Eating well in this day and age can be a challenge…from large portion sizes when you go out to eat to highly processed foods in your kitchen when you're cooking at home, many hurdles exist for those looking to live a healthy lifestyle where your body gets the nutrition it needs.  For Veterans, the task can be made even more difficult because the military lifestyle doesn't always lead to great eating habits.  Fortunately for those Veterans, the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System has a wide variety of programs to help them unlearn those bad habits while giving them the skills to turn their kitchens at home into a place that helps them lead healthier lives.   On this episode of The 9 Line, we'll speak with three of our dieticians who work every day with our Veterans about the programs available to those who want to improve what food goes into their bodies, what it takes to break some of those bad eating habits built up over the years, and what led them down the path to being nutritionists here at the VA.

This week's Borne the Battle – a benefits breakdown – features the Office of Small & Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU). They are an internal accountability office that protects and advocates for Veteran-owned businesses. They also work to ensure that Veteran entrepreneurs can compete and be selected for a fair amount of contract opportunities.Air Force Veteran Michelle Gardner-Ince is the director of the Women Veteran-Owned Small Business Initiative (WVOSBI), a directorate under OSDBU at VA. Gardner-Ince is motivated to help women Veteran entrepreneurs get opportunities, access and education to achieve their business goals. Since WVOSBI's inception in 2019, it has provided women Veterans with networking and collaborative opportunities with Federal agencies and private-sector corporations. In this episode of Borne the Battle, Gardner-Ince answers these questions and more: What motivates her to help Veterans at VA? What is classified as a small business? What are the eligibility requirements for being certified as a Veteran-owned small business? How can a Veteran-owned small business become a Certified Veteran Enterprise (CVE)? How can Veteran-Owned small businesses avoid common mistakes when breaking into federal contracting? For Veterans who need help verifying their small business, OSDBU partnered with Procurement Technical Assistant Centers (PTACS), which helps to ensure that Veteran-owned small businesses can compete successfully in the government marketplace.Additionally, OSDBU helps Veterans understand the process of bidding on federal contracts through its Direct Access Program and Strategic Outreach and Communications office. But before contacting OSDBU, Gardner-Ince recommends that Veterans first reach out to the U.S. Small Business Administration's Veteran Business Outreach Center for assistance.OSDBU provides various services and programs that are ready to help Veteran-owned small businesses take the next steps to secure a federal contract. However, not enough women Veteran entrepreneurs know that these programs exist. Gardner-Ince aims to close the gap by reaching out to and helping Women Veteran-owned businesses by providing them with opportunities to understand the system and improve their business goals.Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Marine Corps Veteran William McDowell Additional Links: Borne the Battle #231: Army Veteran Dawn Halfaker, Combat Wounded Amputee, CEO of Halfaker and Associates WVOSB Resources. SSVF is a program administered by VA to rapidly rehouse Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Instead, an eligible Veteran simply needs to call or email their county's SSVF partnered nonprofit or consumer cooperative to start receiving SSVF assistance. The Shallow Subsidy provides rental assistance to low-income and extremely low-income Veterans who are enrolled in SSVF Rapid Rehousing or Homeless Prevention projects. And the Shallow Subsidy service is designed to incentivize recipients to raise their income by fixing the money they receive for two years. That means SSVF recipients can increase their income or benefits without the fear of losing their subsidies. For Veterans experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness and where SSVF assistance is not sufficient, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program will be able to help. However, not enough people know that these programs exist. SSVF aims to close that gap by connecting Veterans with housing support experts in their local communities. Bone Frog Cellars and Bone Frog Coffee Founder and CEO Tim Cruickshank says “giving is the reason we exist as a company.”  I bet you won't find that mission statement on many company websites. Tim served with SEAL teams on both coasts. In addition to being the team corpsman he was also the primarily responsible for demolitions. “My kids knew nothing but me being at war the entire time. I was gone for half my son's life at one time.” Tim retired in 2016 and was inspired to start the Bone Frog Companies while speaking at his retirement ceremony. “We had been at war sixteen years and it was still continuing. I wanted to find a way to give back. They say we die twice; once when we stop breathing and once again when someone says our name for the last time. I wanted to create a way to keep reminding people about these heroes.” Tim knew nothing about roasting coffee or making wine. So he engaged subject matter experts including Dave Stewart, one of the Founders of Seattle's Best Coffee. His partner Dave Johnson also plays a critical role in keeping him aware of his left and right boundaries. A portion of the proceeds from both Bone Frog businesses are donated to military charities including the Navy SEAL Foundation. This Foundation helped Tim his family while he was deployed The Bone Frog symbol was first drawn by a Navy SEAL Keith Kimura and became a sacred symbol upon his death. SEALS use the symbol to commemorate a fallen teammate.  Tim redrew the symbol out of respect for Keith and integrated the SEAL Trident and Navy anchor into his company's logo. TAKEAWAY: "For everyone who is thinking of starting a new business; find something with purpose that you are passionate about. For Veterans - there is a huge community out here ready to help you."

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® Veterans' Day rebroadcast (Photo courtesy of Brent Chapman, and used with permission.) For Veterans' Day weekend, Over Coffee® would like to thank our veterans and military service members, who give us the freedom to innovate. And one of the first people who comes to mind?  U.S. Army Captain Brent Chapman. Brent has made mindful innovation the focus of his career.  He is an avid maker, an information security professional and a Cyber Operations Veteran.  His military career has included serving as a research scientist at the Army Cyber Institute and, more recently, as Project Manager at the Army's Defense Unit Experimental.   (And congratulations to him--he just started a new position in information security at Apple, according to his LinkedIn profile!) We met Brent at the 2016 Sensors Expo, in San Jose, where he gave a presentation on the security considerations to keep in mind, while creating disruptive technology. As we honor our veterans, here is our rebroadcast of our March 2017 Over Coffee® interview with Brent, about security considerations for makers and innovators. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Brent first became a maker during his growing-up years; The pitfalls he sees in the “maker mindset” that could compromise security; The challenges of creating safeguards fof the Internet or other innovations in a connected world; What considerations makers might want to keep in mind, when connecting to the Internet of Things; The security safeguards Brent uses in his own home; One of his most fun recent maker projects, for his young son; Some of Brent's favorite maker resources;  Some cautionary considerations about wearables and security of data.  ALL-IN-ONE-PLACE, MAKER RESOURCES REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODE: MAKE Magazine Ars Technica Slashdot Adafruit (Would you like to know more about working with the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental, with which Brent was working at the time of our interview?  Here's the link for more information.) And, of course, here is Brent's maker website, Brentmore Labs.
