Earth Dreams: Zen Buddhism and the Soul of the World

It's beautiful to be taking refuge together in all the various places we find ourselves.Ah. Here we are. Survivors of the election. Spiritual warriors attempting to live a vow-fueled life. Hearts turned towards love larger then fear. Even if fear is rattling in your gut, or anger is raging strong in your body or numbness has you hiding out.Whatever you are feeling is welcome.Whatever you are feeling is wisdom. Its your body telling you something—That something might be: This isn't ok. NO! I don't feel safe. I am afraid. I don't know what to do. I don't know if I have the energy to fight. This matters. This is what i love. This is what i care about.Or something else. Listen. What is your body trying to say to you? This may change moment to moment. In the Zen Community of Oregon, we are currently studying a text called The Eight Realizations of a Great Being. A set of pith instructions given by the Buddha shortly before they died. This week we explored the Fifth RealizationIgnorance leads to birth and death. Bodhisattvas are always mindfulTo study and learn extensively, to increase their wisdomAnd perfect their eloquence, so they can teach and enlighten all beings,And impart great joy to all.Dogen Zenji calls it Always Maintaining Mindfulness and comments:Mindfulness helps you to guard the dharma, so you never lose it. If you practice this the robbers of fear and desire cannot enter you. Therefore you should always maintain mindfulness. It is like wearing armor going into a battlefield, so there is nothing to be afraid of.When we have mindfulness, or heartfulness—we know who we are, and where we stand. We are aligned with vow, the great vow—to awaken for the sake of all beings!Mindfulness has its popular dimensions in our culture. Its found its way into businesses, schools, the military—its featured in taglines like Mindful Car Washing, Mindful Jogging, Mindful Eating, Mindful Sleep Therapy. Its said to help workers stay focused, increase productivity, basically make everything better…Yet, mindfulness is also subversive. A mindfulness instructor, Zen practitioner and friend said to to me in a conversation once, mindfulness is shadow work. He has taught mindfulness in business settings, and when he said this, I felt the truth in his words. Mindfulness is empowering and it also brings us into direct relationship with the wisdom of our bodies, the feelings perhaps we have been trying to run from, the fixed beliefs that drive our life.Through mindfulness we aren't lost in the wimbs or conditioning of our thinking / reactivity. We can live more authentically, we can ask questions, make space for our anger and feel the wisdom of our fears.Mindfulness is our best english translation of the word sati, which means more “to recollect” or “to remember.” What are we remembering? Our practice, the dharma, heart, we are reconnecting with what really matters. If you are feeling a lot right now, its your body saying yes, this matters, our interconnected life matters. The earth, immigrants in our country, trans + non-binary people, queer folks, women, people of color, the more than human world—matter.Love matters. Wisdom matters. Seeing through the forces of ignorance matter. Awakening from our collective delusion matters.Mindfulness also means being present with, allowing what's here to be here—in the different dimensions of our being:My teacher Chozen Roshi would often teach the four foundations of mindfulness during morning meditation at the monastery. This teaching offers a ground up approach to experiencing this precious interconnected life. Here we start with our body.Body—bringing awareness to the felt sense of our bodies, part by part feeling our bodies from within the somatic experience of the body allows us to awaken to the wisdom of our embodied experience.Feelings—next we include feelings, allowing awareness to make space for the flow of life energy that we call emotion or feeling. To feel feelings without needed to make a story about them, without needing to name them. Just to feel the energy itself. This is our energy. This is our life.Thought—So often we just take our thoughts to be true, or we get in a fight with them. To bring mindfulness to the thought stream empowers us to see/hear what we are telling ourselves. It is possible to experience thought as pure sensation, another sense in the field of awareness. To do this, gives us freedom from the tyranny of our conditioned thoughts. Mind is freed up.Awareness itself—after opening to