Whitney Houston's self-titled debut album, released on February 14, 1985, introduced the world to one of the most powerful and iconic voices in music history. Blending pop, R&B, and soul, the album showcased Houston's extraordinary vocal talent and set the stage for her legendary career.Featuring timeless hits like "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love for You," and "Greatest Love of All," the album was both a critical and commercial success, spending 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and eventually selling over 22 million copies worldwide. The record's lush production, courtesy of Clive Davis and a team of top-tier producers, perfectly complemented Houston's emotive and technically flawless voice. With this album, Whitney Houston not only redefined pop and R&B but also broke barriers, becoming the first debut album by a female artist to produce three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains a landmark release, symbolizing the arrival of a once-in-a-generation talent and setting a new standard for vocal excellence in popular music.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. The Glee Club is "so emotional" over the loss of Whitney Houston and getting ready to say goodbye to their high school years, so leave it to Mr. Schue to assign a project. That's right, it's an electrifying tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston, and it starts strong with the opening performance of "How Will I Know" … a goose-bump-inducing number which leads Kevin and Jenna to wonder why Amber didn't get any solos this episode. Plus, the song Kevin hated doing at the time, the scoop on the scene added to perhaps squash off-camera rumors, and the song they only had minutes to learn before shooting, so they hid the lyrics behind Jenna's back. Literally! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're going extra-deep this week with alternative rock group The Coolies. The name comes from a derogatory term for 19th century Chinese immigrants who had to work hard for little pay. The Atlanta based group was only around for about three years and produced two albums. The first called "dig..?" was largely a collection of Simon and Garfunkel covers. Their second album, Doug, is a rock opera with an odd premise.Doug follows the rise and fall of a skinhead named Doug. He kills a transvestite who happens to be a cook, and becomes rich by using the stolen recipe book. The money is spent in riotous living, and in the end Doug ends up right where he began. The Coolies vocalist and front man was Clay Harper. Other band members included Jeb Baldwin, Rob Gal, Teddy Murray, and for this album had Frogg Jaguar Mellonball (most interesting artist name) on percussion. He replaced Billy Burton, who was percussionist for the first album but was unavailable for “Doug” due to his commitments to The Swimming Pool Q's, another locally well known alternative band.Harper would go on to be the owner of Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina restaurants in Atlanta. It is not believed that the events from the Rock Opera are in any way connected to Harper's future culinary success.Wayne takes us on this deep cut journey to explore one of his favorite albums. Ice Cold SoulThe lead track introduces Doug, the main character of the rock opera. He is a skin head with the Pledge of Allegiance tattooed on the side of his head. He hangs out with his fellow skin heads stealing from people, beating them up, and generally being intimidating. “Schlitz Malt Liquor is my favorite food and pissed off is my favorite mood.”Pussy CookThe transvestite cook is warned not to walk where the “skin heads chill,” but failed to heed the warning. After beating up and killing the cook, Doug and his gang “open up the purse to get a good look. Got the money and the dope and the recipe book.” There are a lot of similarities between this song and “Cooky Puss” by the Beastie Boys, which this song spoofs.40 Foot StretchThis track continues the tale with Doug living large in the back of a stretch limousine. We're beginning to question whether that recipe book was referencing food...or something else! This song has a sound reminiscent of Miami Vice.Crack Pipe BurningIt is becoming obvious that things are not going to end happily ever after with Doug. The reference at the end of the song to “I got blisters on my fingers” hearkens back to a statement Ringo Starr makes at the end of the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do You Love Me by the Contours (from the motion picture “Dirty Dancing”)This 1962 single made a resurgence after appearing in 1987's “Dirty Dancing” film, and was on the charts in the summer of 1988. STAFF PICKS:Rough Night in Jericho by Dreams So RealBruce stays with the local flavor with his staff pick featuring a trio from Athens, Georgia. The lead-off and title track from the band's second album hit number 28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. The band produced three albums in total, with this song being their most successful single. Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl Rob brings us a more pop song than he normally features. Keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill met singer Shannon Rubicam at a wedding where they were hired to perform, and later got married themselves, making it a “boy meets girl” story. In addition to this song which made it to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo also wrote songs for other performers including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil Lynch's staff pick is a protest song from Australia's Midnight Oil. It criticizes the Australian government for its treatment of Aboriginal communities in forcing them off their lands. Midnight Oil performed this song at the Sydney Olympics, and wore jackets that said, “sorry” after the Australian government would not apologize for the treatment of Aboriginal people. This Note's for You by Neil Young & The Bluenotes Wayne features another protest song, this time from Neil Young. At the time many rock bands and artists were being recruited to appear in commercials for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, and other consumer goods and drinks. MTV controversially banned the video for a period of time due to concerns from advertisers, proving Young's point. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:End Title (from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?") by Alan SilvestriThis live action/animation combination was a hit on the big screens in June of 1988.

Song: Dear Future MeSong by: James FortunePhoto credit: Aberdeen Proving GroundUsage: CC BY 2.0Intro by: Gail NoblesKeyboardist : Gail NoblesVocals: Gail NoblesHello! I'm Gail Nobles on The Gospel Greats. “Dear Future Me” is a gospel song by James Fortune. I'm impressed with the cover of the single. Half of his face is the future. The other half is probably him in the present, but what I'm most impressed with is his single, “Dear Future Me”. James Fortune is a gospel music recording artist, songwriter, and producer. He is also a radio personality on 1190 AM WLIB. As much or more a preacher, choir leader, master of ceremonies, and worship service manager as he is straight -up singer. Fortune's strength is in understanding how to put gospel and praise songs over to a young 21st century audience, and with his featured choir, FIYA (which stands for Free in Yahweh's Abundance), he freely incorporates hip-hop arrangements and urban beats into his recordings according to his bio. You can hear it in his song, “Dear Future Me”. In the song, James Fortune asked the questions that many of us ask when we are trying to get somewhere. Will I ever move from this place? Is it worth the fight? How Will I Know? Where Will I Go? You can hear the single on Spotify. So make sure to check it out. I'm Gail Nobles on The Gospel Greats.

