It's that time of year when Walter Afanasieff takes over the charts. Walter is the writer and producer of “All I Want for Christmas Is You”—the biggest Christmas song of all time—and he also produced “My Heart Will Go On.” But that's just the tip of the iceberg. From writing and producing with Mariah Carey to working with Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Barbra Streisand, Walter has been behind some of the most unforgettable songs in music history. He co-wrote dozens of hits with Mariah Carey, including “Hero” and “One Sweet Day”—the record-breaking duet with Boyz II Men that held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks. And let's not forget “My Heart Will Go On”—yes, the Titanic theme with Celine Dion—which earned him a GRAMMY for Record of the Year. Walter also won the Producer of the Year GRAMMY in 2000.This year, he's nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media for his song "Love Will Survive" with Barbra Streisand from the miniseries The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Walter co-wrote the piece with Hans Zimmer, Charlie Midnight, and Kara Talve, and produced it alongside Peter Asher. In this episode, we dig into Walter's incredible journey through the music world. From his early days working with Narada Michael Walden (fun fact: Walter played synths on “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) to collaborating with some of the biggest voices in history, Walter is an absolute legend. He's also a dear friend, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you today. Let's go!

Wiz RECOMMENDS "Spencer" To be honest, I was conflicted after watching Spencer. On the one hand, the biopic is chock full of formulaic crap that highlights performances that are little more than good mimicry than anything that lets you see the heart and soul of the person it's about. For every brilliant movie like I'm Not There, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters and Malcolm X, there's a crap ton of mid to low tier films like Get On Up, Bohemian Rhapsody, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Back in Black. But Spencer gets my recommendation like Elvis did: it's a flawed film in some major ways, but the performance by the main actor is so nuanced and well performed that see it is worth the 2 hour investment. The typical way critics say a person is good as another person is to say "it's like I'm watching the real person on screen...but it's not!" Well, for the majority of the film, that's exactly what it felt like. Kristen Stewart gets the voice, mannerisms and feel of Diana Spencer so accurately that only when there are incredibly tight close-ups of Stewart's face does the illusion break. The wispy voice and the awkward, stilted way she speaks and moves is incredibly articulated. She also fits incredibly well with the costumes in the movie, fitting the frame and aura that Diana had. She also does an excellent job with the scenes involving mental health. Diana goes through a ringer in this film: she's not only dealing with bulimia, but there's also the suffocating nature of the Royal Family. And on top of that, she's processing the fact that her husband, Prince Charles (Jack Farthing), is having an affair behind her back. When she's dealing with these issues, the film takes an uncomfortably tense mood that represents the inner strife of her emotions and her duties as Princess of Wales. But the issues counteract a lot of these pluses: First off, the film is beautiful in some spots, but it feels entirely too indulgent with itself. The setting and area where the film is set is gorgeous in itself, so it feels kind of overboard when the film goes for sweeping wide shots and other shots that seem to not fit with the personal story. Finally, the film tries something different that most bio-pics don't really try. In Spencer, to illustrate the severity of Diana's mental turmoil, they show these scenes that are more metaphorical and symbolic. This includes scenes where Diana sees the ghost of Anne Boleyn. Though I appreciate a film that tries to do something different, these flourishes don't work at all for the film. First off, it doesn't really add much to the film other than saying "ohh that's fucked up!" when she's going through her issues. It just feels kind of cheap. What I don't understand is that you have an excellent performance by Stewart who can literally show all of the pain and suffering on her face. Why not just do that instead of this subplot that isn't really all that effective? As a story, Spencer feels like a miss: it's too indulgent with it's visuals and it tries to make depth in flashy metaphors that doesn't work the way it should. However, this is a recommend solely because of the performance by Kristen Stewart, which is amazing to see her morph into Diana so seamlessly. But I will be honest: if you aren't a fan of Stewart, it's best to avoid.

