Emmy-nominated composer Chanda Dancy joins us for an inspiring conversation about her remarkable journey in music and film scoring. Known for her work on the acclaimed miniseries "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," Dancy's impressive portfolio includes "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," "Devotion," and the documentary "Aftershock." In this captivating interview, Dancy delves into her creative process, discussing the meticulous research and preparation behind crafting the perfect orchestral language for "Lawmen: Bass Reeves." She also shares her profound sense of responsibility when composing for the Whitney Houston biopic. From her early days in Houston, where her classical musician mother introduced her to violin at preschool age, to her pivotal moment at Houston Baptist University where her passion for film scoring ignited, Dancy's story is one of perseverance and "divine timing." We explore how a short film she wrote, directed, and scored became her ticket to USC's prestigious film scoring program. The conversation is peppered with fascinating anecdotes, including a pivotal encounter with legendary composer Mike Post (known for "Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue") during her internship days. Dancy's journey wasn't without challenges - after USC, she found herself serving coffee and working at an internet company. But for this determined dreamer, these humble beginnings were just the prelude to an extraordinary career. Join us as we uncover the story of a talented artist who refused to give up, leading to a snowball of opportunities that shaped her into the acclaimed composer she is today. This episode is a must-listen for aspiring musicians, film enthusiasts, and anyone who believes in the power of perseverance. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/postinblack/support

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we're hanging out in a mystical London street full of Sontarans, Judoon and Cybermen, investigating a murder with Johnny Spandrell — only to find, to our horror, that the murder hasn't happened yet. And, of course, that it's time for Clara Oswald to Face the Raven. Notes and links Fridging or Women in Refrigerators is a trope in which a woman is murdered and the emotions of her male parent/lover/friend become more important to the narrative than the death of the woman herself. This article from The Guardian discusses its use in Strangers, an ITV drama in which our very own Devla Kirwan's death evokes trauma in her husband, our very own John Simm. You can find links to the videos shot by Rufus Hound during the shooting of The Woman Who Lived in the shownotes for Flight Through Entirety Episode 272: John Scott Martin in a Zarbi Suit. China Miéville's novel Kraken (2010) also depicts a London with secret hidden streets, these ones full of monsters and cultists. (It also features a villain called the Tattoo, who is literally a crazed sentient tattoo.) Rigsy's offscreen girlfriend Jen, who we hear on the phone but don't see, is played by Naomi Ackie, who goes on to star as Whitney Houston in the 2022 biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. And here's a story in Entertainment Weekly about the controversy surrounding Letitia Wright's weird tweet about the Covid vaccine. And if you're feeling down, you should cheer yourself up with this 2015 story from The Guardian about Jeremy Clarkson's cancellation. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Simon is @simonmoore72, and Johnny is @JohnnySpandrell. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll hack Google Maps and render your entire street completely fictional. And more On 27 November we'll be launching a Doctor Who flashcast called The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire. Like Jodie into Terror before it, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be released a day or two after each new episode of Doctor Who and will contain our ill-considered and half-baked initial reactions to the episode. Keep an eye out on the new podcast website or on our social media accounts for details. Our second newest podcast is Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast, whose first episode was released just a couple of weeks ago. In that episode, we talked over the show's pilot Breakaway, in which the moon is hurled from its orbit by a terrible nuclear explosion. We're hoping to release Episode 2 next weekend. Maximum Power is continuing its journey through Series C of Blakes 7. This week, the crew of the Liberator run into a strangely disappointing figure from Auron mythology in Dawn of the Gods. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, they watched perhaps the worst episode of the entire Star Trek franchise, the Star Trek: Voyager episode Threshold.

Screenwriter and producer Anthony McCarten is regarded as one of the most celebrated Kiwi storytellers.  Born and raised in New Plymouth, Anthony McCarten went on to write and produce several acclaimed biopics and became a four-time Academy Award nominee. He's worked on The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Two Popes and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Anthony McCarten says hit most recent novel, Going Zero was inspired by discussions that the collective reliance on electronic devices was working against everyone. "The sinister side of technology then worked its way into our conversation about disappearing, the ubiquitous surveillance world we all live in now, and we're accepting of it. But if we had to, would we disappear off the map, how would we manage? The book emerged from that." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Naomi Ackie, the British star of Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, talks to Anna Smith about preparing for her portrayal of the musical icon. Ackie has been longlisted for a BAFTA Film Award for Leading Actress for her extraordinary performance. She explains how important it was to her that the audience was being shown a side of Houston that perhaps they hadn't seen before, particularly with her same-sex relationship with her girl friend Robyn Crawford. They also discuss the importance of having a female director, Kasi Lemmons, at the helm with the involvement of Whitney Houston's long-time producer Clive Davis, who is played by Stanley Tucci. Anna is also joined by Vanja Kaludjercic, the director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, giving insight into the 2023 programme and what it is that makes this film festival special. Vanja and Anna talk diversity, inclusion and internationalism within film and film festivals, and Vanja also picks out a few of this year's highlights. She lost her right leg and arm as a result and spent two months in hospital before being discharged on December 1st. She is now learning how to walk again and is fundraising for a new bionic arm. Sarah joins Anita to share her extraordinary story of survival and recovery. British actor Naomi Ackie takes centre stage in the new biopic, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance which comes out on 23 December. We're getting into the swing of the Christmas party season now with many of us making up for lost time during the pandemic, glamming up with false eyelashes. According to a recent poll, eyelash extensions are one of the top beauty treatments requested by consumers - for example, there was a 795% increase on searches for Russian Lashes in 2019. But how can we best wear and care for false eyelashes? And what are the alternatives? To find out more Anita is speaks to the columnist Sali Hughes and Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Hawkes. Over the Christmas period, it is estimated that more than 950,000 disabled people across the UK will need paid in-home care. The narrative surrounding carer workers has often been one of self-sacrifice and pity for having to work over Christmas - but what is it like as the person who needs care to share your Christmas day with people who aren't your family? Lady-Marie Dawson-Malcom was a physical training instructor in the British army, a mother to a six-month-old daughter and was preparing to take part in her first London marathon, when she sustained a C5 complete spinal cord injury after a fall – meaning she requires 24/7 in home care.
