I feel that I got an up close and personal invitation into the life of a female pioneer who because of her own accomplishments, worked alongside other fearless women who broke through barriers. So when your mother sets the bar super high, what do you do? One follows suit apparently. And that's exactly what Andrea Ippolito has done. Both mother and daughter are engineers and their lives/personalities are very much intertwined or "tangled" as Andrea says.In this episode you'll hear stories of Mary working with female astronauts redesigning the first female space suit so it's anatomically correct for a woman. David Lee, Technology and Innovation Specialist, Singapore American School We talk STEM education and design thinking in K-12 with David Lee, an alumni of our MS in Educational Technology Program at California State University, Fullerton. David describes the work he does in supporting teachers and students at his school in his role of Technology and Innovation Specialist at the Singapore American School. We discuss with David how he approaches design thinking with K-12 students. Bio. I am currently the elementary Tech and Innovation Specialist at Singapore American School in Singapore. My responsibility at the school is to facilitate educators in integrating STEAM subject areas meaningfully and purposefully into the curriculum to increase learner engagement and achievement, provide learners with real-world experiences, develop their 21st-century skills, promote creativity and innovation, and teach digital literacies. I model/teach the design thinking methodology to students to equip them with a creative, problem-solving toolkit that they use to bring positive change to people's lives. I was also the former elementary STEM Coordinator at Korea International School (KIS) in Seongnam, Korea. As the STEM Coordinator, I contributed to the vision and execution of the school's STEM program (KoLAB), worked collaboratively with all stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students, parents, & community), assisted in the development and delivery of transdisciplinary STEM professional development, and attended grade-levels meetings to move all teachers towards independence in the delivery of transdisciplinary instruction and curriculum. I also created meaningful connections between disciplines, planned and executed opportunities for students to showcase their work within the school and community (i.e. fairs, exhibition, etc.). As the design teacher, I engaged learners through open-ended inquiry-based activities in the KoLAB spaces by modeling and teaching the design thinking process. You can find David online at his website (davidleedtech.org) and on Twitter and Instagram (@davidleeedtech). You can also pick up a copy of David's book on design thinking, which he talks about in the session, at Amazon or wherever you shop for books.
One may think what has IPR to do with Sustainable Fashion. Well, fashion industry is an Intellectual Property (IP) intensive industry, that deals with plenty of creativity in the form of designs, fabric etc. However, historically, the global fashion industry has had to operate in a low-IP protection environment, especially when it comes to designs. Fast fashion has benefitted hugely from the low-IP protection of the industry as it has been rather risk-free to knock-off designs of high fashion or indie brands and make cheap low-quality copies of them. This way, the low-IP protection has played a role in the fashion industry's race-to-the-bottom when it comes to sustainability. Fashion is also one of the most polluting industries globally, thanks to the “fast fashion” phenomenon. Fast fashion brands produce extremely high volumes of trendy garments and sell them for incredibly low prices. However, this comes at a huge cost, especially in the context of human rights abuses and our environment. What is the impact of low IP protection on local and sustainable fashion? How can the IP protection of fashion designs and generally of the industry be improved? What makes fash fashion so dangerous from the human rights perspective? What is the impact of sustainability on the brand value? Find out answers to these and many more interesting questions by listening to Heidi Härkönen, a lawyer and doctoral researcher at the University of Lapland, and Annariina Ruokamo, Research, Development, and Innovation Specialist at LAB University of Applied Sciences and a clothing designer. Let's make fashion sustainable again!
Prateek Sureka is an Innovation Specialist who works in the intersection of policy, technology and innovation, consulting governments to develop Smart Cities of the future and leading teams in the Uk, India, Canada and United States. His vision for the future is to support climate change where we cut out carbon emissions and get rid of economic disparity. We discussed some innovations that incorporate interesting robotics and tech. Singapore, for example, has robotic police, in the form of robotic dogs, created by Boston Dynamics that help to regulate how far apart people are social distancing. A dystopian future is not out of the question with these types of advancements so using caution is more than necessary. Shows like Black Mirror demonstrates how this kind of tech may go awry, though we humans can explore ways to safely incorporate tech into Smart Cities. There is a trade off to living in these kinds of cities since it can be costly. We also discussed data privacy and what people are doing to advocate for policies around security. Some questions we address: What is a Sidewalk Lab? What systems in a smart city will be affected? What training should our youth get now to adapt to the future job market? What has to happen in order to see smart cities as a reality? How long will this take? When will 5g get here and how will it shape the future of tech? What jobs should our youth prepare for?
