GDP Script/ Top Stories for December 11th Publish Date: December 11th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Wednesday, December 11th and Happy birthday to Nikki Six ***12.11.24 - BIRTHDAY – NIKKI SIX*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on picky toddlers. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Early Graduate: North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Diya Patel, a 19-year-old graduate of Kennesaw State University, earned her psychology degree with honors while balancing a packed schedule of coursework, community contributions, and research. Driven by her dream of becoming a physician, Patel accelerated her studies, taking full course loads year-round to graduate early. She was an active leader on campus, serving as president of the Honors Advisory Leadership Council and founding organizations like the KSU chapter of It’s On Us to combat sexual assault. Patel also engaged in undergraduate research, volunteered with social service groups aiding refugees and unhoused people, and worked at an urgent care facility while honing her multilingual skills. Passionate about education, healthcare, and sustainable development, she aims to continue her global volunteer efforts alongside her medical career, inspired by the diverse, supportive community she found at KSU. STORY 2: Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed a 22,000-acre expansion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to protect the area through land purchases or conservation easements with willing landowners. The plan has garnered strong support from environmental advocates, who are urging the FWS to expand even further to permanently block mining projects near the refuge, including a controversial titanium mine by Twin Pines Mineral. Opponents of the mine argue it could harm water levels, wildlife, and the ecosystem, while Twin Pines claims the project would have no negative impact. While the expansion won't directly influence Georgia's permitting decisions, it reflects a broader effort to ensure long-term protection of this vital blackwater swamp. Local and state officials have also rallied in opposition to the mine, calling for stronger safeguards for the swamp's unique environment. STORY 3: Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award This week, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office became the first DA's office in the U.S. to receive the Agency Trilogy Award from FBI-LEEDA, recognizing their entire command staff's completion of leadership courses. While many law enforcement agencies have earned this award, Gwinnett's achievement is unique among DA offices. The award highlights their commitment to professional development and leadership, aligning with DA Patsy Austin-Gatson's vision for serving the community. The training, which can be completed in about a month, enhances leadership skills and ethics, benefiting the office and its investigators. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL STORY 4: Second Chance Champion: GGC grad overcame debilitating accident to earn degree After surviving a devastating car crash in 2017, Jessica Rantamaki, an avid runner, faced a long recovery from severe injuries. Determined to reclaim her life, she not only returned to running, completing the Peachtree Road Race a year later, but also pursued a college degree at 47. Inspired by her experience and the young man responsible for the crash, she enrolled in political science to understand and potentially reform the justice system. Rantamaki's journey highlights the importance of community support and her desire to contribute positively, aiming to work with nonprofits aiding young or incarcerated individuals. STORY 5: Seckinger High School A State Finalist In Samsung's National STEM Competition Seckinger High School is among 300 U.S. public schools, and one of seven in Georgia, competing for the $100,000 grand prize in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM Competition. As a state finalist, Seckinger received a $2,500 technology prize pack. Their project, EWSEEAI, uses AI to enhance school safety by analyzing security video and audio in real time. The competition encourages students in grades 6-12 to use STEM for innovative solutions to local issues, with this year's focus on school safety, climate crisis, and mental health. Samsung will award over $2 million in prizes. Break 3: And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on picky toddlers *** INGLES 1 (PICKY TODDLER) *** We’ll have final thoughts after this. STORY 2: Lawrenceville Teen Earns Spot In Prestigious Dance Classes in NYC Thirteen-year-old Zharria Musette from Lawrenceville will embark on a six-week intensive dance training in New York City this summer, securing spots at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre School of Dance after successful auditions. Despite initial nerves, Zharria, with only three years of consistent training, impressed judges and earned recognition at recent dance competitions. Specializing in ballet, modern, and jazz, she aspires to dance professionally, with dreams of studying at Juilliard or joining the Rockettes. Her mother, Tai'Sheree, applauds Zharria's dedication and