This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, it's a party! Rick has, count'em, five guests, all of whom are wearing black. In addition to Ariel, David, and Ripley, special guests Pete McConnell and Kevin Roberts are in the house. Ariel's presence was unplanned, as he's in Italy, where Pope Francis has just died, so he's feeling special in a strange way. Ripley is continuing to grow a mustache this week as he prepares to try to avert being placed on a jury. The guys get down to it with the question: Can one upset Rolex? Like, is it possible? Pete says "no," Ripley says, "kinda sorta, not really," and Ariel says, "heck yeah." There's only one way to find out the whys of these various answers, and that's to tune in to the show. Another big highlight of this festive episode is a conversation about Blancpain — lots of praise with a caution about the price (no surprise there, though). And guess what's back? Hit, Miss, Maybe. MONSTER PARTY GETS... WAY OUT! WAY OUT! SHAWN SHERIDAN, JAMES GONIS, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pack their audio pic-a-nic baskets, for a journey through animation history! Join us for a wacky race into the exciting world of... HANNA-BARBERA! WILLIAM HANNA and JOSEPH BARBERA were the innovative team behind many of the world's favorite cartoons. Over their long career, they were responsible for such memorable characters as TOM & JERRY, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR, THE JETSONS, SCOOBY DOO, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, TOP CAT, SECRET SQUIRREL, HONG KONG PHOOEY, THE WACKY RACES, ATOM ANT, SNAGGLEPUSS, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME, and HUNDREDS more! HANNA-BARBERA also blazed a trail when it came to producing adventure cartoons. This was the team that brought us JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, SUPER FRIENDS, SHAZZAN, VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS, and many other fantastical Saturday morning staples. Not satisfied with the status quo, HANNA and BARBERA ventured out into the world of feature films, giving us THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR!, and the beloved animated classic, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If that's not enough for you folks, they even tackled live-action with THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR, DANGER ISLAND, MYSTERY ISLAND, and the under-appreciated live-action/animation hybrid, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN! Of course, we don't have the space to list all of HANNA-BARBERA'S achievements. That's what the episode is for. But, speaking of that! There was only one guest we could have booked for this epic topic. He's a friend of the show, appearing (along with fellow MP friend, CONSTANTINE NASR) on our CHRISTMAS SPECIALS episode, and has an awe-inspiring resume. He's a two-time Grammy-nominated and Addy-winning freelance writer, editor, and producer with 30 years of magic with The Walt Disney Company and over 40 years of professional writing and production experience! He's the author of MOUSE TRACKS: THE STORY OF WALT DISNEY RECORDS, and the recent (and dare we say, timely) book... HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY- FROM MODERN STONE AGE TO MEDDLING KIDS. And be sure to check out his podcast, THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA & BARBERA. Please welcome back the also funtastic... GREG EHRBAR! NOW, GET TO LISTENING... OR MEET YOUR YABBA DABBA DOOOOM!

Past lives. Musical improv. Celine Dion. Nicole Parker joins us on what it's like to leave a show not once, but twice. Nicole Parker has been able to play Celine Dion twice on the New York stage. The first during Martin Short's Fame Becomes Me, and the second during Titanique. She's had to say goodbye to the show once before, but returned for a second run – now having to say her heart will go on again. So what's it like saying goodbye to a show that will keep running while you move on? This is a topic not many actors speak about, so tune in and listen to this hysterical, yet touching episode about Nicole Parker's experience as Celine Dion in Titanique. Nicole Parker is best known for her work on Fox's sketch comedy show Mad TV (2003–2009, 2016), which she was a regular cast member. In July 2009, Parker concluded her run as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked, a role that she reprised on tour across North America. She voiced Penelope Pitstop in the animated series Wacky Races (2017–2019) and has appeared in the parody films Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie (both 2008). Parker currently co-hosts the Earwolf podcast The Neighborhood Listen, along with comedian Paul F. Tompkins. Titanique is a jukebox musical created by book writers Tye Blue, Marla Mindelle, and Constantine Rousouli, and music supervisor Nicholas Connell. The musical is a parody of the 1997 film Titanic and uses music introduced by Céline Dion. The show premiered in Los Angeles in 2017. It began an off-Broadway run at The Asylum Theatre in June 2022, transferring to the Daryl Roth Theatre in November. The production won the 2023 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical and for lead performer (Mindelle) and costume design (Alejo Vietti). The musical follows the main events of the film, with the exception of the present-day framing device; instead of treasure hunters searching for the Heart of the Ocean, Céline Dion surprises visitors at a Titanic museum and hijacks their tour. Dion serves as a Greek chorus for most of the show. The musical uses pop culture references, including allusions to RuPaul's Drag Race and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The critically acclaimed show has played off Broadway since 2022. Get Titanique tickets now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Lee laughs weirdly and sets in motion a sprawling natter about cartoons and Penelope Pitstop, before together Simon and Lee drop into a) what it is to be disciplined and committed and b) taking family for granted. Some other details from the episode: Hanna Barbera cartoons, double feature films, staying awake in films, VHS and Betamax, TikTok and the ubiquity of culture, John Berry and timeless time, the scale and invisibility of the climate emergency, weathering the weather with movement artist Helen Poynor, colleague cousins, Woody Woodpecker, the Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop, Wacky Races (including Dastardly and Muttley), Susan dry retching through lack of content, Simon's brother Ian training as a cyclist, avoiding rain clouds in the Wairarapa, Ian riding into the back of a parked car, Lee being too easily distracted, Ian doing squats (actually they were leg presses), not having siblings and spending so much time alone, coming home in the dark (unsupervised), taking family for granted once we are grown up, Lee's cousins Neil and Mark, Northern idioms and accents, being social creatures, being in and out, teenagers constructing language, understanding family through distance, being excluded, and being a timid kid.--- Related links (and necessary corrections): Coming back to a TikTok: https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/you-are-you-we-live-here-this-isPenelope Pitstop running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxfFM9neB8MGet in touch with Lee and Simon at info@midlifing.net. ---The Midlifing logo is adapted from an original image by H.L.I.T: https://www.flickr.com/photos/29311691@N05/8571921679 (CC BY 2.0)