Today we spoke Steve Gera – Innovation specialist, former NFL coach, CEO Gains Group, Leaders in Sport consultant and former Marine. Steve has an amazing resume, and story in high performance and sports from his start with the Marine Corps post 9/11 - to working in the NFL with the Browns and Chargers -to his sports sabbatical where he gained a depth of experience across different organisations in Europe - such as Chelsea FC, Barcelona FC, Real Madrid, McLaren F1, etc. We open the dialogue with an insight into Steve's life in American football, and what he has taken from this pandemic period. We talk about core strengths and core constraints in sports, innovation - and talent development, amongst other interesting topics. According to Mr Gera..."sports is the most important of the least important things. Let's elevate it". The Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series in 32 years this year. Gains Group is part of a new joint venture with the Dodgers and their investment arm Elysian Park Ventures called 'BreakAway', a sport data exchange that creates, collects, and combines club and athlete data to help clubs better understand and position the athletes. This looks like a real game-changer in the world of performance science. Reach out to Steve for more info! Thanks for joining us on our show Steve - it was a pleasure!

Dear Friends & Colleagues,Welcome back to the Fall 2020 season of ‘Creating a New Healthcare’. We are now entering the 4th year of our podcast, with over 250,000 downloads this year to date! It’s clear that the issue of reframing healthcare has never been more important than it is at this moment. So, if you find value in listening to the podcast, I would urge you to share it with friends and colleagues. There is so much going on in the world right now. It’s a time of great uncertainty, volatility, distress - and opportunity. One of the unintended consequences of the sheltering-at-home and social-distancing - necessary to combat COVID-19 - is the devastating isolation, loneliness and despair it has wreaked across the US population. Research, prior to the pandemic, informs us that somewhere between 40 - 50% of the population experiences social isolation or loneliness. I strongly suspect that the pandemic has raised those numbers significantly. We also know that it’s not just the elderly. The second most affected segment of the population are college age adults. We desperately need a national solution to address social isolation and loneliness. So, what can NASA teach us about social isolation & loneliness? And, why is Humana, a major healthcare insurance company, collaborating with NASA to address social isolation? To answer those questions, we’ll be joined today by two distinguished experts in this area - Dr. Will Shrank, the Chief Medical Officer at Humana; and Dr. Gary Strangman - a psychologist and researcher from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Strangman is the Director of a “Neural Systems Group” at MGH and has also been working closely with NASA over the past 2 decades - currently as the Innovation Specialist for NASA’s Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH).In this interview, we’ll dive into the following:The physiologic and psychologic impact of social isolation on astronauts and the types of solutions NASA is exploring to deal with this. Some of the similarities between space travel & sheltering-at-home in the era of COVID-19.Startling statistics on the impact of social isolation on Humana’s senior members, and the types of initiatives they’ve been deploying to combat it.Next steps for the collaboration between Humana and TRISH.During the interview it becomes abundantly apparent that Gary Strangman and Will Shrank are superstars in their respective fields. The fact that Humana is collaborating with NASA’s Translational Institute for Space Health speaks volumes about the intense focus, commitment and highly innovative approach Humana is taking to better understand and combat the epidemic of social isolation. Humana and TRISH are also collaborating, alongside others, in a public health awareness campaign, called ‘Far from Alone’. This program addresses health-related social needs and promotes understandings of loneliness and social isolation - issues that are exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic. I recently read a quote from Atul Gawande that provides a meaningful context to the work that Dr. Shrank and Dr. Strangman, and their respective organizations, are engaged in. “We’ve been wrong about what our job is in medicine. We think our job is to ensure health and survival. But really it is larger than that. It is to enable well-being. And well-being is about the reasons one wishes to be alive." Until Next Time,Be Safe & Be Well.Zeev Neuwirth MD

The Beyond Meat IPO in 2019 marked an inflection point not just for the global alternative protein ecosystem but the fledgling Indian innovation ecosystem as well. Calls to offer capital, R&D and entrepreneurial talent started pouring in. But the best things take time, and building something entirely new takes much more. An innovation ecosystem takes patient capital, collaborative partners, supportive incubators, and years of developmental research being translated from the university to the market via entrepreneurs collaborating with researchers. While these components exist in every market, in India, the ecosystem is still embryonic. Each of these elements - research, incubation, capital infusion, product development, industry collaboration, and finally market launch takes enormous effort and has to be built from scratch. Connections between these players have to be forged, and we’ve played matchmaker for technology transfer, talent pool development and connecting catalytic capital or corporations to the right companies. Today’s guest Shardul Dabir is GFI India’s Innovation Specialist. Shardul has been thinking of food systems since his teenage years, and offers some innovative answers for how we can grow the early stage Indian ecosystem in smart protein.NOTES:Organisations mentioned:NIFTEMICTCFTRIIIFPTIIT-KGPIIT-DelhiCCMBMOFPIICARBIRACCSIRDBTDSTRISECompanies Mentioned:Impossible FoodsMosa MeatMemphis MeatsBeyond MeatJUSTGood DotGood MylkBibliography:Shardul’s Blog: The India Smart Protein Innovation Challenge: Unlocking talent bottlenecksThe India Smart Protein Innovation ChallengeGFIdeas India Smart Protein Innovation CommunityFood Pathshala Essay Competition - 2016. Welcome to VHA Innovation Ecosystem podcast! On this episode, we cover advanced care planning and programs that help Veterans have difficult conversations with their care providers and families. Dr. Kimberly Garner and Laura