Never Did It: A podcast for folks who like movies but haven't seen them all yet. This week, we take a short trip back to 2016. Brad Garoon starts by recommending Train to Busan, Yeon Sang-ho's action horror zombie film. They praise the young Kim Su-an for her terrific performance at a young age and revel in how the film's setting amped up its tension. They also list their favorite zombie movies. Then it's time for Brad to apologize for not having seen Moonlight, as Jake assigns him the film. They talk about the amazing parallel performances by Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert as the lead character Chiron, and dig into why Jake may have forgotten Naomie Harris's turn as the voodoo queen Tia Dalma in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

If you're planning on watching Whitney Houston: I Want to Dance with Somebody because you want to celebrate the woman behind the icon, this isn't what you've been waiting for. Script writer Anthony McCarten (The Two Popes,  Bohemian Rhapsody) designed a narrative built on innuendo, interviews, videos, and b-reel footage to such a degree that its central character, Whitney Huston, is never more than a plot device in a highlight reel of her career. And director Kasi Lemmons (Self-Made: Inspired by the life of Madame C. J. Walker), who should know better than to be satisfied with caricatures of Black people, did little to steer the story much deeper than offering a parody of a life lived. This talented cast's been set adrift with no hope of ever fitting an extraordinary life in such a meandering, and sadly subpar, homage.  Director: Luca Guadagnino Writers: David Kajganich, Camille DeAngelis Starring: Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams, Clarke Peters Runtime: 146 (very long) minutes Synopsis:  A joyous, emotional, heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston, one of the greatest female R&B pop vocalists of all time, tracking her journey from obscurity to musical superstardom. In this episode, Wellington and Savon are joined by special guest Maurice Hendricks, a long-time friend of the show and special guest. They review Drake's latest album Certified Lover Boy and discuss the lengthy track-list along with how this project had a better song structure compared to Scorpion and why he's so effective on lyrically dense tracks. They also review Kanye West's 10th album Donda and the interesting mix of ideas along with why certain fanbases aren't still connecting with the newer version of Kanye plus how it compares to CLB. Finally, they review Summer Walker's 2019 debut Over It and discuss how she paid homage to older, more traditional R&B and it still containing elements of hip-hop. In the second half, they review Moonlight, the 2016 coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins. Starring Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland, Janelle Monae and Ashton Sanders. They dive into how this was a master class character study, it being a uniquely told film and Barry Jenkins bringing in three different actors to play the main character in a masterful way. Finally, they discuss how Mahershala Ali was able to win Best Supporting Actor and effectively convey and execute on the character of Juan.

Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 American biographical drama film about the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O'Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lil Rel Howery, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne, and Martin Sheen also star. The film is directed and produced by Shaka King, who wrote the screenplay with Will Berson, based on a story by the pair and Kenny and Keith Lucas. A Fred Hampton biopic had been in the works for several years, with both the Lucas brothers and Will Berson writing and shopping screenplays individually since 2014. Berson's version almost got made with F. Gary Gray directing, but, when that fell through, King was hired to direct. The cast joined in 2019, with the blessings of Hampton's family, with filming taking place that fall in Ohio. Judas and the Black Messiah premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 1, 2021, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 12, simultaneously in theaters and digitally on HBO Max. The film was lauded by critics, who praised King's direction, the performances (particularly Kaluuya's and Stanfield's), and its timely themes. The film earned six Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Stanfield, and won Best Supporting Actor for Kaluuya and Best Original Song ("Fight for You"). For his performance, Kaluuya also won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message
