The Straits Times Index was up 1.02% at 3,833.95 points at 12.20pm Singapore time, with a value turnover of S$731.19M in the broader market. In terms of counters to watch, we have Keppel Real Estate Investment Trust, after the Reit manager reported today a net property income growth of 13.3 per cent year-on-year to S$54.6 million in Q1 of 2025. Meanwhile, developments in the US remain in focus given a change in stance by the Trump administration on the Federal Reserve and on trade with China. That’s as US President Donald Trump said overnight that he had “no intention” of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, while signalling a more conciliatory approach to the trade war with China. On Market View, Money Matters’ finance presenter Chua Tian Tian unpacked the developments with Thilan Wickramasinghe, Head of Equity Research, Maybank Securities.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, host Tyler Chisholm sits down with returning guest, Jeremy McCrea. As Managing Director of Equity Research at BMO Capital Markets, Jeremy brings over two decades of experience in the energy sector—and a refreshingly candid take on what it really means to be a better energy investor right now. Together, they unpack how uncertainty around tariffs, political volatility, and market sentiment is affecting investment decisions, and why many Canadian energy companies are being undervalued despite strong fundamentals. Jeremy also breaks down the three key traits he looks for when assessing a company: strong balance sheets, proven economics (like two-times payout), and early-stage innovation that hasn't hit the market radar yet. This episode is brought to you by clearmotive marketing. Shares of all three Singapore banks extended their decline, as potential US Federal Reserve rate cuts and the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs weigh on the banks’ outlook. Yesterday, OCBC Bank led the losses, dropping 4.3 percent to close below $15 for the first time since October 2024. UOB slid 3.3 percent and DBS Bank also fell 3.3 percent. The three local banks, which form a heavy weighting on the Straits Times Index, have pulled the overall benchmark down 2 percent. The STI is down 10% for the year. Meanwhile, total securities turnover value on the Singapore Exchange has increased 25 percent year on year to S$29.7 billion in March, with the STI and volumes across multiple asset classes hitting record levels. What do we make use of these situations? Today we had a fantastic session with Neil Mehta, Managing Director and Head of North American Natural Resources Equity Research, alongside his colleague Carly Davenport, Vice President of Equity Research, with Goldman Sachs. Neil joined Goldman in 2008 and oversees research coverage across oil and gas, utilities, midstream, metals and mining, and clean technology, while also leading coverage for large cap energy equities. Carly joined Goldman in 2016 and covers U.S. utilities. She previously covered SMID cap refiners and was a member of the integrated oils & refiners team. With energy earnings season wrapping up, we wanted to reflect on key takeaways. We were fortunate to host Neil and Carly, whose coverage and breadth of knowledge made for a fascinating discussion. In our discussion, Neil first provides a detailed overview of key trends driving market performance, highlighting a shift from a broad sectoral view to a more focused approach on stock selection and performance dispersion. He emphasizes the significant performance differences among companies based on operational execution, capital allocation, and management quality. On the oil and gas side, Neil notes that range-bound commodity prices have reinforced the need for disciplined positioning, with an emphasis on capital efficiency and balance sheet strength. Carly walks us through key trends in utilities, including the surging focus on power demand driven by AI, data centers, and industrial expansion. We explore the growing interconnection between energy and technology markets and its impact on investor behavior, including how generalist investors are increasingly shaping energy sector valuations by focusing on growth and ESG considerations. We discuss the evolving natural gas landscape, the mounting pressure on power prices, and shifting attitudes among tech companies toward energy sourcing, with reliability and speed to market taking precedence over sustainability. We examine trends of investors seeking more access to company boards, the importance of engaged and visible boards in maintaining investor confidence, power price trends, how utilities can sustain investor confidence by tying equity raises to accretive growth opportunities, the role of power forward curves, best practices for managing earnings calls, and more. We greatly appreciate Neil and Carly for sharing their time and perspectives. For additional insights from Neil, we previously had the pleasure of hosting him on COBT in September 2022 (episode linked here). To start the show, Mike Bradley highlighted that the 10yr bond yield has plunged to its lowest level (~4.2%) of President Trump's second term. Bond markets are growing increasingly concerned that Canadian, Chinese & Mexican tariffs will lead to retaliatory measures against the U.S. which could impact/slow U.S. economic growth. He noted that bonds are now dialing in three interest rate cuts for 2025, and that on the broader equity market front, equities have become increasingly more volatile. He discussed the big intraday volatility on Tuesday in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (~750-point intraday swing) and that the S&P 500 was down ~3% over the last week (due to souring investor sentiment) and was approaching technically oversold territory. On the crude oil market front, WTI price slid to ~$68/bbl this week (approaching low-end of its 6mo trading range) due to OPEC+ unexpectedly signaling its intention to begin unwinding long-held oil production cuts, beginning in April. If OPEC+ does follow through with oil production increases, as planned, then it'll further widen the 2025 global oil surplus unless its offset by yet unannounced Iranian sanctions by the U.S. On the Energy equity front, the YTD performance dispersion in the Energy sector, and especially
