The Indian equity markets touched record highs on Thursday. The Sensex rose by 0.43 percent, while the Nifty was up by 0.33 percent. Messaging app Telegram's founder Pavel Durov was recently arrested in France. He is accused of not acting against harmful content on the app. Allegations include drug trafficking, fraud, cyberbullying, and generating fake images. Earlier, John McAfee and Julian Assange have been arrested on similar grounds. Shelley Singh explains the reasons for the arrest, which might have more to do with politics and diplomacy than crimes.Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, announced ambitious plans for Reliance Industries during the company's 47th annual general meeting. He revealed a strategy to double the income of Reliance's digital and retail branches under the brands Jio and Reliance Retail in the next 3-4 years. Ambani envisions RIL's new energy venture to match the size of its oil-to-chemical business, which generated ₹5.64 trillion in FY24, in just five years. Ambani highlighted the transformative plans for Reliance Industries, detailing initiatives across five key business areas: O2C, retail, Jio, media, and green energy, Mint's Anirudh Laskar reports. Ambani is betting big on a future where Reliance isn't just a heavyweight in traditional sectors but also leads in green energy and tech. The plan includes a massive green energy complex in Jamnagar, envisioned as a future global energy hub. Up until a few years ago, you could only take an international flight from one of India's major airports. Flying outside India meant you'd first have to go to either New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai or Bengaluru to hail a long-distance flight. But that changed when many non-metro airports secured the rights to fly internationally. Anu Sharma reports that airports such as Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and Kozhikode are seeing robust growth in international travel. Travellers from these regions usually go to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Anu writes. Millions of students pursue an engineering degree every year in hopes of getting a job offer from India's top IT companies. Last year's graduates were caught in the midst of a storm as many IT firms refused to go for campus placements. This year, Wipro has decided to come back for this exercise. A student might be excited to see that they have been placed in the “elite” category at Wipro, but the salary comes in at only 3.5 lakh rupees per annum. Jas Bardia reports that while Wipro will be going to recruit in a couple of weeks, they will only be rolling out their lowest packages to students. In previous hiring cycles, packages for freshers went as high as 10.5 lakh rupees. Last year's struggles continue for IT sector aspirants. In India, companies are now required to have a certain number of women on their boards, but this often just ticks a box rather than ensuring their voices are truly heard in decision-making. Speaking to Mint's Devina Sengupta, Aparna Mittal from the Samāna Centre for Gender, Policy and Law pointed out that it's not just about having women on boards but whether they're genuinely independent and their opinions valued. Despite this, there's a silver lining as pay for women directors has seen a significant boost, doubling over the last five years due to their increased responsibilities. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, April 17, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian benchmark indices fell for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, influenced by negative cues from global markets which are currently under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. This has sparked a broader discussion about the need for tighter regulation in India's forex market. These platforms are where most foreign exchange transactions happen. They are primarily used by businesses like importers and exporters to manage their currency risks. These trades usually happen on Over-the-Counter platforms authorised by the RBI or through recognized exchange-traded segments of bourses. So what exactly is going on with forex trading platforms? And what has the RBI done about it? Mint's banking editor Gopika Gopakumar tackles those questions in today's Primer.Smartphone companies in India finally have some good news. The scramble for smartphones in the country, triggered by Covid-19 lockdowns ebbed back as the world returned to normal. However, the March quarter has ignited some hope in the hearts of smartphone manufacturers. This past March quarter, smartphone shipments rose by 5% year-over-year to somewhere between 32.5 to 35 million units, according to data from four industry analysts. It's a refreshing change, especially considering that back in the March quarter of 2021, shipments had peaked at 38 million units. Since then, there's been a bit of a slump. Mint's technology correspondent Shouvik Das reports on this turnaround which is especially crucial for big players like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo, who together made about $38.8 billion in sales in India last year. However, despite these positive signs, industry veterans are advising caution. The broader economic pressures still loom large, affecting consumer confidence. The market has also seen a shift toward refurbished and second-hand smartphones, thanks to the growth of organised retailers in this space. India is gearing up for the third phase of its airport privatisation plan. More airports are expected to see private stakeholders after the upcoming election. Officials close to the matter told Mint's aviation correspondent Anu Sharma of Airports Authority of India's plans to sell off its remaining 13 per cent stake in Bangalore International Airport Ltd . But that's not all — they're also planning to throw the doors open for private bids to manage, operate, and develop 13 other airports, including