Ep. 307 Shane J. Wood - Encountering Jesus in the Book of Revelation

For a lot of people, Revelation is the Bible's great mystery—full of wild images and swirling predictions, often left to collect dust or to stir up arguments about the end times. But beneath all the confusion, Revelation also speaks to something deeply human: our ache for intimacy, our struggle with loneliness, and our longing to know that God is closer than we think. Today I'm joined by Dr. Shane J. Wood - professor, theologian, and author of Thinning the Veil. Shane has spent decades steeped in Revelation, not as a codebook for the future, but as a guide for living with honesty and presence right now. His approach is all about transformation: what does it mean to let the way of Jesus reshape our identity, our relationships, and the way we move through a world that often feels disconnected? In this conversation, we dive into how loneliness touches us all, how the presence of God can feel just out of reach, and how the message of Revelation invites us to draw near—to God and to one another. We talk about the cycles of power and fear that keep us apart, and how worship and vulnerability can open the door to real, embodied intimacy. If you've ever wondered where God is in the middle of your isolation, or if faith can make a difference in our deepest places of longing, I invite you to listen as we peel back the layers and look for the thin places—where heaven and earth meet, and where we discover what it means to be fully known and fully loved. So join us.Shane J. Wood (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is professor of New Testament and Its Origins at Ozark Christian College. In this episode of the Expositors Collective, Dan Hamel offers valuable insights into homiletics and the art of preaching. Recorded at The Creek, Indianapolis this discussion highlights Dan's thoughtful approach to sermon preparation, delivery, and connecting with audiences in meaningful ways. Dan begins by reflecting on the nature of preaching as an art form, drawing inspiration from a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He recounts how a guide's explanation of Van Gogh's Cypress and Wheat Fields transformed his appreciation of the painting by revealing its depth and context. He compares this experience to the preacher's role: to bring the richness and transformative power of Scripture to life for the congregation. Throughout the episode, Dan provides practical guidance for effective preaching: Identify the Primary Point: Distill the central message of the passage into a clear, memorable statement that serves as the foundation of the sermon. Align Structure with the Text: Wherever possible, let the sermon's structure reflect the natural flow of the passage, ensuring that the message remains rooted in Scripture. Preach to the Ache: Address the struggles, questions, or longings your audience is experiencing, demonstrating how the passage speaks to those real-life concerns. Preach with Authority: Recognise that God works through the proclamation of His Word, giving preachers the confidence to deliver the message with clarity and conviction. Preach for Conversations: Create sermons that naturally encourage further dialogue, whether in small groups or personal discussions. Dan emphasises the importance of preparing with the congregation in mind, including those who may not yet be believers. He urges preachers to craft sermons that are both accessible and impactful, meeting the spiritual needs of diverse audiences. This episode is filled with practical advice, thoughtful examples, and an infectious passion for the sacred calling of preaching. Whether you are a seasoned preacher or just beginning your journey, Dan's insights will equip you to proclaim God's Word with faithfulness, precision, and relevance. About Dan Hamel Dan Hamel serves as the lead pastor at The Creek in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born and raised in the western United States—Oregon, Nevada, and Colorado—Dan sensed God's call to ministry as a teenager and has followed that calling ever since. A graduate of Ozark Christian College, he is passionate about preaching, discipleship, and helping people grow in their relationship with Jesus. Since joining The Creek in 2017, Dan has been inspired by the church's passion for God's presence and its commitment to transforming the local community with the love of Jesus. Serving as a pastor brings him great joy, whether he's praying, teaching God's Word, or connecting with people in meaningful ways. Dalrymple begins by acknowledging the post-lunch time slot and sets a welcoming tone. He explores the difficulties of defining and diagnosing progressivism, using two metaphors from Paul's letters to Timothy: health and homebuilding. Dalrymple stresses the need for clear theological definitions, comparing progressive Christianity to medical diagnostics and home reconstruction. He opens with prayer, focusing on spiritual resilience in a changing society. Drawing from his experience teaching 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy at Ozark Christian College, Dalrymple uses a visual metaphor—like a detective's