Artist Salman Toor, 38, had his first solo museum show in late 2020 at the Whitney, an acclaimed exhibition of 15 paintings titled How Will I Know, which the New York Times called “a brilliant debut.” Since then, Toor, who has shown work at the Frick Collection, has rocketed to stardom in the art world with a stunning body of work in lush green evocative of 16th and 17th century-style old masters paintings. Many of Toor's pieces depict young, queer South Asian people, which he says are based on himself and his friends, finding connection in a world dominated by white patriarchy. On the episode of Tell Me About Your Father, Salman talks with co-host Matt Phillp about growing up queer in Pakistan, his relationship with his father and mother both as an adolescent and now, and how they view his success. They compare notes about attending all-boys prep schools in outposts of the British empire, and Salman talks about a recurring figure in his work that he calls a “shadow father”, paintings of which will be featured in another exhibition this May at the Baltimore Museum of Art. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

THE WHITNEY SOUL PODCASTStory by: Gail NoblesKeyboard player: Gail NoblesPodcast vocals: Gail NoblesSong: Tonight I'm AlrightSong by: Michael WaldenPhoto Credit: By Craig ONeal, Usage: CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=85864151Tody's Topic is Michael Walden. It was 1979 when I heard Michael Walden's song, “Tonight I'm Alright”. I didn't know back then that Michael Walden was Michael Walden. He workded with Whitney Houston. Michael Walden has been a hit record producer, songwriter, artist, and drummer. He produced a great hit for Whitey Houston. Michael wrote, “How Will I Know”. He also worked and wrote for other artists. Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Tevin Campbell, and Stacy Lattisaw just to name a few. When I heard Walden in 1979 singing, Toight I'm Alright, I was a child, and it was during the time when there was no lyrics written for you to understand words to songs. I was hearing some way off base words on the break. He would sing. “I know everything's gonna be alright.”Back then, I thought he was saying A instead of Everything because I couldn't make out the rest of the words. I would say: A B C call me tonight. I filled in words where I didn't understand. I was rewriting the song, and it was a song that I enjoyed hearing. I wanted to know the right words to the lyrics so bad. I always remembered the song, but as time went on, as I grew older, I didn't hear the song anymore, and bits and pieces of the song was left in my mind. So when I got grown and was able to go to work, I asked my co-workers about Michael Walden's song. I didn't even know that Michael Walden was the voice of that song. So I would sing the chorus part and the base. People would say who it sounded like but nobody knew. So I got online and wrote the part that I knew in the search dngine. The song was not easily found, but I found it, and I was glad to see it because I was starting to think it didn't exist anymore or forgotten. When I found it, the words were so clear. Maybe the words weren't clear to me in my childhood days because I was hearing it from radio or something, and it wasn't as clear. I had a hard time finding the lyrics online because I didn't know the author and the chorus wasn't quite enough during that time. Now lets talk about when Walden first started working with Whitney Houston. I enjoy Michael Walden's story about Whitney Houston. He talked about how he first met Whitney in the studio. How thin she was with a big sound. Walden was amazed at how she could make that kind of sound. And you know how Whitney Sings. She really sings out and loud and it takes practice too. “How Will I Know” was the song Walden worked on for Whitney. Michael Walden is a very talented guy. He knew Whitney's sound and what sounded right. How Will I Know was Whitney's second number one single. Michael Walden tickled me when he talked about how Whitney would stare at him and dare him to say anything and all that. Whitney knew she could sing becuase she was taught by the best. Her mom. You're listening to the Whitney Soul Podcast. Today's Topic is Michael Walden.

Whitney Houston is the self-titled debut studio album by American singer Whitney Houston. It was released on February 14, 1985, by Arista Records. The album initially had a slow commercial response, but began getting more popular in the summer of 1985. It eventually topped the Billboard 200 for 14 weeks in 1986, generating three number-one singles—"Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know" and "Greatest Love of All" (a cover of "The Greatest Love of All", originally recorded in 1977 by George Benson)—on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which made it both the first debut album and the first album by a solo female artist to produce three number-one singles.[4][5] The album topped the albums charts in many countries, including Canada,[6] Australia,[7] Norway[8] and Sweden,[9] peaking at number 2 in the United Kingdom,[10] Germany,[11] and Switzerland.[12] The album was certified diamond for shipments of 10 million units or more on March 16, 1999, and later 13× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on July 29, 1999.[13][14] With sales of over 22 million copies, Whitney Houston is one of the best selling albums of all-time.[15][16][17] In 1986, at the 28th Grammy Awards, Whitney Houston received four nominations; including Album of the Year[18] and won one, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for her song "Saving All My Love for You".[19] For the 29th Grammy Awards of 1987, the album earned one nomination for Record of the Year for "Greatest Love of All".[20] In 2003, the album was ranked number 254 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[21] In its 2012 edition, the album was ranked at number 257. In honor of its 25th anniversary, the album was reissued as Whitney Houston - The Deluxe Anniversary Edition on January 26, 2010, an expanded edition with five bonus tracks including the a cappella version of "How Will I Know" that original 12-inch remixes, a bookletking the history of the original album, along with a DVD of live performances and interviews by Whitney Houston and Clive Davis.