talent, foreseeing a bright future in dance for her daughter. Challenges like childcare and distance from the Capitol persist, particularly for mothers with young children. Rep. Anne Allen Westbrook exemplifies this, navigating long days away from her family in Savannah during legislative sessions. Sen. Kim Jackson, a new parent, highlights the difficulties of balancing lawmaking with childcare responsibilities. Recent changes allowing campaign funds for childcare aim to alleviate some barriers to public service. Despite these strides, women lawmakers continue to advocate for inclusive policies, recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping legislation. STORY 5: Water-hogging data centers flagged in latest ‘Dirty Dozen' environmental watchdog report The Port of Savannah, a major container terminal, has experienced increased shipping traffic since the deepening of the waterway in 2022. However, the Georgia Water Coalition's Dirty Dozen 2024 report highlights the unintended consequences of record economic development, such as the threat posed by new data centers to Georgia's rivers. These data centers strain the electric grid and require large amounts of water for cooling, impacting the environment. The report also raises concerns about water resources in the coastal region, exacerbated by the deepening of the Savannah Harbor, and warns of threats to surface and groundwater. Additionally, the report expresses ongoing concerns about the Okefenokee Swamp amid plans for a titanium mine nearby.   We'll be back in a moment.   Break 3: SCANDRETT   STORY 6: DTL Interview Jaime Ochoa This series is sponsored by downtown Lawrenceville.   ****DTL – JAIME OCHOA***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 8 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. GDP Script/ Top Stories for Mar 29th       Publish Date:  Mar 29th           From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Friday, March 29th and Happy heavenly Birthday to MLB HOF Cy Young. ***03.29.24 – BIRTHDAY – CY YOUNG*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Curiosity Lab Bike Race. Two Teens Arrested After Illegal Street Race In Gwinnett Corps of Engineers raising fees at its Lake Lanier parks and boat launches Singleton Road Residents Getting Their Own Pocket Park, Greenway Trail All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE   STORY 1: Two Teens Arrested After Illegal Street Race In Gwinnett Two teens were arrested for fleeing from an illegal street racing event in Gwinnett, striking patrol cars in the process. John Anthony Pritchett, 19, faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, and possession of firearms during felonies. Dryan Dradarius Vereen, 18, faces obstruction charges. The incident occurred on March 23, with officers responding to gunshots and people fleeing the scene. Pritchett's stolen Dodge Charger collided with a patrol car, leading to a chase and eventual crash. Firearms were found in the vehicle, reported stolen from DeKalb County. Two female passengers claimed they were unable to exit the vehicle. Fortunately, no officers were injured. STORY 2: Corps of Engineers raising fees at its Lake Lanier parks, boat launches The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mobile District announced a fee increase for using corps-run parks and boat ramps at Lake Lanier. Day use and boat launching fees will rise from $5 to $8 this summer. This adjustment aims to sustain recreational facilities' quality and is part of a broader initiative across all USACE-managed properties. The increase applies specifically to corps-run facilities and excludes those managed by other entities like the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. While the fee hike was approved last year, its implementation was postponed to aid local communities recovering from the pandemic's economic impact. The Corps assures visitors of continued commitment to quality recreation and facility maintenance, inviting inquiries about the fee adjustment. STORY 3: Singleton Road Residents Getting Their Own Pocket Park, Greenway Trail Gwinnett County officials are addressing a lack of nearby recreational options for residents near Indian Trail-Lilburn Road by breaking ground on Singleton Park and a greenway trail. The park, funded by various sources including sales tax funds and grants, aims to provide accessible green space and play amenities. Expected to open in late 2025, it will feature a playground, restroom, and picnic areas. The three-quarter-mile greenway trail will connect Singleton and Dickens Roads, eventually linking to Bryson Park as part of the county's broader greenway trails plan. While promoting walkability, officials also highlight accessibility via public transit. Residents anticipate the park's convenience and benefits, particularly for families in the area lacking outdoor play options.