crime board—to highlight the traits of false teachers and link them to today's progressive Christianity. He examines 1 Timothy 1:3-7, contrasting speculation with stewardship, and warns against modern movements like the health and wealth gospel and the comfort gospel, which mirror historical challenges faced by the church. Dalrymple then shifts to the metaphor of homebuilding, cautioning against deconstructing faith without rebuilding on biblical foundations. He critiques the tendency to replace core doctrines with speculative or culturally convenient ideas. He addresses the delicate balance between gentleness and confrontation when responding to false teachings, and observes how progressive Christianity often seeks recognition, power, and controversy, drawing examples from past and present trends. Next, Dalrymple discusses the broader cultural influences—humanism, skepticism, Darwinism, naturalism, and postmodernism—that have shaped progressive theology, arguing that these secular philosophies have diluted Christian teachings. He identifies key traits of progressive Christianity: elevating culture as the ultimate authority, following subjective feelings, prioritizing tolerance above all else, and viewing activism as worship. He critiques the lack of clear doctrinal boundaries in the movement. Dalrymple examines the motivations behind progressive beliefs, including cultural pressures, personal hurts, and the desire for platforms or pleasure, and warns against the deliberate or unintentional distortion of traditional theology. He closes with practical advice, urging church leaders to focus on intentional discipleship and proper church discipline to safeguard doctrinal purity and restore those led astray by false teachings. In summary, this workshop calls for vigilance in addressing the subtle dangers of progressive Christianity, combining scriptural analysis with practical steps for protecting and nurturing healthy church communities. Chad kicks off the session by introducing himself and thanking the audience. He sets the stage for the conversation: how followers of Jesus can think critically and engage effectively with the world around them. He introduces a framework called the "cultural matrix," explaining how Christians approach culture along two axes: being "in the world" but "not of the world." Ragsdale describes different postures: accommodation (adjusting to culture) and hostility (opposing culture), noting both are still rooted within the world. He contrasts these with anti-culture (like the Amish, who isolate) and counter-culture (those who create alternative communities). These stances aren't wrong on their own but become problematic when they turn into rigid, inflexible approaches. Most people, Ragsdale says, fall somewhere between these extremes, combining approaches like quietism (accommodation + isolation), activism (counter-culture + hostility), and evangelism (counter-culture + accommodation). The key is flexibility—adapting to context while maintaining biblical balance, avoiding a one-size-fits-all mentality. Daniel McCoy then steps in, emphasizing the importance of creating a better culture as part of the Christian mission. He contrasts the destructive nature of the devil with God's creativity, which restores and unites. Creativity, McCoy explains, reflects God's work, combining virtues like courage and compassion to transcend the binary choices the world offers. He uses examples like parenting and church worship to show how Christians can integrate traditional and contemporary elements to build something more beautiful. During the Q&A, Ragsdale and McCoy address how these cultural postures relate to apologetics and the balance of grace and truth. Ragsdale emphasizes that apologetics should focus on addressing deeper hurts rather than simply winning arguments. He also stresses the need for fully integrating both grace and truth, sharing personal stories to illustrate how to live out these principles. They also touch on trends in evangelicalism, noting how younger Christians often lean towards activism. Ragsdale cautions against tribalism, urging ongoing self-examination and thoughtful engagement instead of falling into divisive either-or thinking. In closing, Ragsdale encourages the audience to keep asking questions, challenging their own views and others', and pursuing a more nuanced understanding of biblical truth. In summary, this episode offers practical wisdom for Christians on engaging culture thoughtfully and biblically, urging a balance of grace and truth, creativity, and a spirit of inquiry. As we close out the month of February, it's time to look forward to "March Madness" and some exciting basketball. A man who talks about the sport in the daily podcasts he hosts is my guest this week. A worship arts college professor by day...we talk about sports helping people get to know Jesus...controversial court storming lately in college basketball...his passion for music ministry...our favorite team UNC, and more. (2:35) Isaac Schade, host of "Locked on College Basketball" (and same one for the Tar Heels too), talks about why people love the sport, the parity, and why have there been more upsets