Episode 2 of The Salience Podcast features Greg Layton. Greg is the bestselling author of Chief Maker and is the CEO of a company of the same name. Greg has a really tight niche in the talent development market focussing on helping people in organisations who are perhaps under the most pressure - the Senior Managers or General Managers who I describe as the meat in the sandwich. They have to deal with pressure from the Chiefs above, and staff and other managers below, and breaking into the C-suite is tough. And once they get there, my experience is that the Chief role can offer some very unexpected challenges. Find out more about Chief Maker here. For more information about The Salience Podcast and Frontline Mind please visit our website at https://www.frontlinemind.com/the-salience-podcast/ You can also sign up for our newsletter here https://frontlinemind.us17.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=ff181d12c77d7cea5f19a2c48&id=fd7357f614

It's the absence of something in our life and how our life changes because of that loss. And it takes many, many forms. It could be, like I'm actually getting really old, so it's the lost of my youth, it can be the loss of a particular relationship, it could be the loss of a particular dream. Loss takes a million forms. And that doesn't make anyone of them, is any less, or more, important.   And there's a beautiful piece of desiderata, which talks about, "Take kindly the council of youth, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit, to shield you in sudden misfortune.” And I think it's important to acknowledge that grief isn't something you can plan for. And it's two o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon, or it's the midnight phone call. It can be sprung on you ... The time is not a think that grief controls. It just happens.   And grief is an internal process. And we'll talk a bit more about that later on. But it's not always visible from the outside on others. So, whilst people may be able to put on a steely exterior, they're still grieving on the inside, as it is an internal process.   Sometimes we associate grief with a sense of weakness, or a sense of vulnerability, but I think an important thing ... As you experience grief, you sort of understand, it's a natural thing. It's something you can't really avoid. And everybody goes through grief in some way after a loss. Be it a loss of health, it could be a loss of a relationship, it could be a loss of a job, or a loss of friend. Everyone goes through some sort of grief after that loss. And it's a totally normal thing to happen.   We cover:  1. What is grief 2. When do we get it wrong 3. Some steps to follow to help 4. How it relates in the context of Universal Man   For full details check out www.universalman.org/grief

Welcome to DREAM THINK DO, buddy Mitch, thanks, mate. Great to be here. I love it, man. All right, so I want to talk about your book. I want to talk about the power of routine, all the stuff you do for managers and leaders. But it's my show, so I get to go wherever I want. And I want to go to the Shaolin monks you hung out within China. How the heck did that happen and what was that like? Well, it started out as a bit of a journey. One question I've had since the early days is, “Who out there is an outlier in performance?” I've seen the Shaolin guys on the telly and even at a circus kind of show once. I always thought they were out of this world. They were sticking swords in their bellies and all sorts of stuff, but it wasn't hurting them. So, who are these guys and how the hell do they do that? About six months later, I started doing Kung fu feverishly where I was living at the time. Six months after that, I found myself up to my knees in snow in the mountains in a remote part of China at a very small Shaolin Monastery and academy. I was welcomed into this little Shaolin school, and I can tell you now, it was like going back in time, it really was. The training was 1000 years old, and just nothing seemed to have changed. We trained 12 hours a day, every single day, dawn till dusk. We didn't just do Kung fu, which I found very interesting. They started off the day with Tai Chi and meditation. Even though Tai Chi is actually a form of martial art, the training is that it was a calming process and balancing the body and the mind and the spirit to begin the day. Throughout the day, we did everything from Qigong to power stretching and conditioning to Sanda, which is China's kickboxing, and also Kung fu. It was dedication to your art form all day, every day. You were there for three months? Three months. Yeah, three months. Interesting - I was never injured, and we did some crazy stuff. An example of one of the things I do is we did this thing called power stretching. I love to tell this story. Instead of a brief, gentle stretch, you get nice and limber and warmed up. And then you'd get into a splits position, with your feet out wide. You might. I don't. Yeah. I truly do. My first day there, I couldn't do splits. I don't know. I was reasonably flexible, but no, I couldn't do the splits. So, I'm in this vulnerable position with my feet out wide, and my hands on the ground. So, my back is parallel to the ground. And a guy comes in, and he starts sitting on my back because he thinks I'm not deep enough into this stretch. And then another guy, because now I'm finding that like a really difficult stretch, he starts kicking my feet up. Wow. It gets to be such a brutal stretch that I can't breathe. I'm in that much pain with the level of stretch; I can't breathe at all. I'm gasping. And then you actually at a certain point, you stop breathing. And then my shifu, my master who they've got a few key things there. One,

In this episode Greg Layton and Damien Price talk what labels are and how are they limiting you and others. All of us have reacted to a label someone else has placed upon us. A small inner voice says, “Nah, that's not me!” We have all also done that very same thing to others. We have introduced people, boxed by a label that is our dominant narrative linked to that person and they, in their turn, are inwardly reacting to our introduction! In this episode we will explore the various types of labels, where they come from and how to grow into the ‘who' of our lives and not be boxed by the ‘what'!

In this episode Greg Layton and Damien Price talk about Crossroads. A crossroad is significant juncture in your life where something has to change. This might be a relationship, a job or where you live etc. A crossroad approaches when what has been happening can no longer continue and action must be taken for you to be truly happy. It can often feel like one chapter is closing and another needs to open.

Dan outlines how important it is to stay the course, keep at it, leverage your networks and be grateful for what is around you. Dan covers 10 key topics throughout the podcast: 1.Stop spending all your time just working on your division and work on the organisation with the CEO 2.You have to demonstrate that you work for the betterment of the entire organisation 3.If you get down into the detail, you'll just annoy your people and hold them back 4.The role of the leader is to get a good team around you, set some good parameters, ask them how their going to achieve the goal, then give them some space. 5.We often waste time on developing the wrong people, when we should be cutting them. If after a month or two if you have a bad feeling about someone, its rare that they will come good. Look at how they manage people. A lot people are great atmanaging up, but kick down. 6.If you tolerate poor behaviour from one of your leaders then you're complicit in it. Let someone tell his or her story first. Be respectful. 7.We have a system that we stick to for family balance 8.Both times he got knocked back for exec team roles, something good came of it. Make sure you respond well to disappointments. 9.You've got to get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. You do have to steel yourself for them. You've got tobe prepared and have examples. 10.Very rarely will people say no when you ask them to be a mentor. We discuss many topics like: - A manager is someone who achieves things through others. - Be humble and maintain fierce resolve - Deciding who is on the bus. And you've got to decide before you know where the bus is - going. To pick the people that are going to be with you on the journey. And decide where you're going together. - When you're acting up in a role don't make this mistake that this is part time. Act as if you have the full authority of the role. It is full commitment. - Unlocking human potential is what will keep you excited everyday. - Have a reptuation of working well in teams and getting things done. - No triangles. If two people keep coming to you with their problems with each other get them together in a room to talk and remove yourself from the conversation. - It's not about the technical. It is always about the people. - Whenever you get a chance to relieve, you double down your effort and exceed expectations - I always believe that even in the worst problem there is always a solution there waiting for you.