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Bill banning puberty blockers for minors languishes alongside other culture war measures During the 2024 Legislative session, two bills concerning transgender issues failed to pass the Georgia House. The bills aimed to restrict transgender children's access to sports teams, restrooms, and puberty-blocking drugs. Despite passing the Senate, the House did not vote on these measures. The bills reflected broader cultural divides, with Republicans supporting them and Democrats opposing. House Speaker Jon Burns emphasized the importance of timing and prioritization in addressing social issues. Proponents of the bills, like Sen. Ben Watson, argued that banning puberty blockers would prevent irreversible decisions for minors. However, opponents, including transgender advocates, highlighted the positive impact of such treatments on mental health and identity affirmation. Another bill addressing student athletes' mental health was also stalled, leaving room for potential reconsideration in future sessions. STORY 5: Immigration crackdown, election law changes go to the governor as other hot-button proposals fizzle The 2024 Legislative session concluded with a flurry of activity, including the failure of several contentious bills. Despite passing the Senate, bills banning puberty blockers for minors and legalizing sports betting did not receive House approval. The last-minute session also saw the passage of bills related to road renaming and property tax relief. However, controversial measures such as an election overhaul and immigration enforcement bills were approved. Additionally, a proposal for a statue honoring Justice Clarence Thomas and efforts to protect the Okefenokee Swamp from mining faced setbacks. While the session ended without certain bills progressing, discussions on key issues, such as Medicaid expansion and environmental protection, are expected to continue.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES 10 – HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE     STORY 6: Targeting immune cells offers hope for preventing breast cancer Researchers at Cambridge University have identified a new pathway for preventing breast cancer by targeting immune cell exhaustion in healthy women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations. These mutations increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The study found that immune cells in breast tissue of these women show signs of malfunction, unable to clear out damaged cells that could develop into cancer. This discovery could lead to using existing immunotherapy drugs as early intervention to prevent breast cancer, offering an alternative to risk-reducing surgery. The research, published in Nature Genetics, suggests a potential preventative treatment accessible to all women.   STORY 7: Scientists bust myth that eggs are bad for your heart A new study debunks the myth that eggs are bad for heart health, suggesting concerns about cholesterol levels are unnecessary. The PROSPERITY trial involved 140 patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease who consumed 12 or more fortified eggs weekly. Results showed no adverse effects on blood cholesterol, with reductions in LDL cholesterol and other heart health markers observed in the fortified egg group. Researchers emphasize that eggs' bad reputation may stem from confusion about egg yolk cholesterol and suggest examining overall dietary habits. They encourage heart disease patients to discuss heart-healthy diets with their doctors.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: ATL HEALTH FAIR   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. On today's episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch joins the podcast to describe the measures still on the table on the final day of the session.     He indicated the state Senate would likely not take up a measure the House passed overwhelmingly to protect the Okefenokee Swamp. He also said he prefers Governor Kemp's limited expansion of Medicaid to a measure Democrats tried to pass that would allow a full expansion of the government program.    On the other side of the aisle, Senate minority leader Gloria Butler responds to Gooch's comments and adds that she thinks rejection of a measure to pass a full expansion of Medicaid is one of the biggest failures of the session.      LINK TO TOPICS  Bill to protect Okefenokee from mining is at crossroads  AJC calls for protection of swamp from mining  Bill for full expansion of Medicaid narrowly fails in committee     Have a question or comment for the show? On December 13, 1990, 27-year-old Kimberly Kaye “Kim” Wallace travels to her estranged husband 62-year-old Dr. Jack Ray Wallace's home in Cobb County, Georgia to grab Christmas decorations. She is never seen alive again. Hours later, a small airplane lands 300 miles to the south near the Okefenokee Swamp. Those piloting the Cessna 172 aircraft did not turn on the radio-activated runway lights while landing, and an onlooker calls the authorities. When the officers arrive, they find Kim's nude body on board the plane stuffed into a large, black toolbox with a plastic bag tied over her head. Piloting the plane is Dr. Wallace's divorce attorney, 53-year-old Michael Glean, and his former neighbor, 43-year-old Frederick Steven Speas. Both men, along with Dr. Wallace and a fourth co-conspirator, are arrested, charged, and tried for orchestrating Kim's murder. In episode 282, Jac and Alexis reveal how an elaborate murder-for-hire plot unraveled through sheer chance.