It's called “continuous growth” for a reason. When you cut down a tree, or a tree snaps and falls, the rings you'll see reveal more than the age of the tree based on how many rings there are. Each ring will be a different width, a different color or shade. Each of these rings tells a story about how changes in the environment impacted its growth and development as it grew from a sapling into a fully-fledged organism sprouting branches, growing leaves, bearing fruit, expanding its roots, or whatever other functions it performed during its life cycle.Jennifer Frye's story of surviving domestic abuse and finding her way to thrive by looking from the inside out makes me think of this metaphor.Growing up, Jennifer was instilled with the values of hard work, work ethic, honesty, integrity, family, education… and guilt. Yes, she grew up in the 1980s.Her father was a successful entrepreneur who worked a lot of hours and embodied the hustle culture. Though she grew up in a loving household, both her parents died when she was in her 20s. She was determined to be a success story and to do what she believed would be expected of her.Jennifer got married, had a child, and started a business, so it seemed like she was set to emulate her father and everything would be fine. But Fine is a 4-Letter Word. Her husband gradually became abusive. First it was emotional abuse, trauma, gaslighting, and displays of power like blocking her from leaving a room or laying behind her car so she could not leave the driveway. She tried to make it work for the sake of their child having a complete home. Then, after she went out with a friend for her birthday, he accused her of being with another man and struck her. That was the break. Though it was scary, and she didn't have a whole lot to go on as her business was just starting to really take off, she divorced him and embarked on a journey to making it on her own.Funny thing, though. She had already been managing the household and primary in raising their child, so on the surface level, aside from a struggle to make ends meet, things hadn't actually changed all that much. Until one day, she was emptying the dishwasher and found sheer joy at knowing she didn't have a man who would cause her anxiety if she didn't empty the dishwasher. In a moment, when you hear from Jennifer, you'll see how, like the rings of a tree, she discovered how as you go through the layers of bark, you find your tolerations that get in the way of gratitude and dispose of them. And most of all, you'll be energized by the power of the word “because”.Jennifer's hype song is "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston.Resources:Jennifer's website: https://appreciatedasset.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-levy-frye/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/appreciatedasset/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/appreciatedasset/ Also be sure to check out Episode #81, Resilience in the Face of Adversity: A Dad's Story of Overcoming Loss and Embracing Gratitude with Mike Fister – Mike connected me to Jennifer for today's enlightening...

If you don't know, now you know. James Alsop, a one-time contestant on Bravo's Step It Up And Dance, is now one of the entertainment industry's most sought-after choreographers doing some of the most interesting work. James began her career as co-choreographer of Beyoncé's videos, tour, and promotional materials for the multi-platinum selling records Who Run the World, Dance For You, and Love on Top. And we get into how she made her way into dancing with Beyonce, here. She also assisted in choreographing the huge hit  music video Booty by Jennifer Lopez. James has worked with Paul Thomas Anderson for the Haim music video Just A Little of Your Love, and after choreographing the entire season of Maya Rudolph and Martin Short's variety series Maya + Marty, she was asked by Tina Fey to choreograph season three of the Emmy nominated series The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. A truly incredible body of work, and there's more. She most recently choreographed the Peacock musical TV series Girls5Eva starring Story + Rain cover star Busy Phillips, and UnPrisoned, the Tracy McMillan series starring Kerry Washington.  Then there's Pose, the superbowl, the Dahmer series, Emily In Paris; the Gossip Girl reboot; and it was a dream come true when James worked on the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody. There are so many more projects to name. On the podcast we talk about that experience as well as her vision for The Devil Wears Prada musical, and being inspired by the ways people walk, for it. We discuss working through her feelings and her skillset to choreograph the upcoming A Transparent Musical, based on the Emmy award winning series from Amazon Prime. We talk living by the rule of rising to the occasion to be the best you can be, the time she surprised Beyonce, and the time she was at a party that changed her life, and that was shortly before Story + Rain's Editor in Chief and Founder, Tamara, met James. James loves to teach; we talk about her teaching style and philosophies, and her dancing style---"intricate, sexy, and groovy” is how she describes it. We talk all about sticking with the dream, and the opportunities that opened up after she decided to  “wake up and see who I really am every day”. Tired of hiding, James transitioned in 2015. From stories about mornings in the kitchen with her siblings singing and dancing with her mother blasting Luther Vandross, to when Tamara met and dressed James in LA on a Bravo ad campaign set and when she knew there was a superstar before her---you'll be inspired. Long before there was a TV singing competition  called "The Voice," there was Whitney Houston -- aka "The Voice." But there really was no competition. Houston's power and range was second to no one else of her generation. In fact, the term of "The Voice" was something of an insult; it suggested that she was given a gift of singing from above, that it had little to do with talent. But to those who heard "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" or "Greatest Love of All" Or "I Will  Always Love You" or any of the other chart-topping hits, it didn't matter where the voice came from. It was magical. Houston sadly died in 2012, but not before gifting us all with a gorgeous legacy.

