged by Herbert Graf, and designed by Clemens Holzmeister. He made an immediate impact in the title role of Don Giovanni which became perhaps his best known role, as it had been for the most famous Italian bass of the generation before, Ezio Pinza. This performance has been released on CD, and a 1954 mounting of this production was filmed in color and released in 1955. Siepi was a frequent guest at the Vienna State Opera. In 43 performances he sang Don Giovanni, more often than any other singer in modern times except for Eberhard Waechter. In 1967 Siepi was Don Giovanni in a controversially received production staged by Otto Schenk and designed by Luciano Damiani that showed Mozart's masterpiece in the light of the commedia dell'arte, emphasizing the comic and ironic elements of this opera (conductor Josef Krips strongly opposed this production's concept). In Vienna he also sang Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Colline (La bohème), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Padre Guardian (La forza del destino 1974 in a new production conducted by Riccardo Muti), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Mephisto (Faust), Filippo II (Don Carlos), and Ramphis (Aïda). His final performance at the Vienna State Opera was in Norma (Oroveso) in 1994. He was a particularly fine recital artist, especially in Community Concerts under Columbia Artist Management, and a sensitive interpreter of German Lieder. He married Met ballerina Luellen Sibley and they have two children. Siepi enjoyed a long career, and performed regularly until the 1980s, including lead roles in the ill-fated Broadway musicals Bravo Giovanni and Carmelina. In addition to his studio recordings, there are also many live recordings of performances of his major roles. According to the Italian Wikipedia, Siepi's formal farewell to the operatic stage occurred at the Teatro Carani in Sassuolo on 21 April 1989. Indeed, Capon's List shows live recordings made as late as 1988. Siepi's last studio recording was as the old King Archibaldo in RCA's 1976 taping of Montemezzi's L'amore dei tre re, with Anna Moffo and Plácido Domingo in the cast.     Rest in Peace, my beloved Cesare. In Vienna today, where he is meeting with leaders of the European Union, a few hundreds demonstrators carried signs calling President Bush the "Number One Terrorist in the World." At a heated press conference, the President dismissed as "absurd" polls showing that Europeans think the US is more dangerous than Iran. The President also said he wants to close the Guant--namo Bay prison, and the Chancellor of Austria signaled possible help in re-locating prisoners. What about Iran, Iraq and Europe's own problems with radical Islam? We hear more from political scientists and journalists in the US and Austria on the latest attempt to mend fences with America's most important allies. Making News: Seven Marines, One Sailor to Be Charged in Murder of IraqiAs the Senate debated timetables for troop withdrawal today, the Pentagon announced that 21,000 soldiers will be sent to replace those who are coming home. Meantime, the Marine Corps plans to charge seven Marines and a sailor with murder. They're being held at the Camp Pendleton Marine Base in Southern California, where Tony Perry is reporting for the Los Angeles Times.Reporter's Notebook: Embryonic Stem Cells Found to Reverse Paralysis in RatsResearchers at Johns Hopkins University have found a way to use stem cells to re-grow the circuitry needed to move a muscle. The result has been that partially paralyzed rats are able to walk. The breakthrough is being called a "first step...a proof of principle," though application to human beings might be a long way off. James Battey heads the Stem Cell Task Force at the National Institutes of Health.
