Just because your definition of success is simple doesn't mean it's small or doesn't matter Kyle Davidson's “why” was shaped by his family. So when he started 12th Street Creative, his video production business, he says he knew, “My simplified ‘why' was to work with just one business, one person, and help them realize what their story is and then tell it. If I can make a living doing that,” Kyle says, “that sounds like a pretty good life.” The best part, he says, is the rebound effect. “Listening to people tell their stories, bringing it out of them a little bit, so then their story can change someone else.” For Kyle, that spells success, and he says that's important. “Once you can define success, the journey to get there gets a whole lot easier.” ______ Rise Grind Repeat Podcast powered by EIC Agency ______ Hosted by Dustin Trout Produced by Andrei Gardiola __________ Check out the full video episode at: https://bit.ly/3dlwjnJ https://spoti.fi/2Mgfpe6 https://apple.co/2MiQdUv For more information visit our website at https://eic.agency/ We are also on Instagram @EveryImpressionCounts

Kyle Inserra is both a commercial real estate advisor and a media mogul. To become the latter, he had to risk the former. “Everyone's coming from this fear mindset that you're giving away too much,” Kyle Inserra explained about sharing information on the Digital Hospitality podcast. “They don't want to say anything. "The ability to connect with folks digitally and give out information has been a huge thing for me.” Huge indeed, and even more so — different. Yes, most people in Kyle’s buttoned up, bottom line-oriented industry are not into giving out secret ‘code’ – especially not on social media. https://youtu.be/L_-0nGRr0B4   Kyle Inserra on Digital Hospitality Podcast: Kyle Inserra is a Restaurant Growth Strategist and Commercial Real Estate Advisor who is also host of The National Restaurant Owners Podcast. The entrepreneur was a guest on Digital Hospitality, where he discussed publishing content online, digital marketing, the changing real estate and restaurants industries, and leading with truth, numbers, and goals. Visit https://taplink.cc/kyleinserra to learn more about Kyle Inserra. While Kyle's competitors are keeping intel close to their chest and operating on the old guard, Kyle is creating content on Tik Tok as an effort to empower the next generation of restaurant owners looking to understand both sides of the business. “I focus on giving it all away to the point where I have these crazy notebooks of little ideas that I get because there's so many little things that come to mind,” shares Kyle on his approach to teaching on Tik Tok and other social platforms. “You want to share with folks who are really good at running a restaurant but make bad real estate decisions or bad partnership decisions.” This is because as a commercial real estate advisor, Kyle views restaurant owners as his partners, not his tenants. He realizes by revealing the ins and outs of what he does in real estate that it allows future clients to better establish their footing so both sides can succeed. For better or for worse, not everyone in his industry is catching up to speed. “With all due respect to my fellow brokers out there: you make my job easier when you don't do it,” laughs Kyle. “I can shoot you a link to my YouTube video or a site tour or a market update. I'm at a distinct advantage.” Over the course of the pandemic, Kyle’s content creating approach has challenged conventional thinking in his industry and offered him his own lane. As restaurants re-open and new owners and operators want to rent vacant space, Kyle believes it’s important for each side of the equation to let their guard down and be open. “Whatever your concept is, my advice to you is be completely transparent with the landlord,” says Kyle. “Starting with, ‘Here's what I do and I only need this much space. Can you do it yes or no?’ And to be honest, be aggressive with the rent.” Transparency is a two-way street. By Kyle leading with his truth, numbers and goals, his potential partners are more likely to do the same thing so that both parties can prosper. “Historically, restaurant owners don’t like to share their books,” Kyle notes. “They didn't need to. But it's in your best interest right now to show them.” While Kyle isn’t sharing books and bottom lines on his numerous social platforms, he is sharing his life and lessons at an impressive clip. For many professionals navigating the internet, drawing the line between business and play can be cumbersome. For Kyle, there’s no line. “At the end of the day you're building a business and a life,” says Kyle. “And my content is so intertwined. I'm excited to see what it looks like in twenty years.” In 2021, it’s looking good for Kyle.   Posting and Connecting Online: Just recently, his open approach to posting his personal life led to a lead in his professional endeavors. “I've gotten a lead off of a picture with my French bulldog,

