Physical movement + mental stimulation combined, plus food, sleep and motivation. I know you're all busy and might only read the first paragraph so I'll summarise what I can from the interview here, but of course, please do listen / watch the interview as you'll get so much more from the conversation between my guests.  The core takeaways from our experts for boosting both lifespan and healthspan: - Challenge your brain: Aim for tasks you succeed at 70 - 80% of the time. - Move with purpose of thought: Combine high-intensity bursts with cognitive challenges. - Food: Favour a Mediterranean-style diet rich in plants, healthy fats, and quality protein. - Sleep: Aim for 7 - 9 hours nightly, prioritising quality as much as quantity. - Stay motivated: Choose activities you actually enjoy; consistency is key. It's one thing to live a long life. It's another to live it well: physically sharp, mentally agile, and emotionally engaged. This week on The Lisa Burke Show, my guests are three leaders in neuroscience, nutrition, and biohacking who share the latest, evidence-based ways to extend your health span. Professor Thorben Hülsdünker is a performance neuroscientist and sport neurophysiologist at LUNEX. His research bridges the gap between how the brain and body adapt to training, with practical insights for everyone from elite athletes to ‘normal' adults looking to stay sharp. Myriam Jacobs, a sports and clinical dietitian, now works full-time with the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sport. With a career spanning hospital work in diabetes and obesity to elite sports nutrition, she knows what fuels what is needed for each individual body and at what time of day. Manlio Lo Giudice is a mechanical engineer turned human potential coach, trainer, biohacker, and co-founder of MobiGym: Luxembourg's first longevity fitness studio. He's hosted longevity meetups around the globe, spoken with pioneers like Bryan Johnson and Aubrey de Grey, and tested countless self-optimisation strategies on himself. Professor Hülsdünker starts by reminding us that, evolutionarily, our brains weren't designed to last beyond 50. That's why natural cognitive decline is so common in later life, but not inevitable. Just as we strengthen muscles, we can train the brain. Thorben does not like most of the “brain training” apps as they rarely translate into real-life benefits. He believes in a blend of movement and mental challenges. That's why ball sports, dance, or running whilst solving mental puzzles are best to produce the growth factors that keep neurons thriving. Sleep is another silent superpower. Beyond memory consolidation, deep sleep clears away toxins that can accelerate dementia risk. Shift workers and those with irregular schedules face added challenges, making sleep quality crucial to their health. From the kitchen, Myriam made the case for the Mediterranean way of eating which is not a diet but a lifestyle rich in plants, nuts, olive oil, fish, and limited red meat. On wine, the advice is still moving. Protein does matter, but so does the timing of its intake. As we age we should spread it across the day for optimal absorption. Manlio brought the biohacker's perspective, drawing on the Pareto Principle: 80% of the benefits often come from 20% of our actions. He suggests to focus on the minimum effective dose of exercise to trigger adaptation, avoid chronic stress, and use short, sharp challenges to strengthen both brain and body. Fasting, done wisely, can act as a beneficial stressor, stimulating cellular ‘clean-up' processes like autophagy, but should be tailored to individual needs and lifestyles. When it comes to the whole array of technological devices we can use or wear, Professor Hülsdünker suggests that even if they're not accurate, they might be able to show trends. The whole industry around longevity and all of the apps available to us to track, monitor alter are there if this aids your motivation, but motivation is another large part of what we need it order to develop habits. If you can find a way to physically move whilst using your brain, and eat ‘well' for your body and its needs, do this with a supportive social circle… then you're on your way to living a good and long life. https://www.linkedin.com/in/thorbenhuelsduenker/ https://lunex.lu/ https://lihps.lu/what-we-offer/sports-nutrition/ https://lihps.lu/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/manlio-lo-giudice-a8b7773/

K: “Community is so important. To knowing you're not alone and then showing up for each other. H: 100 percent. K: even when a situation is scary and people are thinking about their own situations of course but also thinking about their loved ones and their neighbours. H: We will only survive this with community. We will only survive this together. We will only survive this by showing up for each other. That is our only way out. This is an exchange between sister/co-host Kerry and friend and returning guest Professor H Mayhem May on this week's show. We're continuing the celebrating of PRIDE on Outlook this week, as we did almost exactly to the day (three years ago) when May was on with us that first time to share about their short film, “Finding Tiresias”, an inclusively designed experimental piece about identity and diversity and change. Ozzy Osbourne, legendary rock performer died since having H May on this time. In his band's song “Changes” he sings: “I'm going through changes”. This is the theme of our second discussion, live in studio, with H from just across the border in The Finger Lakes region of New York State. Canada and the States both celebrate birthdays during the month of July along with Pride and Disability Pride, just within a few days of one another, as we're right next to each other. We're illustrating the need to recognise that closeness and connection and that need to keep connections between us strong in the face of so much chaos and adversity, both as neighbouring countries and in overlapping communities. So we're talking interconnection, intersectionality, and interdependence along with examples of loss and grief and accepting of