After wrongful conviction, exoneration brings freedom but not healing. Chris Mumma, Executive Director of the NC Center on Actual Innocence, joins host Amber Nimocks to discuss the unique challenges faced by those released after years of wrongful imprisonment. Inspired by Joseph Sledge, who took his own life five years after being exonerated following 37 years in prison, the center is creating the Joseph Sledge Houses of Healing—a first-of-its-kind transitional sanctuary where exonerees can decompress and begin healing with comprehensive support. The project, being built on Second Act Farm in rural Alamance County, aims to address the often-overlooked trauma of wrongful incarceration.Learn more about how you can support the center's new re-entry project at their website at www.nccai.org or at Second Act Farm. If a fire breaks out at your house, experts estimate you have 3 minutes to escape. That's far less time than 30 years ago. The reason: Synthetic materials that make up household items these days burn hotter, and faster, than older, heavier ones. One house fire in Alamance County broke out because someone put the wrong material jacket in a dryer.

In rural North Carolina, dog-whistle politics focused on scapegoating minorities for social and economic problems have long fueled racial resentment but have done little to address high poverty rates and rising inequality, says Alicia Walker-Patterson. This is why Walker-Patterson, deputy field director of Down Home North Carolina, works with other grassroots organizers to get residents in rural areas engaged in the political process and to show them that their voices matter. Since 2016, these progressive activists have organized areas like Alamance County and other parts of deep-red, rural North Carolina that have long been ignored by the Democratic Party. However, just going door to door and asking voters to support their cause doesn't make much of a difference, and that is why Down Home relies on deep canvassing, a strategic approach to canvassing that draws on active listening and asking non-judgmental questions to spark deep, meaningful conversations. In this on-the-ground report for our special series “Defending Democracy in the 2022 Midterm Elections,” TRNN's Jaisal Noor and Joshua Komer speak with members of Down Home North Carolina about how they are working to build working-class, grassroots power one voter at a time.Read the transcript of this report: https://therealnews.com/how-organizers-in-rural-north-carolina-are-bridging-racial-and-class-dividesPre-Production/Studio: Jaisal Noor, Joshua KomerPost-Production: Jaisal Noor, Joshua Komer, Cameron GranadinoThis story is part of a series that was made possible with the support of the Solutions Journalism Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
Alamance County, North Carolina, is probably best known for its defense of Confederate monuments and backing Republicans in every presidential campaign since Jimmy Carter. But an important grassroots fight for racial and economic justice is currently unfolding there. One of the leaders of that fight is Dreama Caldwell, a Black working mother who, in 2015, faced a $40,000 bail for a crime she didn't commit—now she is working to organize across racial and class lines to build grassroots power in rural areas that have been abandoned by the major political parties. In the latest installment of his investigative series “Defending Democracy in the 2022 Midterm Elections,” supported by the Solutions Journalism Network, TRNN's Jaisal Noor speaks with Caldwell about her story and her organizing work with Down Home North Carolina.Featured music courtesy of Joe Troop: “The Rise of Dreama Caldwell” by Joe TroopRead the transcript of this podcast: https://therealnews.com/jailed-for-a-crime-she-didnt-commit-dreama-caldwell-is-now-taking-on-the-systemPre-Production/Studio: Jaisal NoorPost-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

TJ Gwynn was born in Chapel Hill, NC and grew up in Burlington, NC which is in Alamance County. Basketball was the only organized sport he played until he got to middle school. He started in recreation and then started playing AAU when he was 10 years old. In high school, TJ also played football and track, but he said that was mainly so he could hang out with his friends. He did mention that it didn't hurt to get out of school early as well! Basketball was TJ's focus though and at 6'4” in 9th grade, he was making an immediate impact on the court. TJ said he was skinny, but tough due to his older brothers Brendon and Jamal. He started to get noticed by colleges in 9th grade when his high school won the state championship and TJ was named the tournament MVP. TJ got a lot of interest and offers, but decided to take his talent to Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU, TJ had a very good career, but learned that college basketball was a business. Amazingly, and TJ believes he is the only college player to experience this, he had three head coaches during his time at VCU. He discussed with Paul and Kevin the ups and downs of that experience. TJ ended by talking about his family.
