Today, we're talking about awe and wonder and all the incredible benefits that these simple and accessible emotions can have in terms of learning and child development. And I have the perfect guest here to talk about it — Deborah Farmer Kris, a child development expert, longtime educator, and author of the wonderful new book Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive. In this conversation, we talk about how and why awe is such a powerful tool for emotional regulation, learning, and resilience for our kids. Deborah shares some of the neuroscience behind wonder and walks us through how simple moments of awe, like listening to music, walking outside, or witnessing a small act of kindness, can lower stress, spark curiosity, and build deeper connections for our kids. She also offered strategies for cultivating awe with your child, even during the most challenging seasons of parenting. This episode is a beautiful reminder that we don't have to add one more thing to our to-do lists to make a meaningful shift. Sometimes, it's about slowing down, noticing what's already here, and inviting our kids into that sense of wonder with us. And I think what I love about this so much is that awe is something that's available to all of us, and experiencing it, even for little moments, not only feels wonderful (pun intended), but it has very real, positive benefits. About Deborah Deborah Farmer Kris is a child development expert and the author of "Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive,” the I See You board book series, and the All the Time picture book series. Her bylines include CNN, PBS KIDS, NPR's Mindshift, The Washington Post, the Boston Globe Magazine, and Oprah Daily. Deborah is currently an expert advisor for the PBS KIDS show, “Carl the Collector,” and spent 20+ years as a K-12 educator. Mostly, she loves sharing nuggets of practical wisdom that can make the parenting journey a little easier.   You'll learn: How the powerful emotion of awe builds resilience and supports well-being Why curiosity and wonder spark internal motivation and deeper learning How to tap into nature, art, music, and kindness as everyday sources of awe for children Why experiencing awe can lower stress, improve memory, and support emotional regulation How parents can nurture awe by modeling curiosity and slowing down with their kids Ideas for creating small, shared moments of wonder strengthen connection and support family wellness  Resources: Deborah Farmer Kris' website Parenthood 365 Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive by Deborah Farmer Kris Raising Awe-Seekers Podcast Deborah on Instagram Deborah on LinkedIn You Wonder All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris You Are Growing All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris I Love You All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kirs You Have Feelings All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris Dr. Dacher Kelter Dr. Michele Borba Mindshift (KQED / PBS) Pub Choir Robert Waldinger Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness by Jamil Zaki The Happiness Study at Harvard Challenge Success I Love N.Y.E. Wow, what an inspiring chat with Deborah Farmer Kris! This parenting expert really knows her stuff when it comes to helping kids (and us grown-ups!) keep things in perspective.  Deborah started out as a K-12 teacher, but soon realized her true passion was parent education. She saw how modern families often lack the support networks that used to be more common, and wanted to find new ways to share practical parenting wisdom. That's why she created the "all the time" children's book series - picture books that tackle important topics like emotions, with tips for caregivers in the back. But the real eye-opener was learning about Deborah's upcoming book, "Raising Awe Seekers." Turns out, the emotion of awe has some amazing benefits for kids' development, like boosting curiosity, academic success, and even generosity. Deborah shared all kinds of fascinating research on where we can find awe in everyday life - from nature and music, to simply witnessing acts of kindness.  We also had a listen back to a conversation we had with Ben Feller, the author of  Big Problems, Little Problems. Deborah Farmer Kris is a child development expert, author, and former educator -- and she still finds raising kids a challenge! "None of us are slot machines," she says. "It's not like you put in this language and out pops a child who says 'yes, mother.'" Parenting, Kris says, is humbling, partly because "there's not one method that works for every child." Every child is different. So is every parent. And yet, helping our children develop their emotional literacy skills is one thing we can do to help them thrive. You can begin by taking a moment to calm yourself when you son's behavior is out of line or upsetting. Then, get curious. Often, another need lurks beneath. When you and your son are calm, try saying something like, "I noticed..." State your observation; allow some space and time for your son to respond. "'I notice' takes the judgement out of it," Kris says. And even if your son chooses not to respond in the moment, your words convey that you see and care about him. In this episode, Jen, Janet, & Deborah discuss: Why striving for perfection parenting is wasted effort -- and what you should strive for instead The link between emotional literacy & boys' behavior Letting boys tell their story (vs. making assumptions about their behavior) Tailoring your communication to your boy's temperament (whether he's an introvert or extrovert) The value of the village Communicating with teachers Helping kids understand unconditional love The power of awe and wonder Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: parenthood365 -- Deborah's website I Love You All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Have Feelings All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Are Growing All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Wonder All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive, by Dr. Marc Brackett (book mentioned at 13:11) Awe Might Be Our Most Undervalued Emotion. Can Your Biological Age Tell You How Old You Really Are?