In an industry where most startups go up, down, and disappear, Danielle Guizio is a New York-based fashion designer on Forbes’s 30 under 30 list. If you think of the biggest celebrities on the style pages today, you’re likely to find a photo of them wearing her designs. She describes the line – which shares her name, Danielle Guizio – as “celebrating the modern-day woman who aims to deviate from the traditional and push boundaries in all aspects of life.” She has even revived the corset, which Ariana Grande wore in black satin on the set of her music video for “7 Rings.” Because of her age, one might assume Danielle came to her success in a straight line. But as we hear in her interview with host Kevin Burke, Danielle’s coming of age was more jagged and uncertain, filled with experiences that brought her face-to-face with some scary and ugly sides of life. Out of all this, she placed her big bet on designing clothes that make young women like her, as she says, feel confident and strong. Your Hometown is a show where the local is the epic. It’s that time again! Very fun episode this week. I was delighted to talk to Chris Hillman about his work with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, as well as the process he went through to write his recent autobiography. We chat about memory, his songwriting process, and what people misunderstand about him. You might not recognise the name Boy Meets Girl, an American pop duo consisting of George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, but you will undoubtedly be familiar with some of their work. As a band they are best known for 80’s classic “Waiting For A Star To Fall”, but they’re also the writing team behind Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” and the smash hit (is that still a thing?) “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. They were so much fun to hang out with; I really enjoyed myself on this one. Twitter: @signalspodcastInstagram: @sendingsignalspodcastboymeetsgirlmusic.comchrishillman.com
This week, Emma is joined by friend and fellow Elphaba, the incredible West End Leading Lady, Louise Dearman who made history by being the first and only actress to play both Glinda and Elphaba. They discuss their experience of portraying the green witch in Wicked, the benefits of music for babies and young children ; a subject of particular interest to Louise following the release of her album of lullabies, 'Bedtime Baby' and their shared failures when it comes to operating a microphone at home! They also talk about their hopes of shaking off the perfectionism and reclaiming the joy of just singing for the love of it. On this episode, Dave covers hot takes on Harry Styles to Train to Whitney Houston. Hot Takes on this episode include: Hot Take 1: In “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles, the end of the chorus where the words “watermelon sugar high” are mashed together at a faster pace is the ultimate music-brain payoff.Hot Take 2: In “Drops of Jupiter” by Train the chorus is not the hook. The singeable part of the song is in the turnaround: after every chorus and at the end. Hot Take 3: Eddie Floyd’s “Knock on Wood” is one of the greatest soul songs of all-time. Hot Take 4: “Waiting for a Star to Fall” by Boy Meets Girl is in Dave’s top 20 songs of all-time. It was written by Shannon Rubicam and George Merrill, who also wrote Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”.Hot Take 5: “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston has a bridge with 12 bars, longer than the usual 8 or 4. Then the song key changes down while Whitney’s vocals go up. This creates a really engaging effect.

Es ist eine sehr besondere Geschichte vom gorgeous Gospel-Girl from the Hood mit der gottgegebenen, glasklaren Stimme, mit der sie uns alle irgendwann mal berührt oder bewegt hat. Entweder zu Tränen in „Bodyguard“ mit ihrem größten Hit „I Will Always Love You“ oder zum Tanzen mit Partyhits wie „I Wanna Dance With Somebody“ oder „How Will I Know“. Es ist aber auch eine herzzerreißende Geschichte von Sucht, Verzicht, unterdrückten Gefühlen, gesellschaftlichem Druck, Missverständnissen und Einsamkeit, an der sie vor acht Jahren, am 11. Februar 2012 zugrunde gegangen ist - wir und Whitney erzählen euch diese Geschichte und die Geschichten drumherum in Folge #016Whitney Houston.

Mr. Chamberlain asked if I would like to come to Decatur and work for the Staley Company. [George Chamberlain was general superintendent of the A. E. Staley Company, a food starch company of Decatur, Illinois. In 1919, the company's Fellowship Club had formed a football team. It had done well against other local teams, but Mr. Staley wanted to build it into a team that could compete successfully with the best semi-professional and industrial teams in the country.” - George Halas, in his book Halas by Halas. 46. The franchise was founded in Decatur, Illinois, on September 17, 1920 and moved to Chicago in 1921. It is one of only two remaining franchises from the NFL's founding in 1920, along with the Arizona Cardinals, which was originally also in Chicago. Originally named the Decatur Staleys, the company hired George Halas, a Chicago native, and Edward "Dutch" Sternaman in 1920 to run the team. The 1920 Decatur Staleys season was their inaugural regular season completed in the newly formed American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League (NFL) in 1922). The team relocated to Chicago in 1921, where the club was renamed the Chicago Staleys. Under an agreement reached by Halas and Sternaman with Staley, Halas purchased the rights to the club from Staley for $100 (~$1,400 in 2019). In 1922, Halas changed the team name from the Staleys to the Bears. The team moved into Wrigley Field, which was home to the Chicago Cubs baseball franchise and, as with several early NFL franchises, the Bears derived their nickname from their city's baseball team. Halas liked the bright orange-and-blue colors of his alma mater, the University of Illinois, and the Bears adopted those colors as their own. 47. The 1985 Bears were simply the greatest team ever, and here's why. The collection of players Chicago put together not just on defense, but also offense, made them one of the most talented teams ever assembled. The Bears steam-rolled their way through the regular season with a 15-1 record. In Super Bowl XX, they destroyed the Pats 46-10, with the only 10 points they would give up in the entire playoffs. At the time, the 36-point win was the largest in Super Bowl history. Chicago finished with an 18-1 overall record and allowed only five of the teams they faced that year to score more than 10 points in a game. They had the greatest running back in NFL history, Walter Payton. They had the best middle linebacker in NFL history, Mike Singletary. And they even had the 1985 Coach of the Year, Mike Ditka. But, most importantly, they had the greatest team in the history of the NFL. (Including the “Punkie” QB and the Fridge!) They were the 1985 Chicago Bears. R.I.P. Sweetness. Although you wore No. 34 on the field, you will always be No. 1 in Bears fans' hearts! - MATT REAGAN [https://bleacherreport.com/articles/136752-1985-chicago-bears-the-greatest-team-ever] 48. Featured Artist: Janet Damita Jo Jackson (@ 20 yrs. old): a.k.a, Ms. Jackson if you’re Nasty. 