changes as H considers a guide dog for continued outdoor adventures, keeping up blindness skills in an ocularcentric world since being in community with us and others at a Drama Club Camp week in Maine, and in the expanding possibilities developing the ideas from last year's Maine gathering into a future inclusive and representative theatrical statement with Dr. May's growing lived experience and directing stage knowledge and expertise at its heart. For more on our friend and ally Professor H May, visit their website and learn more about “Finding Tiresias” and other projects and perspectives: https://www.drheathermay.com Check out last summer's Maine experience on the two-parter episode we put together featuring our week in community with H and others: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2024-10-14-our-week-in-maine-well-figure-it-out-pt-1/id1527876739?i=1000673780980 https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2024-10-21-our-week-in-maine-well-figure-it-out-pt-2/id1527876739?i=1000675516532 And go back 3 years to hear H's first appearance on the show: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2022-07-11-awaiting-tiresias-with-professor/id1527876739?i=1000569782476

They discuss his book America First: Roosevelt vs. Lindbergh in the Shadow of War (New York: Doubleday, 2024) touching on what drew him to the subject of the America First movement, the nature of the national debate on radio from 1939-1941, the transformation of the nation's default foreign policy of non-interventionism to globalism, the role of the Congressional fight over repealing the Neutrality Acts, Lindbergh's racialized thinking and anti-semitism, how the speech he gave in Des Moines at an America First rally in fall 1941 destroyed his national image and reputation, Lindbergh's personal character (and his multiple affairs with German women in the last twenty years of his life, the transition in elite thinking from hemispheric defense to a global posture of forward defense, the British and German influence operations to shape American public opinion before Pearl Harbor and the contemporary overtones of Lindbergh's non-interventionism, focus on future technology, and political naivete that are visible in Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My top 10 picks from 200 episodes of the 80k podcast, published by JWS on September 9, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Intro I think the 80,000 Hours Podcast is a great show. Despite the world of podcasts overflowing with content to choose from, it's reliably been a high-quality production that's been a regular part of my listening habits ever since I discovered it. It was also probably one of the first routes I become more aware of the EA community, which I suspect I might not be alone by.[1] So, as the podcast numbers ticked up, the vague idea to write up a post shouting out some of my favourite episodes took root. I didn't get far with it from there, and now the unreasonable effectiveness of the 80k podcast production team has forced my hand! So in the post I'm going to link to my 10 favourite episodes, along with some final thoughts at the end. I hope to share with you some of my favourite episodes, but I want to be clear that this is my list and not any sort of official ranking. If there's a really good episode that your surprised isn't on there, it may well because I haven't listened to that one yet! So, without any further ado, here's the Top 10 List: My Top 10 10-4 10: #144 - Athena Aktipis on why cancer is actually one of the fundamental phenomena in our universe While the podcast's title is nominally about cancer, I think the ideas in the podcast actually hint towards Autopoiesis, something I think connects a bunch of different causes I care about. I wasn't really aware of many of the things that Athena and Rob discuss in the episode so I found the discussing incredibly interesting, especially about how the concepts of growth, maintenance, and co-operation appear at many different levels in the universe. 9: #175 - Lucia Coulter on preventing lead poisoning for $1.66 per child LEEP is probably one of the key EA success stories in recent years but hearing it through Lucia's own words and her own story, from CE incubation to actually bringing the results of lead concentration to the Malawi Ministry of Health, was really inspiring to hear. There's also some good discussion about the 10% Pledge and the age-old Randomista v Growth debate in the episode too. 8: #139 - Alan Hájek on puzzles and paradoxes in probability and expected value This was another excellent episode where Rob and an incredbily smart, engaging guest got to do a deep dive into an idea and see where it went. I think Professor Hájek did a fantastic job sharing his knowledge in an enlightening way, and he really showcased a number of limits of expect value calculations (not least the realisation the probability(0) events can and do happen all the time) which left my mind blown in a good way. 7: #153 - Elie Hassenfeld on two big picture critiques of GiveWell's approach, and six lessons from their recent work GiveWell looms large in the world of EA, so to get the CEO to come on the podcast and talk in this detail was great to see. I found Elie both an engaging guest and a persuasive interlocutor when he and Rob get into debates, and this definitely didn't seem like a softball interview to me. The Randomista v Growth section (at 02:20:00) is really good on this, and I wish Rob had actually put himself on the line a bit more since he clearly has a lot of sympathy with the 'Growth' side of the debate. 6: #129 - Dr James Tibenderana on the state of the art in malaria control and elimination This podcast comes in at over 3 hours, but still I found it flying by as a listener. The topics range from the specific work of Maleria Consortium, the overall landscape of the battle against Malaria, as well as James' own story, including fighting off the disease himself. There's some much rich discussion that it feels like any of these could have been an episode on its own, so to get all 3-in-1 firmly puts th...
