Cassandra Jenkins is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Cassandra is an amazing and inspiring songwriter and musician. She's also a friend that I've made music with. We talked about growing up in a musical household, steel drums, “I Want to Dance With Somebody,” saving voicemails, our 2019 tour, her decision to re-record her most recent album, working in a flower shop, and so much more. Cassandra is super insightful, and I was so happy to finally have her on the podcast. Listen and subscribe!

The Glee Club is "so emotional" over the loss of Whitney Houston and getting ready to say goodbye to their high school years, so leave it to Mr. Schue to assign a project. That's right, it's an electrifying tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston, and it starts strong with the opening performance of "How Will I Know" … a goose-bump-inducing number which leads Kevin and Jenna to wonder why Amber didn't get any solos this episode. Plus, the song Kevin hated doing at the time, the scoop on the scene added to perhaps squash off-camera rumors, and the song they only had minutes to learn before shooting, so they hid the lyrics behind Jenna's back. Literally! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Elle and Chris take a deep dive into I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022), a biopic about Whitney Houston's own dive from the highest heights of vocal talent to drug-induced drowning in a bathtub. Alternate heartbreakingly insensitive episode titles that we couldn't bring ourselves to use: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Crack), Saving All My Crack For You, Greatest Crack of All, I Will Always Love Crack, I'm Your Crack Baby Tonight, and I Go To The Rock (an actual Whitney song title). We know it's not right, but it's okay. The Deluxe Edition Network Podcasts of the Month for May 2023 are Horsin' Around and The Reel Drunks. What is Ali's film of the year? You may be able to guess but just to maintain an air of mystery, let's say it's A BIG SURPRISE (it's not). Then there are the big movies of next year to look forward to - so many blockbusters it's almost unbelievable - plus a cheeky 'last interview of the year' with the stars of Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, namely Naomi Ackie and Stanley Tucci. And if you're reading this podcast description, let us just say... MERRY CHRISTMAS!
It's our last episode of 2022! So we're wrapping things up with a round of Ask Us Anything. Among the questions Alonso and Christy answer: what's the hardest part of being a film critic, what would we put on a Sight & Sound ballot, and what's a great so-bad-it's-good Christmas movie? Also, the brilliant Katie Walsh returns to help Christy review “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” We have very different opinions on the Whitney Houston biopic. We hope you enjoy this episode and everything we've shared over the year. We're truly grateful to have you spend time with us, and we look forward to seeing more of you in 2023. If you're planning on watching Whitney Houston: I Want to Dance with Somebody because you want to celebrate the woman behind the icon, this isn't what you've been waiting for. Script writer Anthony McCarten (The Two Popes, Bohemian Rhapsody) designed a narrative built on innuendo, interviews, videos, and b-reel footage to such a degree that its central character, Whitney Huston, is never more than a plot device in a highlight reel of her career. And director Kasi Lemmons (Self-Made: Inspired by the life of Madame C. J. Walker), who should know better than to be satisfied with caricatures of Black people, did little to steer the story much deeper than offering a parody of a life lived. This talented cast's been set adrift with no hope of ever fitting an extraordinary life in such a meandering, and sadly subpar, homage. Director: Luca Guadagnino Writers: David Kajganich, Camille DeAngelis Starring: Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams, Clarke Peters Runtime: 146 (very long) minutes Synopsis: A joyous, emotional, heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston, one of the greatest female R&B pop vocalists of all time, tracking her journey from obscurity to musical superstardom. In this episode, Mike gives you two famous actors with the question being: did they grow up with famous parents or are they ‘self-made'? He gives the stories behind how they got their start in Hollywood, did they grow up in Rags or Riches? In the movie review, Mike gives his review of Do Revenge on Netflix starring Maya Hawke which is very reminiscent of a 90's / early 2000's teen movie. And in the trailer park, we'll take a look at the new Whitney Houston biopic coming to theaters this December called ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody'. New Episodes Every Monday!
