I've made it my business to know. I've been a professional in the sports nutrition field for more than a decade. But, my love of the game, all games, actually goes much, much farther back."Growing up, it seemed to me that the whole state of Nebraska was focused on football. People drove hours to see the Cornhuskers play. Neighbors who moved out-of-state flew back to town for games. On game weekends my house was a sea of red and white clothing as my entire family gathered to listen to the game on the radio. I was hooked! My interest in sports grew, exponentially, from there.By high school I'd decided to become an athletic trainer. In college, with the encouragement of a mentor (an athletic trainer), I combined my passion for sports with an interest in nutrition. I decided to major in "sports" nutrition, with an emphasis in athletic training.Seeking the best education possible in both fields, I headed off to Arizona State University, a Division I College. This week Kristi chats with two of her old friends, Ben Weatherwax and Michael Fairley, lightweight Harvard Rowing and Saratoga alumni who just won their race at IRAs. The guys take us back to the beginning of their rowing careers (in fourth grade!) to high school rowing (including winning Nationals) and through their unconventional roads to Harvard. We hear about how they helped turn their less-than-stellar program to into one of the top programs in the nation, and learned the lesson that more hard work and dedication is usually the answer. After racking up one too many 2nd place finishes, they made a pledge of “no more silver medals” - and it worked. But watch out for the buoys. Plus: Kristi is rocking Comfort Plus seats and gelato as she trains in Italy, but her traveling library is weighing her down. Will she and Sophia be able to assemble their fan? Stay tuned. Looking around the automotive world, it seems that all the car clubs we talk with are involved in the community. This includes having a charity or charities that they try to support - giving back to the community. So it makes sense that a charity would use cars for the benefit of kids and what better way to do it than recycle old vehicles that are headed for the salvage yard....or at least close to it.MISSION STATEMENTWe solicit donations to help kids graduate to give them an opportunity to build a better future. VISION STATEMENTTo be the best donation program & public auto auction in the country. We talk with CEO, Colin Weatherwax about the Cars for Kids in Texas, and how they work to help kids. We learn about an effort in Houston to help kids that have dropped out of school to finish that part of their education - some people are compelled to drop out to support family. We look at the online auction and find some interesting items, which Colin helps explain how that part of the process works. In our New Car Showroom, Michael Marrs has been checking out the 2024 Chevrolet TRAX ACTIV, one of the five trim levels on the reissued TRAX.---- ----- Want more In Wheel Time Car Talk any time? Bob Weatherwax;Four Feet to Fame: A Hollywood Dog Trainer's JourneyMy name is Bob Weatherwax. My father was Rudd B. Weatherwax, best known as the original owner and trainer of Lassie. My father and I were the trainers of some of Hollywood's most famous dogs. From my Dad's work with Asta in the original Thin Man series, up until my work with Einstein (the dog in Back to the Future), we have created a long and storied legacy of trained dogs in the motion picture industry. Of course, the most memorable animal in our work was none other than Lassie, the cultural icon of both movies and television. My family's journey began with my grandfather, Walter S. Weatherwax, who was a deputy United States Marshal in the New Mexico Territory. He was also an inventor, and even a trick-rider in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.Economic hard times brought Walter to Hollywood, when the film industry was in its infancy. At that time, some of Hollywood's silent legends were making their mark on American culture. Among the stars was a German shepherd named Rin Tin Tin. It was in that unique place and time, that Walter and his sons, (Rudd, Frank, and Jack), made their own mark on American movie history. My father's brother, Jack, was the trainer of Toto in the 1939 classic, Wizard of Oz. Dad's brother, Frank, trained Spike, the dog in Disney's Old Yeller. Rudd, my Dad, trained Asta, Daisy, and Lassie, the collie who would rise to super stardom. I worked with Dad from the early 1960's until his death in 1985. I carried on the Lassie legacy until 2002. Then, against my wishes, the Weatherwax family voted to sell the Lassie trademark.Due to my father's genius, we transformed the training of dogs from simple props on a movie set into actors who seemed to behave with human-like emotions. Dad was a transitional figure in Hollywood animal training, and my experiences with him from childhood to adulthood have transformed my life and made me who I am today.I hope that my father's life-long labor of love, of which I am proud to have shared by his side, will be uplifting in a world that - more than ever - needs some inspiration from the past.https://weatherwaxtraineddogs.com/Music Playlist;1. Obviously no one would say the three words that make up this week's show title, certainly not more than once. But we have arrived both at the end of the alphabet and of season 9, and most of this episode concerns the Watch, and Granny, so I thought, Y not? The Portal's return may be delayed beyond the first Friday in July. The reason Y is explained at the end of this episode. Come join our Discord community, Friends of Medieval Gnome Productions! A few weeks