Sweatin' with the oldies…that's all we can say. This week's Deeper Roots focuses on both the vintage and the contemporary performances by women who took on the rockabilly mantle. While a male-dominated genre, particularly when the boys (and record companies) were chasing the next Elvis, gave us hundreds (thousands?) of gyrating hips and raw rock in the form of pounding piano, thrashing guitar and duck tails, there was barely enough room for the ladies. But we've made some room on this morning's show where we'll be featuring the likes of Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Laura Lee Perkins and a bevy of brash rocking women from the early days of rock ‘n roll. We'll do our best to balance the show with late breakers of the rockabilly kind:  Kim Lenz, Linda Gail Lewis, Imelda May and Rosie Flores are some of the contemporary sounds we'll be hearing from on this September morning. Tune in for a wild two hours…guaranteed.

Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Brought to you by The Publicity Works Agency specializing in authors & musicians We shine only when We make you shine! Call us today at 941-567-6193 At a time when most female artists were content with crooning sappy love songs for mainstream audiences, vocalist and pianist Linda Gail Lewis was following her own muse, singing rowdy and rousing versions of early rock classics like “C.C. Rider,” “Jim Dandy” and “Baby (You've Got What It Takes).” The latter track might hint at what drove Lewis to blaze her own musical path as it is a duet with Lewis's brother, well-known raconteur and rabble rouser Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis would go on to record several times with her brother but also branched out to record several solo albums throughout the years as well as a 2000 album with Van Morrison and, more recently, has appeared on albums by Robert Gordon and Ann-Margret!   But it's Gail's early tracks that truly showcase her historic importance as a pioneer of rockabilly music, and these tracks have now been collected on a brand-new compilation, entitled Early Sides 1963-1973, giving fans of vintage rock and rockabilly a chance to discover her unique talents. The audio has been completely remastered by guitar icon Danny B. Harvey who had this to say about the collection “It's a well-known fact that from 1961 until the late ‘70s, Linda Gail Lewis sang and stood beside her big brother Jerry Lee Lewis, both onstage and in the studio. Not as well-known is during that time she also managed to record her own amazing solo singles in Memphis, Nashville and LA with legendary musicians & producers like Scotty Moore, Jerry Reed, Harold Bradley, Reggie Young & of course her brother backing her.” Please welcome American singer, songwriter, pianist, author and Sister of Rock & Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis…  LINDA GAIL LEWIS to Interviewing the Legends PURCHASE EARLY SIDES 1963-1973 BY LINDA GAIL LEWIS AT AMAZON.COM Vintage early recordings from a true pioneering female rock artist, and sister of Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Gail Lewis! These early singles represent a diverse mix of musical styles from rockabilly to country to good old-fashioned Rock 'n' Roll! Includes two tracks with special guest Jerry Lee Lewis! Full color gatefold jacket with detailed personnel credits and vintage photos! ALSO WILD! WILD! WILD! Robbie Fulks & Linda Gail Lewis Also available at amazon.com   PURCHASE The Devil, Me, and Jerry Lee Released – October 28, 1998 by Linda Gail Lewis (Author) available at amazon.com "Jerry Lee is not a candy ass," writes Lewis in this affectionate memoir of her life with her brother, rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis. What she's saying is hardly news? given that Jerry Lee's nickname is "The Killer," he hardly needs such a defense? but the author writes in a vivid, colloquial voice that makes old news seem almost fresh. Though Lewis's book abounds with colorful boasts regarding the sturdy Lewis libido (apparently shared by Jerry Lee, the author and their cousin Jimmy Swaggart), fans will learn little they didn't already know about the man who graced the