Doug McHoney (PwC's International Tax Services Global Leader) is joined by Dr. Romero Tavares, PwC Brazil's International Tax Leader and a professor of international tax law in São Paulo. Doug and Romero discuss the increasing intersection between Brazil's international tax policy and global trade dynamics, including the effects of recent US executive orders. They cover Brazil's high-tax corporate environment, its historically aggressive CFC-like full inclusion regime, and the country's rapid adoption of a qualified domestic minimum top-up tax (QDMTT). The conversation explores the political and policy rationale behind these moves, the anticipated redesign of Brazil's CFC regime, and the operational challenges multinationals face with the new OECD-aligned transfer pricing rules. Romero also breaks down Brazil's massive indirect tax reform and the country's potential shift to more internationally-aligned tax norms, while questioning the long-term viability of the undertaxed profits rule (UTPR) and Pillar Two's durability under changing geopolitical winds.

How do you advocate without being an activist in the military? Are they separate?  Can you rock the boat without tipping it over? How do you move the needle on inclusion in spaces that are dead set against your presence?  How do you criticize a policy and maintain your obligation to the chain of command from leadership?  How do you use media to tell your story when seeking a broader change? We will address these critical topics as I chatted with Blake Dremann about how he succeeded on active duty and became a face of a cause. At the same time, the politicians debated what was then (and still is) a controversial issue. He has taught me so much in my advocacy journey and how to push for change correctly. Commander Blake Dremann serves as the Supply Officer and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul – Logistics Deputy Director at Fleet Readiness Center – East in Cherry Point, NC. Commander Dremann is a native of St. Louis, MO.  He is a 2003 graduate from Ozark Christian College, received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, in 2006, and attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA. Dremann's operational assignments include Supply Officer, USS Maine (SSBN 741), earning Maine's second Logistics Excellence Award and recipient of the 2015 Vice Admiral Robert F. Batchelder Award and division officer afloat as Food Service Officer, Disbursing Officer and Assistant Supply Officer, USS Denver (LPD 9). Dremann's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (4). He is qualified as a Submarine and Surface Warfare Supply officer and an Acquisition Corps member.  Commander Dremann received the 2018 Department of Defense Pride Military Leadership Award, Modern Military Association of America's “Outstanding Advocate” Honoree for their 25th Anniversary, and was named a 2019 Out in National Security Next Generation Leader. In 2019, he testified before the HASC Personnel Committee along with four other trans service members and the current President of the American Medical Association Jesse Ehrenfeld. He was also president of the non-profit SPARTA from 2016-2019, whose mission is to advocate for inclusive military policy, provide peer support and develop transgender military service educational resources.Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com

Mathew Mitchell joined us for an open conversation on the difficult issues of race, diversity, inclusion and equity.  Mathew brings a unique perspective having grown up in the conservative community of Lompoc CA.  His father is a black man from Memphis TN, his mother an Irish immigrant to America, his sister is married to a woman and Mathew is a happy husband and father in a mixed-race family.  Mathew Mitchell was born to be a culture and engagement champion. Mathew and I discussed many issues about the Poway community including diversity (or lack thereof), the healing process after the Poway Chabad shooting, Poway schools, Poway High Football, the hate crime in December 2018 when a swastika was painted on a Jewish family’s home and the special opportunity to create an environment of consciousness and inclusion in our city.  (I am hopeful that my podcast can become a community forum where we can discuss these difficult conversations in a civil, respectful manner and learn from one another.) Mathew B. Mitchell and I spent time discussing Bryan Stevenson and the Lynching Memorial in Georgia. We explored the issue of mixed race in the media and in Mathew’s own life.  We discuss what white really is and was in terms of WASP vs Irish, Italian, Catholics, etc. We touch on a range of other topics including white fragility, white privilege, Al Campanis, Jackie Robinson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Christianity, access to quality education, criminal injustice, Fortune 500 leadership, Captain James T. Kirk, Star Trek, Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps, Blackish, Cosby Show, Jack and Jill, Aryan Brotherhood, Kanye West, Black Irish, Carlos Murphy’s, #MeToo, Gillette and self- segregation. JRP0053 Mathew B. Everyone has a role to play in creating and sustaining an inclusive work environment, but white men often opt out of, or are excluded from, diversity and inclusion efforts because the focus is on underrepresented groups. When white men are fully engaged in diversity efforts, they can help effect change at every level, and they also benefit from a healthy, inclusive workspace. Participants explore assumptions regarding white men, diversity, and leadership that impact behavior and shape the work environment, and they identify the next steps they can take to become fully inclusive partners working across differences to foster an equitable workplace culture. If a child is being integrated into a general education program but at a slower pace year after year, are they really being integrated properly? Fully integrated Education systems versus Segregated Education systems How the cost-analysis often plays a big part in whether or not a child is going to get fully integrated How can making this decision affect the community as a whole?
