On Georgia's southern border lies the Okefenokee Swamp, our nation's largest intact blackwater wetland. For thousands of years it's been a place of refuge and recreation, but modern industry is threatening to change it forever. Listen in this week to Deborah Reed (Reed's Grocery Store) and Rena Peck (Georgia River Network) as we discuss the value of the Okefenokee and the dangers that are threatening its future! www.ProtectOkefenokee.org www.GARivers.org
It had to happen. We finally check out the infamous, the legendary, the nigh-on-indescribable work that defined a generation, 1990's Troll 2. Directed by Claudio Fragasso and starring Michael Paul Stephenson, George Hardy, and Deborah Reed, Troll 2 has exactly zero connection to the movie Troll and indeed zero trolls in it. But does it deserve the reputation and cult following that it has? Float along with the manatees to the mysterious town of Nilbog as they talk sorcery, lavender dating, geography, and what makes a life well lived while trying to decode this mind-bending work that the world still isn't ready for and probably never will be. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matinee-manatees/support
Deborah Reed is a full-time consultant and grant writer who completely changed the way she was running her business after joining the Grant Writing Academy. Deborah joins us to discuss what she learned from the Grant Writing Academy, the ways it changed her grant writing business to be more sustainable, and the lessons it taught her about how to charge grant writing clients. She also explains what you need to build a grant writing consultancy, why consultants get treated better than employees, and the ways to position yourself as a thought leader. This episode features cinematic sound. Ben Lay was under 4 feet tall with a hunched back. He was an outcast from the quaker community. A hardened and experienced sailor, sailing the toughest waters, in the most challenging era of modern history. He was also the most moral and visionary leader in colonial, pre-revolutionary America. He relentlessly lashed the church and colonial leaders for committing the greatest sins "the devil ever brought into the church in America." Ben Lay became a major influence on Deborah Reed and Benjamin Franklin, setting a course for the religious movement to support the abolution of slavery. Yet Ben Lay was banished from the history books. This is a time when America needs new role models, particularly those still unaware that the original white-American identity was born in the law books of 17th century British colonies, for the purpose of establishing a caste system built on racial slavery. For all our sakes, herein lies a true American hero. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

First of all I keep incorrectly stating the film's name. Today's bonus watch-a-long episode is the 1990 horror-comedy film Troll 2. The film centers around the suburban Waits family who are taking part in a cultural exchange with a family in a small rural town. The town is filled with vegetarian goblins who seek to mutate the family into plants so that they can eat them. Troll 2 was directed by Claudio Fragasso (under the pseudonym Drake Floyd) and stars Michael Stephenson, George Hardy, Margo Prey, Connie McFarland, Deborah Reed, and Jason Wright. n her latest novel, The Days When Birds Come Back, Deborah Reed weaves an unforgettable tale of redemption and perseverance that questions what it means to love in times of grief and sorrow. Still raw from her divorce and the recent loss of her beloved grandparents, June returns to the Oregon coast and the house that holds her dark memories. With plans to sell her grandparents’ historic bungalow, she hires Jameson, a stranger from out of town, to restore it over the summer. But upon meeting, June and Jameson realize they have much more to contend with than an old house. Propelled by Reed’s “gorgeous and wise prose” (Cheryl Strayed), The Days When Birds Come Back follows June and Jameson as they confront their harrowing, intertwined pasts. As the walls of June’s childhood home come down, long-buried secrets are exhumed. Jameson’s marriage is crumbling under the weight of a traumatic loss that took place years ago in June’s town, and June is grappling with the guilt of her troubled adolescence and father’s elusive death. Alone in the sweltering heat of the summer, their chemistry is undeniable. But can they find the forgiveness they need in time to build a future together? Scintillating and brimming with hope, Reed’s gripping story will keep readers on the edge of their seats. “An emotionally satisfying novel” (Publishers Weekly) set against the backdrop of Oregon’s charming, rustic coast, The Days When Birds Come Back is the perfect book to escape with this winter.

We had fun (lots of fun with lots of laughter) last Friday while talking to Deborah Reed and exploring her new book, The Days When Birds Come Back. We talked diction, structure, and tone, but we also explored the much larger themes of loss and pain -- and delved into how June and Jameson (her dual protagonists) rebuild their lives after watching them crumble.