world with the hit "Great Balls of Fire." Lewis is charming when she describes her fits of wanderlust, as when she left her family to tour the country with her older brother and his band, but one wishes she had applied her talent for brisk, direct prose to telling the story of the balancing act she has had to perform as both a mother and a traveling musician (which she only briefly addresses). Lewis also pads her narrative with worn-out anecdotes, recalling the moment when John Lennon kissed Jerry Lee's feet and the performance in which an uninvited and unwanted Janis Joplin joined Jerry Lee onstage. Lewis's appealing, plainspoken style notwithstanding, this slim family album will be appreciated by diehard fans and quickly forgotten by everyone else.   FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LINDA GAIL LEWIS VISIT www.lglmusic.com Official website https://lglmusic.bandcamp.com/ LGL Music Bandcamp www.facebook.com/lglmusic Facebook https://twitter.com/lglmusic Twitter www.instagram.com/explore/tags/lindagaillewis/?hl=en Instagram   LINDA GAIL LEWIS TOURING 2022 LGL live 7/29/2022 Dan's Silverleaf Denton, TX 8/12/2022 Lonesome Rose San Antonio, TX 8/13/2022 Continental Houston, TX 8/14/2022 TBA 8/16/2022 Rooster Blues House Oxford, Ms 8/17/2022 tba 8/18/2022 star bar atlanTa, ga 8/19/2022 tipsy burro saloon charlotte, nc 8/20/2022 Friday's Creek Owings, MD 8/21/2022 Buckley's Long Island, NY 8/23/2022 Cafe Nine New Haven, CT 8/25/2022 Dobbs Philadelphia, PA 8/26/2022 The Palace Theater Danbury, CT 8/27/2022 Lenny's at Hawkes Plaza Westbrook, ME 8/28/2022 Terryville Fairgrounds Plymouth, CT 8/30/2022 Beachland Ballroom & Tavern Cleaveland, OH 8/30/2022 souThgate house revival Newport, ky 9/01/2022 rock'n'roll cafe memphis, tn 9/04/2022 Antone's Austin, TX   LINDA GAIL LEWIS Discography Albums Year Album 1969 The Two Sides of Linda Gail Lewis Together (with Jerry Lee Lewis) 1990 International Affair 1991 Do You Know Rockin' With Linda – Recorded Live in London 1992 I'll Take Memphis 1995 Love Makes the Difference 1999 Linda Gail Lewis 2000 You Win Again (with Van Morrison) 2001 Rock 'n' Roll Special (with The Firebirds) 2002 Out of the Shadows Rock 'n' Roll 2004 Boogie Woogie Country Gal Lie and Deny 2005 Me and the Boys in the Band 2006 Rock, Roll & Remember Hungry Hill 2007 Dazed and Confused Jabalaya You Were There The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll Live in France 2010 You & Me & Sweet Rock 'n' Roll – Best from Sweden 2015 Heartbreak Highway Gas Station Flowers Hard Rockin' Woman 2018 Wild! The two-time Grammy nominee and alt.country pioneer joins us to discuss his career as an eclectic and fiercely independent singer songwriter. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul chat about the classic conundrum of getting annoyed when your favorite artists get too popular, but also getting annoyed when people don't catch on their greatness. PART TWO - 8:20 mark Paul plays a friend's brand new single for Scott and the guys talk about Pearl Snap Studios, Patreon, and how a lucky listener can win a free hat. PART THREE - 12:59 mark Robbie stops by Songcraft World Headquarters to chat about one of his earliest songs--a super twisted parody of a Red Sovine classic; why he never moved to Nashville; how he got a record deal by writing a manifesto; why putting an album's songs in the proper sequence is important; the song he wrote for his celebrity crush; the concept album he never made; the insider details he learned from Tom Brumley; and which of his songs he doesn't want to play anymore. Plus, Robbie performs live and acoustic! ABOUT ROBBIE FULKS Singer, recording artist, instrumentalist, composer and songwriter Robbie Fulks’s most recent solo album, Upland Stories, was named among the year’s best by NPR and Rolling Stone, and was nominated for a Best Folk Album Grammy. Additionally, his “Alabama at Night” earned a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Song. Though his tastes are wide-ranging, Fulks is steeped in country, bluegrass, and folk traditions with an often irreverent sensibility that can range from hilarious to heart breaking.  