Send us a textUnleashing Sales Potential: The Behavioral Edge with Mike Crotta & Geoff Miller (Part 2)In this powerful follow-up episode of "The Selling Podcast," we once again welcome insights from former professional baseball player Mike Crotta and Geoff Miller, author of "Intangibles," as we delve deeper into the psychological and behavioral aspects of sales success. Building upon our previous discussion on mental toughness, we explore how understanding and leveraging behavioral assessments can unlock untapped potential and drive winning performance in sales teams.Mike and Geoff share their expertise on how to identify and match potential hires and existing team members to roles where their natural behavioral tendencies will thrive. They discuss the importance of recognizing individual strengths and tailoring coaching and development strategies accordingly. This moves beyond simply looking at past performance and focuses on inherent traits that predict future success in specific sales functions. We then shift our focus to the crucial distinction between playing to win versus playing for fun. Drawing parallels from the competitive world of professional sports, Mike and Geoff emphasize the importance of a results-oriented mindset in sales. While enjoyment is valuable, the ultimate goal is to achieve and exceed targets. We explore how to cultivate a winning mentality within sales teams and align individual efforts with overarching business objectives. The conversation then turns to the challenges of overthinking and getting "stuck in your head." Mike and Geoff highlight that when facing pressure or complex situations, it's essential to take a step back and focus on the long-term perspective. By visualizing the ultimate goals and understanding that short-term anxieties are often transient, sales professionals can regain clarity and make more strategic decisions.A key element for effective team management and individual performance is the explicit expression of expectations. Mike and Geoff underscore the importance of clearly articulating what is required of each team member, leaving no room for ambiguity. Once expectations are clearly understood, holding individuals accountable for their performance becomes a fair and necessary step in driving results and fostering a culture of responsibility. Finally, we address the common pitfall of overanalyzing the "right" way to do things. Mike and Geoff explain that excessive focus on theoretical perfection can often paralyze individuals and hinder their ability to execute the fundamental aspects of their roles effectively. The key lies in understanding the core principles of sales and then allowing individual strengths and styles to flourish within that framework.Throughout the episode, Mike and Geoff emphasize the importance of maintaining a balanced drive – a focused determination to succeed without succumbing to burnout or neglecting other crucial aspects of professional and personal well-being. This episode provides actionable strategies for sales leaders and individual contributors alike to leverage behavioral insights, cultivate a winning mindset, and optimize performance for long-term success.Scott SchlofmanMike Williams - Cell 801-635-7773 #sales #podcast #customerfirst #relationships #success #pipeline #funnel #sales success #selling #salescoach

Send us a textIn this powerful episode of "The Selling Podcast," Mike and Scott dive deep into the critical role of mental toughness in achieving sales success. We're thrilled to welcome two exceptional guests: Mike Crotta, a former professional baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Geoff Miller, the acclaimed author of "Intangibles," a book that breaks down the mental game in baseball and beyond. Together, we draw direct parallels between the mental fortitude required in professional sports and the resilience needed to thrive in the demanding world of sales.Mike shares his firsthand experiences navigating the pressures of professional baseball, highlighting the mental strategies he employed to stay focused, overcome setbacks, and maintain a winning mindset. Geoff, drawing from his expertise in the "intangibles" of athletic performance, unpacks key mental skills such as focus, composure, and the ability to bounce back from adversity. We then bridge these insights directly to the sales arena, exploring how sales professionals can cultivate similar mental toughness to:Handle Rejection: Learn techniques to view rejection as a learning opportunity rather than a personal failure, building resilience and preventing discouragement.Maintain Focus: Discover strategies to stay present and laser-focused on the task at hand, especially amidst distractions and long sales cycles.Manage Pressure: Understand how to perform effectively under pressure, whether it's facing a tight deadline or a high-stakes negotiation.Build Confidence: Explore methods for cultivating unwavering self-belief and maintaining a positive attitude, even during challenging periods.Stay Persistent: Learn how to develop the mental stamina to consistently follow up and persevere in the face of obstacles.Mike and Geoff provide actionable strategies and real-world examples, drawing from their experiences in high-pressure environments, to equip sales professionals with the mental tools needed to stay in the game, overcome challenges, and ultimately achieve peak performance. This episode is a masterclass in developing the mental edge that separates good salespeople from the truly great.Scott SchlofmanMike Williams - Cell 801-635-7773 #sales #podcast #customerfirst #relationships #success #pipeline #funnel #sales success #selling #salescoach