81. One of the most awarded artists in the world, her career longevity, hit records and trail of achievements reflect her influence in shaping and redefining the scope of popular music. In her more than four decades of music career that has spanned over eleven studio albums and seven world tours, Jackson has sold more than 100 million records with four of her albums being included in Rolling Stone's ‘500 Greatest Albums’ and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's ‘Definitive 200’ list. She was a fixture on MTV and a major role model for young artist. 82. Childhood and career: Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, she was the youngest of the ten children. With the entire family into the entertainment business, it was only natural for Janet Jackson to follow suit. She recorded herself in the studio and by the age of seven, had performed at the Las Vegas Strip at MGM Casino. In 1976, Jackson began acting in the variety show ‘The Jacksons’. The following year, she grabbed a main role as Penny Gordon Woods in the sitcom ‘Good Times’. This was followed by a role in ‘A New Kind of Family’ and a recurring role in ‘Different Strokes’. At the age of 16, Jackson received a contract with A&M Records. Under the label, she released her debut album ‘Janet Jackson’ in 1982. The album peaked at number 63 on the Billboard 200, and number six on the publication’s R&B albums chart. In 1984, Jackson released her second album ‘Dream Street’. The album was moderately successful, peaking at 147 on the Billboard 200, and number 19 on the R&B albums chart. Its lead single ‘Don’t Stand a Chance’ peaked at number nine on Billboard’s R&B singles chart. Continuous tiffs with her father led Jackson to come out from under his shell. She then teamed with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to come up with her third album ‘Control’ in 1986 which became a major hit. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified five times platinum by the RIAA, selling over ten million copies worldwide. 83. ‘Control’ gave Jackson her first breakthrough success. It not just spawned top five singles but also gave her, her first number one hit on the Hot 100. The album went on to receive six Billboard Awards, including Top Pop Singles Artist and three Grammy nominations. It also won four American Music Awards from twelve nominations, the highest ever till date. ‘Control’ gained crossover pop appeal, giving Jackson her own identity, away from her clan. Following the stupendous success of ‘Control’, Jackson was bounded by the pressure to come up with its sequel. However, she refrained from bowing down to the pressure and instead came up with her fourth album ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ that dealt with a socially conscious theme. 84. Open Comments: 85. Question 1: Nipple Gate - In a 2006 interview with MTV, Justin Timberlake admitted that Jackson suffered more in wake of the controversy. “If you consider it 50-50, then I probably got 10 percent of the blame,” Timberlake told MTV’s John Norris in a 2006 interview. “I think America is harsher on women. I think America is unfairly harsh on ethnic people.” He also said that he could have “handled [the aftermath] better.” - Why did she get crushed? 86. Question 2: TMZ 6/23/2019 - Janet Jackson has broken her silence amid new allegations against her brother, Michael Jackson, in "Leaving Neverland" -- and her message is simple ... his rep will be just fine. Janet says, "I love it when I see kids emulating him, when adults still listen to his music. It just lets you know the impact that my family has had on the world." She added, "I hope I'm not sounding arrogant in any way -- I'm just stating what it is. It's really all God's doing, and I'm just thankful for that." She's also defended him in the past, specifically when Jordy Chandler accused Michael of sexual abuse in '93. At the time, Janet called it a money grab. – Denial or Business? 87. Featured Artist: Anita Denise Baker (@ 28 yrs. old): a.k.a., 'The Songstress'. Singer and songwriter. 88. Childhood & Early Life: Born in Toledo, Ohio. She was abandoned by her parents at the age of two and was raised by a foster family in Detroit, Michigan. Her foster parents passed away when she was only 12 and her foster sister took care of her upbringing after the death of her foster parents. Baker had an interest in music from an early age and started singing R & B in nightclubs in Detroit by the time she was 16. It was after one of those performances that funk band leader David Washington of ‘Chapter 8’ identified her and asked her to go to go for an audition in order to join the band. 89. Career: Baker became a member of the band ‘Chapter 8’ in 1975 (@ 17 yrs. old) and following a string of performances, the band was handed a deal by Ariola Records in 1979. The group’s first album ‘Chapter 8’ was released in 1979 and featured the singles "Ready for Your Love," a duet between Baker and bandmate Gerald Lyles, and the Baker-led "I Just Want to Be Your Girl." In 1979, Ariola Records was taken over by Arista Records and Chapter 8 lost their contract as Arista Records was of the view that Baker was not fit to be the group’s lead singer. Baker went back to Detroit and worked as a waitress and a receptionist for a law firm. In 1983 (@ 25yrs old), she released her debut solo album, 'The Songstress', under the Beverly Glen label. The album was a popular one and many of the songs made it to the music charts. Following the release of the album she had a protracted legal battle with the Beverly Glen label over payment of royalties and breach of contract issues. She won the case against the label in 1985, signed with Elektra Records label, and came out with her second album 'Rapture' in 1986. The album became a big hit, with over eight million copies sold worldwide and led to ‘The Rapture Tour’. 