Meta has called an emergency arbitration hearing over a tell-all memoir by Facebook's former Director of Global Public Policy. The author, Sarah Wynn Williams, has had to cancel all her book promotion…including coming on Offline this week. Jon and Max protest Sarah's gag order by delving into her book, Careless People, and platforming her allegations of sexual harassment, the company's role in Myanmar's genocide, and its supplicant relationship with the Chinese Communist Party. Then, the guys discuss whether humans have passed peak brain power, and why Sam Seder's appearance in a Jubilee video has everything Gavin Newsom's podcast is missing.

The global stablecoin legislation discussion is increasing every day, but if you have a framework in Singapore, that's independent from the EU and the U.S., it defeats the whole purpose of having a stablecoin that's supposed to be frictionless and make global payments easier. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we explore the latest developments in international efforts to reach a global treaty on plastic pollution.  In late April, more than 170 countries gathered in Ottawa, Canada, to negotiate a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution with a view to agreeing on a global treaty by the end of 2024. The countries aim to reach a deal in the next gathering slated to take place Nov. 25 through Dec. 1 in Busan, South Korea.   Today we're covering the outcome of the recent Ottawa treaty talks, the issues that remain to be hashed out, and what needs to happen between now and the final round of negotiations.    We talk with Erin Simon, Vice President and Head of Plastic Waste and Business at international conservation organization WWF, which together with The Ellen MacArthur Foundation convened the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty. Erin tells us that countries have a lot of details left to work out in ad hoc meetings in the coming months and are effectively "pulling an all-nighter" between now and Busan. To understand how one big company that uses plastics in its products is approaching this topic, we speak to Darci Vetter, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Public Policy at food, snack and beverage company PepsiCo, which is part of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty. "We definitely want to see those product design requirements, those common definitions, the principles, and as much specificity around extended producer responsibility and waste management — those are very important to us, and global rules that can set the stage for scalability within markets are critical," Darci tells us.  At the same time, "we know that the countries around the table are starting from very, very different places," she says. "So there will need to be some of that flexibility."  We also talk with Stewart Harris, Senior Director of Global Plastics Policy at the trade group American Chemistry Council. Stewart says that one outstanding question for governments is which measures are going to be legally binding and which will be voluntary.  Want to learn more about this topic? There's a growing recognition of the importance of tailoring social programmes to meet these specific needs, but we're also becoming more aware of how these programmes may inadvertently perpetuate gender norms, assuming women's roles in work and caregiving. Can social protection systems be a catalyst for change? Can they challenge the very structures and norms that perpetuate gender inequalities? The Problem with Unregulated Call Labeling Analytics Engines, Numeracle Podcast: Verified Identity directly to call recipients without relying on intermediaries. Even in the shadow of the STIR/SHAKEN effort and several public and private sector initiatives, illegal robocalling continues to bedevil legitimate use cases, legitimate corporate, government and NGO operators of outbound calling operations. Numeracle is an industry pioneer and leader with actionable solutions for legal callers that prioritizes their calling identity as the foundation to restoring trust in the voice channel and to their calls by removing barriers, like improper spam labels, from harming their phone numbers. In this podcast, we visit with Keith Buell, General Counsel and Head of Global Public Policy, who walks us through his organization's comments to the FCC and offers us a better understanding of Numeracle's vision: Verified Identity directly to call recipients without relying on intermediaries. “We've gone from an industry where carriers have a duty to deliver calls with 99.999% accuracy to an industry that favors overzealous blocking and labeling without consequence to the blocker,” says Buell. On August 9th, 2023, Numeracle filed comments in response to the FCC's Seventh Report and Order, Eighth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, and Third Notice of Inquiry in the matter of ‘Advanced Methods to Target and Eliminate Unlawful Robocalls.' A central point, explains Buell: “The FCC should not allow the AEs to insert themselves into the call flow, regardless of whether the call originator or recipient wants them there, and give the AEs carte blanche to make errors and then charge to fix those errors.” Numeracle has offered to provide Verified Identity data to help the analytics with an additional vetted source by which to identify good actors apart from the bad. Numeracle is an industry pioneer and leader with actionable solutions for legal callers that prioritizes their calling identity as the foundation to restoring trust in the voice channel and to their calls by removing barriers, like improper spam labels, from harming their phone numbers. Numeracle's Entity Identity Management™ (EIM) platform puts enterprise brands, BPOs, and service providers in direct control of their identity, which we vet and verify. Our EIM platform can also be used to manage branded communications, to improve call reputation with blocking and labeling prevention and spam label remediation, and we provide visibility into call display to ensure brand identity is presented as intended, with transparency and consistency. Our KYC-based identity vetting and verification is the cornerstone of the platform; developed in support of evolving federal regulations and telecom standards. The Road to Autonomy
Episode 104 | Understanding Congestion with Data, A Conversation with Avery Ash, INRIX

