Why is star formation the workhorse of the universe? What is a flocculent galaxy? Which cosmic cataclysm creates new globular star clusters? And why are we currently seeing such amazing aurora in unusual places? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astronomer Dr. Kelsey Johnson, past president of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), and author of “Into the Unknown – The Quest to Understand the Mysteries of the Cosmos.” As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the auroras that have been occurring during the peak of the current solar max period of the roughly 11-year-long solar cycle. From the Mother's Day aurora borealis in May to the amazing night of October 10, when millions of people as far south as Florida and Mexico were treated to one of the most spectacular, vibrant light shows many of them had ever seen. Kelsey shares the story of the first time she saw an aurora, as a high school student in Minnesota who didn't even know what one was. Upon leaving her boyfriend's house at around 2 in the morning, she saw a brilliantly glowing sky. Kelsey's availability bias kicked in, and her assumption was that it had to be either god or aliens, with the latter being the more likely. Needless to say, the next day the front page of the local paper solved the mystery. And then it's on to a nerdy discussion of existential curiosity, deep, philosophical questions, and her book, “Into the Unknown.” You'll hear what drove Kelsey to write the book, and about her lifelong drive to understand our place in the universe. Kelsey and Allen nerd out over Calabi-Yau manifolds (concepts from string theory), imaginary numbers and complex numbers, Euler's Formula and more, and then, thankfully, it's time for our first question. Johnny asks, “What is a flocculent galaxy, and why are they interesting?” Kelsey says that they're spiral galaxies with spiral arms that aren't very pronounced, that are exceptionally “floofy and chaotic” with very different, but very cool star formation. Chuck and Kelsey explain why star formation is the workhorse of the universe and how important it is. Kelsey also explains why globular clusters are her “favorite” type of star cluster. There are about 150 of them living around our galaxy, and they're almost as old as the universe itself, over 10 billion years old. Kesley studies them to learn how the universe was formed and how galaxies came together. New globular clusters are rare, but they can be created by the collision of two galaxies. That's all we could squeeze into Part 1, but come back in two weeks for Part 2 of "Into the Unknown with Dr. Kelsey Johnson." In just a few weeks, Americans will vote to decide who will become the next President. With all the commercials and political coverage dominating our screens, it's easy to get caught up in the media circus during the election season. It's also difficult to determine how much elections should weigh on your mind, as well as your investing strategies and retirement plans. In today's episode, SHP Financial's Matthew Peck and David Hathaway discuss how our elections impact the economy and your investing mindset. We've been hearing about market volatility, inflation, and a potential recession for some time now, but is it all doom and gloom? In this conversation, we dive into why we let elections influence our investing decisions, the roles that our elected officials have in shaping our economy, and what to pay attention to and what to ignore in the weeks ahead before the next President is elected. In this podcast interview, you'll learn: How much impact presidents (and presidential elections) have on our economy–and why it's actually less than you think. Why Congressional and local elections are equally or maybe even more important than who is elected as President.  The downside of letting elections influence your investing mindset and overall outlook on the economy. Sudden Death Records and Roots Round Up are pleased to announce the release of "Up Rooted," the 6th full-length album from one of Vancouver's long-time music scene veterans. The album was recorded by Stephen Hamm at Simian Studios in Burnaby, BC, with final mixing and mastering by renowned Canadian music producer Chris Wardman. "Up Rooted" features 12 tracks, including six new original songs, a cover of DOA's classic "War in the East," a unique take on the Sarcastic Mannequins' "Red Fury," and four live recordings from a performance on Denman Island, BC, in June 2023. According to member David Hathaway, “Roots Round Up has always been more about the live shows than the recorded output, but capturing that in a recording has proved elusive. The live songs were captured at our first full show after the pandemic had settled down, and we were more than a little excited to be playing again. Especially on Denman Island where we have played many times over the years. We had gotten an audio feed from Chris Wardman's mix of the show and as we listened back