90. Open Comments: 91. Question: Parade Magazine 9/12/19 - Short hair, don’t care! So, Hall modeled her hair after the “Sweet Love” singer, who has been credited as one of the pioneers of the pixie haircut. – Do you like the pixie on women? 92. Movie Scene: She’s Gotta Have It 93. A 1986 American black-and-white comedy-drama film written, edited and directed by Spike Lee. Filmed on a small budget and Lee's first feature-length film, it earned positive reviews and launched Lee's career. The plot concerns a young woman (Johns) who is seeing three men, and the feelings this arrangement provokes. Nola idealizes the freedom to have multiple sex partners that men have typically enjoyed, saying “A woman can be a sexual being, doesn’t have to belong to a man, and perhaps shouldn’t even wish for such a thing.” Nola's voice has been described as the most revolutionary element in the film, a representation of the struggle African American women faced in society at the time. 94. Review: By Esi Edugyan, he Guardian 12/2017 - Perhaps the most daring aspect of ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ was not its portrayal of sexuality but simply its willingness to view black people just as people. The film never highlights their racial otherness, exploring instead the whole messy business of their experiences. The black experience – to the extent such a thing even exists – is not only slavery and racism and economic disparity and brutality and the endless ongoing struggle, though it is all these things certainly. It is also sex and love and boredom and dreaming and joy. 95. Question: Are promiscuous black women now acceptable? 96. TV Scene 97. The series was adapted from a play written in 1978 by Christine Houston about the lives of women in a predominantly black apartment building. The show was created as a starring vehicle for Marla Gibbs, who had become famous as Florence Johnston, the sassy maid on The Jeffersons, and had starred in Houston's play in Los Angeles. This role was similar in nature. 101. “227” followed the lives of Mary Jenkins (Marla Gibbs), a nosy, tart-tongued, but loving housewife. Her husband, Lester (Hal Williams), had his own construction company, and their daughter, Brenda (Regina King), was boy-crazy yet smart and studious, in her first television acting role. Also cast in 227 was Sandra Clark (Jackée Harry), Mary's young neighbor who constantly bickered back and forth with her about their respective views on life. Except for The Cosby Show and A Different World, “227” achieved higher ratings than other sitcoms airing at the time with a predominantly African American cast during the first two seasons. Awards: Winner of 1987 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Jackée Harry. 102. Open Comments: 103. Featured Character: Sandra's style was so great because it's the quintessential 1980's look of "grown and sexy". Sandra showed us Black women could be bold, fierce, fabulous, and fashionistas and rock any outfit with enough confidence to stop traffic. From interview with Lee Bailey’s Electronic Urban Report, “I was a diva, full and blown up. In fact, I was the ‘It’ girl. Oh yeah, I was that girl. I dressed well, had a lot of money. I don’t know how many cars. You know, it was the 80s, it was not a blur, but it flew so fast.” Fortunately, Harry had a great vehicle to shine in “227,” which struck a chord with its relatable characters. Harry’s hard work obviously paid off with Sandra, who became a certified hit with viewers. It’s a given that Harry put her stamp on the character, but she credits a couple of entertainment icons for helping to lay the groundwork for her and other women to be funny and sexy without missing a beat. Especially when it came to Sandra. “Just funny. Funny. And the clothes she wore, scandalous. Funny lines. Sexy, fancy. People wanted that and I didn’t know that, then,” Harry said about what made her beloved “227” character so endearing. “I grew up watching a lot of TV and I had seen women like that on TV… a lot of different women like Mae West and Lucille Ball. That was my vision of funny. Pretty, but still funny and you can get away with a lot more. Which is still true today.” 104. Open Comments: 105. Question: Ever met a real-life “Jackee”? 106. Donald Goines, the ‘Godfather of Urban Fiction.’ (36yrs old): Criminal, drug addict, Author. From 1969 -1974 he published 16 novels that helped establish the genre. 34. Urban fiction working definition: Works of art set in urban America dealing with drugs, violence, and sex, involving African 35. American or Latino characters. The genre is also known as Street Fiction, Gangsta Lit, Ghetto Lit, or Hip-Hop Fiction. 36. Goines was born in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were a middle-class African-American couple that ran a laundry business. At 15 Goines lied about his age to join the Air Force, where he fought in the Korean War. During his stint in the armed forces, Goines developed an addiction to heroin that continued after his discharge from the military in the mid-1950s. To support his addiction, Goines turned to crime, this included pimping, and theft. He began writing while serving a sentence in Michigan's Jackson Penitentiary. Goines initially attempted to write westerns but decided to write urban fiction after reading Iceberg Slim's autobiography Pimp: The Story of My Life. 37. Goines continued to write novels at an accelerated pace to support his drug addictions, sixteen books in five years, with some books taking only a month to complete. His series about Kenyatta (under the name Al C. Clark) describes a black revolutionary, who campaigns against exploitation and evils of inner-city life. On October 21, 1974, Goines and his common-law wife were discovered dead in their Detroit apartment. The police had received an anonymous phone call and responded, discovering Goines in the living room of the apartment and his common-law wife Shirley Sailor's body in the kitchen. 38. Goines books are still popular, especially in the prison system. His books have gone on to sell millions of copies and have never been out of print, making him one of the most successful African-American authors in history. 39. His books have been utilized in several prison literacy programs and his novel "Dopefiend" (1971) has been taught in a Rutgers University class. 40. Other popular titles: Whoreson (1972), Black Gangster (1972), Street Players (1973), White Man's Justice, Black Man's Grief (1973), and Black Girl Lost (1974) 41. ***Question: has anyone read his books? 