What is it doing for your business? Is it your whole business as an influencer? Or simply a marketing tool? You then have to think about: What content am I creating? Who is creating it?  Who owns it? If you’re creating it yourself, then you own it. If someone else is creating it for you, you have to make sure you still own it. You must only use other people’s content with permission. It’s intellectual property that is copyrighted. You need a general understanding of copyright rules.  The dos and don’ts of inspiration posts How should you handle inspiration posts? Jamie’s “lawyer” answer is that you cannot share anyone’s content that you do not have permission to share. Attribution is NOT the same as permission. If you want to use someone else’s content—ask them if you can share it. Sharing on an Instagram story is fine because it’s sharing their content. But a lot of people copy and paste someone else's work and put it in an original post—which is NOT okay. You have to be careful about how you’re using someone else’s content.  Photographers have become very sensitive about this. Their images get shared and used without their permission over and over again—and many aren’t standing for it anymore. Jamie had a client with over a million followers on their Facebook page. He posted a photo—with attribution—that led to a protracted fight. He just said it was a beautiful photo and wasn’t trying to monetize it, but the bottom line is that he didn’t have permission.  DMCA Takedown Notice If you are the owner of the image, you have the right to require someone to remove it—even if you haven’t registered a copyright. By nature, when you create an original work, it’s yours. So how do you handle it? Collaborative negotiation. Unless there’s a contentious background, reach out without a lawyer. You can simply send an email and request they take down your image. If that doesn’t work, you can file a DMCA Takedown Notice. All of the social media networks can do it. If you own copyright protected material and someone is using it without permission, you can file the notice. It’s the same with a website host. It gets it done. But what if your end goal is monetary compensation? Jamie points out that it’s more difficult to get monetary damages without a copyright registration. If you have it, you may be eligible for damages. You can send the demand yourself or have your lawyer help you. But at the end of the day, you have to question what your end goal is. Jamie emphasizes that “Your intellectual property is only as strong as you’re willing to protect it.” If someone is infringing on that, Jamie recommends asking them to take it down.  How do you claim ownership of your own work on Facebook? Concerns about Kanye West's mental health increased Sunday following a bizarre campaign-style rally in which he made shocking comments about abortion and slavery.  Included in Kanye's comments were thoughts such as: “Harriet Tubman never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people.”  West started sobbing as he spoke about having urged wife Kim Kardashian to have an abortion when she was pregnant with their first child, North. “I almost killed my daughter,” he said. “Even if my wife were to divorce me after this speech, she brought North into the world, even when I didn't want to.” The rally was an attempt to collect the 10,000 signatures West needs to get his name on the ballot in South Carolina by noon Monday. In his philanthropic life Jason has been a volunteer with numerous worthy organizations including Special Olympics since 1982 serving on its State Games Committee for five years.  Jason has served over 6000 hours as a volunteer with Los Angeles County since 2001.  Jason is a certified FEMA Emergency Program Manager and is well versed in disaster management with an emphasis on streamlining communication for major incidents.  He has authored and instituted numerous training programs, taught by himself and others to agencies throughout the County of Los Angeles and created, developed, and executed the training protocols for and led the Rapid Response Team based at the LA County Emergency Operations Bureau. Jason is a graduate of the FBI and DEA Citizens Academy and a member of InfraGard.  He assisted with the launch of the DEA Museum Target America and the creation of the DEA Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association.  His service and dedication has been acknowledged with awards from the State of California Senate, California Senate Public Safety Committee, FBI, DEA, LA Sheriff’s Department, American Red Cross, the City of Long Beach and the City of Carson.  Tucker was honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. El programa de hoy comienza discutiendo un correo en el que uno de nuestros oyentes tiene un iPad nuevecito y quiere instalarle la música que tenía en su iPad anterior. De ahí pasamos a hablar de un libro excelente que estoy leyendo y cómo se relaciona con lo que he postulado anteriormente en el programa. De ahí pasamos a hablar de Ray Tomlinson, el que propuso utilizar el símbolo de arroba para separar el nombre del usuario del nombre del servidor en el correo electrónico. Este invento, aparentemente sencillo, hizo posible los sistemas de correo electrónico como los conocemos hoy en día. También hablamos del primer caso de ransomware en la plataforma Macintosh de Apple. Distinto a lo que mucha gente piensa, las Macintosh no son inmunes a los virus de computadoras. Hay otras razones que hacen que la mayoría de los virus de computadora ataquen la plataforma Windows de Microsoft. Y lo curioso es que en la mayoría de las empresas no existen los protocolos ni el conocimiento para protegerse de estos ataques. No porque no cuenten con los recursos, sino porque no están dispuestos a invertir en un renglón que es clave para cualquier empresa. Y como dice el refrán: “éramos muchos y parió la abuela”. Como si no fuera suficiente con los peligros que presentan los virus de computadora  para la gente y las empresas, ahora resulta que las violaciones a derechos de autor se han duplicado, según nos dice la gente de Google. Entérate de lo que puedes hacer para proteger tu contenido. Por su parte, la gente de Apple acaba de anunciar su nuevo servicio al cliente a través de Twitter en @AppleSupport.