Then it's on to the What's That Sound results show, and while Kristina did not get it right, she did correctly identify it as being used in Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", as did one of the guessers who identified it as the cowbell sound from a Roland 808. Then it's on to the (quick) hacks, where we alternated for once just to keep things interesting. Three-time Grammy nominee, Telly Award-winning producer, songwriter and composer Marvin “Toneworld” Hemmings Jr., is no stranger to Orlando. In fact, he grew up here. His love for music came at a very young age. His journey started with family. “I got my start in church,” Toneworld said on the set of Riff On This. “My grandmother and grandfather had a church and I grew up there. They would let me beat on the drums until it started sounding good.” He added that he then went on to play the piano and guitar. Eventually, he researched producing and found his niche. The Evans High School grad continued to pursue his passion for music experimenting with producing. Toneworld also started playing gigs with his good friend Philip Martin. “He (Martin) was like, ‘Let's make a record,'” Toneworld said. “I was all in. I was like, ‘Let's do it, but I don't have the gear.'” That's when his friend suggested they go buy it. In fact, Toneworld said Philip bought the computer and the gear in exchange for payment to make the record. The duo found out quickly the process wasn't easy. “I was literally doing everything wrong, but it taught me. That was my school.,” Toneworld said. “I had to troubleshoot everything I had done wrong and I learned a lot along the way”. After the album was complete, Martin was L.A.-bound, determined to play the music they had created to record executives. “He called me and was like, ‘Bro, we got the deal!' And I was like, ‘What?'” Toneworld said. “My first record got a deal, they were a start-up label, but they were connected to Sony or something like that.” He was only 18 years old at the time. “It was one of those things where we were just like, ‘Let's try it' and it turned into something,” Toneworld said. Toneworld and Martin have done ten records together over the years. Now, the multi-platinum record producer has had the privilege of working with a variety of artists like Justin Bieber, Kirk Franklin, Jessie J, William McDowell and Brandy among others. Toneworld even produced seasons three and four of the TV series Empire and also worked on the show STAR. In 2021, Toneworld produced the hit “There She Go” for Justin Bieber's multi-platinum record, Justice Triple Chucks Deluxe, which received eight Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Elle and Chris take a deep dive into I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022), a biopic about Whitney Houston's own dive from the highest heights of vocal talent to drug-induced drowning in a bathtub. Alternate heartbreakingly insensitive episode titles that we couldn't bring ourselves to use: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Crack), Saving All My Crack For You, Greatest Crack of All, I Will Always Love Crack, I'm Your Crack Baby Tonight, and I Go To The Rock (an actual Whitney song title). When trouble strikes in music town, there's one guy who gets the call. That's me, Joe Treble, forensic musicologist. This week, I've got one of the most shocking cases I've ever worked. Someone killed the key change in pop music, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to find the perpetrator. The key change used to be at large on the Billboard charts. From the 1950s to the 1990s, 20-30% of all number one hits featured one. In Whitney Houston's “I Wanna Dance With Somebody," the key change hits right before the final chorus. The song's harmonic center shifts up, raising the pitch of the song, challenging the vocalist to hit higher and higher notes, juicing the big finish with excitement and pep. But starting in the 1990s the key change virtually disappeared from the Hot 100. Now, hit songs start and end in the same key, and no one seems to have even noticed. Except for me. This investigation will bring me face to face with a rogue's gallery of suspects and sources: Chris Dalla Riva, music and data specialist; Brandon McFarland, alias 1-O.A.K., producer; Emily King, singer and songwriter. Each interrogation brings me closer revealing the murdered, but I be able to handle the terrible truth? Tune in as I tackle the hardest case of my career: the case of the missing key change! What the Riff?!?
