Mary Beth Cicero, co-founder of Three Daughters, shares how her passion for women's health led to the development of a new frameless, self-assembling magnetic IUD designed to significantly reduce the pain of insertion and retrieval. The device, inspired by embryo transfer techniques and using copper as its active ingredient, aims to improve comfort, eliminate strings, and offer a more body-conforming contraceptive option—especially for younger women deterred by current IUDs. As the product moves through clinical trials, the team is focused on both efficacy and ease of use, with hopes to expand into treating other uterine conditions in the future.

Director Azazel Jacobs discusses his new film, His Three Daughters, with fellow Director David Zellner in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses how his personal experiences informed the film, working with his cast to capture performances against their usual types, and shooting scenes in the same order as they happen in the film to allow the performances to evolve with the story. The film tells the story of Katie, Christina and Rachel, who reunite for the first time in many years at their dying father's New York City apartment. Over the course of three claustrophobic days, the sisters unearth past grievances, traumas and hang-ups as they learn to coexist before their father's departure. Azazel Jacobs' HIS THREE DAUGHTERS is, like Tamara Jenkins' THE SAVAGES, a film about the heartbreaking experience of caring for an aging parent, but even more so it is, also like the other film in the pairing, about adult siblings reuniting and renegotiating their relationships under those fraught conditions. We're decidedly more mixed on Jacobs' film, however, which often plays like a stage adaptation — at times that works, at others it doesn't, and we talk through both in the first half of this discussion. Then we bring THE SAVAGES back in to consider how each film is shaped by its relative proximity to the end of life, their overlapping perspectives on professional caretakers and those who deal with death for a living, and the realism and usefulness of their pop-cultural reference points. And in Your Next Picture Show we take a brief tour of Tamara Jenkins's short but mighty feature filmography to date. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE SAVAGES, HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This week we're excited to present a conversation with His Three Daughters director Azazel Jacobs and cast members Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon during a special advance screening at FLC. His Three Daughters is now streaming on Netflix. From writer-director Azazel Jacobs comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father's apartment—much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home. This conversation was moderated by filmmaker Tamara Jenkins.

This week on the show – Azazel Jacobs is here! Azazel is writer-director of the new Netflix drama His Three Daughters, one of the most deeply moving films of the year so far, and a stunning addition to a filmography already brimming with intriguing tonal blurs and beautiful realised characters. You might know Azazel for acclaimed works like The GoodTimesKid, Momma's Man, Terri, The Lovers and French Exit. This film, though, cuts closer to the bone for the filmmaker (and audiences) than ever before, telling the tale of a tense, tender family reunion – one taking place within a heavy cloud of preemptive grief. Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne play estranged siblings Christina, Katie and Rachel in the film, summoned to their childhood home as their father enters his final days. In the quiet wait, ghosts from their childhoods reemerge and threaten to pull them further apart. In the emotional spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Azazel and Al break down why it is the painful wait for a loved one to pass away is rarely acknowledged in media – and delve into who these characters were for the filmmaker, who describes emerging from the making of this film a changed man.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. "I think David [Fincher] at first was a little disconcerted. I didn't know any of the vocabulary," says Carrie Coon. "After a particularly frustrating day where he was asking for screen direction or something, and I didn't know what he was asking me to do. I said to him, you knew, when you hired me for this movie that I'd never made a movie before. I don't know what you're saying to me. But if you explain it to me, I can do it. I will do it. I just need to know what it is that you're trying to get." Hailing from the Chicago theater scene, Carrie Coon is perhaps best known for her breakout role in 2014's highly acclaimed GONE GIRL, playing twin sister to Affleck's Nick Dunne in the adaptation of the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn. Other credits include HBO's THE LEFTOVERS, FX's FARGO, Sean Durkin's THE NEST for which she received critical acclaim, and Anthony and Joe Russo's Marvel Universe blockbuster AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, among others. In her latest project, HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, Carrie stars alongside Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen in a tense yet touching story of family dynamics; directed by Azazel Jacobs, the film follows three estranged sisters who come together to try to plan for the inevitable when their father's health declines. In this interview, we talk about her early career in theater and commercials, working with David Fincher in Gone Girl, her role in The Leftovers, the value of specificity in writing, advice for aspiring actors, and more. It's a big week! Tim Burton's long-awaited BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (2:08) finally arrives after its thirty-six-year gestation — Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara reprise their roles, and Jenna Ortega co-stars — and does it live up to the praise being heaped upon it? Megan lets you know! Next, we all saw HIS THREE DAUGHTERS (18:42), Azazel Jacobs' family drama about three sisters (Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne) grappling with their father's imminent demise. This flick is getting raves, but not from us. Finally, Megan and Dave watched MERCHANT IVORY (39:31), Stephen Soucy's documentary about the legendary director-producer team of James Ivory, Ismail Merchant, partners in filmmaking and life, and all the people who moved in and out of Merchant/Ivory family in front of the camera (Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant, for two) and behind it (in particular, novelist and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala). We liked it, with reservations (some of them big). And over on Patreon, we Spoilerpiece a movie that needs a spoiler warning: The 1987 Kevin Costner thriller NO WAY OUT!
John Legend stops by to talk about his new album of children's songs ‘My Favorite Dream.' Also, Jimmy Fallon shares his new children's book Five More Sleeps Til' Halloween. Plus, Elizabeth Olsen discusses her new film ‘His Three Daughters,' where three sisters come together to take care of their ailing father. And, chef Alex Guarnaschelli shares a delicious seared shrimp recipe.
For Episode 403, Nadia Dalimonte, Cody Dericks, Sara Clements & Danilo Castro, and I have much to discuss. It was a massive week in the world of awards season as we got the Opening and Closing Night film announcements for the 62nd New York Film Festival (NYFF), the entire 2024 Venice International Film Festival lineup, and a large chunk of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) lineup including the Galas and Special Presentations, Platform, Discovery, and Midnight Madness programming. Tune in as we discuss the films that will be playing at all of them, plus what we think will be announced over the next several weeks as we head towards the fall film festivals. We also react to the trailers for "A Complete Unknown," "His Three Daughters," reveal the winners of last week's poll asking "Which Has Been Your Favorite MCU Film Post-'Avengers: Endgame'?," ask this week's poll question, "Which Films Are You Most Looking Forward To Seeing From The 2024 Venice International Film Festival?," announce the nominations for the 2010 NBP Film Community Awards, answer your fan-submitted questions and more. Your feedback and support are not just important; they are the heart of our podcast, and we're grateful for your participation. Please note that you can vote on the winners for the 2010 retrospective starting tomorrow and continuing until August 17th. Thank you, and enjoy!
