Today on “Post Reports,” the story of Ashraf Omar Alakhras and his family farm and an exclusive investigation into the destruction of food and agriculture in Gaza. Read more: Since Israel's invasion of Gaza more than seven months ago, Gaza's food and agricultural system is on the brink of collapse. Airstrikes and bulldozers have razed farms and orchards across the region, according to a Washington Post investigation comparing satellite imagery before and after the start of the war. Experts say that it could take decades to reconstruct what had already been a vulnerable but dynamic food system. But beyond those satellite images is the story of Ashraf Omar Alakhras and his family's farm. For months, the Post's visual forensics reporter, Nilo Tabrizy, has been corresponding with Alakhras about what has happened and what it will take to rebuild. Today's show was produced by Elana Gordon. It was mixed by Sean Carter and edited by Monica Campbell. Thanks to Reem Akkad, Peter Finn, Leila Barghouty and Elyse Samuels. India is rising as a competitive global power. It is also joining a club of nations that aggressively target dissidents on foreign soil. Today on “Post Reports,” we dive into India's assassination plots.Read more: It was a split-screen moment: As the Biden administration hosted a White House state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, an officer in India's intelligence service was relaying instructions to a team hired to kill one of Modi's most vocal critics in the United States. The assassination plot was part of several repressive acts targeting Indian diaspora populations in Asia, Europe and North America, according to officials in the United States and in India. Greg Miller, a Washington Post investigative foreign correspondent, breaks down how a team of Post reporters have probed a global surge in aggression against dissident groups.Amid shifting geopolitical forces, Miller explains how the United States and other Western governments have struggled to stem this repressive tide. India, for example, has faced few consequences for its use of violence against dissident groups, in part because the United States and its allies want closer ties with India in a new era of competition with China. A high-profile prison escape. A TV station takeover. An assault on police. Today on “Post Reports,” how powerful gangs in Ecuador pushed this historically peaceful nation to the brink and led its new president to declare war. Read more:Ecuador has long been an ecotourism hub and a safe haven, mostly immune from the guerilla violence endured for decades in neighboring Colombia and Peru. But the country has experienced a shift in recent years, becoming a center for drug trafficking and organized crime, as global demand for cocaine surges to new levels. On Jan. 9, this new reality came into full focus through coordinated attacks that shook the country to its core, culminating on live TV for all of Ecuador and the world to witness. The Post's Bogotá bureau chief, Samantha Schmidt, and Ecuadorian journalist Arturo Torres have spent months reconstructing what exactly happened that day: how the chaos unfolded, the extent to which gangs infiltrated institutions, and President Daniel Noboa's controversial response, giving unprecedented power to the military. Piecing together the details through exclusive interviews and footage revealed a deeper truth, Schmidt tells “Post Reports,” which is that the crisis in Ecuador isn't an outlier. What happened that day and the complicated aftermath represent “a canary in the coal mine” moment and a warning for all of Latin America. Today's show was produced by Elana Gordon. Hidden in the archives of the Library of Congress were two memoirs of an American reporter, Herbert Corey who covered the World War I from its start in 1914 up through the Paris Peace Conference in 1919-1920. He was the American reporter who covered the war the longest, from a full three-years before participation by the United States. The memoirs were discovered by two authors, historians and journalists, John M. Hamilton, and Peter Finn. They decided to edit the memoirs, annotate them with notes and footnotes and put the memoirs in perspective for a 21st Century audience. Herbert Corey's Great War: A memoir of WWI by the American Who Saw if All was released in June 2022 by the LSU Press. It contains first-hand accounts of Corey's adventures covering both sides of the war from the German frontlines to the trenches of the allies. He covered the angst and travails of the foot-soldiers and the war lives of non-combatants. He viewed the war from nine European countries as he traveled for the Associated Newspaper chain. Corey's memoir reflects the many obstacles that reporters faced in covering WWI, especially censorship from the Allies. He also was a keen observer of misinformation campaigns by the British and others to urge the Americans to get involved in the war. John M. Hamilton is the Breazeale Professor of Journalism in the Manship School of Communication at LSU. He also is a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and an award-winning author.