Generalization of People is a Bigger Issue Than RacismRacism seems to be the hot topic at the moment, but for a congressional candidate running for congress in North Carolina, he sees things differently. Peter Boykin, who is the president of “Gays For Trump” and is running for Congress, joins “After Dark With Rob And Andrew” to talk about racism and how Republicans need to do a better job with its outreach efforts.Boykin said there are troubling issues with every group, but grouping them and saying the troubles affect the entire group isn't the best way to solve the problem. He said there should be community leaders who can identify issues within the groups and help to resolve them. The congressional candidate continued and said him being a gay man doesn't make him any less effective in identifying with issues of the people he hopes to represent. He, too, is concerned about jobs, as he has been without a job. He is concerned about abortions, as he feels it should not be a form of contraception. He is also concerned with gun rights and thinks that more people should learn gun safety. Other topics the congressional hopeful discussed with “After Dark” included election integrity, Critical Race Theory, and the polarization of both parties, and their inability to work together and compromise to get things done for the American people. He said if elected, he will try to work with Democrats when needed to get things done.Peter Boykin is a US Congressional Candidate for District 13 in North Carolina. The people of Snow Camp and Alamance County, NC, knew the Fogleman family well. The customers and neighbors of the family's country store also knew of their firstborn, Tom, having watched him grow up from boy to man. Those who knew him best, however, are the people who grew up alongside him and the people he watched grow up. We meet the man behind the name in episode 2 of A Country Store Killing.
On January 23, 2002, 61-year-old Tom Fogleman was brutally murdered in the country store his father built in 1940, in Snow Camp, NC. News of the killing rocked the Alamance County community and sparked heavy coverage of the murder within several news organizations. Over the next several years, numerous detectives worked the case, but failed to solve it. In February 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff's Office sent out another press release, continuing to ask for the public's help in the case, shortly after it was assigned to a new detective, who had never previously heard of the murder. In this episode of A Country Store Killing, we look back at the day Tom was killed and become acquainted with some of Tom's closest remaining family members.
Tom Fogleman was a quiet, meticulous, and generous man who managed his family's country store right off a small highway in Alamance County, North Carolina. He ran the kind of store where you could buy most anything with an IOU, that's just the way he did business. So who would brutally attack him hitting him more than 27 times in the head leaving him for dead on the floor of his store? It's a mystery nearly 20 years old. It's one of many cold cases, but this one is about to heat up as detectives put new eyes on the January 2002 murder.

Apparently, Ashely and David, the couple in question had some heated fun, then had a heated argument in which David demanded that Ashely leave her long term boyfriend, that we name Chester, for David because they have sex real good. Darien, Elijah, Alexander and Chris all flex their accent work something fierce. A good time will be had. Organizing in "No Chance Alamance" County This week on the show I'm speaking with three folks engaged in organizing in the rural Alamance County, North Carolina, and it's capital of Graham. All three work with the 501c4 political non-profit, DownhomeNC which in Alamance has been working on a range of engagements including running local candidates for office, doing get-out-the-vote work, sparking conversations with rural residents of the county, running a bail fund and working on bail reform, rent relief and operating food distribution. Dreama Caldwell, one of our guests, ran on a platform of bail reform to be the first Black woman elected to the County Commission, though she was not elected, is a mother, and as an Abolitionist has been working to abolish cash bail and change the condition for people of Color and poor folks as relates to the Alamance courts and jail. Sugalema is an organizer, a mom, and the daughter of undocumented parents from Mexico who's been living in Alamance for the last decade. Gwen is a mother from a white, working class background who has also worked to support Alamance organizers through Downhome on a number of campaigns. You can learn more about the organization at DownhomeNC.org and their various social media pages. As a side note, the folks who produce The Final Straw do not endorse electoralism as a strategy for lasting change or community power. We are anarchists. There are plenty of places you can go to find anarchist critiques of engaging in electoral politics, sometimes with anarchists or anti-authoritarians advocating limited