Kyle Reyes Talks About Behind-the-Scenes of His Marketing Success Do you know what to look for in a marketing agency? How do you cut through all the noise and get your message heard? Marketing expert Kyle S. Reyes talks about behind-the-scenes of achieving success in marketing that business owners don’t normally talk about. Key Questions Asked: What were some of the roadblocks Kyle faced when he was starting out? How did Kyle navigate through the creation of his team during the early stages of his business? What should business owners look out for in deciding which is the best agency to work with? What mistakes does Kyle see business owners often make when it comes to marketing? Why is this mistake so crucial to avoid especially to those who are just starting up? What mistakes do business owners unknowingly commit? What advice would Kyle give to business owners?  Highlights of Lessons Learned: Overcoming Roadblocks So many entrepreneurs get into what they do because they’re passionate about it but didn’t know the first thing about running a business. For Kyle, taking a bigger portion of the seed money and setting it aside specifically for accounting and legal research, and hiring a chief financial officer would have saved him a huge amount of time and valuable resources during the early stages of setting up his business. People say, “When you have weaknesses you should double down on those weaknesses and get better at them,” that’s ludicrous. Don’t double down on your weaknesses. You should hire somebody to deal with those weaknesses and instead quadruple down on your strengths.  Building His Team Kyle’s early team had a lot of creativity but not a lot of structure He had since learned that it’s not worth it to spend so much time trying to create a culture of structure because it goes against everything he was trying to create.  Choosing an Agency Business owners should be able to recognize the following red flags when selecting a marketing agency to partner with: If your prospective agency doesn’t ask a lot of questions If they’re willing to take on everybody and anybody as clients. (Not everybody is going to be a fit.) Always be skeptical about agencies that aren’t willing to give you the raw data of your Google analytics Be wary of agencies who take a percentage of what you spend on your advertising Be wary of an agencies that are not willing to share with you testimonials from clients Be wary of agencies that are not a good at storytelling. The best form of marketing and advertising is storytelling. And agencies that focus on taking your core values and your unique selling proposition and turning that into a narrative for you, that’s where you’re going to find a higher level of success. It’s also important to know your story before you even begin looking for an agency.   On Marketing It’s not about how many times you failed, it’s about how many times you were able to get back up. You can’t take losses personally. Running a business is like dating - at the end of the day you’re going to have those setbacks, but if you let that take away from your energy or your drive and enthusiasm, that’s when you become a loser. Advertising is a delivery method, marketing is the message. Being authentic in your marketing is so crucial to having that story resonate with your target demographic. With an effective marketing campaign, you’re built around an authentic voice. If you can understand the paradigm shift that’s happened in our culture and how people are consuming content and how to make content resonate with them as a business owner, you will win every single time.  Common Mistakes One of the most common mistakes that business owners make in marketing is not being authentic in their campaigns. They are also afraid to take a stance, they’re afraid to take a perspective and so they’ll just water down their...