Geoff shares how the adoption of hoshin kanri and A3 problem-solving has helped the company maintain strategic focus and build organizational capability. Geoff offers a candid reflection on his leadership transformation, underscoring the importance of perseverance and continuous learning, even in the face of significant disruption.  Key takeaways include: Hoshin Kanri enabled Grand Rapids Chair to build stability in critical daily management measures like safety, quality, and reliability. The catchball process for cascading strategic goals fostered alignment and buy-in across the management team. A3 problem-solving empowered employees across departments to tackle large, complex challenges and drive meaningful change. Sustaining a lean transformation requires personal commitment from leadership to model the problem-solving mindset and tools. Developing human capability in problem-solving is essential for realizing the full benefits of lean.

Given the choice Peter Morgan would rather be spending time with his horses than standing around with a mobile phone. He very kindly made an exception for us last week, and we've been able to capture some of his recollections of a life with horses. Peter talks firstly about his talented galloper Burrandana whose first up win at Gundagai recently proved he's on track for a TAB Highway mission. The veteran trainer talks of Burrandana's troublesome feet. Peter says he actually bred the horse. He looks back on Burrandana's form line with special mention of the Wagga win that was taken off him. A substance used on another horse in the stable showed up in Burrandana's post race swab. Pete says a very hefty fine ensued. The trainer talks of Burrandana's five TAB Highway attempts. He hasn't been able to win one yet, but he's knocking on the door. Peter speaks of Burrandana's owners, long time clients David Lloyd and Geoff Miller. He mentions another recent winner from the stable in Unique Prince who's due back in work following a break. Peter looks back on early days in Melbourne under the tutelage of his grandfather Frank Kernaghan. He says Frank was a skilful trainer who was rarely without a handy horse. He had one very talented hurdler. He says one piece of advice offered by his grandfather has remained with him over half a century. Peter was apprenticed to Frank Kernaghan and had a short stint as a jockey. He rates his talents in the saddle. He talks of the legendary jockeys he got to know in the 1960's. He says one of them took an interest in his progress. During his apprenticeship at Flemington Peter got to know some famous trainers. He makes mention of a couple. Peter says he eventually borrowed boxes from his grandfather to get his own training career under way. He runs through a list of horses who helped to get him up and running as a professional trainer. Peter moved to Albury in 1974 and brought with him a promising apprentice jockey. The trainer acknowledges other talented jockeys who've given him good service since moving to the Riverina. Peter says the art of horse training has changed dramatically in recent times. He talks of the accessibility of racetracks from his Wagga base. Peter mentions some of the trainers he's most admired. In naming the best horse he's seen in six decades, the veteran plumps unequivocally for Tobin Bronze. We share a few memories of the great horse. The laconic trainer doesn't waste words in taking us back over his journey in racing.

In late spring, coyote pups spend their first few weeks of life hunkered in dens — some of which are tucked in Minnesota's various urban parks. And the pups are just about to make moves - leaving the den with their parents for a new home base. A research team based at the University of Minnesota is monitoring some of these animals to learn more about how coyotes, foxes and humans interact in the Twin Cities. Geoff Miller has been working on this project as a Ph.D. candidate since it began about four years ago. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Miller about what he's learned so far. Geoffrey Miller studies the evolutionary psychology of sex and since sex is the cornerstone of evolution his work ends up having implications that affect pretty much everything. If you've wondered why women's evolutionary programming makes them spend more time shopping and makes men want to get the heck out of the store as quickly as possible, then, in this podcast, Geoffrey Miller will tell you why. If you've wondered why people buy cars like Hummers when they are so wasteful, it's precisely because being wasteful is the key to attracting a mate…and in this podcast Geoffrey Miller will tell you why. Besides writing an excellent book called Spent about how consumerism taps into evolutionary psychology, Geoffrey Miller co-hosts a podcast with Tucker Max (yes, Tucker Max) called The Mating Grounds where they use the latest evolutionary psychology to help listeners become the men women want. From that podcast, they have now written a book called Mate. Whether you're looking to understand consumerism, mating or some other aspect of why we do what we do then Geoffrey Miller is one of the best resources on the planet. In this Q&A episode, Tucker Max, Nils Parker, and Dr. Geoff Miller break apart this question, the details he gave, and the assumptions he is making. They explain how if you see a guy who is to be subservient to or "pussy whipped" by his girlfriend or wife, you are only looking at a small part of their relationship and making assumptions based just on that. It's unlikely that you know their entire relationship history and all the dynamics going on.  Sometimes, a woman is just awful or the man has given up too much control and dominance in a relationship (No More Mr. Nice guy is a great analysis of this problem). But ask yourself, "Why is this happening in the first place and why is he still with her?" Staying in that relationship is a choice that as a man you have to take responsibility for.