popular ones like Bhubaneswar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Amritsar, and Varanasi. There's also talk of selling stakes in Hyderabad airport. The authorities are planning to bundle six profitable airports with seven smaller, not-so-profitable ones like Kushinagar, Gaya, Hubballi, Aurangabad, Jabalpur, Tirupati, and Kangra. This mix and match might just make the deal more attractive to potential investors. This push towards privatisation is part of a bigger picture - India's National Monetisation Plan which was rolled out back in 2021. The plan is ambitious, aiming to privatise around 25 airports and offload airport authority's shares in big metro airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. The government is hoping to unlock 21,000 crore rupees from these sales between 2022 and 2025.Mid-budget movies, which really felt the pinch through Covid, are suddenly back in the spotlight. Judging by the impressive box office numbers of films like Crew, Shaitaan, and Article 370 it looks like affordable ticket prices and clever marketing are paying off. Let's talk numbers. The movie Crew, featuring stars like Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon, earned 77 crore rupees since its release at the end of March. Ajay Devgn's horror thriller Shaitaan pulled in a cool 148 crore rupees from early March, and the political drama Article 370 isn't far behind with 82 crore rupees since late February. Andthese films have all been profitable. Even though the Hindi box office saw a 25 per cent dip year-on-year in the last quarter of FY24, small and medium-budget films are making a stronger showing than they have since the pandemic began. They're now accounting for 30-35 per cent of box office receipts, up from just 12-15 per cent previously. Mint's media and entertainment correspondent Lata Jha reports on the resurgence of mid-budget bollywood movies and the changing landscape of Indian cinema. As tensions in West Asia heat up, there's a real concern that crude oil prices might just hit the roof, possibly soaring past $100 per barrel if things continue to escalate. This is a big deal not just globally, but especially for India's oil marketing companies, because hiking fuel prices during an election season is not a popular move. Now, high crude prices are already an issue for state-owned oil marketing companies because it squeezes the marketing margins – which is the difference between what it costs to make petrol or diesel and what they sell it for. Right now, those margins are pretty thin, about 5 rupees per litre for petrol and barely a rupee for diesel. If crude prices shoot up, these margins could get even tighter. Mint's energy correspondent Rituraj Baruah spoke to industry insiders and analysts to break down the ongoing problem for Indian oil marketing companies. Its founder hadn't tasted a burger before 2010. Now he's running a ₹100 crore ARR burger chain with 100+ locations. This is the story of Biggies Burger: Biraja Rout is from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He comes from a regular working-class family. In 2010 he got a job at Infosys, and briefly shifted to Mysuru for training: it was here that he tried his first burger. The experience had an unusually profound impact on him. After shifting to Bengaluru to work at Infosys' campus in Electronic City, Biraja borrowed ₹1.5 lakh from a friend and purchased a fabricated 5 sq. ft. booth. This was the first Biggies Burger location. He would man the booth after office hours and on weekends. Biraja was passionate about burgers but he had no business experience. From 2011 until 2015 he rarely had more than ₹1,000 in his bank account, and his motorcycle would often run out of petrol while he drove to Namdhari's to buy expensive, fresh lettuce for his burgers. Biggies Burger's second kiosk was set up in Bhubaneswar in 2012. Biraja would transport ingredients from Bengaluru via the Prasanthi Express train's AC chambers, as an affordable alternative to expensive cold chain logistics. He lost money on every Bhubaneswar burger sold. Biggies Burger became extremely popular in Bhubaneswar - it was essentially the only burger joint in a 200 kilometre radius. This caught the attention of Sandeep Satpathy, who approached Biraja about setting up a franchised location in Raipur in 2013. Raipur is a largely vegetarian city, and at this time the brand name was Biggies Burger ‘n' More. One of their secondary product lines were hot dogs, which were made of chicken meat. These meat products were underperforming in Raipur, and so Biraja decided to create a veg option. However, due to a lack of quality veg hot dog products in the Indian market, Biraja wasn't impressed and decided to import hot dogs instead, sourcing them from Malaysia. These hot dogs equated to a loss of ₹860 per kilo. Biraja sustained this loss for several years. By 2016, the business was still in a financially precarious position, owing between ₹18-20 lakh to various vendors. During this time, on any given day, Biggies Burger was ₹10,000 away from collapse, and when Biraja got married in 2016, he couldn't afford to buy a blazer. Biraja's fortunes finally turned when a master territory franchise was established and four franchisees paid their fees in rapid succession. Suddenly, Biraja and Biggies were out of debt. By the end of 2016, Biggies had 18 locations. In 2016, Sandeep Satpathy joined Biggies burger as a co-founder, along with Abilash Bellur, who had purchased the Electronic City location in 2013 as a franchisee. Abilash Bellur took on operations, Sandeep spearheaded business development, and Biraja focused on R&D. From 2016 onwards, the business was able to achieve financial stability. Biggies' parent company, Beamer Food and Beverages, also launched a new subsidiary brand, Bigguy's Wingery, to compete with KFC in the chicken QSR space. Today, Biggies has 124 locations, and is doing annualised revenue of ₹100 crore.