and including body, feelings and thought, next we open to awareness itself. Resting in pure awareness, senses open, one single unified life. This is our shared being, all is included, all is allowed.Thoughts and emotions often want to take us out of our experience, into story, worry, blaming others, searching for information—we can learn to follow them back home, to the liberated self.I have been reflecting on the teaching of the Five Wisdom Dakinis that comes from the Tibetan tradition, Lama Tsultrim Allione writes about them in her book Wisdom Rising.Dakini is one depiction of the awakened feminine, known also as a “sky-dancer” or “sky-goer”, the dakini principle is here to wake us up from our habits of ego-identification. Dakinis are often portrayed in motion, dancing on delusion and decorated in bone ornaments. The five wisdom dakinis are portrayed as fierce and passionate beings who transmute/use the energy of the emotions as the liberated energy of awakening. I feel like this time is inviting us to feel and use the energy of the emotions to meet the challenges we face as a country and a global community. We need the awakened feminine with her fierce hope and embodied wisdom. The five wisdom dakinis are connected to colors, the great elements and a buddha family. Earth—Yellow — Ratna — transmutes the desire for sensual pleasure and security into the Wisdom of Sameness, Abundance and GenerosityWater—Blue — Vajra — transmutes anger into Mirror Like Wisdom and ClarityFire—Red — Padma — transmutes passionate desire for connection and sexual energy into Discerning Wisdom and CompassionSpace—White — Buddha — transmutes fear/ignorance into All Inclusive WisdomAir—Green — Karma — transmutes jealousy/comparison/insecurity into All Accomplishing Wisdom or Great ActivityThe stories and koans of the women ancestors show us how real women have embodied these energies in their life of practice-realization. Stories help us see beyond ourselves and our limiting beliefs and also remind us that others have faced challenges and difficulties on the path. They also help us connect to practitioners beyond our current teachers or community. Here are some stories I'd like to share:The Old Woman burns down the Hermitage An old woman built a hermitage for a monk and supported him for twenty years. One day, to test the extent of the monk's enlightenment and understanding, she sent a young, beautiful, girl to the hut with orders to embrace him. When the girl embraced the monk and asked, “How is this?” He replied stiffly, “A withered tree among frozen rocks; not a trace of warmth for three winters.” Hearing of the monk's response, the old woman grabbed a stick, went to the hermitage, beat him and chased him out of the hut. She then put the hermitage to the torch and burned it to the ground.Ryonen Scars her FaceLingzhao's I'm helpingSatsujo WeepsTo close, I offer some questions for reflection as we land in this moment and also look to the future. What is this moment awakening in me? (Stay with yourself, listen to your body, feelings, thoughts, vow—we gather wisdom by listening to our whole being, and then use discernment, what is coming from conditioning and reactivity, and what is wise—if you don't know, keep listening)How do I want to show up for myself / my community? What supports / teachings / practices might I need to do this? What nourishes me?Thanks for reading friends! Niguma is considered one of the most important and influential yoginis and Vajrayana teachers of the 10th or 11th century in India. Born in Kashmire, she was a dakini, and one of the two female founders of the Shangpa Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism, along with dakini Sukhasiddhi. Her birth name was Shrijnana (or Palgyi Yéshé in Tibetan). From the perspective of the spiritual lineage, it is said that Niguma's spiritual realisation originates directly from the Buddha Vajradhara, rather than from any living human teachers. The great meditation master and translator, Marpa Lotsawa received teachings from Niguma on at least two occasions. Marpa is said to have visited Niguma each time he traveled to India. Sources say that he sought out Niguma on the advice of Naropa, Niguma's brother. The elusiveness of Niguma is typical of the lore of the dakini, the very embodiment of liminal spiritual experience. For Episode 9 of the Dakini Conversations podcast I am delighted to welcome Deepak Anand, an Indian explorer, writer and researcher and author of several books on Indian Buddhist heritage sites and Buddhist relics, and