The Road to Autonomy

Avery Ash, Head of Global Public Policy and Product Strategy, INRIX joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss how data can help cities and DOTs (Department of Transportations) better understand congestion and how to properly plan for it. The conversation begins with Avery discussing how INRIX gathers anonymous data from 500 million vehicles, mobile devices, mobile apps, parking lot operators, mobile carriers and smart meters all in real-time.Expanding their data gathering capabilities, INRIX recently announced a partnership with GM where data from 15 million vehicles will be used in a collaborative manner to create Safety View. This product leverage the promise of connected vehicles to improve safety planning in local communities. As local communities plan for safe road ways, data will play a vital role in determining the best way to improve safety. In Washington, D.C. for example, 20% of drivers travel at least 10 mph above the speed limit in school zones. Knowing this data, schools will be better prepared to implement safety solutions such solutions as speed bumps, crossing guards, lowering speed limits in surrounding neighborhoods and working with local law enforcement to increase the police presence. You can not expect one silver bullet solution that is going to solve this problem. – Avery AshOnce the new safety measures are put in place, schools can measure the impact of the changes thanks to the data. Data is also having an impact on how cities tackle the issue of congestion. Each year, INRIX publishes their Annual Global Traffic Scorecard and this year the company reported that the average American driver lost 36 hours in 2021 due to congestion. With all of this data being gathered, how can cities effectively use the data to reduce traffic? That is the million dollar question. In London which is the world's most congested city, where drivers lost 148 hours to congestion in 2021, the city has not figured out how to effectively reduce traffic even as the city has a daily £15 congestion tax. New York City is currently debating on whether to follow London's lead and introduce a congestion tax. But NYC has a crime problem that three quarters of New Yorkers have called a very serious problem. Crime is driving New Yorkers tourists alike to single occupancy vehicles out of an abundance of caution. When planning for congestion, it's important to take into account a variety of data points and not just rely on one source of data. It's really important to enter into these sorts of policy changes with eyes wide open and with a willingness and frankly a plan for how you are going to measure the impact. – Avery AshCould autonomous vehicle drop-off and pick-up zones be a potential solution in the future as AVs scale and are deployed in cities around the world? Grayson and Avery discuss drop-off and pick-up zones as a potential solution for congestion in cities. Wrapping up the conversation, Avery shares his opinion on the best way cities can prepare for the large scale deployment of autonomous vehicles. The first step is to get a really clear understanding of how your roadways are currently being used and what behavior looks like across your road networks, across all road users. – Avery AshFollow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Tuesday, August 30, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Since then, he has held leadership roles in the intersections between tech, law and policy at organisations including the Singapore Ministry of Communications and Information. The switch from the public sector to the private sector was an exciting journey for Royce. Shifting from public service to a Chinese tech MNC was definitely challenging but he has no regrets - the opportunity has broadened his exposure, especially to the Chinese market. When asked what’s the most important thing he learned while being a parent, Royce says it’s the need to be more patient and nurturing to his daughter. He is also able to apply this at work as he tries to be more understanding to his teams while making sure quality standards are met. Growing his network has also been a key responsibility in his work. He has a healthy and genuine way of approaching this as he invests in getting to know people, rather than treat the process as a transaction. Royce has truly developed to become more courageous and compassionate as a result of being a parent in tech.
