Today's show dives into the fallout and the spin over the last 72 hours since the CNN debate where Joe Biden had a disastrous evening. We open with a reminder of what the media was projecting ahead of time, suggesting Biden was going to easily defeat Trump. We then look at the fallout and the discussions across Legacy/mainstream media, Democrat leaders and the strategy of the Bidens, specifically Jill and Hunter, moving forward. We also discuss the First Lady and the timing of being on the cover of Vogue magazine. It looks like Joe Biden is once again finding a way to blame everyone but himself for why he did so poorly. And, begrudgingly, some of the MSM is trying to move toward the narrative of, it was just a bad night, but that's not who Joe really is. To remind you how history really does repeat itself, there are eerie parallels between the Biden regime and that of Woodrow Wilson in the last 20's. In fact, we even know how, much like Jill, Edith Wilson his her husband's debilitating stroke, becoming the de facto president, signing his name to letters and legislation in his stead. We do hit on the Supreme Court's decision that presidents do, in fact, have immunities from criminal prosecution. The have absolute immunity when it comes to the powers specifically mentioned in the Constitution. They have presumed immunity for the actions of their office. However, they have no immunity for actions outside of their office. As a result, the very Leftists who are screaming about “saving our Democracy” have gone all-in on Biden needing to order an assassination of the former president and a military takeover of government. The derangement out there is very real and it is very dangerous. Finally, we look at a cringe-worthy production coming out of the office of the Vice President. VP Kamala Harris is once again having to pander to a block of the Democrat base and it is awful to watch. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. On March 7, 2024, biographer Rebecca Boggs Roberts provided an unflinching look at First Lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. While this nation has yet to elect its first female president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation's first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. She climbed her way out of Appalachian poverty and into the highest echelons of American power and in 1919 effectively acted as the first female president of the United States when her husband, Woodrow Wilson, was incapacitated. Beautiful, brilliant, charismatic, catty, and calculating, she was a complicated figure whose personal quest for influence reshaped the position of First Lady into one of political prominence forever. Rebecca Boggs Roberts offered an unflinching look at the woman whose ascent mirrors that of many powerful American women before and since, one full of the compromises and complicities women have undertaken throughout time in order to find security for themselves and make their mark on history. Rebecca Boggs Roberts is an award-winning educator, author, and speaker, and a leading historian of American women's suffrage and civic participation. She is currently deputy director of events at the Library of Congress and serves on the board of the National Archives Foundation, on the Council of Advisors of the Women's Suffrage National Monument Foundation, and on the Editorial Advisory Committee of the White House Historical Association. Her books include the award-winning The Suffragist Playbook: Your Guide to Changing the World; Suffragists in Washington, D.C.: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote; and Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson. The Twenty-Fifth Hour is the 1950 novel by the Romanian writer C. Virgil Gheorghiu that weaves a tangled, early post-modern tale of central Europe and the Balkans in World War II. It is justly forgotten today, but the title is back in a manner of speaking because it highlights the great irony of the Left's Ahab-like pursuit of the Great Orange Whale (to mix literary references). Anyone else recall back in 2017 how a concerted mob of concerned citizens suggested the presidential disability clause of the 25th Amendment be invoked to remove President Trump from office? Think of it as a 25th Hour moment. This week ended with the 25th Hour being invoked to remove Joe Biden from office because of his obvious and rapidly advancing senility. Yet one more example of how a strategy to get Trump, like the Me Too movement, has circled around like a rogue torpedo to explode in the face of the Left. The week began with such promise for the anti-Trump crusade. The walls were closing in on the breaking dam that would drown the freshly roosting chickens! Bam: no immunity for you! And the Supreme Court might allow Trump to be banned from the ballot! Except that didn't go according to script. And then the report of the greatest Hur since Ben Hur, declaring that Biden isn't competent to stand trial for the very same "willful" crime for which Trump is being prosecuted, but is somehow competent to remain president? The Left should have taken a lesson from those failed exploding cigars they tried to use on Castro 60 years ago.But about that disability clause in the 25th Amendment: we take a closer look, and note that Section 4 in particular is not as clear cut and simple as it sounds. Meaning we're likely stuck so long as Edith Wilson. . ., er, we mean, DOCTOR Jill Biden has anything to say about it.And finally, we close out this week's epsiode with happy 64th birthday wishes to Lucretia, so the exit bumper music is fairly predictable, isn't it? (Though I chose a rendition from an obscure artist just to annoy this week's host!)