On today's episode, we break down earnings from Nvidia amid concerns about slowing spending on AI technology and the potential impact of US tariffs. We speak with Angelo Zino, Vice President of Equity Research at CFRA. Plus - a look at how Chinese tech stocks are offering investors an alternative to the Magnificent Seven. The down-to-the-deadline nature of Trump's trade policy has created market uncertainty. For every survey completed, Morgan Stanley will donate $25 toward their important work. Thanks for your time and support. On to the show… Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Sheets, Head of Corporate Credit Research at Morgan Stanley. Today I'm going to talk about a potential silver lining to the significant uptick in uncertainty around U.S. trade policy. It's Wednesday, February 12th at 2pm in London. One of the nuances of our market view is that we think credit spreads remain tight despite rising levels of corporate confidence and activity. We think these things can co-exist, at least temporarily, because the level of corporate activity is still so low, and so it could rise quite a bit and still only be in-line with the long-term trend. And so while more corporate activity and aggression is usually a negative for lenders and drives credit spreads wider, we don't think it's quite one yet. But maybe there is even less tension in these views than we initially thought. The first four weeks of the new U.S. Administration have seen a flurry of policy announcements on tariffs. This has meant a lot for investors to digest and discuss, but it's meant a lot less to actual market prices. Since the inauguration, U.S. stocks and yields are roughly unchanged. That muted reaction may be because investors assume that, in many cases, these policies will be delayed, reversed or modified. For example, announced tariffs on Mexico and Canada have been delayed. A key provision concerning smaller shipments from China has been paused. So far, this pattern actually looks very consistent with the framework laid out by my colleagues Michael Zezas and Ariana Salvatore from the Morgan Stanley Public Policy team: fast announcements of action, but then much slower ultimate implementation. Yet while markets may be dismissing these headlines for now, there are signs that businesses are taking them more seriously. Per news reports, U.S. Merger and Acquisition activity in January just suffered its lowest level of activity since 2015. Many factors could be at play. But it seems at least plausible that the “will they, won't they” down-to-the-deadline nature of trade policy has increased uncertainty, something businesses generally don't like when they're contemplating big transformative action. And for lenders maybe that's the silver lining. We've been thinking that credit in 2025 would be a story of timing this steadily rising wave of corporate aggression. But if that wave is delayed, debt levels could end up being lower, bond issuance could be lower, and spread levels – all else equal – could be a bit tighter. Corporate caution isn't everywhere. In sectors that are seen as multi-year secular trends, such as AI data centers, investment plans continue to rise rapidly, with our colleagues in Equity Research tracking over $320bn of investment in 2025. But for activity that is more economically sensitive, uncertainty around trade policy may be putting companies on the back foot. That isn't great for business; but, temporarily, it could mean a better supply/demand balance for those that lend to them. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the podcast, help us make it even more valuable to you. Share your feedback on the show at morganstanley.com/podcast-survey. Or head to the episode notes for the survey link.

Some have called this the weirdest housing market in recent history due to the unusual mix of high interest rates and declining affordability. And yet, we still have record high home prices across the 20 largest housing markets in the country. This month, we're diving into the U.S. housing market, a topic very relevant to many investors given a house is often the largest single asset one owns. In this episode, we're excited to shed light on the US housing market, what makes it challenging, what makes it unusual, and what needs to change for it to improve. We're joined by Preston Caldwell, Morningstar's Chief US Economist and Brian Bernard, Director of Equity Research specializing in the industrial sector, which includes homebuilders.
Pat Dorsey visits Google to discuss his book “The Little Book that Builds Wealth”. Over time, most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. In this Talk, he discusses these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at his firm Dorsey Asset Management. Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. He has also served as the Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar's equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar's economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Originally published in January of 2015. Mitchel Penn, Managing Director of Equity Research at Oppenheimer and Co., says that while business development companies (BDCs) have struggled this year, they are positioned well to ride out the changing interest rate cycle. He says that when the Federal Reserve starts cutting interest rates, he expects BDCs to see higher fee income, though some of that could be offset by a higher level of defaults. However, he notes that because those defaults are a hangover from high-rate conditions, they have already been priced into many portfolios, creating a cushion against potential credit losses. Penn also discusses the kinds of BDCs that balance out the current risks and that historically have generated high returns on equity with low credit losses, naming several BDCs that fit that description.
