For Episode 9 of the Dakini Conversations podcast I am delighted to welcome Deepak Anand, an Indian explorer, writer and researcher and author of several books on Indian Buddhist heritage sites and Buddhist relics, and founder of a remarkable project to film and document important Buddhist sites by personally retracing by foot, the route of the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim, 7th CE monk scholar Xuanzang's epic journey of over 10,000 miles from China to India and back, to throw fresh light on the routes and sacred places of the Buddhist pilgrimage and create awareness about the importance of Xuanzang in preserving the Buddhist pilgrimage legacy. Anand's walk took six months going through Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and parts of southern Nepal, and ended at Nālandā in Bihar, which was Xuanzang's final destination in his journey, covering a distance of roughly 2000 kilometres. This pilgrimage was no hyper-expensive luxury spa/hotel trip with privately arranged cars and tour guides. It involved Anand walking long distances, sleeping wherever he was offered a place to stay in local villages and institutes, crossing many rivers during the monsoon season and along precarious paths and routes. Making his pilgrimage as close experientially to Xuanzang's (and Buddha's) footsteps as possible. Although Anand has been working on this project since 2020, I only recently discovered his work on his excellent website, Nalanda-Insatiable in Offering (http://nalanda-insatiableinoffering.blogspot.com/), while researching pilgrimage sites of Buddhism myself in relation to my own current andongoing pilgrimage travels around Asia. Part of the project is also to include local communities in their heritage by raising awareness within them but also using their unique local knowledge about the places themselves that have been passed on for generations. In this interview we discuss Anand's background and interest in Buddhism in India and Xuanzang, inspired by the Xuanzang Memorial project built in Nālanda in 2007 (https://artsandculture.google.com/story/xuanzang-memorial-n%C4%81land%C4%81-xuanzang-memorial-nava-nalanda-mahavihara/-gXx1Bey76EHJA?hl=en) his work on reviving walking pilgrimage in India (Cetiya Cārikā), motivation for starting the project, the highlights and challenges of his journey so far, and plans and aspirations for the future.

“The industry, at least as it evolves in different countries, needs to start to look at Canada, and I think a perfect place to start is the regulatory side... There wasn't a roadmap for us to follow; we were the first G7 country to have legalized cannabis at the national or federal level, and I think that's a significant milestone.” “We've got a diverse set of talent across the country that is very specialized in understanding cannabis, and I think that's what we'll be exporting, quite frankly, is that know-how, that talent, that knowledge, on the international stage. While we may not be able to export a lot of physical product itself, outside of medical, I think we'll be able to export that intel, that IP. And we're seeing it…there's tons of companies on the global stage coming here to be able to set up because we've created that atmosphere. So, I think we'll see more of that IP, that talent, being exported out of Canada, because we've just been in it for so long and we understand it better than the global stage. And I think Canadians, generally, will be able to stop Europeans or Americans from making the same mistakes that were made in Canada, because we have the benefit of hindsight.” – Deepak AnandThis week's guest, Deepak Anand, was named a top cannabis industry player by the Financial Post, and deservedly so. He founded the Canadian National Medical Marijuana Association and has guided the development of medical cannabis regulations at all levels of government in Canada, taught courses on professional management of medical marijuana, and been a member of multiple business and non-profit boards in the sector. Most recently, Deepak co-founded and now serves as the CEO of Materia Ventures, which aims to enable global access to medical cannabis by having best-in-class cannabis extraction, processing, and distribution—done to EU-GMP quality standards. Materia's team brings their expertise in manufacturing, processing, extraction, regulation, import, distribution, and retail to operations across Europe. In this episode, Deepak discusses his own career shift from pharmaceuticals to cannabis as well as attitudes toward medical cannabis, illicit markets, GMP production standards, and much more. A self-proclaimed expert traveler with expertise in the medical and adult-use regulatory environments around the world, Deepak brings global examples to his analysis of areas where Canada has set the roadmap, and other areas where the country needs to catch up.This episode was recorded in July of 2021.

European cannabis industry with Deepak Anand. Deepak is recognized as a thought leader in the global cannabis space. He currently serves as the co-founder and CEO of Materia Ventures, a European-focused supply and distribution company for medical cannabis and CBD products. He previously served as VP of business development and government relations at Cannabis Compliance Inc. as well as VP of Canadian licensed producer Zenabis. He is a board member for several for and not for profit cannabis businesses and industry associations across North America and Europe. In contrast to the North American cannabis markets, Materia Ventures believes that the European industry will develop to represent a highly regulated pharmaceutical-like market. Because the majority of global capital continues to be deployed towards cultivation assets, the dry flower will shift to become a raw input as opposed to a format of consumption. For this reason, Materia's strategy is to conduct value-add downstream activities as opposed to cultivation; their core focuses will include extraction, processing and distribution.