Tucker Max, Dr. Geoff Miller, and Nils Parker explain the four most common reasons why girls flake, cancel, or don't show up to a date; why this will (and should) happen a certain percentage of times, and why looking at it as "flaking" and blaming the woman is the wrong mindset.     They also give some harsh but much needed advice on throwing out your pickup ebooks and bootcamp binders. What Should I Do If I'm Balding Or Graying?

This Q&A is for men who are are worried about going bald or gray and losing hair. There are two key takeaways: great hair doesn't matter as much as you think and the simple solution to be more attractive it to shave your head.   Tucker Max, Dr. Geoff Miller, and Nils Parker talk about how there's not much you can do to prevent hair loss, but that's OK because women don't really care. Dr. Miller mentions it's not even in the top 30 most important things that women want. However, awful hair like a comb-over or bad hair piece can lower your mate value.    And think about it from an evolutionary perspective: If women were turned off by baldness, we would have evolved not to get bald because those men would not have mated. The fact that we evolved this way means baldness doesn't matter much to women. Your bald ancestors still got laid.

(38:45) Dr. Miller uses science to debunk The Alpha Male myth. (46:35) And so much more... What do women really want in a man? It seems to be a question men have asked themselves and have been trying to answer for centuries. If you're tired of wondering and you want actual answers to help you better understand, connect and have quality relationships with women then have a listen to today's show. Our guest is Dr. Geoff Miller, is evolutionary psychologist at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque and author of several books including The Mating Mind. Presently he is teaming up with Tucker Max to produce podcast episodes for Mating Grounds and a book on the same subject: understanding what women want and how to give it to them. Listen in for details on all of that and so much more on the 334th episode of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: To understand what Dr. Miller shares in today's episode it's helpful to understand his background and his line of studies. He is an evolutionary psychologist which means he spends his time understanding topics like human sexuality, mate choice, and human emotions to name a few. He says he has long been fascinated by women's psychology and why women chose the men they do and the links those choices have to our history as humans. And one common thread he has found is that attraction transcends all other boundaries, certain ways of attracting a mate are not exclusive to particular cultures and countries. It is primal and instinctive within humans. Attraction doesn't have a secret language, anyone can learn it and use it wherever they live. We get into several useful applications of mating behavior in this episode, the first of which is the body types women are most attracted to. Dr. Miller says women in general find tall and lean men most attractive, they want the Olympic swimmer-type look. They prefer men who look capable and athletic, but still have some body fat so long as it's not abdominal fat which women are turned off by. So why does it seem like women like the super-buff gym rats? During their most fertile times of the month women find more masculine traits attractive, like big muscles. You can use this to your advantage if you aren't a big muscle guy. If a girl says no when you ask her out one week, try again the next week. It could just be where she is in her cycle. Another fascinating topic we dive into is how to know when a woman is at her most fertile. It seems men know this on a subconscious level, Dr. Miller gives us an example of a study done that showed women who were professional lap dancers made more money during their peak ovulation times (ie their most fertile time of the month) then they did at another time of the month. But if the woman you have your eye on isn't a lap dancer, there are other cues you can look for. You'll need to know her a bit for this but watch how she dresses. It's been scientifically shown that women who are closest to their peak fertile times will dress more provocatively, wear red, wear lipstick or more makeup than usual and will wear more jewelry than usual. Sort of "peacocking" female-style that seems to happen about 10-14 days into her cycle. Dr. Geoff also explains a woman's cycle and the time of the month when she will generally be most fertile. He gives us reasons why we as men need to know about hormonal birth control and how it impacts a woman's choice in a man - there is scientific evidence that shows women on hormonal birth control choose different man than if they are not using hormones. An important lesson to know whether you're dating or in a relationship. He also gives us tips on how to attract women whether we're wealthy or poor, the important role language plays in dating and mating, and what we should be focusing on to attract quality women (and it's not more time in the gym!). It was a pleasure to have Dr. Miller on the show, I want to thank him for joining us and to thank you for being here too. Enjoy the episode and we'll see you next time. THANKS DR. MILLER!