this season. (7:52) With a Duke star having a minor injury after Wake Forest upset them and fans stormed the court...should it be banned or regulated? It's been a national debate. Isaac has some ideas, but not ones that take the magic away for students. From aiming to be a pro baseball player, (13:08) how did he shift from that dream to writing about sports and focusing on music? God used that sport, he says, to get him to certain school where he got his ministry degree. And he believes God is using his sports media jobs for Isaac to be a witness, shine a light. In his younger years as a worship pastor, he and friends also put out an album and toured as the "Isaac Schade Band." His wife is also in ministry as the community impact minister at their church in Missouri. (22:10) With all these jobs - his main one being professor at Ozark Christian College in Joplin MO - it's about finding a balance, putting his family first, watching plenty of college basketball too. Talking about that sport on podcasts, he hopes, can lead to faith conversations as well. Isaac loves how sports can connect us! Making a trip earlier this week to Chapel Hill NC, (30:04) he talks about the atmosphere at the Dean Dome, it being surreal rubbing shoulders with Carolina basketball legends, watching a friend's JV team play on the famed court, then seeing RJ Davis scoring a record 42 points - the most scored by anyone ever in that arena. (39:40) Hosting the podcasts also helps him relate to students at his college, while helping him better teaching technology related to music/worship. Born in England, Isaac's parents were missionaries. (44:16) We close out our chat with some of his predictions, hopes for the last few weeks of this college basketball season and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, saying he thinks the upcoming NCAA Tournament will be "bonkers." (55:00) And I finish the episode with a prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. How do you advocate without being an activist in the military? Are they separate?  Can you rock the boat without tipping it over? How do you move the needle on inclusion in spaces that are dead set against your presence?  How do you criticize a policy and maintain your obligation to the chain of command from leadership?  How do you use media to tell your story when seeking a broader change? We will address these critical topics as I chatted with Blake Dremann about how he succeeded on active duty and became a face of a cause. At the same time, the politicians debated what was then (and still is) a controversial issue. He has taught me so much in my advocacy journey and how to push for change correctly. Commander Blake Dremann serves as the Supply Officer and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul – Logistics Deputy Director at Fleet Readiness Center – East in Cherry Point, NC. Commander Dremann is a native of St. Louis, MO.  He is a 2003 graduate from Ozark Christian College, received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, in 2006, and attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA. Dremann's operational assignments include Supply Officer, USS Maine (SSBN 741), earning Maine's second Logistics Excellence Award and recipient of the 2015 Vice Admiral Robert F. 8. Do All Religions Lead To Heaven?

This is a very common question, and at first glance it kind of makes sense. If all religions help people be morally good, then it would only make sense that they all lead to the same place in regards to the after-life. The problem with this idea is that it's a very offensive position to every religion. You see, every religion is based upon absolute beliefs that are unique to each religion. For example, the God of the Koran is very different then the God of the Bible. The purpose of humans is starkly different in Buddhism then how the Bible describes our people. A quick, intellectually honest, examination of other religions will reveal these profound differences. What this means is that we need to constantly be deepening our faith, and understanding how the truths of the Bible build a strong foundation for our lives. It also means that it's helpful to understand what other religions believe so that we can better realize why Jesus is truly the best; better then any other person, religion or philosophy! To learn more about this challenging question we've invited Dr. Daniel McCoy from Renew.org to address it. Daniel is the editorial director for Renew.org as well as an online adjunct instructor for Ozark Christian College. He has a bachelor's in theology (Ozark Christian College), master of arts in apologetics (Veritas International University), and PhD in theology (North-West University, South Africa). His books include the Popular Handbook of World Religions (general editor), Real Life Theology: Fuel for Effective and Faithful Disciple Making (co-general editor), Mirage: 5 Things People Want From God That Don't Exist, and The Atheist's Fatal Flaw (co-authored with Norman Geisler). Ask you can see, Daniel has the credentials to speak well on this topic. Take a few minutes and listen to part eight of Asking For A Friend, you will be glad you did.