the next day, we thought "wait a minute… this came out well!" In addition to finally capturing their live sound, the album also captures Roots Round Up's distinctive and eclectic sound, blending rock'n roll, reggae, ska, afro-beat, folk, funk, and punk. Roots Round Up has a storied history in the Canadian music scene, with band members Greg Hathaway, David "Dymitri" Hanna, David Hathaway, Keith Rose, Mark Campbell, Eric Napier, and Bradford Lambert contributing to their high-energy, globe-spanning sound. Formed in 1985 in East Vancouver, the band became widely known throughout Canada during the late '80s and early '90s as one of the hardest working and touring worldbeat dance bands. Formed out of the hardcore punk scene in Vancouver in 1985 but included elements of reggae, ska, and old school rock'n roll in their sound. Original drummer Barry Taylor (1985 - 2021) was a member of first generation punk band the Young Canadians / K-Tels and then Shanghai Dog.  Greg and Bradford were both drummers in second generation punk bands the Unknown Fibres and House of Commons, who both played shows with Shanghai Dog. Their extensive touring across Canada and the Western U.S., coupled with numerous independent recordings like "Get Rooted," "What We Do," and "Syzygy," cemented their place in the music scene. GB2RS News Sunday the 17th of September 2023 The news headlines: RSGB Strategic Priorities RSGB 2023 Convention YOTA month The RSGB Board has chosen four strategic priorities for the Society to focus on until the 2024 AGM. These are the growth of amateur radio; membership of the RSGB; spectrum and licensing; and ensuring the continued financial stability of the Society. These priorities will set the framework for the RSGB's activities over the coming months. Both HQ staff and volunteers across the range of RSGB teams will be involved in planning how best to implement these four priorities. Look out for further details in the coming weeks. The RSGB 2023 Convention has a great speaker programme and there are also some fantastic forums to take part in. The RSGB HF and VHF Forums will take place on Sunday, and on Saturday in conjunction with ICQPodcast, the RSGB is offering Convention attendees the chance to discuss two important topics. The first will challenge you to consider and take responsibility for the issues within amateur radio today – for example, is amateur radio just about what you like? Should someone else fix the issues you see? The second forum will focus on QRM and how both newcomers and experienced radio amateurs can sometimes feel frustrated or discouraged by on-air activities. In both forums you can discuss personal experiences, share ideas, and help to promote positive interactions with fellow radio amateurs. You will leave with a notepad full of ideas. The only way to participate in these forums is to be at the Convention, so do book your package or tickets now! Full information about the updated programme, speakers, the drop-in buildathon and the social scene are on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/convention December is Youngsters on the Air, or YOTA, month and is an exciting opportunity for you, your club, school, or social group to host an amateur radio station with the aim of getting youngsters active on the amateur bands. Once approval from Ofcom is received, the RSGB will provide access to the special callsign GB23YOTA and a full list of operating slots will be made available on QRZ.com. These slots will be first-come, first-served, so check your calendars and reserve your place as soon as possible. If you'd like to register your interest for YOTA month, or simply ask for further information, you can email Jamie, M0SDV at yota.month@rsgb.org.uk The RSGB Learning Team is calling out for your help – it is looking for volunteers to get involved in the development, implementation and relaunching of the new Discovery Challenge, which is a revamp of the Individual Scheme from the Beyond Exams initiative. The team is proposing to split the activities into three levels – Explorer, Adventurer and Master. If you'd like to help out with these exciting changes, or would just like to share some ideas or feedback, you can contact Mark Burrows, 2E0SBM the Beyond Exams Coordinator at be.coordinator@rsgb.org.uk The UK Six Metre Group's 2023 AGM will be held via Zoom on Sunday the 8th of October from 6pm BST. Also on Sunday the 24th of September, the Practical Wireless 70MHz Contest runs from 1200 to 1600UTC. Using all modes on the 4m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 14th of September 2023 While our terrestrial weather this week was variable, it seems our space weather was equally unsettled! We warned last week that it wouldn't take much to cause the Kp index to rise and on Tuesday a coronal mass ejection, or CME, hit the Earth sending the Kp index to 5.67. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field tipped sharply south for a long duration causing visible aurora to be seen across the north of the UK and as far south as Cornwall. This really hit HF quite hard and good signals were scarce. Unsettled radio conditions continued into Wednesday bringing the Maximum Usable Frequency, or MUF, over a 3,000km path down below 18MHz for most of the day. The Kp index was still around 3 or 4 on Thursday, but MUFs were recovering and were at around 28MHz over 3,000km by lunchtime. Next week NOAA predicts that the Solar Flux Index will start the week around 165 and then decline as the week progresses, perhaps ending at around 145 to 150. Geomagnetic conditions are forecast to be quiet, at least until the 23rd when the Kp could rise to four. But at this point in the solar cycle the risk of a solar flare, and subsequent CME, remains high every day, so watch solarham.net for up-to-date information. And finally, a new paper by NASA's Lisa Upton and David Hathaway indicates that sunspot maximum is now forecast to be in the Autumn of 2024. They predict a maximum sunspot number of 135, plus or minus 10, which is slightly larger than Cycle 24's maximum of 116.4, but well below the average of 179 for Solar Cycles 1 to 23. And now the VHF and up propagation news Tropo conditions are still present over southern areas today, the 17th. However, by early next week, low pressure will be a dominant force and the coming week looks very unsettled with rain and quite strong winds at times. This means that any Tropo, either across the southern North Sea or down across Biscay, will not last beyond this weekend, ending today the 17th. The unsettled low-pressure-driven weather will mean that rain scatter is a distinct possibility on some of the more active days. The other propagation modes are the usual fall-backs of meteor scatter using random meteors and aurora, which may not be too far-fetched in view of the geomagnetic activity and visible auroras experienced recently. The September Epsilon Perseids meteor shower has already peaked earlier in the month, but a few lingering meteors may give some truly random radio reflections. Last week there were indications that this normally quiet period after the August Perseids and the forthcoming October Draconids can still provide some interest for persistent meteor scatter enthusiasts. During this coming equinox week, the Moon will reach its lowest declination of the month on the 22nd and 23rd. This point also coincides with the Moon being in Sagittarius, so that sky noise will be very high. This will make moon bounce operations particularly difficult towards the end of the week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

This is the second part of The Border Chronicle's conversation with Sheriff David Hathaway of Santa Cruz County, located on the Arizona-Mexico border. Hathaway talks about “fuzzy” border statistics, which can be used to convey anything a person wants, and his battle to take down a U.S. Customs and Border Protection “spy blimp” over the city of Nogales. He also gets into his opposition to former Arizona governor Doug Ducey's 10-mile shipping container wall along the border, as well as his support for the protesters who stopped what he calls an “ugly eyesore” of a wall. You can listen to the first part of our conversation here, where Hathaway talks about his years as a DEA agent and how he assisted in the murder investigation of fellow agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, only to discover that the CIA was involved in Camarena's death. Sheriff David Hathaway is a fifth-generation rancher from the U.S.-Mexico border in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. He's also a former supervisory agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and he participated in the DEA's largest-ever homicide investigation, Operación Leyenda, to track down the killers of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in the 1980s. Hathaway's participation in Camarena's murder investigation, and his discovery that the CIA was not only smuggling drugs but also involved in Camarena's death in Mexico, led Hathaway to conclude that America's war on drugs is a failure, which spurs government corruption on both sides of the border as illustrated (yet again) in the current trial of former Mexican anti-drug official Genaro Garcia Luna in New York. Hathaway speaks frankly about U.S. drug policy, the investigation into Camarena's death (which is now featured in a four-part documentary called The Last Narc on Amazon), and the restorative justice programs* that Santa Cruz County has spearheaded to reduce drug demand in its communities. *Constructing Circles of Peace, Hope Incorporated, Wellness Connections, and Mariposa Community Health Center. The second part of this podcast with Hathaway which delves into border militarization, the recent shipping container wall boondoggle, and “fuzzy” border statistics will air next week. Stay tuned! Scott interviews David Hathaway, the libertarian sheriff of Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Hathaway