founder of a remarkable project to film and document important Buddhist sites by personally retracing by foot, the route of the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim, 7th CE monk scholar Xuanzang's epic journey of over 10,000 miles from China to India and back, to throw fresh light on the routes and sacred places of the Buddhist pilgrimage and create awareness about the importance of Xuanzang in preserving the Buddhist pilgrimage legacy. Anand's walk took six months going through Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and parts of southern Nepal, and ended at Nālandā in Bihar, which was Xuanzang's final destination in his journey, covering a distance of roughly 2000 kilometres. This pilgrimage was no hyper-expensive luxury spa/hotel trip with privately arranged cars and tour guides. It involved Anand walking long distances, sleeping wherever he was offered a place to stay in local villages and institutes, crossing many rivers during the monsoon season and along precarious paths and routes. Making his pilgrimage as close experientially to Xuanzang's (and Buddha's) footsteps as possible. Although Anand has been working on this project since 2020, I only recently discovered his work on his excellent website, Nalanda-Insatiable in Offering (http://nalanda-insatiableinoffering.blogspot.com/), while researching pilgrimage sites of Buddhism myself in relation to my own current andongoing pilgrimage travels around Asia. Part of the project is also to include local communities in their heritage by raising awareness within them but also using their unique local knowledge about the places themselves that have been passed on for generations. In this interview we discuss Anand's background and interest in Buddhism in India and Xuanzang, inspired by the Xuanzang Memorial project built in Nālanda in 2007 (https://artsandculture.google.com/story/xuanzang-memorial-n%C4%81land%C4%81-xuanzang-memorial-nava-nalanda-mahavihara/-gXx1Bey76EHJA?hl=en) his work on reviving walking pilgrimage in India (Cetiya Cārikā), motivation for starting the project, the highlights and challenges of his journey so far, and plans and aspirations for the future.

This fireside chat between Khentrul Rinpoche and Judith Simmer-Brown occurred before the 2023 Kalachakra Empowerment in Boulder, Colorado. The renowned Kalachakra-tantra, the most detailed Vajrayana literature, speaks about the degenerate age and the coming Golden Age. The Shambhala teachings are said to be the hidden inner teachings of the Kalachakra, which envision an enlightened society imbued with harmony, compassion, and the diligence of a warrior spirit fighting for the good of all sentient beings. What are the Shambhala teachings of the Kalachakra, and how do they relate to the visions of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche?ABOUT JUDITH-SIMMER BROWNJudith Simmer-Brown, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Contemplative and Religious Studies Emeritx at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where she has taught since 1978. As a Buddhist practitioner since the early 1970s, she became a student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1974 and served as an acharya in Shambhala from 2000-2022. Her books are Dakini's Warm Breath (Shambhala 2001)and Meditation and the Classroom: Contemplative Pedagogy for Religious Studies (SUNY 2011). Rinpoche is the author of Unveiling Your Sacred Truth, The Great Middle Way: Clarifying the Jonang View of Other-Emptiness, A Happier Life, and The Hidden Treasure of the Profound Path.Rinpoche spent the first 20 years of his life herding yak and chanting mantras on the plateaus of Tibet. Inspired by the bodhisattvas, he left his family to study in a variety of monasteries under the guidance of over twenty-five masters in all the Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Due to his non-sectarian approach, he earned himself the title of Rimé (unbiased) Master and was identified as the reincarnation of the famous Kalachakra Master Ngawang Chözin Gyatso. While at the core of his teachings is the recognition that there is great value in the diversity of all spiritual traditions found in this world; he focuses on the Jonang-Shambhala tradition. Kalachakra (wheel of time) teachings contain profound methods to harmonize our external environment with the inner world of body and mind, ultimately bringing about the golden age of peace and harmony (dzokden).2023 Shambhala Teaching Judith and Rinpoche Hosted on Acast. Here is the seventh episode of the Dakini Conversations podcast, an in-depth discussion with the leading Indian Kālacakra scholar and translator, Niraj Kumar, who was also recently promoted to Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture (after being the Director for a couple of years).   