ago, Annie interviewed Jon Provost, who played the little boy Timmy on the Lassie TV series in the 1950s and 60s. He talked a little bit about Rudd Weatherwax, who was Lassie's owner and trainer. Jon talked about how Weatherwax only trained with praise and rewards, and Annie described him as "progressive." After the episode aired, however, she found some old videos that showed training methods that suggested otherwise. In this episode, Annie reads from Weatherwax's 1971 book, The Lassie Method: Raising & Training Your Dog With Patience, Firmness & Love, and considers the pros and cons of his suggested training techniques. Notes: Free ebook on dog training techniques you can use on people: http://schoolforthedogs.com/people 1971 footage promoting the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMrD3wO2m0I The Lassie Method: Raising & Training Your Dog With Patience, Firmness & Love --- Partial Transcript: Annie: So a few weeks ago, I interviewed Jon Provost, the actor who played Timmy on the TV show Lassie when he was a kid. And we talked just a little bit in the episode about Lassie's trainer and owner, whose name was Rudd Weatherwax. And he was kind of a big deal in the world of commercial dog training in the early to mid 1900s. He trained Asta for The Thin Man. He trained Toto for The Wizard of Oz, but Rudd Weatherwax wasn't really the focus of the interview. And, you know, I admit in some episodes I have more of an agenda than in other episodes. Some episodes of this podcast, I am just interviewing people who have done interesting things with dogs or are working with dogs. I like stories about people and dogs, and I like sharing those stories, but of course I am dog trainer. I am opinionated. I have very specific points of view on the subject matter. But two things. One, I think I just assumed that someone who spent so much time on set with a dog and their trainer would be able to recognize what they were doing as far as training goes. Like I think I just take for granted at this point that someone could break down what someone's training methods are or what their approach is. But in reality, I know things can seem kind of opaque when you're watching training happening. And if you don't know what to look for or what you might not want to be seeing. I mean, I don't know. Also I'm talking to a man who is recollecting things that happened 60 years ago when he was a kid. The other thing of course, being that Rudd Weatherwax maybe really was all praise and reward with Lassie on set or whenever Lassie was with Jon Provost. They worked together very closely for many, many years, the dog who played Lassie and Rudd Weatherwax. Interestingly, they only ever had one Lassie at a time. I learned that speaking with Jon. Anyway, that dog, whichever Lassie it was at the time, and Rudd Weatherwax I'm guessing had a very strong bond. And I'm sure that that dog was tuned into understanding what Rudd Weatherwax wanted with very, very little force or coercion necessary because they had such a history working together. And also, because again this is me guessing, that they did a lot of training for him to learn new things off set. So by the time they got onset, it was more about maintaining those behaviors, which could be done using positive reinforcement. Cause that's the way that you're going to encourage behaviors that you want to keep happening. And if you're doing something on a set in front of a camera where they might do several takes, you want behaviors that are going to keep happening... Jon Provost was the boy sidekick to the 20th Century's most-loved dog: Lassie. In the late 1950s and early 1960s a third of American households tuned in each week to watch Lassie, a whip-smart Collie, help Timmy get out of countless pickles. Lassie came to define the "perfect" dog. In this episode Provost, who is now 70, talks about working with a dog star, and about what he learned from Lassie's rather progressive trainer/owner, the famous Hollywood dog trainer Rudd Weatherwax. He and Annie also discuss his early exposure to the notion of a "therapy" dog, and his more recent work to bring attention to rescue dogs, Army dogs, and more. Annie ends the episode by reflecting on how Lassie impacted our cultural notions about dogs, perhaps not for the better, and reads from Jean Donaldson's book Culture Clash, about the Disney-fication of dogs and how a desire to anthropomorphize "man's best friend" has led to some huge errors in the way people attempt to train and understand the dogs who live with us. Its star, whose name was Baby, was a guy playing the role of a girl -- a nonhuman girl. That girl was, of course, Lassie. [Whistling - Lassie theme] Baby has long since left us. The show is only on in reruns. And today, most people have not heard of Lassie's famous trainer, Rudd Weatherwax, who was responsible for many of the 20th century's most famous dog actors, but last year, his best friend is still around and still hanging out with dogs like it's his job. Today, I have for you an interview with Jon Provost who played Timmy on the show Lassie for most of his childhood. He spoke to me about Weatherwax’s progressive and positive reinforcement based training methods, what it was like to grow up off camera with Lassie, and about his continued work with dogs. Fun fact, did you know there was actually never an episode where Timmy fell in a well, can you believe that? Before we get started, I just wanted to suggest that you go check out my brand new one hour long master class. It's called “Three simple things every dog owner needs to know to teach a dog quickly and easily without, force, pain, a major time investment or fancy equipment.” It's a presentation where