I have been writing this blog for the past nine years on Hinduism, Indian philosophy , it's traditions, literature, diversity, advanced scientific concepts in ancient times, it's presence throughout the world and architecture. And I have traveled widely in India, especially Temples. But I was awestruck by a book written by a foreigner in the eighteenth century on the Great temples of India. I have provided the Link to the book towards the close of the article. I am humbled at my ignorance of my own Culture and Religion. I have been under the impression that temples abound in South India when compared to North India. And Kancheepuram,Tamil Nadu is called the City of temples. And Kumbakonam. But the city that had over one thousand temples is, Bhubaneswar/Cuttack. Most of the temples have been demolished by the Mughals. What remains is only a miniscule. To point,I have been able to find a list of about 54 Temples in Bhubaneswar now. What happened to the others? Will someone from Odisha enlighten me with a List of Temples? I plan to write on each of them. One must remember that Kalinga was a region dating back to 25,000 years. I have written on this. Some points o found in the Book I mentioned are quite new to me. 1.Bhubaneswar has more Shiva temples. 2.There is a temple for Yama and for Parasirameshwar. 3. The Bisveswara temple used twenty two ceremonies a day to the Deity. 4. In this temple, Shiva is informed at night before closing the Garbhagruha, ‘Parvati Awaits you' I recall about temple accounts being read to Madurai Meenakshi Every night. Information about temples requested. We do not seem to know even the existing temples. Less said about the demolished temples, the better. Those who have information, photos of temples that were destroyed, I will be grateful. It is our duty to keep our. Younger generation informed about our glorious heritage. https://ramanisblog.in/2019/01/09/parvati-awaits-you-bhubaneswar-city-of-thousand-temples/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

Soon you may relish your favorite biryani, momos or coffee within ten minutes of ordering them. Zomato on Monday promised to deliver food in the tight time frame even before it loses its steam, arguably becoming the first company in the world to do so. Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal feared that 30-minute food delivery time was too slow. And, if they do not make it obsolete, someone else will. So, what does it mean for the food delivery ecosystem? Is there a demand for quick food delivery? It's not just the food delivery segment. The winds of change are blowing through the IT sector too. Tech companies are increasingly venturing into smaller cities in search of talents. And they are finding many. Not just that, these IT majors are also setting up offices in cities like Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and Jaipur. Meanwhile, IT stocks helped benchmark indices rebound into positive zone yesterday. But, how will the markets behave over the next few days against the backdrop of the rise in fuel prices? How analysts are interpreting the recent moves and what they think about inflation and its impact on market sentiment? After the markets, let us move on to the Russia-Ukraine war which entered 28th day today. On 19th of March, Russia is said to have used hypersonic missiles, called Kinzhal, or Dagger in English, to destroy a weapons depot in Ukraine's western region. According to media reports, this was the first recorded use of such missiles in this war. So, what are hypersonic missiles? Take a peek into this nuclear-capable weapons system in this episode of the podcast. Watch video

Playwrights and artists Amitesh Grover and Purva Naresh create art that challenges their audience to think and Indian society to confront uncomfortable truths. They share what inspires them and what they see as the threats to freedom of expression in India today. Writer Annie Zaidi talks about her new book, City of Incident, and the uncertain position of vocal, visible women in contemporary India. And celebrated folk singer Malini Awasthi reveals the art that changed her life and set her on a mission to ensure that traditional songs, culture and languages survive as India evolves. She was performing at the Kalinga Literary Festival in Bhubaneswar in association with the British Council. Presenter: Anu Anand Producer: Paul Waters (Photo: The Indian flag.