Like most kids back in the day, I loved Saturday morning cartoons. One of my favorites was a short-lived racing-themed show called Wacky Races. It only lasted one season, but like most cartoons of the day, it lived in repeats for many years. It's the place where we first saw Dick Dastardly and his mischievous dog Muttley. I was thinking back to that show recently as I headed to work. Many people flew past me that day, doing 70 or 80 miles per hour. Plus, we were all dodging the horrible potholes on Nashville roads. It was much like that old Wacky Races cartoon... The MacRobertson Air Race got underway in spectacular fashion, with a pilot trying to take off but forgetting to release the brake. Once in the air, things got only more confused, with emergency landings, crashes, and pilots getting arrested by Benito Mussolini's men. Soon the first planes would arrive in Australia, and the people of Albury would play a major role in saving one plane from disaster. In 1934, the 100th anniversary of the founding of Melbourne was celebrated by what was at the time, the most dangerous and ambitious race in world history, flying from England to Melbourne. The race would see wooden biplanes go up against the first metal airliners and was funded by an Australian Willy Wonka, Sir Macpherson Robertson, inventor of Freddo Frog and Cherry Ripe. The finest pilots of the age gathered in England, a man who flew with a lion cub, a married couple who argued over directions, and a man who once ‘bombed' the English flagship, HMAS Queen Elizabeth, with toilet paper during a naval exercise. Prepare yourselves for a cinematic gang bang as Peter brings us a Gang themed week. We've scoured the depths of the criminal underworld to bring you the top 5 gangs to grace the silver screen. 2019 Mexican drama I'M NO LONGER HERE tells the story of Ulises, the leader of a Cholombiano street gang in Monterrey, Mexico, who's forced to relocate to New York after accidentally becoming involved in a dispute with a local cartel. You guys probably knew already that Cholombiano culture involved flamboyant fashion and listening to slowed down Cumbian folk music but this was all new to me. Full of accordions, vibrant colours and contrastingly muted tones, we spend a good chunk of the review describing the main characters haircut, because it turns out to be thematically relevant as well as quite a remarkable sight. Peter claims to have watched this movie more than a hundred times or something but I'm not so sure and when Sidey describes this as Spanish PATERSON that resonated with me as it captures the vibe of this slow and thoughtful meditation on identity, alienation, immigration and artistic expression. We finish things up with a look back at WACKY RACES and if that gets your nostalgia vein throbbing I'm afraid it's time to get flaccid again because this was awful and the races were obviously fixed. On the plus side Peter Perfect's car is essentially a motorised dildo. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
There's so much action taking place at the Glasgow "Super" World Championships that there's hardly been time to squeeze in a podcast, but we've finally managed it and these are RadioCycling's latest headlines...We start, of course, in Scotland, with the World Championship version of the Wacky Races. It's been frantic, but fun. There's been griping about too many corners, too many potholes and even too much racing, but it's been impossible to avoid being swept up by the quantity, quality and beauty of the action. As well as offering our take on "cycling's Olympics", we hear from USA's Neilson Powless, British track gold medallist and (first the thing the next morning) Mixed Team Time Trial Relay member Ethan Vernon, and from Ineos coach, Team GB silver medallist and new father Dan Bigham. Despite various attempts to kill it, most notably from the man himself, the Remco Evenepoel transfer story refuses to go away. In our latest update, we look at the spat between the rider's dad/agent and Soudal-QuickStep boss Patrick Lefevere and ask the obvious question: will he stay or will he go now?One of the central issues in the Remco saga is his team's need for reinforcements. In our analysis of the latest transfer news, we discuss whether Soudal-QuickStep are doing enough to satisfy their team leader's demands, highlight the new Portuguese stage racing talent who's been nabbed by UAE Team Emirates, and detail why the big winners in the transfer market have been... Lotto-Dstny. Returning to the Glasgow Worlds, we also have one of the feelgood stories of the season. It features two Ugandan racers who've emerged from a biking-crazy orphanage in their home country to compete at the Worlds. We tell the story of U23 Paul Lomuria and junior Lawrence Lorot who, thanks in large part to a British bike event and charity, are now attracting the interest of elite teams. We end with reflections on one of the sport's climbing greats, and arguably the climbing great, Federico Bahamontes, who died earlier this week – Tour winner, mountains king and fabled lover of an ice cream.Support the show
Finally! It's HERE! The Wacky Races' raison d'etre has finally arrived and...sadly, it turns out to be 1979's Scavenger Hunt. This film is currently hard to find, but - I don't know - maybe don't bother? Siggy and Wade watched it for you so you don't have to! And don't miss the exciting new induction into the Wacky Races' Two-Timer's Club!!! Our apologies for the delay in release. We needed the time to make sure this one was exceedingly long.