How old are you really?  There is a growing interest in biological age vs. your chronological age.  The idea behind it is that your cells and organs age differently and knowing your biological age can help you postpone or avoid age related illnesses.  There is currently no standard way to measure it, but scientists and start-ups are developing ways through blood tests or saliva tests.  Betsy Morris, senior writer at the WSJ, joins us for what to know.   Next, there is a lot of frustration when kids are misbehaving or acting out.  So how do you discipline when it happens, especially if you might be in a public place.  Is a timeout in order or a time-in?  It also helps to explain why their actions are a problem, many times we assume kids know better, but sometimes they don't.  Deborah Farmer Kris, education journalist and founder of Parenthood365, joins us for how to discipline in the heat of the moment.   Finally, for all you fans of intermittent fasting, a new study concludes that it might not be all it's cracked up to be.  Time restricted eating goes like this… eat anything you want as long as it's only between a 6–8-hour time period.  The new study let one group of participants eat a set number of calories between 8a-4p and the other group the same number of calories at whatever time they wanted.  What they found was there was no difference.  Gina Kolata, medical reporter at the NY Times, joins us for what is all means. The one thing all of us want for children is for them to feel loved, important, and special. As much as we want that, we don't always succeed at it — life gets busy, and even the most well-meaning adults get frustrated and have bad days. Since neurodivergent kids get exponentially more negative messaging each and every day because of their differences, it's crucial that caregivers make a conscious effort to ensure that these kids feel loved and lovable.  In this episode of the Parenting ADHD Podcast, I'm talking with the author of the “All the Time” children's book series, Deborah Farmer Kris, about the steps parents can take to ensure that kids feel truly loved and loveable. Showing our children that our love is not based on how “good” they are is an important part of creating a lasting bond between parent and child. Not only that, but it can actually help our children regulate their emotions better, and gives them the emotional intelligence needed to navigate tough feelings for the rest of their lives. But how can we best explain this concept to our young kids? And how can we use these principles of kindness and positive language to lift ourselves up as parents? In this episode, I talk to child development expert and author Deborah Farmer Kris about how we can create a home where our children know they're loved unconditionally, while also showing ourselves the same compassion. Founder of Parenthood365, Deborah works as a parenting columnist and consultant for PBS KIDS, writes about child development for NPR's MindShift, and is the author of the “All the Time” picture book series. Her work has also been featured in The Washington Post, Boston Globe Magazine, and Oprah Daily. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ann-mckitrick/support

Staying Home For The Holidays

Coronavirus cases continue to surge around the country and here in the commonwealth, and we're all starting to come to terms with how different our holiday celebrations will have to look this year. On Wednesday, Governor Andy Beshear said Thanksgiving gatherings in Kentucky shouldn't include more than eight people, coming from only two different households. But what if you have family members who still think it's a good idea to gather? How will you communicate with them about why you won't be there? This week, we're talking about adapting our celebrations to the times we're living in. Childhood development expert Deborah Farmer Kris shares some ideas about making the holidays feel festive for the children in your life, and how to explain to them why things have to be different this year. Even in the best of years, holidays can turn up the pressure on relationships. So marriage and family therapist Eric Sharp joins us to talk about navigating tricky interpersonal dynamics. We talk about how to defend against this year's unique flavor of holiday stress, and which harmful coping strategies we should be trying to avoid. More people than usual may be experiencing grief this year, and the holidays can make even old losses feel fresh again. So we look at healthy ways to process those challenging feelings — both for adults and children. And even though the holidays are weird, we still gotta eat. Lexington Chef Samantha Fore of Tuk Tuk Sri Lankan Bites has some advice for what to put on the table this season. She talks about how to scale down some traditional holiday meals for smaller groups, and shares non-traditional dish ideas for these non-traditional times.

We discuss a blog by Gayle Allen and Deborah Farmer Kris called “Why It's Important To Teach Empathy To Boys”. They define empathy as the ability to sense other people's emotions coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling.  How does this relate to parenting?  We discuss three benefits of raising an empathetic child: It breeds courage- this will help your child stand up for those in need of help. It breeds happiness- it gives our children the ability to have stronger interpersonal connections, and are more eager to collaborate, effectively negotiate, demonstrate compassion, and offer support. It breeds thoughtful problem solving. Empathic problem solvers put themselves in others' shoes in a way that allows them to design solutions to problems that will help us evolve. We follow up on our talk from last week's podcast about the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision. Todd also shares a few “tricks” or “reminders” to reduce the possibility of forgetting your child in the back of a car during the warm summer months. Cathy also shares 3 things that content people do: Differentiating between feelings, thoughts, and me Practice what you want instead of talking about what you want Live in present time We also refer to a previous podcast titled, "She was cut from her soccer team (what she did next might surprise you)"  which is a wonderful example of how our children are here to teach us. Do you know any parents that are polite and gentle with you while at the same time are nasty and cruel towards their children?  We ask the question- why is this okay?
