In this episode of Grow Sessions, Tony Pavlakis sits down with Jim Megerson of Anvil Agrinomics about the complexities of designing efficient indoor cannabis cultivation facilities. Titled “Connecting Your Cannabis Grow: Easy Efficiency with Integrated Systems,” the episode emphasizes the critical need for system integration over siloed approaches. Early collaboration between architects and engineers is spotlighted as essential to avoiding costly structural and operational issues. They dive into key design considerations—like balancing upfront costs with long-term returns, adopting effective building automation systems, and tackling the integration of environmental controls (such as lighting and fertigation) from the start. The discussion also explores the value of consistent data tracking for smart operational decisions and the importance of a well-defined business plan that drives infrastructure needs, rather than forcing operations into existing building limitations.Strategic planning and integrated design are essential for the future of efficient indoor cultivation. Tune in now to gain practical insights from this must-hear episode.About Jim Megerson, Anvil ArgninomicsWith over 40 years of experience in the design and construction of building systems, Jim Megerson leads Anvil Agrinomics while keeping current with issues of building systems design, including indoor controlled environments for agriculture, energy efficiency standards and green building practices. Rocco Del Priore, Co-Founder of Sweed POS, discusses the critical importance of compliance and enterprise-grade solutions within the evolving cannabis industry. The conversation centers around Sweed POS's commitment to data security, regulatory compliance, and robust platform functionality, highlighting their achievement of both SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications.1The discussion begins with a deep dive into data security, a paramount concern given the sensitive nature of customer information and financial transactions within cannabis dispensaries. Rocco explains Sweed POS's comprehensive security measures, including encryption, access controls, and intrusion detection systems. He then emphasizes the significance of achieving SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications, industry-recognized audits that validate a service organization's internal controls over financial reporting and customer data security, respectively. Rocco clarifies the distinction between these certifications, explaining that SOC 1 focuses on financial reporting, while SOC 2 addresses customer data and security.2 He also differentiates between Type 1 and Type 2 audits, explaining that Type 1 demonstrates a company's knowledge of required procedures, while Type 2 proves their consistent adherence to those procedures over time. This distinction underscores Sweed POS's dedication to not just meeting, but exceeding, industry security standards. The conversation explores the complexities of data privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA, particularly relevant given the vast amounts of customer data handled by dispensaries. Rocco explains that Sweed POS's all-in-one platform was designed with compliance in mind from its inception, streamlining data management and mitigating the risks associated with disparate systems. This integrated approach simplifies compliance efforts for dispensaries and reduces the potential for data breaches or inconsistencies. Raised within the cannabis community on the hippie communal plant life path. Desiree's mother was an advocate and educator of plant medicines. Her father was a skilled craftsman in addition to cultivating both hemp and cannabis. Desiree was your typical hippie GenX stoner youth - traveler, followed "The Dead", trim-igrated around the Northwestern region until she finally pursued a business degree to engage in the average 9-5 grind in such industries as Commercial Development and Renewable Energy. And then Desiree was diagnosed (and beat) cervical cancer. For years, she lived a double life working a corporate, non-cannabis job and her off-hours paving my path into the 215 medical cannabis landscape. As a relentless cannabis advocate for others, she found herself advocating for her own life. Desiree's experience within the Renewable sector birthed the fondness she now has for legislative bodywork and the commencement of laws for Cannabis within the State of California. As a Cannabis Compliance and Operational Analyst Specialist, she bridges compliance, systems, and processes through her intuitive approach to culture, technology, and cannabis governess. From evaluating and condensing operational overhead to regulatory body compliance framework and policy-making, Desiree drives home compliant operational success in an often complicated cannabis business landscape. Now Logan serves the role of compliance specialist and officer; performing on-site inspections, reviewing sale transactions, security footage and working with federal, state, and local law enforcement and regulatory agencies. When we look at pricing trends in new and mature markets, we see some patterns emerge. In markets that are in early stages of development, we usually see total sales and product assortment grow together. We see this reflected in the Michigan cannabis market, where sales have grown to $171M from December 2019 to July 2021 and product assortment has grown by 25 times in the same time period to nearly 9,000 products. Prices can start out high in new markets, but as supply catches up to demand and competition builds, prices begin to decline. In Michigan, for example, the average item price of cannabis products has fallen by 40% from October 2020 to 2021. Prices can fall in more established markets too. For example, the average price of a gram of Flower in California decreased by 30% from September 2020 to 2021. We also see patterns in discount strategies in more mature markets and newer markets. In California, discount strategies seem relatively stable with a few retail outliers. In Michigan, however, we see discount strategies shift more significantly since the market is young and in flux. Cannabis could bring Germany $5 billion a year. Legalizing cannabis could bring Germany annual tax revenues and cost savings of about 4.7 billion euros ($5.34 billion) and create 27,000 new jobs. Imports of medical cannabis flower into Germany hit record highs in Q4 of 2020, closing the year with a 37% year-on-year growth. As cannabis supply into Germany increases, so too does