Due to the threat of titanium mining, the biologically rich and unique Okefenokee Swamp habitat at the GA/FL border has unfortunately been named one of America's Most Endangered Rivers of 2023 (by the organization America Rivers). But there's a wide alliance of bipartisan wilderness and water protectors at https://protectokefenokee.org/ defending this National Wildlife Refuge, including The Georgia River Network. Their Executive Director, ecologist Rena Ann Peck talks to host Carrie Freeman in this 25-minute podcast about why and how so many groups are protecting this delicate and one-of-a-kind ecosystem from damaging mining efforts on the trail ridge (bordering the swamp ecosystem). It's a sacred space to the Muskogee Creek Nation and home to hundreds of plants and unique animals, such as alligators, salamanders, birds, and fish, some endangered. Rena also explains what is being done in the GA Legislature to try to establish permanent protection against future mining (HB 71 Okefenokee Protection Act) and actions to urge the Georgia EPD (Env Protection Division) and Governor Kemp not to issue a mining permit to Twin Pine Minerals company. With overwhelming bipartisan support in favor of park protection, we hope that government listens and acts. Interested citizens can text 52886 with the word SWAMP and it takes you to action items. During his career David was the first host of “Good Morning America” on ABC. Now he's helping tell the stories of veterans.Dallen Lambson - wildlife artist and landscape painter living in Utah. Craig left the corporate life to pursue his passion as an artist, and now paints the stories of WWII as his full time job.Ernie LaPointe - Vietnam Veteran, Native American, and survivor of PTSD living in South Dakota. Through his suffering, Ernie rediscovered his Lakota culture and healing methods. In 2021, after a lengthy battle, Ernie proved through DNA testing that he's the great grandson of Sitting Bull, and the last living direct blood relative. Today he's working with anyone who will listen about personal healing.Chris Adams - naturalist living in the Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia. Still in his 20's, Chris has devoted his life to preserving the ways of the pioneers, and redeveloping the abundant natural foods prevalent in the “forgotten frontier” of the Wire Grass Region.Mark Ware - musician who turned down a record deal at 30 to remain a firefighter. After the tragic death of his daughter, Mark is pursuing his music career and gaining traction with a manager in Nashville, and a tour. In Episode 92, the Camel joins me in the studio to discuss the Suwannee River section of the Florida Trail which we hiked this winter. If you are not familiar with the Suwannee, it is a 246 mile river that begins in the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia and ends at the Gulf of Mexico in the northern panhandle of Florida. On our trip, we backpacked ~34 miles moving downstream and east to west on the Suwannee - from the town of White Springs to Gibson County Park. This section of the Florida Trail is frequently mentioned as a favorite among backpackers, and during the winter months is one of the drier areas on the Florida Trail. In the show, we discuss the dark tannin waters and white sand beaches of the river. We review some native American history in the area, and talk about the springs and sink holes along the Florida Trail. This section is surprisingly challenging - despite the biggest climb being only 80 feet at Devil's Mountain. Find out why and much more in Episode 92! From her owl talon earrings down to her fancy Goodwill boots, Folkston, Georgia black water muse, Okefenokee Swamp philosopher, and soulful songstress-storyteller, Jenn Iona, graces Episode 25: Something In The Water with her lovely face, infectious laugh, humorous tales, and evocative songs. ‘Fire around', the Native American meaning of her middle name, Iona, lends itself naturally to the talented singer-songwriter and employee of Kings Bay Naval Base, as she lit up the Caution Light Media studio with tales of local lore and legends: Okefenokee boogie woman, Tall Betsy, and sidekick, Palsy Baby, a fictitious duo designed to keep swamp children from straying too far from home; and how her own personal nighttime visit to swamp baroness Lydia Stone's grave resulted in a sudden, unexplained blaze of fire and a quick exit from High Bluff Cemetery. She's as much at home around spiders, snakes, and alligators as she is around an acoustic guitar and a well-written song, as proven by her podcast performance of originals: “Hop A Train”, “Lovely Bones”, “No Pooie”, and “Ode To Jackie Carter”. Topped off with a Tail of the Weak tribute to the heroes and those lost on 9/11/2001, this episode is a must for swampwise, whistle-knucklin', cryptozoology lovers everywhere. https://www.patreon.com/somethinginthewater https://somethinginthewater.captivate.fm somethinginthewaterpodcast@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/cautionlightmedia/

