The Glee Club is "so emotional" over the loss of Whitney Houston and getting ready to say goodbye to their high school years, so leave it to Mr. Schue to assign a project.  That's right, it's an electrifying tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston, and it starts strong with the opening performance of "How Will I Know" … a goose-bump-inducing number which leads Kevin and Jenna to wonder why Amber didn't get any solos this episode.  Plus, the song Kevin hated doing at the time, the scoop on the scene added to perhaps squash off-camera rumors, and the song they only had minutes to learn before shooting, so they hid the lyrics behind Jenna's back. Literally! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Elle and Chris take a deep dive into I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022), a biopic about Whitney Houston's own dive from the highest heights of vocal talent to drug-induced drowning in a bathtub. Alternate heartbreakingly insensitive episode titles that we couldn't bring ourselves to use: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Crack), Saving All My Crack For You, Greatest Crack of All, I Will Always Love Crack, I'm Your Crack Baby Tonight, and I Go To The Rock (an actual Whitney song title). Stacey and I dive into the film and give a review .. it is one of the best releases thus far this year in Jr's opinion . Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a 2022 American biographical musical drama film directed by Kasi Lemmons, from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten, based on the life and career of American singer and actress Whitney Houston. The film stars Naomi Ackieas Houston with Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams, and Clarke Peters in supporting roles. An authorized biopic on Houston's life was announced in early 2020, with Ackie cast in the lead role that December, and the rest of the cast signing on later the next year. Produced on a $45 million budget, filming took place in Massachusetts and New Jersey from August to December 2021. Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody was released in the United States on December 23, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Ackie and Tucci as well as the music sequences, but criticized the screenplay. What is Ali's film of the year? You may be able to guess but just to maintain an air of mystery, let's say it's A BIG SURPRISE (it's not). Then there are the big movies of next year to look forward to - so many blockbusters it's almost unbelievable - plus a cheeky 'last interview of the year' with the stars of Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, namely Naomi Ackie and Stanley Tucci. And if you're reading this podcast description, let us just say... MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It's our last episode of 2022! So we're wrapping things up with a round of Ask Us Anything. Among the questions Alonso and Christy answer: what's the hardest part of being a film critic, what would we put on a Sight & Sound ballot, and what's a great so-bad-it's-good Christmas movie? Also, the brilliant Katie Walsh returns to help Christy review “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” We have very different opinions on the Whitney Houston biopic. We hope you enjoy this episode and everything we've shared over the year. We're truly grateful to have you spend time with us, and we look forward to seeing more of you in 2023. Happy Holidays! * Head over to our YouTube channel for a LIVE “Glass Onion” spoiler discussion on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at noon PST. You can find us here. *Trying to keep off or lose those extra holiday pounds? CAROL Bike is a great way to go. If you're planning on watching Whitney Houston: I Want to Dance with Somebody because you want to celebrate the woman behind the icon, this isn't what you've been waiting for. Script writer Anthony McCarten (The Two Popes,  Bohemian Rhapsody) designed a narrative built on innuendo, interviews, videos, and b-reel footage to such a degree that its central character, Whitney Huston, is never more than a plot device in a highlight reel of her career. And director Kasi Lemmons (Self-Made: Inspired by the life of Madame C. J. Walker), who should know better than to be satisfied with caricatures of Black people, did little to steer the story much deeper than offering a parody of a life lived. This talented cast's been set adrift with no hope of ever fitting an extraordinary life in such a meandering, and sadly subpar, homage.  Director: Luca Guadagnino Writers: David Kajganich, Camille DeAngelis Starring: Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams, Clarke Peters Runtime: 146 (very long) minutes Synopsis:  A joyous, emotional, heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston, one of the greatest female R&B pop vocalists of all time, tracking her journey from obscurity to musical superstardom. Listen to the Full Review:  Ro and Brandon accidentally go long (but spoiler-free) about where things went wrong and why it's time we as a community stop accepting mediocrity when it comes to celebrating our icons on film.  Like what you hear? Director Kasi Lemmons discusses her new film, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, a biopic of the performer Whitney Houston, whose unmatched vocal power saw her become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time. She talks about exploring the darker sides of Whitney's life and working with British actor Naomi Ackie who stars in the title role. Hannah Khalil, writer-in-residence at Shakespeare's Globe theatre, tells Luke about her retelling of the classic 1001 Nights story cycle - Hakawatis: Women of the Arabian Nights, which reimagines Scheherazade's storytelling feat as a team writing effort. Plus, in the final week of the World Cup in Qatar, we look at the new art and architecture in the country: the huge public art programme featuring the work of over 100 artists, including Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, and Olafur Eliasson, plus new galleries, museums, and stadiums. To discuss Qatar's cultural ambitions, and the question of culture washing in the face of rights concerns, Luke is joined by Hannah McGivern of The Art Newspaper, and Rowan Moore, architecture critic at The Observer. Presenter: Luke Jones Producer: Julian May