the competition for producers and wholesalers. Although the German medical cannabis market is at an early stage, it has shown great potential, and its future seems promising. However, it will take time to see how domestic production will affect imports, and how medical cannabis development in Germany will influence the growth of other European markets. When we look at market share trends over the last few years, we notice that market share of Pre-Rolls in Canadian markets is much higher than in US markets. Over the last year market share of Pre-Rolls in Canada had an average of 18.6%, while in the US, market share of Pre-Rolls was an average of 9.5%. When we look at market share by individual states and provinces, we see that Pre-Roll market share in Canadian provinces is much higher than in most US states, with Massachusetts as the one exception. Segment sales share of Pre-Rolls differ significantly between the US and Canada. For example, the second best-selling segment in US markets is the Connoisseur/Infused segment, which makes up 32.4% of sales. But within Canadian markets that same segment makes up only 0.1% of sales. The number of servings sold, or count of Pre-Rolls per package, is also quite different in the US and Canada. For example, Single Pre-Rolls (1 serving) made up 60% of sales in US markets, but they only made up 11% of sales within Canadian markets. This week, Dave Nestoff, director of product and engineering at Simplifya, discusses how he landed at a cannabis compliance software company after two very different careers — and why he loves working for startups. Nestoff is a self-described renaissance man, and the nature of startups allowed him to wear many hats during his career. At Simplifya, he not only works on software engineering, but he also has a chance to flex writing skills cultivated during stints as a journalist and teacher. Software development wasn't the first choice for Nestoff. A few years ago, he was working at a startup marketing firm that exposed him to the business' database and front-end side. It forced him to rethink his career, and he reinvented himself at a development boot camp in Chicago. Simplifya recruited him out of the boot camp because he had a unique perspective as a developer coming from a different career, rather than a green computer science major right out of school. Simplifya is a software as a service (SaaS) company that helps cannabis operators remain compliant with state and local regulations as well as internal best practices. The platform provides self-auditing and assessment software in four different tools:Self Audits: Audits tailored to each business to identify and remedy areas of non-compliance. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Update and track internal SOPs. Smart Cabinet: A document storage and organization tool. License Tracker: Provides reminders for renewals and stores all relevant documentation needed to maintain a license. Nestoff says Simplifya is an out-of-the-box tool used by cultivators, operators and other cannabis businesses to remain compliant. It seems simple, but the software helps ensure that companies don't lose their licenses and can maintain their businesses using best practices. Simplifya has been in business for five years and now has more than 1,000 locations. Its customers range from small, mom-and-pop shops to large multi-state operators and ancillary companies. Documentation and compliance are more labor-intensive in the cannabis industry, and Simplifya is designed to help companies do more with smaller compliance teams. Nestoff says that cannabis operators can help protect their companies by doing things right from an operational standpoint from the outset. The company will be better positioned when regulators start visiting the facility, particularly in states that have recently come online with legalization. Simplifya's audits are simple and straightforward, with a series of yes or no questions catered specifically to each operator and the licenses they hold. It takes state and local regulations and transforms them to be relevant and digestible to each operator. The company has customers in 21 states spanning cultivation, distribution, manufacturing and more. But, as Nestoff says, every operator runs the business in a unique way, which is why it is essential for Simplifya to be configurable to each operator.

In this episode, Brenton is joined by Ralf Kaiser, CEO of Integrated Compliance Solutions – helping banks to manage risk around Cannabis, Hemp and CBD transactions. A very timely interview, with New Zealand about to hear the results of the cannabis referendum; a referendum that gave the public the opportunity to vote on whether the recreational use of cannabis should be legal, based on the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill. With a potential new $1.5billion dollar market about to open up if the “yes” vote wins, this is a must listen for those interested in being the forefront of this exciting new industry. Ralf dispels the myth that banks cannot provide banking services to the marijuana industry because it is a violation of the Bank Secrecy Act and Anti-Money Laundering Statutes. As CEO of ICS, Ralf is an industry leader in compliance software and innovative, cost-effective merchant payment solutions for banks, cannabis, CBD and hemp companies. Join Brenton and Ralf as they explore the future global cannabis market and what this could mean for New Zealand. Find out the lessons that NZ can learn from the US, and how early investors can take action. The NZ referendum results will be live on Friday 6th November 2020, with preliminary results due today (30th October 2020). --- Contact Ralf - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ralfkaiser1/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/ralfkaiser1/) https://www.icslv.com/ (https://www.icslv.com/) --- Additional Links mentioned in Episode - https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/euthanasia-and-cannabis-referendum-results-at-2pm-is-kiwi-social-fabric-about-to-shift/TPQVK3LC5YNEXQC57STW2JVVQE/ (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/euthanasia-and-cannabis-referendum-results-at-2pm-is-kiwi-social-fabric-about-to-shift/TPQVK3LC5YNEXQC57STW2JVVQE/) https://www.referendums.govt.nz/ (https://www.referendums.govt.nz/) --- Contact our host - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentonmwebber/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentonmwebber/) https://www.halftimeorange.co.nz/ (https://www.halftimeorange.co.nz)
