ONE Championship former HW World Champ, Brandon ‘The Truth' Vera, currently runs his very own Philippines Alliance Training Center, developing the next generation of Filipino martial artists right where he got his own professional start training in submission grappling. His storied career climbing the ladder of the world of combat sports started out early while growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, where he competed as a collegiate wrestler with Old Dominion University. He went on to join the military's prestigious Greco-Roman wrestling team as a member of the US Air Force. Martin Nguyen is an Australian mixed martial arts fighter currently competing in the Lightweight, Featherweight and Bantamweight division of the ONE Fighting Championship. May 6-10, 2016 | The fifteenth Building Bridges Seminar, chaired by Professor Daniel A. Madigan, S.J., was held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and the Airlie Center in Warrenton, Virginia. On the first afternoon, a public panel discussion on "Monotheism and Its Complexities” featured Richard Bauckham, Asma Afsaruddin, Christoph Schwöbel, and Sajjad Rizvi providing an overview of the issues the seminar would entertain. Daniel Madigan, S.J., moderated the conversation. During the succeeding three days, selected texts from the Bible, the Qur’an and hadith, the Christian tradition, and the Islamic tradition were studied in plenary and small group sessions. Each morning, the day’s theme and texts were introduced by a lecturer and a respondent. Thus Richard Bauckham spoke on “Worship of the one God in the Biblical witness and the complexities it raises,” with Maria Massi Dakake responding; Asma Afsaruddin on “The affirmation of God’s unity and unicity in Qur’an and hadith and the questions it poses,” with Sidney Griffith responding; Christoph Schwöbel, on “Grappling with the unity question in the elaboration of Christian doctrine,” with Martin Nguyen responding; and Sajjad Rizvi, on “Safeguarding tawhid in the elaboration of the Islamic tradition,” with Janet Soskice responding. The 2016 seminar’s topic, “Affirming the Unity of God,” was perhaps the most central and challenging theological theme that Christian-Muslim dialogue has to address. In previous years, Building Bridges considered subjects such as prayer, justice and rights, religion and science, death and the afterlife, which can be addressed by each tradition almost in isolation from the other. However, on the question of monotheism, Muslims and Christians have been directly and forcefully engaged with one another from the beginning of the Islamic tradition in the Qur’an.

The famous Abu’l-Qasim al-Qushayri (d. 465/1072) is well known as one of the most influential figures in the formative period of Sufism. He was part of a network of prominent Sufis in Nishapur that were shaping the competing forms of spirituality during the eleventh century. Due to this noteworthy role in Sufism al-Qushayri’s work has rarely been examined within the contexts of the concurrent and intimately connected traditions with which he was also engaged. Martin Nguyen, Assistant Professor in the Religious Studies Department at Fairfield University and founder of the great site Islamicana, has meticulously reconstructed the nexus of al-Qushayri’s intellectual field through a close examination of his Qur’an commentary, Lata’if al-isharat (Subtleties of the Signs). In Sufi Master and Qur’an Scholar: Abu’l-Qasim al-Qushayri and the Lata’if al-isharat (Oxford University Press, 2012), part of the Oxford Qur’an series in association with The Institute of Ismaili Studies, Nguyen draws al-Qushayri’s legal training in the Shafi’i madhhab and his theological positioning the Ash’ari school to the surface. He also demonstrates that al-Qushayri had a continuing exegetical corpus and was long committed to Qur’anic commentary. As the final iteration of his tafsir, the Lata’if points to al-Qushayri’s alignment with a Nishapuri collective of exegetical hermeneutics. Some of the various issues Nguyen’s close reading explores include muhkam and mutashabih (clear and ambiguous) Qur’an verses, naskh (abrogation), the ascension narrative (Q. 53.1-18) comparing al-Qushayri’s Kitab al-Mi’raj and the Lata’if, the disconnected letters in the Qur’an (al-huruf al-muqatta’a), the narrative of Job, anthropomorphism, and the Master and aspirant (Shaykh and murid) relationship.