Guest: Tami Peterson, Founder and CEO of Life Architects Life Architects: Designing Solutions for Life and Leadership Tami is a designer by vocation and has been creating lesson plans, curricula, and experiences her whole life. She holds an undergraduate degree in Christian Education from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO, and an MA in Leadership, Theology, and Society from Regent College in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Her occupational titles have included elementary, middle, and high school teacher, librarian, admissions director, career coach, and director of college advising. Her title at Life Architects is Founder and Creative Engagement Officer where she designs and directs the projects we work on and helps everyone flourish by connecting with individuals, families, and institutions. Tami is married and has two adult children. One of the amazing and important resources of a private Christian school is that it can be a safe place to ask questions, to wrestle with important life issues - your family should also be a place where children are asking questions - and that you, as their parents, are seeking to listen and learn from them and with them! How do we start to train our children in “the way they should go”? Start by just paying attention “See and Say” - when you see something in your children, communicate that to them - encourage them by telling them the things that you see that God has created in our children Some things that you can identify in your children that reflect the nature of God: God's order and design - do your children love to bring order out of chaos? God's desire to seek and save the lost - do your children love to save lost puppies? God's creativity - do your children love to create new things and beauty? God's healing and restoring - do your children enjoy helping others? How do we equip our children to learn from the pains and sorrows of life instead of looking to help them avoid all pain and only seek pleasure? It's difficult to allow our children to struggle, especially in a world that pushes everyone to be “elite.” How do we develop a “learner mentality” - which means that we allow them to fail, so that they can learn from that failure - and that they can learn there are things they are not good at?! Remember that all children are “wired” differently - and just because our current culture advances one particular area doesn't mean that our children are wired to be successful in that area. If we allow our culture to define what is valuable, then our children will be defined by our culture. We should define our children by God's design for them - and equip them to be all that God has designed for them to be - even if that means that their vocation does not command a great deal of money! Do we want our children to define their success and happiness by God's design for their lives or by what the world says is important? Scripture gives several warnings against the “love” of money, the pursuit of money - God's Word frames us as “stewards” of resources - time, talents, and treasure - that ALL belongs to God, and we are to use what He's given us for His greater glory! We've reached the summit of the first of two biblical mountains and find ourselves standing on the peak of the Old Testament, a peak called Malachi. This ancient prophet speaking to an ancient people about ancient problems concerning ancient laws and regulations can initially seem hugely irrelevant to modern followers of Jesus Christ. But, as our series has repeatedly demonstrated, first impressions can be deceiving. "From the Book of Malachi readers learn that God's standards for charity and justice far exceed those exemplified by his people after their rescue from a strange land. And through penetrating use of rhetorical questions, the Lord exposes the rationalizations of his people, particularly the stinginess of his priests. "Sadly, not much has changed. His followers still need the reminder to stop squeezing, wrenching, grasping, and clutching. And the reminder even comes with a promise that if we devote ourselves to the Lord—to doing justice and mercy in his name—we have the hope that the sun of righteousness will arise with healing in its wings" (Glahn, Chai With Malachi, ix–x). Mike Ackerman is a professor of New Testament and Church Planting at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri, where he has served for ten years. During his time in ministry, Mike has taught through much of the biblical canon including the section we are talking about today, the prophetic book of Malachi. In fact, his teaching on this text, along with several other sections of Scripture, can be found on Right Now Media and YouTube.

Allow me to introduce Annette Todd, my lifelong friend who is literally taking the world by storm. After concluding her junior year at Ozark Christian College of the Bible this May, she plans to intern with the English Language Institute in China, ELIC, by spending her summer in Southeast Asia and the Middle East teaching English. Her optimism for education, Korean lattes, foreign exchange student friends, and canoeing are without question. This girl is totally globally minded and has a heart for all things international. The most amazing part of her story is that God laid this love for world on her heart and she is so bravely choosing to be faithful in following Him in this calling. From her blonde hair to the fact she is pursuing a bachelors degree in Intercultural Studies and Bible, she is exudes beauty in every way. This long overdue FaceTime chat in catching up with Annette has brought me such joy. I seriously, have adored her all of my life and I am for certain you will as well.