42. Donald's work was deeply influenced by Iceberg Slim. 43. In 1961, after serving 10 months of solitary confinement in a Cook County jail, Robert Maupin (a.k.a. Slim) decided he was too old for a life of pimping and was unable to compete with younger, more ruthless pimps. In an interview with the Washington Post, he said he retired "because I was old. I did not want to be teased, tormented and brutalized by young whores." 44. In 1967, he published two books; A memoir, "Pimp: The Story of My Life" and the novel "Trick Baby" 45. ***Question: has anyone read his books? 46. Iceberg and Donald's work made a HUGE impact on the youth growing up in the 70's and 80's. 47. "Pimp" inspired the screenplay for the 1973 film "The Mack", starring Max Julien and Richard Pryor. 48. Various other entertainers were also influenced by Goines and Slim: Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Katt Williams, 49. Eddie Griffin, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Ludacris, Nas, and Jay-Z, just to name a few. 50. Iceberg and Donald also proved that a commercial "Black" book market did exist. 51. A new "post" Hip-Hop revival of contemporary urban fiction happened at the end of the 1990s, as demand for novels authentically conveying the urban experience increased, and new business models enabled fledgling writers to more easily bring a manuscript to market and to libraries. 52. One of the first writers in this new cycle of urban fiction was Omar Tyree, who published the novel Flyy Girl. 53. The genre gained significant momentum in 1999 with Sister Souljah's bestseller The Coldest Winter Ever. Teri Woods's True to the Game was also published in 1999.The publishing of these three novels created a momentum of readership for urban fiction and carried that wave for years. All three books are considered classics in the renaissance of the genre. 54. Major writers of contemporary urban fiction include Wahida Clark, Vickie Stringer, Nikki Turner, Kole Black, K'wan, Toy Styles, Kwame Teague, and the writing duo Meesha Mink & De'Nesha Diamond. 55. ***Question: has anyone read any of these books? 56. The reach of urban fiction into a large youth readership is undeniable today, particularly among adolescent girls. 57. Critics and supporters are pleased that Black youth are reading. But some have mixed feelings about promoting literacy by any means necessary. “To some extent, there is an exposure to a part of urban culture that has rarely been explored in a way that it is now…which can be a starting point for civic dialogues,” offers Tracey Michae’l Lewis, who teaches writing and literature at Community College of Philadelphia and Philadelphia University. “Unfortunately, we have to ask ourselves, ‘What is this costing us?’” 58. Scholars have differing opinions on Urban Fiction. Some believe that it is low reading, like a trashy book, that is not of high quality. Those who believe this think that prisoners and adolescent should be reading more elevated works. 59. Audio Clips 114. ***Question: Silver spoon or deserved? 115. ###Key Artist: Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor III (35yrs old): Actor, Comedian, Screenwriter (1940–2005) 116. Born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, he became one of the most influential comedians in the history of comedy. Few comics today will talk about their own careers without mentioning the inspiration they received from Pryor. A talented yet controversial man, most people either love him unconditionally or hate him passionately. 117. Early Life: For much of his youth, Pryor was left in his grandmother's care and lived in the brothel she ran. He also experienced sexual abuse as a child, according to his official website. To step away from the grim reality of his life, Pryor found solace in going to the movies. Expelled from school at age 14, Pryor ended up working a string of jobs until he joined the military in 1958. He served in the army for only two years, as he was discharged for fighting with another soldier. 118. Early Career: Returning home, he found work as a stand-up comic throughout the Midwest, playing African-American clubs in such cities as East St. Louis and Pittsburgh. In 1963, Pryor moved to New York City. The following year, he made his television debut on the variety show On Broadway Tonight. Guest appearances followed on such programs as The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. At the time, his act was modeled after two African-American comedians he admired, Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory. 119. In 1960, while playing in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel, he had a panic attack and walked off stage. He wanted to give voice to the winos, pimps, dealers, and other characters in his head. He retreated to Berkeley, California, where he met a variety of counterculture figures, including Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton. 120. Mainstream Success: In the early 1970s, Pryor scored several successes as an actor and comedian. He earned positive reviews for his supporting role in the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues (1972), starring Diana Ross. In 1973, he netted his first Emmy Award nomination (outstanding writing achievement in comedy, variety) for his work on The Lily Tomlin Show. The following year, Pryor took home his first Emmy (best writing in comedy, variety) for another collaboration with Lily Tomlin: the comedy special Lily (1973). Pryor also wrote for such shows as The Flip Wilson Show and Sanford and Son, which starred comedian Redd Foxx. Continuing to thrive professionally, Pryor co-starred with Max Julien in the film "The Mack" 91973) and worked with Mel Brooks on the screenplay for the western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974). His own work was also attracting a lot of attention. Despite its X-rated content, his third comedy albums sold extremely well and won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recordings in 1974, 1975, and 1976. 121. Fans of all racial backgrounds were captivated by Pryor's comedy, which consisted of situational and character-driven humor in place of straightforward jokes. He poked fun at the white establishment and explored the racial divide. By the late 1970s, Pryor had a thriving career as a stand-up comic and movie actor. 