Building A Successful SDR Team From The Ground Up    The sales team is the backbone of a business. It's composed of both SDRs and BDRs, both working to make sure the business is thriving through a steady flow of consumers. For this episode, we'll discuss SDRs and how you can build a successful SDR team.    Kyle Coleman started his career in B2B tech in 2012 at an advertising agency in San Francisco. He supported clients such as Dell, VMWare and other large companies; however, Kyle eventually realized that advertising wasn't where he wanted to continue his career.  In a timely move, he was able to pursue an exciting new position in sales and marketing with a start-up called Looker, a data analytics company based in Santa Cruz. Kyle was recruited and became a member of the Looker team in 2013. He stayed with Looker for six years and was able to experience firsthand the growth of the company from six people to roughly eight-hundred sales reps and 100,000 ARR to over 100 million in ARR.    In 2019, Kyle made the move to Clari.    Growing the team As a startup company, oftentimes it's hard to know what really needs to be done. In the beginning, there can be a lot of trial and error. Sometimes you have to try different options to know what works and what doesn't.    Kyle has observed  many startup companies are reluctant to bring on an SDR function because they think it's too soon; however, as the SDR for Looker in its earliest days, Kyle knows firsthand that it's never too soon. He wasn't just getting coffee and making sure that everyone was fired up. His main role was to partner with marketing. The SDR team became a three-person team in the first 12 months and it allowed their marketing leaders  to test messaging in a variety of ways. They had the ability to use the tools to get in front of the right people from great companies and be the feedback loop for their marketing team.    The SDR team wasn't just adding value in setting up appointments, they were also adding value on the marketing side. It helped them understand what they needed to do to differentiate themselves as sales reps in the market. They proved their value early and it was one of the reasons why success resulted in more successes. The impact was felt from the top-of-the-funnel column to the thought leadership marketing. The SDR team gave their company a solid start by offering insights about how to get to the  right people faster.  The sales process was different back in Kyle's time with Looker. The email market then wasn't as saturated as it is now and their root force also helped in getting a lot of messaging out in the market. Their aggressive SDR method made them stand out compared to other SDR teams of that time. However, regardless of the changes in the sales process now, outbounding for companies in its early stages is critical to understand the company's ICP, the personas, and the kind of messaging that should be delivered to the market.    Make the first right hire A startup company has to make the right hires from the beginning. The ideal candidate has a little bit of experience but not so much he has forgotten how to actually do the work. The first hire should also be someone who is willing to take risks and to own success as readily as he owns his failures. Hire someone who is hyper, driven, and motivated. You can give them space to practice their own methodologies but also make sure to give them a support structure that allows them to fail with management ready to help with adjustments. You need somebody who is 100% dedicated to the cause, one who can communicate verbally and in writing, and someone who wants to help you achieve your company's mission and vision.    Step 1: Describe your Ideal Customer Profile Knowing your ideal customer profile will help define the right hire.  While working at Looker, Kyle looked at the company's number of employees and its funding. The ICP in Clari is much tighter due to the specifics around the tech stack. Ultimately, you want companies matched with similar personas.   Step 2:  Work with the product marketing team The product marketing team writes wonderful blog posts, white books, and e-books so don't box them into just writing outbound emails. Blog posts and outbound emails are two different skill sets.  Hire a person who knows how to write outbound emails. These emails need to contain a call-to-action, personalization, and all the related content that  comes from your SDR. It's good for SDRs to get their leads from LinkedIn. It has the most trust-worthy data and is always up-to-date.    There are other additional tools that  can be used as well such as ZoomInfo, LeadIQ, and Seamless.ai to get contact information.. Cold-calling may be an old method but it's still mission critical.  Getting on the phone is how you get to hear a Yes or a No. Sometimes, it also depends on the personas. People who are more technical tend to stay away from phones. However, if you are connecting to salespeople who can talk about anything, then cold calling is a way to have real conversations and build relationships. Always include an omni-channel approach with your cold calling that includes email, LinkedIn, social media platforms, and other useful tools.    You can also make use of SalesAcceleration, Sales Automation, or SalesEngagement to make analysis easier for your SDR team. These tools will help the team report back to the product marketing team or the sales team.   Challenges in building the team Most companies struggle because they create work for their SDR team that is too prescriptive. Instead of giving the team user guide, they give SDRs too many scripts.   