Robbie’s first two albums, Country Love Songs and South Mouth, helped define the “alternative country” movement of the 1990s, while subsequent releases found him exploring pop and rock territory. His recent work is more reflective and acoustic-oriented, though he occasionally diverges to pursue eclectic projects such as his 2018 duet album with Linda Gail Lewis, Wild! Wild! Wild! Robbie’s songs have been covered by Sam Bush, Kelly Hogan, Andrew Bird, Mollie O’Brien, Rosie Flores, John Cowan, Pinmonkey, Lone Justice, Old 97s, and others. Additionally, his writing on music and life has appeared in GQ, Blender, the Chicago Reader, DaCapo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies, and other outlets. Besides country and bluegrass music, Robbie is fiercely fond of—in his own words—Charles Mingus, P.G. Wodehouse, quantum mechanics, his wife Donna, comedy in almost all forms, cooking, swimming laps, the past, Arthur Schopenhauer, Universal horror movies, his grandson and even his sons, coastal towns in the off-season, and rye whiskey, though in nothing like that order.

Gad Elmaleh has a fascinating story. He was born in Casablanca, went to college in Montreal, and then moved to France where he became a stand-up superstar. Three years ago, he moved from the place where he is most popular to America, where he was somewhat known but not a huge star. He was still learning English, and his goal was to get good enough to be able to do an hour in English. He accomplished that quickly, releasing his American Dream special on Netflix earlier this year.  This interview wasn't meant to be a podcast episode. I spoke with Elmaleh a few weeks ago for The Boston Globe, since his The Dream Tour was headed here. But after we were done, I realized there was no fat on this. It was a good 45-minute conversation, with an amusing starting point and a definite closing point. And we covered a wide range of topics. Sure, Elmaleh is selling out theaters all over the world, but what he really wants is his own talk show. We talked about the difficulties in trying to do stand-up in a language you are still learning, and Elmaleh says he's only at about 80 percent in terms of being able to execute the ideas in his head. We also talked about what it means to be considered an “American style” comedian in France, and what the scene is like there. Plus, I learned he's a drummer, which is a plus in my book. He is a delightful person to talk to, and I'm hoping I can catch up with him a bit down the road, when he feels he has finally “made it” in America, to see what his perspective is then.  This episode's featured track is a collaboration between Robbie Fulks, who was a podcast guest on EP8, and Linda Gail Lewis. I got to see Fulks and Lewis live about a month ago in Boston, and it was pure joy. I'm going to be doing a full review of the album on the blog, but I'll say here that Wild! Wild! Wild! is a treat. Fulks is a great foil for Lewis, and man do they have fun together onstage, and you can hear it in the studio, as well. There are some hardcore honky tonk songs, like “I Just Lived A Country Song,” jazzier numbers like “Your Red Wagon,” and ass-shaking, piano beating rock and roll, like this, the title track. When I spoke with Fulks and Lewis after the show, they both seemed amenable to collaborating again in the future. And I hope for all of our sakes they do.

This week circles back one final time to AmericanaFest 2018, where a global community dedicated to American roots music gathered and networked and listened to some of the world's best music. Amy Helm, out solo after a decade with Olabelle and working with her late great father Levon, is an exceptional singer with the new album This Too Shall Light. Veteran alt-country and bluegrass singer songwriter Robbie Fulks showcased his new rollicking boogie woogie rock and roll project with pianist and singer Linda Gail Lewis, Jerry Lee's sister. Their duo album is called Wild Wild Wild. And rounding out the hour is emerging Canadian folk artist Kaia Kater.  She's on a remarkable journey of identity and creativity, and she is newly signed to the iconic Smithsonian Folkways record label. Her album Grenades is out in a matter of days.
