During this episode, Marine Corps Maj Max Nauta discusses his Master's thesis from the US Army Command and General Staff College entitled: Multinational Operations in Strategic Competition: Leveraging the Inherent Informational Aspects through Culture and Narrative. Strategic competitors have significantly increased their influence in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in ways that jeopardize US influence and threaten democratic governance. The People's Republic of China (PRC) and Russia do this by exploiting the ambiguity of gray zone activities, such as predatory, opaque lending practices and the spreading of disinformation. US Forces, Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) builds resiliency against these gray zone activities through transparency, which it promotes through cooperation activities to strengthen partnerships and build trust in LAC. SOUTHCOM accomplished this, in part, through Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Southern Command (SPMAGTF-SC), whose mission was to conduct mutually beneficial engagements with partner nations (PN) to address shared challenges in the region. SPMAGTF-SC 15, 16, and 17 were US-only task forces. SPMAGTF-SC 18, however, became the first multinational task force. SPMAGTF-SC 19 grew on this by integrating ten PN officers from Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Belize, and the Dominican Republic. The author found that integrating PN officers into SPMAGTF-SC 18 and 19 exponentially strengthened partnerships in LAC at a relatively insignificant cost. This paper examines the degree to which integrating PN officers into SPMAGTF-SC 18 and 19 strengthened partnerships, and then compares those findings with theories on narrative and culture. In conclusion, the author presents the concept of a shared regional narrative and illuminates asymmetric characteristics of strategic competition in LAC. S.O.S. (Stories of Service) - Ordinary people who do extraordinary work
How do you advocate without being an activist in the military? Are they separate? Can you rock the boat without tipping it over? How do you move the needle on inclusion in spaces that are dead set against your presence? How do you criticize a policy and maintain your obligation to the chain of command from leadership? How do you use media to tell your story when seeking a broader change? We will address these critical topics as I chatted with Blake Dremann about how he succeeded on active duty and became a face of a cause. At the same time, the politicians debated what was then (and still is) a controversial issue. He has taught me so much in my advocacy journey and how to push for change correctly. Commander Blake Dremann serves as the Supply Officer and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul – Logistics Deputy Director at Fleet Readiness Center – East in Cherry Point, NC. Commander Dremann is a native of St. Louis, MO. He is a 2003 graduate from Ozark Christian College, received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, in 2006, and attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA. Dremann's operational assignments include Supply Officer, USS Maine (SSBN 741), earning Maine's second Logistics Excellence Award and recipient of the 2015 Vice Admiral Robert F. Batchelder Award and division officer afloat as Food Service Officer, Disbursing Officer and Assistant Supply Officer, USS Denver (LPD 9). Dremann's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (4). He is qualified as a Submarine and Surface Warfare Supply officer and an Acquisition Corps member. Commander Dremann received the 2018 Department of Defense Pride Military Leadership Award, Modern Military Association of America's “Outstanding Advocate” Honoree for their 25th Anniversary, and was named a 2019 Out in National Security Next Generation Leader. In 2019, he testified before the HASC Personnel Committee along with four other trans service members and the current President of the American Medical Association Jesse Ehrenfeld. He was also president of the non-profit SPARTA from 2016-2019, whose mission is to advocate for inclusive military policy, provide peer support and develop transgender military service educational resources.Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com
That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
It is such an honor to have retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Major Mike Lanpolsaen on this episode. Mike is currently working with an incredible servant leadership organization - the Warrior Scholar Project - they introduce participants to analytical reading, writing, and other academic and everyday skills crucial to success in higher education and help them become informed consumers of higher education and it is offered at no cost to veterans and enlisted service members. Mike highlights aspects of this organization that we can look to as servant leaders, and he also gives us many other things to reflect upon as we think about our leadership journey. We discuss ways to think deeper about how to connect to every level of our organization, while Mike models the astute confidence building of the Warrior Scholar Project that many of us could look to replicate in other aspects. We can make a difference. By raising awareness and funds for programs committed to taking action, the Swammie Shuffle will begin to redeem that day. We will not forget what happened, but we will not be crippled by it. We will use it as a reminder to reach out, to love each other, and to provide assistance for those who are struggling. In support of Veteran Suicide Prevention, Mike hopes to raise $2,222 for Awareness In Action! If you can't run, give!Awarenessnaction22@gmail.com