Niraj is a commentator on Shakta and Buddhist Tantras, and has been active with various facets of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism for more than a decade. His ongoing work is five volume pentalogy on Kalacakra Tantra, the first comprehensive English translation and new commentary of the Sanskrit text, for several centuries after it was said to have been first written down in the 11th century. The Kālacakra Tantra is said to be the climax of the Indian Buddhist Nalanda tradition and the last major Buddhist tantra composed in India.  Niraj Kumar's first volume on Kālacakra was published in 2022, and the second volume is expected to be released within next couple of months. Niraj is also a pan-Asian thinker and writer on geopolitics in Asia and was instrumental in organizing the First Asia Peace Forum in New Delhi (2015). He is also one of the key architects of ongoing exposition of the sacred relics of Shakyamuni Buddha in Thailand this year. I first became aware of Niraj Kumar when he personally asked me to present his Kālacakra work at the Vajrayana conference in Bhutan in 2022, which he was unable to attend. Several people also suggested that I interview him about his work on Kalacakra. I then had the good fortune to meet Niraj in India last year for an Indian academic conference at which I was invited to be a keynote speaker. At that time, we exchanged our Kālacakra publications and on finally reading his work, I was amazed and fascinated by the research, ideas and revelations in the Introduction to his book. It was surprising that more people did not know about them and so part of the reason for this interview is to bring some of those ideas out to a larger more general audience. See also: https://dakinitranslations.com/kalacakra-2/ During our podcast discussion, we speak about Kumar's Introduction to the first volume, which is full of fascinating research and revelations, including some of the key concepts in the Tantra regarding time (kāla), the three realms (outer, inner and other), the types of breath/energy, and death itself. This is then followed by a discussion of the dating of the composition of the root Kālacakra text itself (1027 CE), the oldest extant texts available of it (one on palm-leaf currently housed at the British Library), and remarkably indeed the proposed authorship of the written root text being the great Indian Mahasiddha, Naropa, who received the transmission of it from his guru Tilopa, who is said to have been taught it in the Kingdom of Shambhala itself.  The latter part of the discussion relates to how the main lineages of Kālacakra came into Tibet, finishing with an analysis of contemporary practice and application of Kālacakra and how it has degenerated away from the words and advice of the root Tantra text with 20th Century mass empowerments to thousands of 'unqualified' people, for predominantly political, social and financial purposes in cohorts with the Chinese communist government. Kumar also states in his book that the empowerments given by the 14th Dalai Lama are also not 'correct' because they were not all given on the full moon, as advised by the root Tantra. Tantric Buddhism is concerned with the direct experience of who we are and what we can become. Its aim is to help us realize our potential by transforming the energy locked in by old habits, fears, and views. This experience cannot be mediated by concepts; it needs to be evoked with the help of symbols. She and Wyoh talk polarity, props, energetic penetration, what it felt like when she finally started to feel turned on agai, raw authenticity, how taboo induces shame and alchemizing it as part of pleasure, grieving breakups, the epidemic of loneliness, opening and closing rituals to a session, eroticism vs. sexual acts, and the clear boundaries and the curriculum she's working on. Madeline shares stories of a multi-day scene on the Burning Man Playa, lugging a bag of torture implements and toys while sweating through NYC (or LA, or Paris, or Mexico City, or wherever work takes her) in latex, the sex talk she got from her dad, and working with friends, and tells us about the beautiful experiences she's had working with men, how she came to specialize in heartbreak healing, and what “the molten state” means.