Edith Wilson's influence transcended the traditional role of First Lady.  She navigated the corridors of power with grace, resilience, and determination. Edith Wilson captured the heart of President Woodrow Wilson, but her life took an unexpected turn when her husband suffered a debilitating stroke during his second term, leaving him incapacitated. Unbeknownst to many, Edith would rise to the occasion, becoming the de facto steward of the nation in a time of crisis. She managed the executive branch from behind closed doors, screening documents, making decisions, and even interacting with Cabinet members on behalf of the President. Has the United States ever had a female president? An easy question to answer. Has it ever had an ‘acting' female President? Harder to answer. Check out Rebecca Boggs Roberts' very readable biography of Edith Wilson, Woodrow Wilson's second wife, and make up your own mind. The book is Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson. Following her husband's stroke in 1919, Edith Wilson decided, for reasons she thought critical to her husband's well-being, to hide the extent of his incapacities from the public, from the press, from Congress, from his cabinet, even from Wilson himself. She assumed some of the powers of the office herself. Could a First Lady get away with such audacity today in the age of social media and intense news media scrutiny? Not a chance. Was her self-justification reasonable? All those questions are what makes Edith Wilson such a complex and controversial character and a worthy subject for Rebecca Boggs Roberts. Edith Wilson dated and then married Woodrow Wilson while he served as president of the United States in 1915. In her new biography, Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson, author Rebecca Boggs Roberts – daughter of the late NPR founding mother Cokie Roberts – explores Wilson's influential role in her husband's administration. But as Roberts tells NPR's Steve Inskeep, at a time when women didn't yet have the right to vote, Wilson often hid her political contributions from the spotlight.

The United States may well have had its first female president already. The problem? Nobody knew it. After President Woodrow Wilson suffered a devastating stroke in October 1919, his wife, First Lady Edith Wilson, became acting president until his second term ended on March 4, 1921. Today we talk about that decision and the woman who was Edith Wilson, who was acting president before women even had the right to vote. Though it seems Rebecca Boggs Roberts has had every job under the sun, a connecting thread runs through them all: each one was a form of storytelling. The deputy director of events at the Library of Congress and author of Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson joins Julie in this episode to talk about finding the beauty and wonder of words, her job at the Library of Congress, and her dream dinner party (which would include plenty of hot goss). Edith Wilson: The First Unelected Woman President - Rebecca Boggs Roberts The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview for Women's History initiative on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and we have an excellent program about Women's History, power, and Edith Wilson, wife of Pres. Woodrow Wilson.  Our returning guest is Smithsonian Associate, journalist, and author Rebecca Boggs Roberts, who has written the new book, Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson by Rebecca Boggs Roberts I'll introduce Rebecca Boggs Roberts in just a moment, but quickly, if you missed any shows recently, last week was our 699th episode I spoke with #1 NYT bestselling author Mark Greaney about his new book, part of The Gray Man series, “Burner,” already a bestseller. Two weeks ago, I spoke with author and journalist Philip Bump about his new book,  “The Aftermath: the Last Days of the Baby Boom and the Future of Power in America”  Wonderful subjects for our Not Old Better Show audience…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you, there on our website, NotOld-Better.com Our guest today is Smithsonian Associate, author, and journalist Rebecca Boggs Roberts.  Rebecca Boggs Roberts will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out details of her Zoom presentation in our show notes today.  The title of Rebecca Boggs Roberts' presentation is Edith Wilson: The First (Unelected) Woman President.  While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation's first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. She climbed her way out of Appalachian poverty and into the highest echelons of American power and in 1919 effectively acted as the first woman president of the U.S. (before women could even vote nationwide) when her husband, Woodrow Wilson, was incapacitated. Beautiful, brilliant, charismatic, catty, and calculating, she was a complicated figure whose personal quest for influence reshaped the position of First Lady into one of political prominence forever. And still nobody truly understands who she was. You'll enjoy our conversation today with Rebecca Boggs Roberts, so please join me in welcoming back to  The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview for Women's History initiative on radio and podcast, Smithsonian Associate Rebecca Boggs Roberts. My thanks to author, journalist and  Smithsonian Associate Rebecca Boggs Roberts and her new book, Edith Wilson: The First (Unelected) Woman President. Rebecca Boggs Roberts will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes today for more details about Rebecca Boggs Roberts at Smithsonian Associates. My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show. My thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience on radio and podcast…please be well and be safe, which I'm mentioning in every show because I want to bring attention to the issue of assault rifles, which aren't safe, in anyone's hands but the military and law enforcement.  Assault rifles are killing our children and grandchildren in the very places they learn: schools!  Please, let's work together to eliminate assault rifles, and let's do better.  Let's talk about Better…the Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast,  The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview for Women's History initiative .  For more details, please check out: https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/edith-wilson