Guest: Brandon Webb is a combat–decorated Navy SEAL sniper turned entrepreneur who has built two brands into an eight-figure business. As a US Navy Chief, he was head instructor at the Navy SEAL sniper school, which produced some of America's most legendary snipers. As an entrepreneur, Brandon crashed and burned his first start-up in 2009 and lost everything. After this experience, he created SOFREP Media, which he continues to run as CEO. He is also an author of several books, including his latest thriller, Steel Fear, and several nonfiction books such as "Total Focus: Make Better Decisions Under Pressure" and "Masting Fear: A Navy SEAL's Guide." Over his navy career, he completed four deployments to the Middle East and one to Afghanistan. He redeployed to Iraq in 2006 as a contractor in support of the US intelligence community. An accomplished and proven leader, Brandon was meritoriously promoted to First Class Petty Officer, ranked #1 in the Command, while an instructor at sniper cell. He has received numerous distinguished service awards, including Top Frog at Team 3 (best combat diver), the Presidential Unit Citation (awarded by President George W. Bush), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with "V" device for valor in combat. Brandon ended his Navy career early to spend more time with his children and focus on entrepreneurship. Episode in a Tweet: Don't fight fear or try to beat it back; instead, embrace and harness it so you can triumph in even the most adverse situations. Quick Background: I reached out to Brandon after reading "Mastering Fear: A Nacy SEAL's Guide." While reading this fantastic book, I learned that Brandon was a fellow YPOer and knew he had to come on the show. I appreciated Brandon's views on mastering fear. My favorite line from the book is, "Fear can be a set of manacles, holding you prisoner, or it can be a slingshot, catapulting you on to greatness." While I haven't had people shooting at me as Brandon has, I could relate to his stories and appreciated how he overcame loss and tragedy to create a better life for himself. In this episode, Brandon shares his story of leaving home at 16, becoming a Navy SEAL, and losing his first business and marriage at the same time. He has overcome controversy, rebuilt his relationship with his father, and has followed his passion - writing. His media company, SOFREP, is a military-themed digital media company. SOFREP aims to be the "MARVEL" of military content and has already produced several hit online shows, books, and podcasts. It's a blend of video, digital print, podcast, and indie book publisher.

Robert firmly believes that excellence is the result of the cultivation and implementation in one's life of certain success principles. His leadership training is grounded in this idea and his belief that with the proper guidance, everyone has the capacity to develop a habit of excellence in themselves, and in others. He is the President and Founder of the Legacy Empowerment Academy Companies and the CEO of Legacy Leadership Consulting. Combining the Leadership principles he learned as an Officer and Company Commander in the United States Marine Corps with the personnel development strategies he has mastered over 20 years of leading, teaching, and coaching, Robert works with leaders who desire to increase initiative and follow through, reduce stress, and get the very best out of their team on every project, regardless of who they may lead. Jeffrey Reber was an American hero. The list of Marines willing to praise his battlefield leadership is long and distinguished. Many of them would suggest they’re alive today because of his split-second decisions during combat. The 1st Marine Division agreed, awarding him the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for demonstrating “sound, aggressive leadership over the course of seven offensive engagements with the enemy.” The citation continues to list specific actions where he orchestrated the enemy’s defeat. Junior enlisted Marines looked up to him and junior officers learned from him. However, the nature of his death prevents his name from appearing on some memorial walls. His wounds were not so clearly seen. After ten years of honorable service, Reber took his own life on August 12th, 2014. Another casualty of experiences where our servicemen and women see and do things most of us couldn’t imagine. Yet, he didn’t imagine them. They were reality seared into his memory. Constant reminders of the ugliness of war, the hurt of losing friends, and the pain from doing his duty.