I did some stuff on WBAI in New York, a radio station, and a radio station in Montreal, and they made some records up of it. There was music, and there was a beautiful calligraphied book, all beautifully set out in a box. The whole thing sold for $4.50 mail order, six records. It was in another economic time, you understand, but that was still a good price. I gave my father, who was a successful man, a copy. And he said, “Pretty impressive.” I said, “Yep.” He said, “Selling it for $4.50?” “Yep.” “Looks like it's worth a lot more than that.”  “Yep.” He said, “I bet you could get ten dollars for this.” “Right.” “Would fewer people buy it?” I said, “No.” He said, “I don't understand you, are you against capitalism?” I said, “No.” He said, “Well, I'm very confused. You've got a product, it could sell for ten dollars, the same number of people would buy it, and you're selling it for $4.50.” I said, “Well, it only cost me four dollars, and there's fifty cents profit.” I tried to figure out how I could explain to him what the predicament was. I said, “Dad, you're a lawyer. A few years ago, remember you tried a case for Henry?” “Yeah.” “Was it a tough case?” “Damn right it was. It took a lot of my time.” “Work at the law library a lot?” “I'll tell you I worked, I really worked on that much more. I had to set a lot of things aside to do that.” I said, “You won it, didn't you?” “Yeah, it went up to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, but I won it!” I said, “Well, dad, I bet you charged a sizable fee.” My father had charged pretty good fees in his life. I said, “I bet you charged a sizable fee to Uncle Henry.” “What, are you out of your mind? It's Uncle Henry! I couldn't do that.” I said, “You see my predicament. If you can find somebody who isn't Uncle Henry, I'll rip them off.” – Ram Dass राम राम राम I AM THE ONE I AM SHIVA

In this episode I am joined by Adele Tomlin, Buddhist practitioner, writer, poet, independent scholar-translator of Tibetan Buddhist texts, and founder of the Dakini Translations website. Adele recalls her upbringing in England, training as a barrister, and work as a strategist in the city of London, before a chance meeting with the 17th Karmapa changed her life forever. Adele traces her beginnings in becoming a Buddhist, her studies of the Tibetan language in Nepal, and thriving in the academic rigour of Tibetology at the University of Hamburg. Adele discusses her published works, shares her research and translation process, and explores the implications of the shentong vs rangtong doctrines of emptiness. Adele also expresses her frustration with gate-keeping in academia, reveals the reasons behind her founding of DakiniTranslations.com, and shares her research into the forgotten female mystics of India and Tibet. …

Spinning Plates welcomes New Yorker DJ Spider onto its roster to kick off 2022 with his ‘Enter The Void' EP, backed by a remix from Phil Moffa aka The Butcha. Rob Hampton, better known to most as DJ Spider, has been releasing his twisted take on Techno and experimental electronica for over a decade on the likes of The Trilogy Tapes, REKIDS, Vanguard Sound! and Berceuse Heroique as well as his and Dakini's own Plan B Recordings and its sub-labels BTU and Sublevel Sounds. Here he joins the roster of Spinning Plates, the London-based label that's established itself as a go to purveyor for leftfield leaning Techno, Electro and more. ‘Incineration Of Years And Truth', our premiere for today, completes the EP, edging things into a dubby territory courtesy of smooth chord sequences, spiraling echoes and bumpy, reduced drums. DJ SPIDER: This record is dedicated to my good friend Mike Huckaby. He planned on remixing "Incineration of Years and Truth" back when I originally made it in 2011, but we never got around to actually making that happen. I'm also honored to have my other close friend Phil Moffa on remix duties. There were many sessions in Phil's studio (Butcha Sound Studio, NYC) where we used to jam with Mike whenever he would come to New York to DJ or hang out. We used to play with synthesizers for hours. We were all good friends and it was perfect to have Phil on this record as well! Mike taught and inspired us to have fun with making music and push ourselves to be the best that we can be. Tantra is an ancient spirituality with roots in Hinduism and Buddhism. One aspect of Tantra is sacred sexuality. Tantric full body orgasm is the spiritual expansion of immense pleasure in every part of your body instead of just in the genitals. Sounds pretty appealing, no? The orgasmic Dakini Raven works as a Tantra practitioner to assist couples and individuals in experiencing this next level of intimacy and pleasure.  