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was set aside to protect the fabled Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia and Florida. Tall cypress trees and Spanish moss give the swamp a prehistoric appearance. The Prothonotary Warbler is one of the most striking of the swamp's denizens. Having wintered in the West Indies, a male might return to the Okefenokee and establish a breeding territory. Because it lives down in the realm of trunks and branches rather than up in the leaves, the Prothonotary has adopted an unusual nesting habit for a warbler: it nests in natural crevices or old Downy Woodpecker holes! Dick Flood was a singer-songwriter in Nashville in the 60s. Besides landing a couple B-sides for Roy Orbison and Skeeter Davis, he never quite broke through. His own recordings have a haunting quality, with shadowy instrumentation and a voice that quivers with desperation. After many attempts at a music career, Flood concluded that “Nashville’s no place for a nobody”. He left it all behind and resettled in the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia, where he changed his name to Okefenokee Joe and became a naturalist devoted to a life of preservation and solitude. This week we watch one of Sterling Archers favourite films 1976's Gator.  After his release from prison, notorious ex-con and moonshine distiller Gator McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) moves in with his father in a cabin in the Okefenokee Swamp. His bootlegging plans are cut short, however, when a federal agent tells McKlusky that he will lose custody of his 9-year-old daughter unless he helps bring down local crime lord Bama McCall. McKlusky enlists the help of reporter Aggie Maybank (Lauren Hutton) and a few local eccentrics to bring down McCall's empire.

Mac and Me.   On this episode we speak to British screenwriter and film director Stewart Raffill. Raffill made his feature debut as director with The Tender Warrior (1971), starring Dan Haggerty. Raffill also helped write and produce, and handle animals. It was shot at the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. Raffill sold it to Warner Bros, was unhappy with what they did with it, bought it back, and re-distributed it. His second script was Napoleon and Samantha, which he sold to Disney. Raffill also worked on the film, which starred Jodie Foster and Michael Douglas, as a producer and animal supervisor. He wrote and directed When the North Wind Blows. He shot animal footage for the documentary Wonder of It All. Raffill directed and wrote Mac and Me, made to provide royalties to the McDonald's Foundation and to have a lead with spina bifida, which became a cult favorite and won Raffill a Golden Razzie for Worst Director Please support the Mark and Me Podcast here https://www.patreon.com/Markandme

In this episode of the podcast, Jennifer will introduce you to three such solo travelers who will share their traveling expertise on everything from staying safe to the RV adventures they have on the road. Plus your questions, RV news and Tips and much more. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #179  Feb. 14 2018 of Roadtreking - The RV Podcast: WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK [spp-timestamp time="2:25"] This episode is coming to you from Manatee Springs State Park in Chiefland, Florida, near the famed Suwanee River. The Suwannee River is a federally designated wild river. Mike and Jennifer recording this episode from the picnic table at their camping site at We were at the Jacksonville RV show over the weekend. A shoutout to Ron and Sharri Chafin who were the first to meet us. They brought a very nice birthday gift for Jennifer! We are camping on the Suwanee River, which is the only major waterway in the southeastern United States that is still unspoiled. The Suwanee flows from the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. It winds for almost 266 miles through swamps, high limestone banks, hammocks of hardwood, and salt marshes. It also has fifty-five springs along the way. But besides that, it's particularly famous because of Stephen Foster. He became America's first professional songwriter in the 1800s. He wrote more than 200 songs with tunes and lyrics that captured the heart and spirit of the nation. While writing “Old