This was the challenge that Peter Finn, Ireland's Favourite TV Builder and one of the Constructive Voices presenters, faced a while ago.Ireland's Favourite TV Builder's Labour of Love for the Book of KellsYes, we are talking about The Book of Kells with its elaborate spiral and interlace patterns, images of animals and birds, which is housed in Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland. The Book of Kells was probably created by monks at the monastery of Iona, off the coast of Scotland. It is unclear how the book made its way to Ireland, where it was eventually donated to the University of Dublin in 1661.Today, the Book of Kells is on display at Trinity College Library, where visitors can see its ornate pages up close. Despite its age, the Book of Kells remains an awe-inspiring work of art that continues to fascination scholars and laypeople alike.Hear this unique interview on Episode 41.Peter Finn, Ireland's Favourite TV Builder:“I'm sure everybody's heard of the Book of Kells. It's the oldest Christian scripture in existence in the world. We were given the project of creating a protection mobile around the Book of Kells, which was a labour of love.”The Book of Kells receives over a million visitors each year. In fact, in 2021, after it reopened after COVID restrictions, 78,000 people visited the Book of Kells between May and October.Peter Finn…blend the old with the new:“You have to have an eye to be able to blend the old with the new in as seamless away as you possibly can. And it takes skill and it takes the right people to do it. It's not the type of construction where you can get a load of lads in on price, and push them and force them to get a job done in a set period of time.”So it seems that you know what you are doing, what could possibly go wrong?Peter Finn…a skeleton in the closet:“The worst thing that can happen is you actually find a literal skeleton in the closet because it means everything has to stop and you have to rethink what you're doing….”Listen to this fascinating interview with Pete The Builder.

She introduces me to Gertrude Sanford Legendre, which unravels a whole whack load of other topics, and uncovers connections to so many well and lesser-known topics and people, including the OSS, the Nazis, missing women, Mount Holly Plantation (sacred plants again), Philip Barry (playwriter of Holiday), and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Along with her interesting connections and wild life stories (including a kidnapping by the Nazis and a possibly unrealistic escape), she was a spy, explorer, big-game hunter, environmentalist, plantation owner, and more. Different parts of her family tree also raise attention; her father is from the Sanford bloodline, a political dynasty family similar to the Bushes! Another rabbit hole is apparently her daughter, Bakara Legendre who, similar to her mother, was a woman of many hats, but most interesting is her placement and photos/video she took at the Robert F. Kennedy assassination! We also discuss some famous cases of missing girls, including Madeline McCann, Brittanee Drexel, and Shannon McConaughey and some of the many interesting twists in their stories. We watch and react to the 1931 cartoon ‘Bimbo's Initiation' and make tons of off-the-top symbolic connections to the occult, various conspiracies, and warning signs, some that are very weird. Missy shares with us a crazy plantation map she owns from 1936 that helps connect family bloodlines relevant to some of the topics we discuss. We also discuss Decentraland, the new virtual reality craze that us shaking up the world of crypto currency. Finally, we make some conclusions and put out some theories to tie everything up until next time! The best one is Missy's theory on the missing girls (and the rare eye conditions), which ties in the Legendre family and the plantations, and involves them being trained as priestesses. This is another wild ride so sit back and enjoy this episode of Divulgence with me, Jordan Vezeau!  **Being a brand-new podcast, all support is appreciated, any shape or form. Henry McDonald talks to sustainable architect, Daniel Jaconetti, about his work and how Europe compares to the USA when it comes to green building. Daniel's passion lies in biomimetic concepts and how technologies inspired by nature can create responsive environmental that coexist with their ecologies. His chat with Henry is a real eye-opener.“If I were looking to buy a new home right? I would be looking for something that was maybe net-zero or Passive House. Solar panels on the roof for sure. Right. And there are other people that just seem to have this rebellion against it. And I think it might be because there's a misconception that being pro-environment pro sustainability is anti-business.”Daniel Jaconetti, National Sustainable Design Leader at HEDPete The Builder discusses the day-to-day reality of the industry's challenges of a shortage of both materials and workers.“I've got a client A, B and C they all want me to do work at the same time. They all want to use materials that I'm not even sure that I can get my hands on them. And when I do get my hands on them, actually, I'm not sure what the price of those materials are going to be. I'm going to need three different crews to work on the three different projects and I'm not sure if I can even get two crews never mind three crews. It's a challenge there's no doubt about it, you know.”Peter Finn a.k.a. Pete The BuilderThis episode of Constructive Voices is sponsored by Viewpoint, a Trimble Company.