1988 - June: The Coolies “Doug”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2023 36:01

We're going extra-deep this week with alternative rock group The Coolies.  The name comes from a derogatory term for 19th century Chinese immigrants who had to work hard for little pay.  The Atlanta based group was only around for about three years and produced two albums.  The first called "dig..?" was largely a collection of Simon and Garfunkel covers.  Their second album, Doug, is a rock opera with an odd premise.Doug follows the rise and fall of a skinhead named Doug.  He kills a transvestite who happens to be a cook, and becomes rich by using the stolen recipe book.  The money is spent in riotous living, and in the end Doug ends up right where he began. The Coolies vocalist and front man was Clay Harper.  Other band members included Jeb Baldwin, Rob Gal, Teddy Murray, and for this album had Frogg Jaguar Mellonball (most interesting artist name) on percussion.  He replaced Billy Burton, who was percussionist for the first album but was unavailable for “Doug” due to his commitments to The Swimming Pool Q's, another locally well known alternative band.Harper would go on to be the owner of Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina restaurants in Atlanta.  It is not believed that the events from the Rock Opera are in any way connected to Harper's future culinary success.Wayne takes us on this deep cut journey to explore one of his favorite albums. Ice Cold SoulThe lead track introduces Doug, the main character of the rock opera.  He is a skin head with the Pledge of Allegiance tattooed on the side of his head.  He hangs out with his fellow skin heads stealing from people, beating them up, and generally being intimidating.  “Schlitz Malt Liquor is my favorite food and pissed off is my favorite mood.”Pussy CookThe transvestite cook is warned not to walk where the “skin heads chill,” but failed to heed the warning.  After beating up and killing the cook, Doug and his gang “open up the purse to get a good look.  Got the money and the dope and the recipe book.”   There are a lot of similarities between this song and “Cooky Puss” by the Beastie Boys, which this song spoofs.40 Foot StretchThis track continues the tale with Doug living large in the back of a stretch limousine.  We're beginning to question whether that recipe book was referencing food...or something else!  This song has a sound reminiscent of Miami Vice.Crack Pipe BurningIt is becoming obvious that things are not going to end happily ever after with Doug.  The reference at the end of the song to “I got blisters on my fingers” hearkens back to a statement Ringo Starr makes at the end of the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.”    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do You Love Me by the Contours (from the motion picture “Dirty Dancing”)This 1962 single made a resurgence after appearing in 1987's “Dirty Dancing” film, and was on the charts in the summer of 1988. STAFF PICKS:Rough Night in Jericho by Dreams So RealBruce stays with the local flavor with his staff pick featuring a trio from Athens, Georgia.  The lead-off and title track from the band's second album hit number 28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts.  The band produced three albums in total, with this song being their most successful single.  Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl Rob brings us a more pop song than he normally features.  Keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill met singer Shannon Rubicam at a wedding where they were hired to perform, and later got married themselves, making it a “boy meets girl” story.  In addition to this song which made it to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo also wrote songs for other performers including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil Lynch's staff pick is a protest song from Australia's Midnight Oil.  It criticizes the Australian government for its treatment of Aboriginal communities in forcing them off their lands.  Midnight Oil performed this song at the Sydney Olympics, and wore jackets that said, “sorry” after the Australian government would not apologize for the treatment of Aboriginal people. This Note's for You by Neil Young & The Bluenotes Wayne features another protest song, this time from Neil Young.  At the time many rock bands and artists were being recruited to appear in commercials for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, and other consumer goods and drinks.  MTV controversially banned the video for a period of time due to concerns from advertisers, proving Young's point. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:End Title (from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?") by Alan SilvestriThis live action/animation combination was a hit on the big screens in June of 1988.

There is nothing more ugly than Fake Love. Yes, you read that right—Fake LOVE. I know we've been talking a lot lately about Fake Happy, which is hiding how you really feel behind a smile. I came across this anonymous quote the other day which ties Fake Happy and Fake Love together. “Don't fall for a fake smile because you don't know what they are hiding behind their fake smile.” The thing is, Fake Happy is about me. My responses. My choices. My actions. Will I choose to be truly Happy or just put on a Fake Happy front? Fake Love on the other hand is about others and how they decide to treat me. The reason Fake Love is so dangerous is that it involves manipulation and many other ugly things hiding behind the heart and hiding behind love. If we can't spot whether that person is fake loving or truly loving us, we are headed into a world of trouble, all in the name of love. The songs we use in this episode are "Fake Love" by Drake and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston. We don't own the rights to either.Contact usLinktree: www.Linktr.ee/HappyLifeStudiosEmail: Podcast@HappyLife.StudioYo Stevo Hotline: (425) 200-HAYS (4297)Webpage: www.HappyLife.lol YouTube: www.YouTube.com/StevoHaysTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@happylifestudiosFacebook: www.Facebook.com/HappyLifeStudios Instagram: www.Instagram.com/HappyLife_Studios Twitter: www.Twitter.com/HappyLifStudios If you would like to help us spread the HappyPayPal: www.PayPal.me/StevoHaysCash App: $HappyLifeStudiosZelle: StevoHays@gmail.comVenmo: @StevoHaysCheck: Payable to Hays Ministries or Steve Hays and send to PO Box 102 Maple Valley, WA 98038