In her coaching, Raven explains how full-body orgasms last much longer than traditional forms of ejaculation or release and may feel more like riding a wave of energy rather than just an intense “explosive” feeling. Raven's teaching include mastering sexual energy, which is an ancient spiritual practice that feels like waves of pleasure rolling through your body. It is the greatest expression of sacred divinity. Raven helps people see that experiencing full body orgasm means more confidence, better connection, better communication, and deeper sexual satisfaction.  On this episode, Raven and I have way too much fun discussing the expansion of our sexuality, the many forms of the Female orgasm, full body orgasms, orgasming from breath or a breeze, and how to begin a tantra practice at home with your partner, yourself, and orgasm your way through life!Raven, creator of the Couples Three Hour Tantric Date Night Blueprint, is a Certified Tantra Practitioner, Certified Food & Spirit Chakra Practitioner, Reiki Holy Fire Master, and Energy Medicine specialist. She is a clinical psychology student pursuing her doctorate in Sexology furthering her 5 Pathways To Pleasure research - a tantric-influenced neuropsychology approach set out to prove how orgasm, sex, and empowered self-expression are essential for lasting relationships.  Raven studied Neuropsychology at UC Berkeley researching how to rewire brain synapsis using tantric practices such as breath, sound, and movement. She teaches this groundbreaking 5 Pathways to Pleasure™ to couples and individuals all over the world. Raven hosts events such as Goddess Dance Classes for arousal and pleasure, Couples 3 Hour Tantric Date Night Blueprint, Foundations for How to Achieve Full Body Orgasms and Female Ejaculation. Mandala of the Five Dakini's Meditation Full Practice This is a recording of a complete 5 Dakini Meditation Practice Session at the end of a 6 week study (recorded by Melissa Abbott during a zoom call at my friend Jo Haight Sarling's home in Cocoa Beach, FL.), from a book study and meditation practice group studying the book “ Wisdom Rising” The Mandala of the Empowered Feminine, by Lama Tsultrim Allione. In the first 5 weeks we have studied the individual practices, attributes and states of each of the 5 Dakini's. Sounding their Seed Syllables and embodying their attributes in meditation as a way of transformation burning through encumbered states of being, resulting in a more expanded unencumbered wisdom consciousness of each Dakini, week by week.  This is a Tibetan Buddhist Tantric Practice brought from India to Tibet about 800ad by Guru Rinpoche or Padma Sambhava.  the Mandala as a cosmological system, and through the Mandala we experience the encumbered and transformed unencumbered states of the Dakinis (which are aspects of the sacred feminine). The Mandala being the one ground and the practice is an uncovering of our own enlightened awareness and transformation into enlightened presence. Its been a beautiful journey learning the 5 Dakini Practices with all of the participants around the world including UK, Switzerland, and Argentina. Thank you for your involvements, synergy, focus, love, and interest. Special Thanks to Jo Haight Surling for having the practice at her home in Cocoa Beach and helping me coordinate the process. There really is something special about practicing in a group. The Five Dakini's practices work with transforming encumbered energies ( Samskaras) such as  procrastination, neediness, envy, jealousy, anger, fear etc into “The Wisdom Energies of the Dakinis evolved/transformed/manifersted to an unencumbered view”. The mandala/circle, elemental energies, directional energies, visualization, seed syllables, Uccara, etc are used in the Dakini practices. Ultimately, the absolute level is beyond gender, how on a relative level men and women get to the ultimate level may be very different paths. Women have long thought they have to act like men to attain anything in this world. The cultural messages truly effect and disempower women on so many levels. The Dakini is a messenger of spasciousness, a force of truth, a transitional primal power, a fierce compassion for change and upliftment.  I believe the recognition of feminine empowerment holds a key to cultural evolution and that awareness of practices line the Five Dakini's . I highly recommend you get the book and read it, until you get the book, tho, it is all right to come and practice and get a taste of it and see if it is for you. It is exciting work I ask that we practice not only for ourselves but for the benefit of all.
