Passivation is Essential for Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. It is also known as rustles steel or corrosion-resistant steel. It contains at minimum of 10.5 % chromium and usually nickel, and may also contain other elements, such as carbon, to obtain the desired properties. Stainless steel's resistance to corrosion results from the chromium, which forms a passive film that can protect the material and self-heal in the presence of oxygen. The biological cleanability of stainless steel is superior to both aluminum and copper, and comparable to glass. Its cleanability, strength, and corrosion resistance have prompted the use of stainless steel in pharmaceutical and food processing plants. This is the reason why stainless steel is the ideal material for all brewing equipment.Passivation is coating a material so that it becomes "passive", that is, less readily affected or corroded by the environment. During passivation an outer layer of shield material is created as a micro-coating, created by chemical reaction with the base material, or allowed to build by spontaneous oxidation in the air. As a technique, passivation is the use of a light coat of a protective material, such as metal oxide, to create a protective shield against corrosion. What happens during the passivation? What methods of passivation are available and what are the advantages and disadvantages? What tests are possible to ensure a solid passivation layer? These questions and more will be answered in the presentation.Oliver is the Technical Director of the Brewing Division and consultant for Zee Loeffler. He studied at the University of Munich, graduating with a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Brewing Science at the Berlin Institute of Technology where he received his second Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering. He spent 7 years at the VLB (Research and Teaching Institute for Brewing in Berlin) as a Project Manager followed by 7 years at the Berlin Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor. Regarded as part of the "Holy Trinity" along with Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin's dressy watches are among the best out there. Ep 292: Stainless Steel Benchies, Lego Turing Machines, and a Digital Camera Made of Pure DIY

Here we are in October, improbably enough, and while the leaves start to fall as the goblins begin to gather, Elliot and Dan took a break from the madness to talk about all the wonderful hacks that graced our pages this week. If there was a theme this week, it was long-term projects, like the multiple years one hacker spent going down dead ends in the quest for DIY metal 3D printing. Not to be outdone, another hacker spent seven years building a mirrorless digital camera that looks like a commercial product. And getting a solderless PCB to do the blinkenlight thing took a long time too. Looking to eliminate stringing in your 3D prints? Then you'll want to avoid the "pause and attach" approach, which intentionally creates strings in your prints. Wondering if you can 3D print bearings? You can, but you probably shouldn't unless you have a particular use in mind. And what happens when you have an infinitely large supply of Lego? Why, you build a Turing machine on steroids, of course. Finally, we take a look at this week's "Can't-Miss" articles with a look into plastic recycling and why we can't have nice things yet, and we take a trip out into orbit and examine the ins and outs of Lagrange points. And a little mea culpa from the editing desk: Sorry the podcast is coming out late this week. Audacity ate my files. If you're ever in a similar circumstance, you can probably halfway save your bacon with audacity-project-tools. Ask me how I know. Check out the links over at Hackaday.

The top of the 9 by 13-inch print starts boldly with the state name NEBRASKA and underneath it is spelled also in braille. Underneath the word NEBRASKA is the entire state outline of Nebraska exactly like a map. The only difference from a map is on the left side of the state there's a white cane instead of a straight line and on the northwestern border there is another white cane instead of a line. At the end of the strap of the white cane, the map continues along the river as it naturally would. The river continues all the way down to the southeast border of the state. In the middle of the west side of the state are the historic rolling sand hills, which are covered by prairie grasses. These sand hills are replicated by small wavy tactile hills as a nod to this critical and historic portion of the state, which supports the cattle industry. Starting in the middle to the right side of the print are three huge stalks of corn. [13:42] Is there any sort of advantage[difference] between the 1/4npt and 1/8npt port sizes for the valves?  [15:39] Discuss  the significance / difference between Brass and Stainless-Steel valve bodies. [17:26] Considerations when using fittings on Alta Robbins [20:39] On the website, one the defining features of Alta Robbins is the following statement "The Difference is in the Seat" Could you help me and the audience understand why that is so important to the design? [26:21] How does Alta Robbins ensure the reliability and durability of its valves in both high-vacuum and high-pressure environments? What is the 4-to-1 safety factor? [29:25] One of the qualities that I adamire is that Alta Robbins Valves are simple to service. When is it recommended to replace individual parts of a valve versus replacing the entire unit to maintain optimal performance? [34:51] Troubleshooting or explaination for the feeling like having to make more turns on the valve before seeing the metering of gas. [37:58] Greg elaborates on a built in safety feature that better explains why it takes more that one turn before opening the valve. [41:41] There's an arrow on the outside of the valve, and the question that you have been asked before was like, does it matter the direction of that valve in its use? [45:40] Soft Goods Kit vs Bonnet Assembly, when do you replace parts and when to buy a new valve? [49:50] What is Alta Robbins thoughts on partnering with Taming Lightning? [52:13] A fun fact from Greg Wilson and his thoughts on and service to neon.