At Clari, they provide their SDRs with processed frameworks that they can follow to attain success. Within the framework, they still have room for autonomy and personalization. They can still make the presentation their own and develop it from the bottom-up. Companies struggle because they expect their SDRs to be doing top-down mandates and it can make no sense.    Of course there has to be a process and structure but you also have to allow the people you've hired to think on their own. Giving them the space to grow will make them feel like they are part of a team. Make them feel comfortable that they can share their failures in order to figure out what works and what doesn't. This is important when you are building a team. People can't be afraid to talk about their failures. Build an environment where SDRs are expected to try new things and where failure is the right of passage. Allow them to understand that if they're not failing, then they're not trying enough new things. They need to continue to push themselves in order to evolve.    The process time  There is no exact time frame for the entire process because every company is different. The role of SDRs and account executives are becoming more thoughtful and strategic so the ramp time is longer than it was in the past. Kyle has seen that it takes about six months for people to feel proficient in the process and then closer to nine to twelve months for them to become comfortable with the competitive ecosystem, the different personas, and the nuances within the culture. For Kyle's company, it takes an SDR six to twelve months and then stay in that role for the same amount of time.    Kyle suggests that for people to be successful in their role, there needs to be gradations of incentives and levels that can be achieved. Without these in play the company risks losing high performers. Incentivizing is a great way to hold onto your best.  Keep your people in your team There has to be one hundred percent transparency when it comes to relaying how the team can be promoted and what is at stake. For Clari, they tell their team the quantitative criteria they need to move through the four levels that can be achieved at their company. Employees know that the quantitative criteria is effort-based and result-based.    In Kyle's company, these are the four levels of achievement:    Level 1: SDRs start with inbound only roles which means talking to warmer leads and doing qualification.   Level 2: Promotion to either senior inbound SDR or junior outbound SDR, depending on what is needed in the company.    Level 3,4: Supporting larger sales segments from SMB to mid-market enterprise.    There has got to be ongoing performance feedback. Tell team members what they're doing well and where they need to improve. If needed, tell them what is keeping them from getting promoted.  The review cycle should be a constant stream of feedback and this goes both ways. The SDRs should also be able to give feedback on how management can improve.    Treat your SDR team as strategic thought partners and not just as cogs in the machine. #SalesSDR   Calling it quits Some managers struggle in letting their sales reps go but if they are not succeeding in their roles and they are not happy with what they are doing, then it is reasonable to have the talk to find out where they would be better suited. These sales reps need something new, either in reinventing themselves within the company or letting them go.   The performance-based role should be explained as early as the interview phase of the hiring process. Let these potential hires know they will get the support they need but if that doesn't work, they will get a performance plan, but if that performance doesn't improve, you will have to go your separate ways. This way, they accept the job knowing exactly what is expected.    Being upfront in the beginning may cause you to lose some people you were excited about hiring but if you get someone who is not performing well, you owe it to them and to your company to create an achievable plan to improve their performance. It must have both quantitative (result-oriented and effort-based) and qualitative (attitude-based) measurements. If they don't perform well then you have to help them transition out of the company.    Try Clari and other tools Clari is a tool that will help you get leads from Sales Navigator and into your CRM. LeadIQ also helps in skipping a step as you can export people directly from LinkedIn to  Outreach. Clari also uses Sendoso for direct mail for personalization.    Kyle suggests that managers should treat their SDR team as a strategic thought partner. Some of the best ideas come from them and you are doing the team and your company a disservice if you don't listen to their ideas and feedback every step of the way.    As for  individual SDRs, it is important to develop cross-functional relationships inside your company.  The more the process is understood, the better the conversations with potential customers. Prospecting is born out of confidence and confidence is born out of expertise about the products, range of services, and the personas.    “Building A Successful SDR Team From The Ground Up” episode resources  Clari is a revenue operations platform that is useful for every single person across your entire revenue organization. GUEST BIO: Kyle Shevlin is a front end web developer and software engineer who specializes in JavaScript and React.   Kyle is also host of the Second Career Devs podcast where he talks to guests who became software engineers after a previous career.   EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s show is Kyle Shevlin. Kyle specializes in working with JavaScript, React, Redux, GraphQL, Noda, Webpack, D3 and several others at the front end. Currently, he is working as a Senior Software Engineer for Webflow. Kyle is an Egghead.io instructor and is about to release a new JavaScript related course. He is also the host for the very popular Second Career Devs podcast, which is targeted at IT professionals who have previously worked in other industries. Kyle also speaks at conferences, meetups and regularly live streams on Twitch. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.57) – So Kyle, can I ask you to expand on that brief intro and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Kyle explains that he is a software engineer at WebFlow. There he is working on democratizing software as well as expanding the world of visual development and website building. He also makes podcasts and enjoys spending too long on Twitter. Kyle is a good scratch golfer and at one time he was going to turn professional. But, things did not work out, which he is actually now quite glad about. Playing sport is a tough way to make a living, especially if you are not in the top 100. He jokes that he much prefers his cushy IT career. (2.28) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. Career Energizers audience? Kyle says it is important to be open to opportunity. Over the years, Kyle has taken advantage of opportunities that he was not really looking for. Taking chances has had a very positive impact on his life. However, Kyle is not suggesting you go into things blind. You still need to do a bit of research to make sure it is a genuine opportunity and is right for you. (3.22) – Phil comments that a lot of people are reluctant to take risks, so is interested to know how Kyle overcomes that tendency. Kyle responds by admitting that he is more risk averse than he would like to be. However, when his gut reaction is to hold back, he actively pauses and fully evaluates the situation. This helps him to respond differently, if it is appropriate to do so. A lot of the time it turns out to be fear that he does not have the ability that holds him back. Every time he has pushed himself to get past that fear, he succeeds. (4.24) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. A few years ago, when he was first hired his manager tasked him with stirring things up a bit. His manager wanted to mix things as a way of driving change, with the long term goal of producing a positive result for everyone. Unfortunately, a few weeks into the job Kyle’s manager was moved on. So, he no longer had their support. However, Kyle carried on with the task he had been given. Unfortunately, things did not work out well. He tried to push change without gaining trust and getting consensus first. This experience taught him that you need to pick the right time to make changes. If something needs changing, Kyle now pauses, takes stock, appraises the situation properly, identifies the priorities, and then proceeds. Most importantly of all, he builds trust before trying to implement change. (6.48) – What was your best career moment? For Kyle, this is a tricky question because he automatically thinks of the latest thing he has achieved as a highlight. Each new achievement still gives him a bit of a rush. Career-wise this is a good thing because it keeps him chasing the next accomplishment. Kyle believes that the fact he is always chasing that high is partly responsible for his success. For example, he is about to release a new course as a way of building on the work he has been doing with egghead.io. He knows from all of the feedback that what people have learned from him has made a positive difference to their lives. That great feeling has driven him on to produce more tutorials. (8.19) – Phil comments on the fact that feedback is great because it gives your energy levels a boost, feeds your passion and enthusiasm. This ends up pushing you towards your goals. Kyle agrees that this positive feedback loop is very beneficial. When people tell you your work is good, it pushes you on to produce something even better. (8.41) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The fact that something new is always happening is one of the things Kyle finds exciting about the IT industry. In particular, how much the JavaScript ecosystem has grown and is still growing. It is particularly good to see the language being updated more frequently. Kyle is also excited to see more people getting involved in web development and software engineering through JavaScript. Code schools are attracting people from all walks of life. They bring lots of experience, energy and passion with them, which is beneficial for the IT industry as a whole. (10.22) – What drew you to a career in IT? Kyle really enjoys solving little problems. He has always been a fan of logic puzzles, crosswords and that sort of thing. In fact, as part of his philosophy degree, he studied logic. When he began to code, he was able to apply what he had learned about logic in a tangible way. In ways that make a positive difference in the world. (10.53) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? Someone once told Kyle to remember that you have two ears and one mouth. He likes to talk, so has had to learn to pause and really listen. (11.07) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Kyle says the only thing he would probably do differently is to skip grad school. Before starting his software engineer career, Kyle was a pastor. A job which led to him spending years studying for a theology masters. Now, he really wishes he had skipped his degree, discovered IT, and switched sooner. (12.22) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Right now, Kyle is focusing on making