Teaching NotesMarriage is like a Dance The Bible never talks about marriage in the form of a right but as a responsibility. Core Passage: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21The Husband leads with love Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:22-32Recommendations for men:Leadership is not Lordship – don't use your authority to get your way. Make decisions that will benefit her not you Ask “What does she need?” Affection Conversation Honesty & Openness Financial Support Family Commitment Where are you taking her? The Wife's follows with respect However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.Ephesians 5:33Recommendations for women:Admiration Respect him for the progress he is making. You keep up with your part of the dance. Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 1 Peter 3:1-6Action Required: Signatures “I will lead with Love” “I will follow with Respect” Going Deeper DiscussionSubmit to one another out of reverence for Christ.Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. What did that look like? How can a husband follow that example in his marriage?Read John chapter 13. How does Jesus model leadership for his disciples? What would you call that?If a husband were to exemplify Christ-like servant leadership with his wife, what would submission to that look like? Would that still be a difficult thing to do? How does it relate to first 21? Why do you think Paul comes back in verse 31 and 32 to connect this picture of marriage with Christ and the church? How is this picture of marriage also a reflection of the gospel of grace for our salvation? Teaching NotesThe Biblical Definition of Marriage: Marriage is a covenantal union between a man and a woman into oneness for a lifetime, reflecting the image of God for the purpose of bringing new life into the world and caring for that life. “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,' for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.Genesis 2:23-24The Guiding Principle in Finding the Right Person:“I will only date and marry a strong, proven, committed follower of Jesus.” Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14a New PrincipleOnce you say, “I do” your key question shifts from “how do I find the right person?” to “how do I become the right person?” Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:1-5Two Marriage Killers: Selfish Ambition – always needing to get my way Vain Conceit – always thinking I am right when in fact I'm not Two Resolutions: Humility – Put those two things down for the sake of your mate. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:1-5) My mission is to become like Jesus for the sake of my mate. You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Galatians 5:13-15 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 Going Deeper DiscussionYou, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Galatians 5:13-15Thinking of these verses in the context of marriage, what is Paul saying about freedom and service? In a committed marriage, what small freedoms are given up for the sake of some greater freedoms? Give some examples. To "love your neighbor as yourself" is the fulfillment of the old covenant law according to Jesus. Does this quote from Tim Keller align with that truth in regards to marriage? How so? What if only one partner is willing to behave this way? What is Christ ,through Paul, calling Christian marriages to that is different than what we typically see in the current cultural view of marriage? How do we pursue that?“If two spouses each say, ‘I'm going to treat my self-centeredness as the main problem in the marriage,' you have the prospect of a truly great marriage.” Tim Keller Sunday Set ListWFC Lenexa + WFC AnywhereEgypt- Cory AsburyWhat a Beautiful Name- HillsongBelieve For It- CeCe WinansBecause He Lives- Tasha CobbsWFC SpeedwayUnstoppable God- Elevation worshipThere is a King- Elevation worshipThis is How I Fight My Battles- Upper RoomIt Is So- Elevation worshipBe sure to save our Spotify Worship Playlist, updated weekly with the upcoming Sunday's set!

For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?" 2 Corinthians 6:14-16aLooking at these verses through the lens of marriage:Paul is making an extremely strong contrast between the Christ follower and the unbeliever. "Yoked together" can mean either journeying tightly/bonded together or taking in a particular set of beliefs which could be described as a "yoke" of teaching. Jesus says "I am the light of the world." Colossians 1:13-14 says, "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." and 2 Cor. 11:14 "for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light."In verse 15 Satan is referenced as "Belial' meaning "lawless, or worthess one" personified. In 1 Corinthians 1:18 Paul writes "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing (unbelieving,) but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1. What are some obvious problems this presents in marriage between an unbeliever and believer? 2. What kind of conflict could this present towards raising children?3. If intimacy at every level is a major component of marriage, what areas would be inaccessible between a believer and a nonbeliever? Teaching NotesAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.1 Corinthians 7:17 A Christian single should live as a believer. Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. (vs. 25)Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is. Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.1 Corinthians 7:26-28What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; (vs. 29)…those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. (v.s 30-31)I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife—and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord. (vs. 32-35)A Christian single can be fully devoted to kingdom causesIf anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get married. But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does better. (vs. 36-38)Christian singles are called to live sexually pure lives. The majority of studies now conclude that premarital cohabitation is associated with increased risk of divorce a lower quality of marriage poorer marital communication and higher levels of domestic violence Going Deeper DiscussionNevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. For this world in its present form is passing away. v.s 29-31Here Paul is encouraging both singles and married people to act like believers within those relational contexts. 1. What are a few misconceptions about singleness in culture that are challenging for an unmarried Christ follower? 2. What are a few misconceptions about marriage and culture that are challenging for married Christ followers?3. In verses 29 through 31 Paul is essentially telling us that life is short so prioritize the kingdom of God above everything else. In the context of your most important relationships what does it look like to keep God's kingdom priorities in front while at the same time honoring him in those relationships? Will it make those relationships better or worse? How so? Teaching NotesIsrael's Challenge Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.Joshua 24:14-15Application: get fit to fight. Strategy #1 - Get fit to fight by knowing & committing to God's plan.Strategy #2 Get fit to fight by getting a game plan.Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Our ChallengeIf you are a married couple, engaged couple or cohabitating, we want you to:Complete the Better Love Assessment Complete 4 Guided Date Nights Attend 4 Better Love Classes If you are single, 16 years and up, we want you to… Complete the Yada Assessment.