122. Audio Clips 123. Troubled Personal Life: Pryor had a long history of substance abuse and stormy relationships. He got into legal trouble in the early 1970s for failing to file tax returns. / In 1978, Pryor had another run-in with the law after he shot his estranged wife's car. / Pryor’s health began to suffer, and he endured his first heart attack in 1978 / In June 1980, after several days of freebasing cocaine, he lit himself on fire in a suicide attempt / 124. Later Years: In 1986, Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the central nervous system. By the early 1990s, the once-kinetic Pryor was confined to a wheelchair. The comedian wrote the autobiography Pryor Convictions: And Other Life Sentences with Todd Gold, earning critical acclaim upon its release in 1995. In 2001, Pryor remarried Jennifer Lee. He spent his final years with her at his California home. Outside of performing, Pryor was an advocate for animal rights and opposed animal testing. He established Pryor's Planet, a charity for animals. 125. Death and Legacy: On December 10, 2005, Pryor died of a heart attack at a Los Angeles area hospital. In addition to providing audiences with both hilarious and moving performances, he paved the way for African-American comedians like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock to make their mark. "Pryor started it all. He made the blueprint for the progressive thinking of black comedians, unlocking that irreverent style," comedian and filmmaker Keenen Ivory Wayans explained to The New York Times. 126. ***Question: Given his EXTEMELY troubled personal life, does he deserve praise, pity, or pilloried (ridiculed publicly)? 127. ###Vote for Key Artist: 128. ###The Movie Scene 129. Dolemite: Played by Rudy Ray Moore, who co-wrote the film. Moore had developed the alter-ego as a stand-up comedian and released several comedy albums using this persona. The film has attained cult status. Plot: Dolemite is a pimp and nightclub owner who is serving 20 years in prison after being set up by a rival, Willie Green. One day, his friend and fellow pimp Queen Bee helps him get out of jail, and plots with him to get revenge on Green. 130. Mahogany: A romantic drama directed by Berry Gordy and produced by Motown Productions. Mahogany stars Diana Ross as Tracy Chambers, a struggling fashion design student who rises to become a popular fashion designer in Rome. Fresh from the success of Lady Sings the Blues, this film served as Ross' follow-up feature film. 131. Let's Do It Again is an action crime comedy directed by and starring Sidney Poitier and co-starring Bill Cosby and Jimmie Walker. The film, directed by Poitier, is about blue-collar workers who decide to rig a boxing match to raise money for their fraternal lodge. The song of the same name by The Staple Singers was featured as the opening and ending theme of the movie, and as a result, the two have become commonly associated with each other. This was the second film pairing of Poitier and Cosby following Uptown Saturday Night, and followed by A Piece of the Action (1977). Of the three, Let's Do It Again has been the most successful both critically and commercially. [FYI...Calvin Lockhart was Biggie Smalls and Jimmie Walker as Bootney Farnsworth] 132. ###Key Movie: Cooley High: [My Favorite movie of all-time!] 133. Summary: "...But "Cooley High" was no exploitation film. Unlike the other black stories being told on screen in the early '70s, this one wasn't about crime, racism, drugs, vengeance, or black-power heroes and heroines who stuck it to the Man. It was just about teens doing what teens do -- hanging out, going to school, going to parties, hooking up, cruising the streets, and dreaming of the future. Yes, there was petty crime and some tragic violence, but they weren't the focus of the story. It was just a slice of life, both specific and universal. As a result, "Cooley High" marked the beginning of the shift in African-American cinema away from blaxploitation toward more diverse stories of black life, although it would take another 20 years for that transition to be fully realized." - 'Cooley High' Is the Most Influential Movie You've Never Seen, by Gary Susman, moviefone.com 134. Audio Clips 135. In film, coming of age is a genre of teen films. Coming-of-age films focus on the psychological and moral growth or transition of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Personal growth and change are an important characteristic of this genre, which relies on dialogue and emotional responses, rather than action. The main character is typically male, around mid-teen and the story is often told in the form of a flashback. 136. Films in this subgenre include Bambi (1942), Oliver! (1967), American Graffiti (1973), Breaking Away (1979), The Last American Virgin (1982), The Breakfast Club (1985), Stand by Me (1986), Almost Famous (2000), the Harry Potter series (2001–2011), and Moonlight (2016) 137. ***Question: The movie dealt with friendships, loyalty, betrayal, forgiveness, and regrets. Do you have any personal stories to tell that deal with these issues? 138. ###The TV Scene: The Jefferson’s 139. Sample review: Parents need to know that this classic '70s/'80s sitcom -- which follows an African-American couple who move to an upper-class Manhattan apartment in a primarily Caucasian neighborhood -- combines strong racial stereotypes with some positive representations of African Americans and interracial relationships. George Jefferson is stubborn, mean-spirited, and bigoted, and the show uses strong words like "damn" and racial epithets like "honky." The show is generally mild by today's standards, but George's inappropriate behavior and language may send iffy messages to younger viewers. 140. For many black Americans, the news of actor Sherman Hemsley’s death represents a two-fold loss of both an incredible talent and the captivating character that was George Jefferson. By portraying the outspoken and incredibly honest Mr. Jefferson, who was never too shy to speak candidly about race relations in the seventies, Hemsley and his cast mates had a major effect on American television through the hit sitcom “The Jefferson’s.” 141. As the longest-running series with a predominantly African American cast, the show was one of the first to portray a successful black family, paving the way for future sitcoms like “The Cosby Show” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” It was also the first series to prominently feature an interracial couple with the characters Helen and Tom Willis, using its makeup of colorful personalities to create humorous commentary about race in the United States at the time. 142. Making its debut in 1975, the show mimicked its parent series “All In The Family,” but instead focused on a black household. George Jefferson displayed his distrust of white people and shared his views on race in America with a fervor that rivaled Archie Bunker’s comical, yet stinging, opinions about minorities. The show explored issues rarely discussed on television, and the characters’ frequent use of racially charged terms like “nigger” and “honky” placed the series in a class all its own. Although George and his wife Louise “Weezy” Jefferson’s sudden success catapulted them into a predominantly white world, they represented the epitome of black culture. Even the show’s popular theme song was reminiscent of the gospel tunes often heard in black churches. 