This week's guest is David Tyson. David served in the U. S. Army first as an enlisted artilleryman and later as an intelligence officer. During his time in the Army, he discovered he had an affinity for learning languages, and after leaving the service, he began working towards a graduate degree, focusing his studies on Central Asia. He was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1996, and five years later, was one of the first Americans to enter Afghanistan in November 2001. David and the other members of his team worked side by side with members of the Northern Alliance as they fought their way through the country, culminating in the retaking of Kabul and a decisive battlefield victory over the Taliban within just a few weeks. Along the way, the team found themselves in serious danger, including the terrible and costly fight during the Kali Jangi prison uprising, which cost the life of Johnny Michael Spann, America's first casualty in Afghanistan.Connect with Spycraft 101:Get Justin's latest book, Murder, Intrigue, and Conspiracy: Stories from the Cold War and Beyond, here.spycraft101.comIG: @spycraft101Shop: shop.spycraft101.comPatreon: Spycraft 101Find Justin's first book, Spyshots: Volume One, here.Check out Justin's second book, Covert Arms, here.Download the free eBook, The Clandestine Operative's Sidearm of Choice, here.Support the show
A state lawmaker from Columbia says Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Missouri and Anthem have backed away from their plan involving anesthesia coverage during surgeries. State Rep. David Tyson Smith (D-Columbia) tweeted Thursday that Blue Cross/Blue Shield had announced a new policy in Missouri to not cover anesthesia care if surgery goes beyond a certain arbitrary time. He described that proposal as “dangerous, egregious and appalling.” Representative Tyson Smith tweeted later Thursday that after he announced he would file legislation to prevent Anthem from limiting their anesthesia coverage during surgery, Anthem backtracked from that policy. Rep. Tyson Smith joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners this is a victory for constituents across the state. He also says residents across Missouri from both parties were outraged by the insurance company's plan. During the live interview, Representative Tyson Smith also outlined his bill to prohibit the purchasing of semi-automatic and fully automatic firearms by anyone under the age of 20. He's concerned about mass shootings at schools and AR-15 weapons. Rep. Tyson Smith tells listeners that he supports the Second Amendment and that teens should be able to hunt and to have guns. Representative Tyson Smith also discussed his proposal (House Bill 298) that would repeal the provisions authorizing the establishment of charter schools in Boone County:

David Tyson retired from the CIA's Directorate of Operations in 2020 after a 25-year career. The majority of his service was overseas; most of his postings and deployments were in Central Asia, the Caucasus region, and South Asia. During that deployment, David and the team worked closely with U.S. Special Forces (ODA 595) along with Afghan allies. David began his intelligence career as a linguist and interpreter, achieving fluency in Russian, Uzbek, Turkmen, Turkish, and Farsi/Dari. He is a recipient of the CIA's Distinguished Intelligence Cross, the Agency's highest award for valor, and the Agency's Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal. Prior to working for the Agency, David served in the U.S. Army, both enlisted and as an officer. Episode #50! David returns, but maybe we wish he hadn't. This story forever mars our unblemished view of the former shepherd boy, as David shows he will not stop at anything—including intrigue, sexual assault, and murder—to get what he wants. Through a ruthless series of events, David destroys hearts and lives in his maddened pursuit for pleasure. We examine the concept of heroes and how to face ourselves when we find that the people we look up to aren't the people we thought they were. On this week's podcast, Steve Balestrieri interviews Toby Harnden who served in the Royal Navy and retired as a Lieutenant. Though he served in the Navy for almost a decade, Steve is famously known as a journalist and author of 3 books including Bandit Country: The IRA & South Armagh and Dead Men Risen: The Welsh Guards and the Defining Story of Britain's War in Afghanistan. Toby talks about how he entered into journalism which seemed like a natural progression from his time in the Navy. While serving, he got to witness the action in Ireland with the IRA. These events led up to his first book which unraveled the murders of senior RUC officers with Garda (Irish police) collusion in 1989. His next book Dead Men Risen reached number 4 on The Sunday Times bestseller list and earned him the Orwell Prize for books in 2012. Toby details in today's show the background of this book that started with the events of 9/11 and the heroic men he interviewed to create the story. In Toby's latest book First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA's Secret Mission