A special phonesode! We take a break from our Wacky Races miniseries for a casual conversation about Ari Aster's latest nightmare horror comedy. (And Siggy now wishes he had thought to compare the ending to Brazil.)
Disney gets in on this Wacky Race action with the third installment in their Herbie the Love Bug franchise, starring Dean Jones, Don Knotts, Julie Sommars, and the The Young and the Restless-Guy! More appropriately titled "Horn Dog Herbie" for reasons that will become apparent, this movie has everything: sexually aroused cars, necessary racing, unnecessary diamond heist subplots with liberal cribbing from Return of the Pink Panther, bumblers who don't bumble, fuel filler lines with widths are the size of forearms, a Muppet Borat, physics defied, and - of course - oil spurting on to people's shoes like a dog urinating on a hydrant. (It's never not funny...!) Wade & Siggy discuss this outlier's contributions to the Wacky Races sub-genre, what works and doesn't work, and the Herbie franchise as a whole. They dig deep into the effect of later retconning Herbie's origin story and the incongruous attempt to define his personality, noting that he could very well be a narcissistic sociopath who only looks out for No. 53. And a deadbeat dad. Fun was had by all. Before listening to our spoiler-filled discussion, check out Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, available on Disney+ and VOD. "It really picks up once they go to Monte Carlo!"

The SEVENTH entry in our Wacky Races mini-series is (somewhat?) at the mid-point of our ever-growing exploration of ensemble movies centered on a competition where the rules of the game break the rules of society. Wade & Siggy discuss the welcome spirit The Gumball Rally brings to the genre, how conflicts that are set up but never come into play are just fine, the raw sexuality of Raúl Juliá, where has Tricia O'Neal been all our lives, a novel way of mooning people, and ticking off more boxes of the series' use of elements from Spy Hunter. GUMBALL!!!! SENSITIVITY WARNING: This episode includes discussion of the film's use of the threat of sexual assault. Next Episode: Scavenger Hunt (1979)

GGACP celebrates the birthday of legendary animator William Hanna (born July 14) with this salute to Saturday morning cartoons featuring animation historian/author Jerry Beck (“The 50 Greatest Cartoons,” “The Hanna-Barbera Treasury”) and TV host/presenter Bill Leff (Me-TV's “Toon In with Me”). In this episode, Jerry and Bill (along with Gilbert and Frank) look back on the kiddie show hosts of their youth and deconstruct beloved programs like “Looney Tunes,” “The Flintstones,” “Jonny Quest,” “The Jetsons,” “Underdog” and “Wacky Races." Also, Daffy Duck meets Jack Benny, Gomer Pyle “inspires” Milton the Monster, Jackie Gleason (almost) sues Hanna-Barbera and “Batmania” inspires a wave of super-knockoffs. PLUS: The genius of Jay Ward! The art of Dave and Max Fleischer! The Three Stooges go robonic! Jerry hangs with Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng! As the nation heats up, so too does the Conservative leadership race. There are 11 people in the running so far, what can we expect from them? Plus, the nation's economic woes continue – we look at what more turmoil is to come. And, could we see record-breaking temperatures this week? Ros Taylor is joined by Naomi Smith to lay out the days ahead. "If I'm not maniacally laughing at the farce of it, I'm just depressed.” – Naomi Smith “We've got Conservative leadership candidates all promising to cut taxes, so how are they going to fund their levelling up agenda?” – Naomi Smith "New trade deals are not compensating at all for the trade that we've lost with the European Union.” – Naomi Smith “I think we are running into a long hot summer of very hard times for families.” – Naomi Smith "There are so many female candidates, and so many ethnic minority candidates, and yet everyone is right wing." – Ros Taylor "Labour's never had a female leader, whilst the Conservative Party might have had three Prime Ministers." – Naomi Smith "Whoever you want Penny Mordaunt to be, she can be." – Ros Taylor "Tax cuts on certain groups have no impact on economic growth whatsoever." – Naomi Smith www.patreon.com/bunkercast Presented by Ros Taylor with Naomi Smith.