143. “The Jeffersons” use of confrontational humor and candid commentary that helped ease the discussion of topics like race and class on American television (and beyond) is the cornerstone of the show’s legacy. Its characters opened doors for future black actors, and its success proved that African American sitcoms did, in fact, resonate with general audiences. 144. ***Open Comments: 145. Legacy: We also recognized the familiar in George's willingness to put on airs if it meant seizing an advantage against a rival or gaining one from a potential patron, backing down only when it became clear that his honor or family's well-being was at risk. It was easy to mistake George's hustle as symptoms of a gratuitous and crass materialism, but, his endless striving, the relentless quest to impress the Wittendales of the world or to get into a posh tennis club, even though he had no clue or interest in the sport, was always about survival. Money, in George's mind, represented the best defense against discrimination. "Let me tell you something about people," George tells his old adversary Archie Bunker at a cocktail party. "That bartender's willing to work for me because if you got enough green in your pocket, then black becomes his favorite color." - What 'The Jeffersons' Taught Me About Being an American. SHERVIN MALEKZADEH AUG 7, 2012 146. "...And the previous, say, eight years or so were characterized by efforts to sort of break down institutional racism in America from the Civil Rights Act to desegregation in schools. And so, you had this whole level of black folks who were just being held back by institutional racism, and once those bonds started to break, they could build businesses. They could get great jobs, and they could move into the middle class and upper middle class in a way that they hadn't been able to do before. And "The Jeffersons" in its own way, even though it was also a very typical sitcom, very broad, it also talked about those elements. You know, George had to deal with his friends from the old neighborhood. They would come to visit and embarrass him because he was trying to impress the new wealthy people that he lived with in his new high-rise. And, you know, there was always that tension, and I think some black folks were going through that in their own lives. They could recognize a bit of that in what George Jefferson was doing. - Heard on All Things Considered, NPR 147. ***Question: Was the show too unrealistic/out of reach? 148. ***Vote: 1975 biggest legacy?

Work Relationships:Work Husband? Work Wife? Really?! Let's Talk! • Stop The Comparison! You're enough! • How Will I Know
The year is 1986. Fleetwood Mac had not released a new album in four years. And, with the radio favoring younger and more heavily pop hits like “How Will I Know” and “Papa Don’t Preach,” they were considered middle-aged and washed up, like most of their late-60s and ‘70s breezy, FM rock peers, barely a blip on anyone’s radar. The band members themselves were fractured. Stevie Nicks checked into rehab to deal with a cocaine addiction that, over the course of the past decade, had created a hole in her nose — by the end of the year, she would be in the early stages of a long addiction to Klonopin, the drug meant to keep her off the coke. Drummer Mick Fleetwood, who had declared bankruptcy two years earlier, was in the midst of an outrageously expensive cocaine addiction, while bassist John McVie was drinking heavily, and keyboardist Christine McVie was celebrating her new marriage. Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was holed up in his home studio, obsessively at work on his next solo album. The end result would not be Buckingham’s third solo album, but Fleetwood Mac’s fourteenth. A shimmering, painstakingly crafted labor of love produced by Buckingham over the course of 18 months, 1987’s Tango in the Night would become a sort of sister album to the impossible-to-top Rumours: a monolithic story of a band in the throes of self-destruction. Only this time, they weren’t all stubbornly persevering together; they were being held together, puppeted, even, by Buckingham as he coaxed an album from a band that, mostly, just wasn’t there. It would be the last studio album the famous quintet ever recorded. In this episode, we discuss the qualities each distinct songwriter brings to the collective group, how Buckingham’s experimental production style helped make Tango so reflective of its time, and why we will never tire of this crazy family and all of their drama.

I'm very excited to present my latest deep house podcast – Deep Spring House, Part 1. I think for most DJs, sticking to just one sound can get a bit boring. For me, deep house is what I listen to when I'm not in a club… when I need to think on long car rides… when I'm sitting around a friend's pool on a lazy weekend afternoon. Deep house has increasingly become my passion project and I've been working on this latest set for quite a while… in-between other gigs and projects. The BPM on this one varies from 120 – 124 in sections, but it never gets above. It's a full two hours long and I have a Part 2 almost ready to record that's equally as long – there's just too much great deep house out there not to share it! Please share this podcast on social media if you enjoy it. I'd love to be able to play this sound out live more in the future! The next artist I thought I'd tackle in the Essential's series is Whitney Houston. Her song book is huge as are her songs. There are countless remixes of her tracks to choose from. I've started with some of her earlier hits with remixes by Junior Vasquez, Hex Hector & Club 69 among others. There are 2 more editions following which will highlight her mid & later career. Enjoy Anthony 1/ "HOW WILL I KNOW" (Junior Vasquez Club Mix) 2/ "GREATEST LOVE OF ALL" (Club 69 Future Club Mix) 3/ "I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY" (Junior's Happy Handbag Club Mix) 4/ "LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY" (Junior Vasquez 2000 Club Mix) 5/ "I'M EVERY WOMAN" (Sam Pena Club Mix) 6/ "STEP BY STEP" (Steve Bourasa Club Mix) 7/ "SO EMOTIONAL" (David Morales Club Mix) 8/ "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" (Hex Hector Club Mix)