Folks at Home,” Foster had difficulty finding the right words to complete a verse joining his image of a beautiful river and longings for family and home. According to legend, his brother suggested the Suwannee River after consulting a world atlas. The words fit, and “Way down upon the Suwannee River” was on its way to making the Suwannee River famous around the world. Foster never visited Florida and he never saw the Suwannee River. Nevertheless, since 1935, it has also been Florida's state song. In the 1950s, land was acquired on the Suwannee River at White Springs. The land was developed into the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Shortly thereafter, the Florida Folk Festival was established to highlight the state's cultural history and traditions. This week's episode is about the Carolina parakeet, a cheerful, pretty bird that was once common in the central and eastern United States but which has been extinct for a century. Thanks to Maureen for the suggestion! I've paired it with the elephant bird, a gigantic extinct bird that we don't know much about except for its enormous eggs. The Carolina parakeet, deceased: An ex-parrot next to an ex-passenger pigeon: A still from the 1937? Nelson video: The 2014 mystery parakeet photo: An elephant bird, an elephant bird egg, and Sir David Attenborough (right): Further Reading/Watching: Here's a close evaluation of the Nelson video taken in the late 1930s, supposedly in the Okefenokee Swamp. I can't get the Nelson video to embed properly, so here's a link to it. You'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the page for a decent-sized version that will play. Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week’s episode is about two birds, one small and one really big, and both extinct. Probably. First, let’s learn about the Carolina parakeet, a suggestion by listener Maureen. It was a type of small parrot that was common throughout a big part of the United States, as far west as Nebraska and parts of Colorado and as far north as New York, and as far south as Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico. It had a yellow and orange head and a green body with some yellow markings, and was about the size of a mourning dove or a passenger pigeon. This story of extinction mirrors that of the passenger pigeon in many ways. The Carolina parakeet lived in forests and swamps in big, noisy flocks and ate fruit and seeds. But when European settlers moved in, turning forests into farmland and shooting birds that were considered pests, its numbers started to decline. In addition, the bird was frequently captured for sale in the pet trade and hunted for its feathers, which were used to decorate hats. Part of the reason it was so easy to kill was that if a wounded bird’s cries were heard by other Carolina parakeets—and they probably would hear it, since these birds were loud, with calls carrying up to two miles—the whole flock would come flying out to help the wounded bird. By 1860 the Carolina parakeet was rare anywhere except the swamps of central Florida, and by 1904 it was extinct in the wild. The last captive bird died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918, which was not only the same zoo where the last passenger pigeon died in 1914, it was the same cage. It was declared extinct in 1939. We don’t know a lot about the Carolina parakeet even though it survived into the 20th century because no one made any particular study of the bird. John Audubon painted it and made some notes, and we have a lot of skins, skeletons, and some stuffed specimens, but that’s about it. There were two subspecies, one that lived to the east of the Appalachian mountain range, and one that lived to the west, that went extinct sooner than the eastern subspecies and was more bluish-green than green. One interesting thing that Audubon noted is that cats that killed and ate Carolina parakeets died. The bird ate a lot of cockleburs, and the cocklebur’s seed is poisonous—so much so that livestock die from eating them. If you listened to episode 31, venomous animals, you may remember the Africa spur-winged goose that eats toxic blister beetles, collects the toxin in its tissues, and is therefore poisonous to eat. It’s probable that the Carolina parakeet did the same with cocklebur toxins. Sightings of the bird in the wild occurred through the 1920s and 30s. A whole flock of some 30 birds was spotted in Florida in 1920, and in 1926 three nesting pairs were seen in Okeechobee County, Florida by the Curator of Birds at Florida University, Charles Doe. Doe was so excited to find these supposedly extinct birds that he ROBBED ALL THREE PAIRS OF THEIR EGGS.