These color trends are gone, never to return I hope. Typical proximity sensors can detect different types of metals, but all with very different detection ranges. The range for copper can be up to 70% less than the maximum range of a sensor. The range can even vary slightly between different types of the same metal, for example, mild steel or carbon steel. Reduction Factor 1 sensors have multiple sensing coils that work together to detect multiple metals in the same range. Combined with IO-Link, this provides a sensor with unmatched flexibility that can be configured for many applications. Christopher Corker's The Business and Technology of the Sheffield Armaments Industry, 1900-1930 (U of York, 2016) focuses on four in-depth case studies of John Brown, Cammell-Laird, Thomas Firth and Hadfields to examine the business and technology of the industry. It builds on the work of Tweedale and Trebilcock on Sheffield and armaments, and advances the argument that during the period of study from 1900 to 1930, the city was one of the most important centres for armaments research and production anywhere in the world. The business of the armaments industry is explored through an examination of the evolving links the industry had with the Government against the backdrop of an uncertain trading environment, and the managerial connections established between the state and private industry. Also explored are the collaborative, collusive and independent defensive measures enacted by the industry to counter uncertainty in the industry, through collaborative business arrangements and various approaches to entering international markets for armaments. An examination of the business of the armaments industry also highlights the value of the technological investment made by the industry. At the centre of exploring the technology of the armaments industry, a reconstruction of its technological history is undertaken using patent and archival records, highlighting the nuances and research dead-ends of development in the industry. Of central importance is the notion of spin-off and the interactions between armaments and metallurgical developments in the creation of a pool of knowledge to be utilised for future research into alloy steels, and the notion of path-dependent technological research. Also advanced is the concept of an innovation system centred on Sheffield, and an exploration of the important national and international links advanced by the industry This title is available open access here.  Chris is a business historian, and Lecturer in Management at the School for Business and Society at the University of York, where he is a former Director of Undergraduate Programmes. He completed his PhD in 2016, and won the 2017 Coleman Prize from the Association of Business Historians for excellence in new business history research, and an Emerald Literati Prize in 2019. His current research is on innovation and knowledge in industrial clusters, in particular the business and intellectual history of Stainless Steel, which has been supported by a small grant from the Business Archives Council. Outside of academia Chris is an advisor to Sheffield Archives, member of the Joined Up Heritage Sheffield Partnership Board, and former Chair of Portland Works Little Sheffield, a social enterprise housed in a 19th Century cutlery works. His work has also been featured on BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking. The host emphasizes the pervasive presence of plastic in our daily lives, including in our food, salt, and air. Of particular concern are microplastics, tiny particles of plastic that can be found in various types of food. The urgent need to halt the production and distribution of plastic is underscored as a crucial step in addressing this issue. Plastic pollution is described as a universal problem that affects everyone, regardless of gender, race, culture, religion, or age. While the immediate effects may not be apparent, the long-term consequences can be detrimental to our well-being. The episode stresses the importance of taking action to combat plastic pollution and highlights Canada's efforts in implementing a ban on single-use plastic items such as straws, grocery bags, and takeout containers. However, this ban in Canada faces potential challenges due to a recent court ruling that dismissed the classification of plastic as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This setback is seen as a significant obstacle in the fight against plastic pollution. The episode raises questions about how the government will respond to these challenges and emphasizes the ongoing need for collective efforts to address plastic pollution and safeguard both the environment and human health. The episode also mentions that the Canadian government is aware of the plastic pollution crisis and is actively considering taking action. The host states that the government is carefully reviewing a federal court judgment and strongly considering an appeal. Additionally, they highlight the government's commitment to collaborating with provinces, territories, civil society, and industry to tackle plastic waste and pollution. The host emphasizes the urgency for the government to overcome the challenges posed by plastic pollution and take decisive action. It is evident that the Canadian government is cognizant of the issue and actively working towards finding solutions to address the plastic pollution crisis. Oceana Canada is mentioned as an organization calling on industry leaders and governments across the country to join forces in ending plastic pollution at its source. The podcast transcript highlights Oceana Canada's plea for action and support from industry leaders and governments in their fight against plastic pollution. The host encourages listeners to visit Oceana Canada's page to learn more about their plastic campaign. Furthermore, the host expresses their intention to invite a representative from Oceana Canada to discuss the setback in detail on the podcast. The overall message conveyed is that Oceana Canada is actively engaged in efforts to end plastic pollution and seeks support from industry leaders and governments to achieve this crucial goal.