a good start at WebFlow. His past couple of jobs were not a good fit for him. But, he already knows the CEO and many members of the Webflow team well, so feels that he is finally in the right place. So, right now, he just wants to get stuck in and do a great job. (13.24) – So, are you planning to continue with your podcast? Kyle is planning to continue putting out a podcast every couple of weeks. (14.00) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Kyle has found that becoming more empathetic has really helped him. Trying to understand how others are feeling and what their needs are helps you to click with them. Over the years, he has realized that the times he has failed usually correlate to when he has been least empathetic. Phil agrees, he has noticed that more people in the IT sector are waking up to the need to be more empathetic. It is a change that is greatly benefiting the industry. (15.50) – Phil asks Kyle to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Kyle’s advice is to be vigilant about burnout. He suffered through this about a year ago. So, he wants people to be aware of the danger and take better care of themselves and set aside enough time to enjoy a healthy personal life. BEST MOMENTS: (2.40) KYLE – "Be open to opportunity." (4.16) KYLE – "Get more into the habit of taking that risk and saying yes, because that is the only way you're going to grow" (8.33) KYLE – "When you hear quality things about the work you're doing it encourage you to make even more quality work for them" (11.00) KYLE – "I'd studied logic and coding allows me to apply that logic in a very tangible way and make a change in the world" (13.22) KYLE – "Work happiness leads to life happiness, in my case." (15.00) PHIL- “Empathy is something that people need to consider almost daily when they interact with people.” CONTACT KYLE: Twitter: https://twitter.com/kyleshevlin LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyleshevlin/ Website: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyleshevlin/

Writer, pastor and counselor Kyle Howard returns to Paradox this week to talk about the cultural significance of Marvel's "Black Panther" as well as the Christian church's role in modern society. "The great tension with Wakanda" Just another superhero movie? Tl;dr ... no. "Black Panther" hit theaters this weekend and seems to have lived up to people's expectations for box office success. But what about its representation of black culture and the role models it gives kids today? Jordan kicks off the "Black Panther" discussion with an outsider's perspective of it as a movie, touching on its heavy themes of isolationism and radicalization and drawing some parallels to "Wonder Woman," another culturally significant superhero flick. [embed]https://twitter.com/KyleJamesHoward/status/965383884929150976[/embed] Kyle analyzes how "Black Panther" covers the realities of colonialism within the bright packaging of a Disney/Marvel movie. He talks about why one of the most exciting things about this movie is the way it gives black kids some admirable role models to look up to and learn from, men and women who are strong, confident, self-sacrificing and brave. For Kyle, this was a "deeply theological" superhero movie, and he explains why T'Challa is a Christ figure similar to other characters in epics like "The Chronicles of Narnia." A Neighbor Closer Than Benedict We talk about the secular vs. the sacred and the church's role in society. How should Christians apply their faith when it comes to voting, getting engaged in politics and trying to change culture? Jordan explains a growing school of thought among evangelical Christian leaders that pushes back against decades of evangelical Christians being ordered to fight the culture war. It's time to stop lifting up politicians as false gods and expecting them to save us. Kyle takes a critical stance on Rod Dreher's "The Benedict Option" and asks why Dreher needed to go so far back in order to find a saint who resisted a culture that hated how he lives out his faith when the black Christian church has been doing that for centuries. "Why didn't you knock on your neighbor's door and ask this?" he wonders.

What mistakes do Kyle see business owners often make when it comes to marketing? Why is this mistake so crucial to avoid especially to those who are just starting up? What mistakes do business owners unknowingly commit? What advice would Kyle give to business owners?   Highlights of Lessons Learned: Overcoming Roadblocks So many entrepreneurs get into what they do because they’re passionate about it but didn’t know the first thing about running a business. For Kyle, taking a bigger portion of the seed money and setting it aside specifically for accounting and legal research and hiring a chief financial officer would have saved him a huge amount of time and valuable resources during the early stages of setting up his business. People say, “When you have weaknesses you should double down on those weaknesses and get better at them,” that’s ludicrous. Don’t double down on your weaknesses. You should hire somebody to deal with those weaknesses and instead quadruple down on your strengths.   Building His Team Kyle’s early team had a lot of creativity but not a lot of structure He had since learned that it’s not worth it to spend so much time trying to create a culture of structure, because it goes against everything he was trying to create. Common Mistakes One of the most common mistake that business owners make in marketing is not being authentic in their campaigns. They are also afraid to take a stance, they’re afraid to take a perspective and so they’ll just water down their...