to Avenge 9/11, he looks back on the 8 men of Team Alpha who led the charge behind enemy lines on October 17, 2001, especially the heroism of David Tyson and martyrdom of Mike Spann. Toby discusses gritty details that set the stage for the tragedy in the Fort of War and the great cooperation between CIA, Green Berets, SPS, Navy SEALs which, during the early stages of the war, were unheard of. Toby also shares radical details about the operation taken from firsthand sources, including a hilarious account of psychological warfare where a lady Navy pilot's singing was used to intimidate the notoriously misogynistic Taliban, an on-the-fly idea of their bloodthirsty warlord companion. Damn Yankees is the debut album from the supergroup of the same name. Damn Yankees features Tommy Shaw of Styx on guitars and vocals, Jack Blades from Night Ranger is on bass and vocals, Ted Nugent is on guitars and vocals, and Michael Cartellone is on percussion and vocals. Cartellone was a relative unknown musician at the time, but he is now playing drums for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. A&R's John Kalodner is credited with getting the band together. At the time Shaw was in and out of Styx, Blades was available after Night Ranger dissolved, and Nugent was in a lull in his solo work. Nugent and Shaw were the first brought together, and this might seem like an unusual pairing given their previous work. However the two bonded very quickly over their appreciation for R&B, soul, and Motown music. Blades and Shaw took the lion's share of lead vocal duties on this album, and the pair complemented each other. Both had extensive experience harmonizing with others in their previous bands, and this carried over to Damn Yankees.Their debut album would be successful, led by the rock ballad "High Enough" which would hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. A second album would be released in 1992 which would be less successful than the first. After this second album Nugent would concentrate on his solo work. Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades would produce a couple of albums under the name Shaw Blades, but would soon return to their respective groups (Shaw to Styx, Blades to Night Ranger). Guest contributor John Lynch joins us for this podcast. Damn YankeesThis is the title song off the album, and a deeper cut. You get a lot of Ted Nugent's guitar work on this one. All songs were a collaborative effort, with Blades, Shaw, and Nugent receiving writing credits. Coming of AgeAccording to Songfacts, Tommy Shaw began plunking out the opening riff on piano when the group was working at Jack Blades House. Blades came up with the opening lines of lyrics, and the group moved to guitars to jam out the rest organically. Blades takes lead vocal duties here, with Shaw providing high harmonies.RunawayThis song is somewhat of a deeper cut, as it was the fourth single from the album. It is, as the name suggests, a song about a young runaway who lives on the streets of the city. It hit number 9 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, but did not make the Billboard Hot 100. Come AgainTommy Shaw takes lead vocal duties on this song, and it has a sound reminiscent of some of this work with Styx. It is about about a girl to whom the guy can't seem to leave behind.. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series "Mission Impossible"The television series reboot inspired by the Tom Cruise movies ended in February 1990. STAFF PICKS:Kickstart My Heart by Motley CrueWayne kickstarts the staff picks with The Crue off the album "Dr. Feelgood." This song was supposedly inspired by an incident when Nikki Sixx overdosed, and the paramedic injected adrenaline into his heart. This metal song made it to number 27 on the pop charts. Dangerous by RoxetteJohn features Swedish duo Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. Both Fredriksson and Gessle were successful solo artists before coming together to join Roxette. The group toured until 2016 when Fredriksson was diagnosed with brain cancer. She passed in 2019.Black Velvet by Alannah Myles"Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell. Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high." Rob's staff pick is a sultry blues number with a shuffle beat. Songwriters Christopher Ward and David Tyson wrote this in homage to Elvis Presley. Myles' single came out in December 1989, and Robin Lee's country cover appeared shortly thereafter.I Wish It Would Rain Down by Phil CollinsBruce's staff pick is a ballad from Collin's 1989 album "...But Seriously". Eric Clapton plays lead guitar. The song is about a lost relationship, though Collins said in an interview that it "is about a frustrated weatherman that regularly predicts rain showers but never gets it right." We'll let you be the judge on the accuracy of that interpretation. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cliffs of Dover by Eric JohnsonGuitar virtuoso Eric Johnson takes us out with his big instrumental hit which was on the charts at the time, and would become even more famous on the video game Guitar Hero.

