My family just watched the movie, “The Princess Bride,” recently. (It was the first time Christina had seen it… can you believe that?) There is a scene in which Westley and Buttercup approach the Fire Swamp. Despite rumors of no one ever surviving the forest due to random bursts of flame, hidden quicksand and R.O.U.S.’s (look it up), Westley neared it confidently. His state of mind remains unfazed as each obstacle comes, and he cares for Buttercup through every trial, talking casually while the forest throws its best challenges to ensnare them. I imagine this mentality in Paul as he receives insight from the Holy Spirit that there is trouble awaiting him ahead. Why does he keep going when this is revealed to him? Because the larger gospel mission to which he has been called bears much more importance. He even states that he doesn’t even value his own life that much, saying, “I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Do you see that Paul’s perception of his value in life that propels him forward comes from the purpose God gave him? Some of us are pursuing things that we think have value but will leave us empty. Is growing your business something that you think will increase your value? It won’t. Is getting yourself navigated into the right social circles what you value? Let me tell you, it isn’t worth much. There are so many other things that we are pursuing, but the only thing of worth is this: accomplishing the purpose for which God put you on earth. When we discover that God-given purpose, then we can walk through life’s flames and hidden quicksand with a confidence that is out of this world — because it truly is from out of this world. As Paul encourages the church leaders in this passage, he confidently states that his conscience is clear because he did not withhold teaching about anything; he had taught them the whole counsel of God and has no regrets about running his race well. Let’s live with purpose and on purpose, completing the task(s) to which God has individually called us so we can state with confidence that our conscience is clear before God. That is finishing the course well. For Scripture, notes, upcoming events, & more: http://bible.com/events/49387571

Working in media today feels weirdly similar to trying to navigate the Fire Swamp in the classic 1987 film The Princess Bride. Success is possible, but the path is surrounded by quicksand, Rodents of Unusual Size, and numerous other obstacles along the way. It’s tenuous at the best of times, and damn near impossible under trying circumstances—like during a pandemic, for example. It requires ingenuity, a propensity for risk, and a bit of gut feeling. Good Beer Hunting operates a little differently than many other media companies, in everything from the stories we tell to the revenue streams that support those stories. But if you’re looking for a complete history of GBH, this isn’t that podcast. In this conversation with Michael Kiser, co-founder and creative director, we focus on some of the meatier pieces GBH has published that, at first glance, fall outside most people’s expectations of beer media. Exploring subjects like non-disclosure agreements, concepts like hyperreality, historical deep-dives, and other topics far from the clickbait-esque model of contemporary media has positioned GBH as a … I’ll say unique figure in beer conversations. Michael and I discuss who we think is reading GBH and why; how conversations and beer culture have changed over the years, and how they’ve also stayed the same; our role in media and the beer industry at large; why making people mad is inevitable, and why it’s sometimes important; how balancing heady—and crucial—topics like racism against more lighthearted narratives sparks surprising, and sometimes dangerous, responses from readers; what stories have surprised him; and the ones he still wants to tell.

The Princess Bride: True love, fairy tales and the Gospel- Ep. 30

Oro Valley Catholic

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2020 25:06

The Gospel is the true story of true love, the Divine Bridegroom Christ for his bride the Church. The Princess Bride is effective and heart-warming as a movie because it imitates the story of the Gospel. Love broken by separation (Adam and Eve) and love restored by the bridegroom’s relentless search for his bride down into the depths of sin and death. It seems too good to be true, if you have a heart for true love distorted by distrust of God. As Buttercup and her true love escape Humperdinck by fleeing into the dread, fire spurting, quicksand filled Fire Swamp with rodents of unusual size, she says to Westley, “We’ll never survive!” Westley rightly responds, “Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has.” Well, we know that’s not true. In fact, the Bridegroom has gone to prepare a place for us and will return for us. The Gospel is the pattern of True Love. Music composed and performed by Russ Ronnenbaum

This week, we dive into the Fire Swamp, cross a Sicilian with death on the line, and get out our six-fingered gloves along with Geek Girl Chicago as we check out Rob Reiner's 1987 classic fantasy-comedy The Princess Bride! The ultimate loving homage to the trappings of sword-and-sorcery fantasy romances, this adaptation of the William Goldman novel is probably one of the most beloved comedies of all time, and for good reason: the performances and script are spot-on, and the few hints of sneaking subversion of the fantasy genre never undercut the proceedings in a cynical way. Still, we manage to find a few topics that haven't been discussed about this much-talked-about film, including: Should the characters have all died of blood loss at the end? Was Westley really gonna slap Buttercup? Would Fred Savage have gotten along with Bastian from The NeverEnding Story? Is the bit with Billy Crystal a bit too schtick-y? Find out the answers to these questions and more, along with our custom cocktail and drinking game! NOTE: There may be a bit of light buzzing/static throughout the audio track due to some technical difficulties, for which we apologize. We've cut it down as much as possible, but it might still be there. We'll do our best to limit that in the future - sorry about that!