I talk about how I got into dog training, how it kind of revolutionized how I see the world. You'll learn to think about the way your dog learns, specifically wow to think about the way in which your dog is learning thanks to classical conditioning all the time... Tired of crowded trout streams? Looking for a new fish to catch on a fly rod that will give you a tussle and challenge your skills? Look no further than the white bass, which is a common fish in many parts of the US, from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi drainage and has even been introduced into some western lakes. My friend Jim Weatherwax is a white bass fanatic (he also fishes for wipers in the same waters, which are a freshwater sterile hybrid of a white bass and a striped bass) and offers solid advice on where to find these great fish, what tackle to use, and best techniques to catch them. Warmwater fish like this are great ways to spread out the fishing pressure that we all experience from time to time. We have a long fly box this week, with lots of interesting questions and tips from listeners, including: What does it mean when a fly rod is rated for more than one line size, like 5/6? Should I use a full fluorocarbon leader when fishing with indicators? A suggestion on looking for blue cheeks and clean halos when trying to tell if a brown trout is wild. What is the difference between the new Recon 2 and the Helios 3 rods? Should I buy a wading shoe one size larger than my shoe size when buying wading bots online? What do you think of using 2X short hooks for small nymphs? I am not able to catch fish on streamers during the winter in a tailwater. What am I doing wrong? Are fluorescent hot spots on nymphs effective? Is it ethical to trim small tree branches in trout streams? Why do trout only take big attractor dry flies right after they land on the water? Are UV resins really effective? Why am I losing so many trout when fishing small nymphs? Am I setting the hook wrong? Do you have some suggestions for catching American shad? Is it worth it to tie your own leaders? And if I do, how can I attach them to my fly line without a loop-to-loop connection? Why do small brown trout attack huge streamers? Should I get a Helios 3 D or F version for fishing UK chalk streams? A suggestion for wearing nitrile gloves for winter fishing.
Weatherwax, that is. The doyenne of the Disc's witches, that is. Foremost among the leaders the witches do not have, she is. Whatever the score between the witches and the wizards, Granny Weatherwax is always ahead of the game. This week we begin to understand why that is, as well as getting a very useful perspective on why witches and/or wizards do not rule the world. We also consider the notion that the trajectories or arcs of development over the books for witches and wizards are mirror images of one another. This may of course be just so much Klatchian mist. Son of a...really, magic? Really? All we were trying to do was cast a simple spell to create a podcast episode where two bumbling, no-talent magicians square off in a contest of raw incompetence. But damn, we must have gotten something wrong, because this episode is way too competitive and full of sex jokes, not at all the light-hearted romp we were going for. Oh well. Maybe no one will notice... Anyway, after years of enjoying a total dearth of animated brooms dancing around and flooding his workspace, celebrated Disney sorcerer Yen Sid is finally ready to take on another apprentice. The only problem is, he has two apprentices. The Orko kid seems to have all kinds of raw magic ability, but also a disturbing lack of skill, focus, or a voice that doesn't grate down Yen Sid's spine. And Rincewind...well, he claims to be a "wizzard" already, and he's quick on his feet, but he's also the unluckiest, most thoroughly non-magical individual Yen Sid has ever encountered. The sorcerer is a patient man, but a busy one, as well; he only has time to take on one of these two projects. Will it be the Trollan jester from Castle Eternia, or the Discworld's most notorious nobody? And more importantly, what insights about gay iconography and 1980s progressivism did MeganBob glean from her first viewing of the He-Man animated series?
In this educational, no-nonsense episode (featuring very little education and a great deal of nonsense), two of fiction's sharpest-tongued and most magically bad-ass witches settle a long-standing grudge when a young man suddenly manifests more arcane power than anyone should be expected to control. With the boy in desperate need of training, a dark choice between freeform, experimental teaching methods and structured institutional learning lies before him, and Granny Weatherwax, the most feared practitioner of headology on the Discworld, and Minerva McGonagall, Hogwarts' resident Transfiguration instructor and Quidditch enthusiast, are engaged in a battle for his very soul! Or at least the right to make cuttingly sarcastic comments about his attendance record. Which witch will prevail in this duel not only of magical might, but of proving oneself a nurturing and effective instructor? RoShawn DiLodovico of the UNspoiled! Podcast joins Smash Fiction to help us find out, along with the likewise debuting Marissa Bond, who arrives to take on the entire goddamn patriarchy! Also, MeganBob has words for Albus Dumbledore (and none of them are "oddment" or "tweak"), Miles' years of childcare experience manifest in the theory that kids like 'splosions, and Kit starts collecting the weirdest baseball cards ever.
From jail time to hip-hop to starting a business with no higher education, Scott Weatherwax has been to hell and back. Listen to the rest of the story here.