recently made news by calling attention to the video surveillance blimps that the border patrol is flying about a half mile north of the border with Mexico. Hathaway criticizes these blimps as infringements on the privacy of the people living in his county, who now have federal government cameras floating above their houses. They then talk about the immigration debate more broadly, and Hathaway makes the case for why right-leaning libertarians and conservatives should oppose a more militarized border. Next they discuss the failed war on drugs and the CIA's relationship with the drug cartels. Hathaway brings in some insights from his experience working for the DEA to discuss the war on drugs and later the OKC bombing. The interview wraps up with a discussion of what it's like being a voluntarist working as a county sheriff.   Discussed on the show: Nogales Eye in the Sky Compromised: Clinton, Bush and the CIA by Terry Reed American Made (IMDb) The Last Narc (IMDb) “Once Upon a Time” (LewRockwell.com) OKC Bombing Archive (Libertarian Institute) David Hathaway is a rancher and homeschooling father of nine children. The idea of unity sounds great, right up to the point where someone is tempted to make it mandatory. Then it becomes a basis for tyranny. Gary Galles says, forget unity: we need the freedom to disagree. As long as we're exploring the topic of unity, let's take a closer look at how it can be co-opted and used against us. Paul Rosenberg explains why united we fall. The days in which America was a truly exceptional nation have passed. That doesn't mean we have to hang our heads in shame. It means that we need more "rascals"--people who make a difference by becoming exceptional individuals. What's happening in Europe right now regarding their energy woes is a clear warning for us here in America. Brandon Smith has an excellent essay on how the energy disaster that Europe is facing will spill over into the U.S. When Jeffrey A. Tucker points out that the world is on fire, you might want to listen. This is a solid assessment of what's happening. What good could a voluntarist sheriff do? David Hathaway recounts his first year as a voluntarist sheriff and his insights are encouraging. David Hathaway's ministry in Ukraine continues to provide humanitarian and spiritual relief to the displaced, and those who have lived under Russian occupation. Daily we distribute bread, water, sanitary items, medicines and other basic supplies. In addition, our staff provide spiritual and emotional support to people broken-down by war and destruction. Weekly we broadcast the Gospel in both the Ukrainian and Russian languages. And we distribute Bibles.   Even though the Russians have now left the Kyiv region, they left behind many exposed bombs, mines and grenades. But despite these dangers, we will not stop helping those in need.   Will you join us in supporting Ukraine? Many have already given generously,  and we are immensely grateful. But the need is great. And the longer the invasion continues, the worse the humanitarian crisis becomes. There is so much damage to infrastructure, but an even greater damage to people's souls.   To support our work in Ukraine visit: eurovision.org.uk/donation

David Hathaway is the sheriff in a county of Arizona that borders Mexico. He does not believe the government is the way to solve our problems, but he's in office for now so no tyrannical person will be. He's doing what he can to protect everyone in his large family as well as his ranch and personal freedom. He has refused his governor's offer of troops to patrol his portion of the border. He works to show everyone in and near his county God's love. His consistent experience with the church and other freedom-lovers spewing wild hate when it comes to the wall led him to write a book on immigration and several articles for Lew Rockwell and the Libertarian Institute. Jesus instructed us to love our neighbor and our enemy. So regardless of how you view them, it makes no sense to attack people for crossing a man-made line in the sand. But a lot of Christians and anarchists who stand on principle for many other issues completely change their tune when it comes to the wall and Mexico. Many of us are hoping to someday be a part of a voluntary society. We often ask: would a sheriff be a part of that? David shares his thoughts. Also, we all know the mainstream media hides the truth from us. But they are pretending so hard that COVID is terrible, they're completely ignoring the fact that suicide and overdoses killed more people during the lockdown than this “epidemic” did directly. This is tragic and affects so many families, but people hide in the shadows, not realizing they are, unfortunately, the norm.   For Full Show Notes: https://www.thebadroman.com/show-notes/episode-53   Blog submissions: thebadroman.com/contribute-to-the-blog   Connect with us on social: thebadroman.com/social-links   Want to get more involved?