engagement in elections but usually calling for abstention. Even though DownhomeNC is not an anarchist organization, we do feel like the experiences of Sugalema, Dreama and Gwen are important to share because they talk about the work of changing minds and building relationships in the rural south where an autonomous left or anarchist movement doesn't exist… like most of the world. They are intelligent and impassioned women doing hard work to grow community resistance and engagement. Abolition also includes the complicated work of decreasing the harm caused by systems of oppression like the police, courts, borders, white supremacy and capitalism while simultaneously building discourse against those institutions that impose harm. We really hope that listeners will get a lot from this conversation. Announcements Eric King updates Anarchist and antifascist prisoner Eric King caught covid at FCI Englewood, alongside over a hundred other prisoners, thanks to the ineptitude of his captors at the BOP who have been moving staff between Englewood and FCI Florence where an outbreak had been ongoing. His trial for defending himself from an attack by a prison officer has been pushed back to April of 2021. In good news, his mail ban appears temprorarily lifted and his website hosts his book list again. He's been able to receive letters, magazines and books for the first time in years. Check out the update at SupportEricKing.org and send Eric some love. To hear our interview with Eric from last year, visit our website. Xinachtli Parole Support "Xinachtli," as. many of you know, means literally in English, "Seed," or, as Comrade "X" likes to phrase, it from a prisoner's perspective, "Germinating Seed" and s/n Alvaro Luna Hernandez, is a Chicano/Mexicano-Anarchist Communist and Anti-Imperialist Internationally-recognized Political Prisoner, has suffered long enough from a (50-year) bogus Aggravated Assault conviction rife with racist civil rights abuse and judicial misconduct. The contrived & trumped-up Aggravated Robbery charge brought by Sheriff McDaniel without the authority of a warrant, was thrown out later at trial, but through prosecutorial chicanery, allowed the assault charge to stick being a paroled felon. The so-called Aggravated-Assault charge, which should've amounted to a 'misdemeanor,' occurred with his near-term pregnant wife nearby in their own front yard, as he, showing no demonstrative violent aggressive behavior, correctly disarmed the Sheriff as he drew his service revolver in anger as "Xinachtli" challenged his authority to attempt an arrest in a situation that could've proved lethal for all three, mother, baby, and most surely "Xinachtli" himself. The local authorities hated him and his family and his labor organizing in Brewster County, Alpine, Texas. Many of you already are familiar with this abuse of authority yarn, but, does bear repeating, as he is still held captive for this injustice in 'STG' (Security Threat Group) status, studying law and assisting other prisoners with their appeals, while continuously sharing, and germinating his revolutionary thoughts and ideals in cocoon-like solitary confinement, at the repressive TDCJ-CID James V. Allred Unit, 'Supermax' Gulag, in Iowa Park, Texas, marooned in the North Texas' Red River Valley. Texas prisons are now one of the nation's COVID-19 virus' 'hotspots,' and the courts are refusing to intervene, WHILE PRISONER DEAD BODIES PILE UP IN LOCAL MORGUES. "XINACHTLI" is an elderly person, with his life in danger. Presently, "Xinachtli" is preparing for his (1st) upcoming 'Parole Review Hearing,' on July 18, 2021. We are in need of help with a groundswell of support from the Prison Abolitionists, Human Rights, Indigenous, and Prison Activist Movement communities. TBPP suggests that FEW, clear & concise letters are preferred, to place in his case-file for review; lazy eyes is a disguise with TBPP Parole Panels. So, let's blast 'em with a barrage of letters to help us ensure that his 'Review' is an impartially-heard (Hearing?) by traditionally 'parole-stingy' Texas Board of Pardons & Parole Commissioners; and is a successful one. Try to include in the letter, that"Xinachtli," though, he has tested 'COVID-19 - negative,' and in recent months received a 'flu shot,' he has hypertension that's medicated, and is ostensibly cured of Hep-C, he nonetheless will be 69 years old next May 12th, 2021; so the Corona Virus danger rages on! Also include, a solid confirmation that there's a solid support system waiting, available opportunities of employment, residence, and transportation, as well as psychological/coping support and a period of adjustment, are all important - he's been in a solitary 'time-capsule, the worldwide 'spider' web has exploded on the social scene since his conviction in June of 1997. Please address all your Letters of Support for "Xinachtli" with his registered name, ALVARO LUNA HERNANDEZ, and prison number, TDCJ-CID#00255735 You can mail the letters to his lawyer: Allen D. Place Attorneys at Law 109 S. 7th Street Gatesville, TX, 76528 To hear Xinachtli telling his story in his own voice, check out our website.