Taylor speak to Advanced Care Planning via Group Visits (ACP-GV). ACP-GV uses interactive, patient-centered group sessions led by health care professionals to engage Veterans in thinking about and planning for future medical decisions. Participation in the group discussions often leads to better management of chronic disease and increased access to primary care, along with enhanced communication, decision-making, and satisfaction. The second practice featured in today’s episode is the Life Sustaining Treatment Veteran Education Video. This practice aims to create a video explaining life-sustaining treatments for Veterans who are visual learners to optimize their decision-making. The video is under development by Elizabeth Williams, an Innovation Specialist and a Clinical Nurse Leader at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System. In the final segment, Dr. Marvin Swartz, the co-director of the National Resource Center on Psychiatric Advance Directives (NRC-PAD) discusses psychiatric advance directives, or PADs. PADs are legal documents that record a person’s preferences for future mental health treatment. NRC-PAD serves as a place for consumers to access the timeliest PAD documentation for their jurisdiction. NRC-PAD also advocates for the implementation of laws that support patient-centered mental health care. We'd like more widespread knowledge and tools to use them to be available." – Dr. Marvin Swartz, Co-Director of the National Resource Center on Psychiatric Advance Directives

We’re trying to create a healthy and sustainable food supply through healthy innovation. I help startups and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to go into this space Watch out for Aylon Steinhart at a Stanford video How did you become an entrepreneur?: I was an account manager in Puerto Rico. I was studying business at Berkeley. Afterward, I took a leadership development training course at AT&T. I saw joining a leadership program to explore the learning ground of corporate life. Once I found out about industrial agriculture, things picked up fast and I wanted to make an impact. I saw that Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger were making an impact, and I wanted to be part of it. Impossible Burger vs Beyond Burger Even though I didn’t have a food background, I did a consulting to make a website for a food company. However, it was my innovation skill set that helped me with the GFI. Me not leaving the GFI alone is also another reason How to get to Expo West: Looking at the list and asking anyone to volunteer at their booth Startup Advice: Ask the right questions, make things as simple as possible, you need to think: “how easy will this be for the consumer to understand?”. This episode is part of the disruption series. We're going to discover how incredible people disrupt their lives, their industries, and the world to create a powerful impact. Don Wettrick is an Innovation Specialist at Noblesville High School and author of Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level. He is disrupting the education system and teaching the next generation of entrepreneurs. Don teaches a class called Innovation and Open-Source Learning. They explore how to network, how to collaborate with intelligent people, how to market, and so much more. Businesses have been launched from his classroom. In one year, four patents were filed. The class has their own methodology. They call it R.O.T.H. I.R.A. Realization – Related to flow states, realization often comes about through movement. They start the school day by walking and talking. Open Discussion – The thoughts generated through realization will fade if they aren't discussed. Tussling – “I love a good fight.” Debate challenges people to think. Homogeneous Grouping – Kids split off to collaborate on the same projects, but coming from different perspectives. Ideation & Prototyping – “We jokingly call this the difference between December 31st and January 15th.” It's fun to brainstorm, but it's hard to actually do it. Reflect – Every project is two weeks, because that gives you enough time to know whether or not you are interested in the subject. Adjustment – This loops back to the ROTH for Realization #2. Don started the class because he didn't see any passion for learning – or much of anything – in his students. They were being churned through a system that destroyed their interest in learning. Not only is the current educational paradigm passionless, it's just old. As a culture and a society, we are moving exponentially faster outside of education. What did your phone look like five years ago? Vastly different. What did your public high school look like in 1980? Roughly the same. “Here's the cruel joke we're playing on a lot of our students: we're preparing you for a future that used to exist in 1970.” Why is education innovating so slowly? We still measure success by test scores. You get into college largely based on your SAT score. They're accepting the kids who are best at not taking risks. We reward memorization far more than creativity. Some teacher unions have pushed back (not all). Don can't disrupt the entire educational system on his own. If you are a parent, student, or teacher and you want to change something about your local school system, Don will help. You can head to StartEdUpInnovation.com for a podcast, consulting, teacher training, and all the core services necessary to start and strive with new educational initiatives. -- Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Connect with Don & his class: https://twitter.com/DonWettrick?lang=en (Twitter) | Facebook Learn more & Listen to the StartEdUp Podcast Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level by Don Wettrick TEDTalk - “The Puzzle of Motivation” by Dan Pink The Art of People by Dave Kerpen -- We are also brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Social and Civic Innovation Specialist Tamaya Dennard spends her time sparking civic engagement at Design Impact, a nonprofit design firm focused on social justice and social change issues. It’s no wonder she went from being voted “most likely to change the world” in high school to working as an agent of change, but just how did she make the leap from real estate to politics? We talk about how she went from stuffing envelopes for a friend to managing PG Sittenfeld's political campaign, why quitting a "good job" to work at City Hall for a MUCH lower salary (thank goodness she had an understanding landlord!) was a pivotal moment, how she leverages the relationships she’s built to make a difference in the community, and why it’s important to create opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to come together.