In this episode, accomplished author and veteran foreign correspondent Toby Harnden joins the Crew Reviews to discuss First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11, his riveting account of the first U.S. military action in Afghanistan. "Harnden skillfully interweaves dramatic action sequences with the backstories of the book's central figures, and briskly highlights the failures of U.S. policy in Afghanistan. Readers will be swept up in this little-known chapter of America's 'forever war.'" –Publishers Weekly America is reeling; Al-Qaeda has struck and thousands are dead. The country scrambles to respond, but the Pentagon has no plan for Afghanistan—where Osama bin Laden masterminded the attack and is protected by the Taliban. Harnden reveals that the lessons of early victory and the haunting foretelling it contained—unreliable allies, ethnic rivalries, suicide attacks, and errant US bombs—were ignored, tragically fueling a twenty-year conflict. On October 17, 2001, Team Alpha were dropped into the mountains of northern Afghanistan. Two of the eight appear in this week's episode alongside the author of a new book telling the story of the first Americans behind enemy lines after 9/11 – and what a story it is. Justin Sapp was a Green Beret detailed to CIA, he would go on to be a commander in the Asymmetric Warfare Group, and is currently Senior Military Advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. David Tyson was a polyglot former Central Asian academic who fought jihadists at close-hand to help his comrade, ex-Marine Mike Spann, the first American casualty in a war that would go on to become the longest in American history. In an extended podcast that is both conversation and historical document: this is their story. Award-winning journalist and author Toby Harnden helps contextualize the story of Team Alpha. The town of Bickenhole is pissed - and for once, it’s not alcohol related. It seems conducting a counselling session live on air isn’t what the locals want, making Rosie (Claudia Grier) and Neil (Curtis Ledsham) public enemy number one and two. This backlash spurns the charming Bickenhole Radio General Manager Declan Eaveson (Allan Lear) to act in the only way he knows how and delivers a startling ultimatum. Heather Rankin follows her 2016 Juno Award Nominated solo album,A Fine Line, with a Christmas album, Imagine. Her angelic voice wraps her listeners in coziness and nostalgia in this ten-song collection, which includes both original songs, cowritten by Rankin, and traditional songs she grew up singing at Christmas. The evocative imagery in Rankin’s contemplative lyrics inhabit the same deeply personal world Rankin created in A Fine Line, while songs like “Wrap it Up” harken back with frivolity to the music she created with her siblings as The Rankin Family. Imagine begins in contemplation of Christmas Past with Rankin’s soaring rendition of “Once in Royal David’s City,” a song that conjures memories for her of the traditional carols that were sung during the Midnight Masses of her childhood. She also lends her ethereal voice to a definitive rendition of “Silent Night,” a song she remembers being sung with verses in six different languages at St. Mary’s Parish in Mabou, Nova Scotia. The orchestrations of these two carols by Imagine’s producer, Steven MacKinnon, as well as the addition of the St. Michael’s Choir School, root them gorgeously in the divine origins of the season. “Olde-Fashioned Christmas,” written by Rankin, MacKinnon and David Tyson, weaves the magic of Christmas into the “humble abode at the end of the road” Rankin and Tyson so beautifully conjured in A Fine Line’s “We Walk As One.”
