This episode, we finally get ourselves started on the Fifth Doctor era as the Master returns (again) to taunt our new Doctor in Castrovalva… heh heh heh…   Join us as we discuss just how young Peter Davison was when this was made, whether or not Adric was a little TOO excited at being tied up in the Master's web (or if it's just the harness), Tegan's need for “enormous thrust,” Bidmead's myriad weaknesses, and how the Master THINKS that he's a dom, but is clearly just a brat and all he wants is kisses (because he DESERVES them!)… this might be our most unhinged episode yet, to be honest.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). If you're a little old fashioned and prefer physical media (like our very own Anthony), you can also find on the Doctor Who Season 18 Blu Ray box set from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3RA2Bkl) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/43GFZGe)   Other media mentioned in this episode*: The Love Boat – Seasons 1-4 (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3EXmifW | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3tdIobl) The Stone Tape (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4j7oC6t | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/42ymOfF) All Creatures Great and Small: The Complete Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3FpbQ1J | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3iC2xm9) Sink or Swim: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4bNlrOl | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4hwmdR4) Buck Rogers in the 25th Century – The Complete Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3FM9XtN | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/32zijGQ) Blackadder: The Ultimate Edition (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/30sMUnN | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3BU2WoN) Chernobyl (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3gtrOuT | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3jfw9Uk) High Rise (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/4j3kLXR | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4ctN2nS) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (TV version) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3G6YCoH | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3m0qOSc) The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3nfEjMU | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3jwU4hv) The Collected Stories of Arthur C. As we've finally made it to the end of the Tom Baker era (a feat that has taken us close to two-and-a-half years!), we are once again joined by the 5th Watcher, R. Alan Siler, who guides us through our era-spanning retrospective for the longest-running (and arguably most popular) Doctor of all time!   Join us as we discuss the best stories to sum up each Producer during the era, whether RTD and Moffatt are right about non-contemporary/non-human companions (they're not), whether Tom stayed too long, whether we'd want an eighth season with Tom, and how Diana didn't read through her contract before joining the show. Of course, we take a look back at the highlights of some of our stats, before Alan guides us through a game of “Would You Rather…?”   Other media mentioned in this episode*: The James Bond Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3FWn6kg | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3DQB4lR) Moonbase 3 (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3xdCVRm | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3Mm13Fv) Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3aifha7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/2YtSYvx) Game of Thrones: The Complete Series (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3lRgVWD | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3aQhh9U) Austin Powers Triple Feature (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3G4NQit | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3vuHNyO) Harry Potter: Complete 8-Film Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3SdAHd5 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3oFjhZh) Looney Tunes – The Platinum Collection (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3Aov8z7 | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3nRkM7w) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (TV version) (Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3G6YCoH | Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3m0qOSc)   Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on Facebook and Instagram. Another season in the can! Season 18 done and dusted, and you know what that means… it's time for our customary season retrospective, in which we take a look back at the entirety of the season with our blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media. These are always a lot of fun for us to do, and we really hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as we did recording it!   Join us as we discuss how one of the new companions gets the best entrance ever through involuntary manslaughter, Romana's best (and worst) costumes, the Adric haters' club, Tegan's absolutely magnificent way of bursting onto the scene in Logopolis, the general incompetence of our heroes in killing vampires, and how this season creates one absolutely epic piece of fanwank. Of course, we also decide who gets the Dougie and who gets the Dickie, which is never a dull moment!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of this season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). How I Make Music
#065 Theme from We Fix Space Junk by Hedley Knights

How I Make Music

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2020 11:13

The piece of music featured in this episode is called Theme from We Fix Space Junk. It’s a playful and futuristic piece. I wrote it as the opening tune for the comedy sci-fi audio drama We Fix Space Junk, a story about two female repairmen who travel space fixing things (and trying not to get killed in the process.) The soundtrack conveys fun, adventure and an overall positivity, and this week we’ll look at some of the insights into why and how it was made. My name is Hedley Knights. I'm a composer from London, and this is How I Make Music. IN THIS EPISODE 01:53 Influences for the piece came from Tim Souster’s theme for the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy TV show and from historical 70s depictions of the future. 03:32 The piece was written entirely in MIDI, using no live instrumentation. This gives it a more digital, futuristic feel. I used a deliberately fake-sounding string patch from a program called Reason and layered it with a more realistic sample-based string library to give it both the retro feel and extra emotion. 04:52 For the drums in this piece, my free trial expired! I had to replace the drum sounds with a different patch, resulting in slightly different versions of the piece over time. 05:41 I use a technique called portamento to glide smoothly between notes. This roughly emulates a theremin, a really common instrument in vintage science fiction. 07:05 The drums and bass groove well together. The song is in 6/8, but at a faster tempo than most compositions in that time signature. The bass, kick drum and ride cymbal groove well together to really create a fun atmosphere to kick off each episode. 07:41 I wrote the piece in C major, which is usually attributed to happy and bright sounds. I included a Bb to give the melody a darker, almost bluesier feel. I feel this conveys the tone of We Fix Space Junk pretty well, being a comedy with a dark side. 08:31 The brass layer is a synth patch which has a triumphant fanfare sound. 08:58 Once I’d written all the instruments, I reamped them by running them through my Midas 80 analogue mixing desk. The random imperfections give the piece a real, retro feel. Beware of the Leopard: the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy podcast

In a sort-of belated Christmas special, the full panel of Danny, the Jons and Mark watch series 1, episode 1 of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV show, and invite you to watch along. The episode is available legally and for free courtesy of archive.org. Cue the episode up, and when you hear Mark count up from three - or is it down from three? - hit Play. Now and again there'll be a moment to pause, and if you're playing the drinking game, see how far into the episode you get before everyone's out of sync. Thanks for joining us throughout 2017. We'll be back in a couple of weeks with regular episodes, so until then, and as always, share and enjoy.
