This year's Singapore Fintech Festival surrounds six major themes that will frame 2025. At the front and centre of discussions is the Roadmap for AI and Quantum. The technology is said to hold the potential to radically change the financial services industry, with an EY analysis suggesting that rethinking the financial institution with Gen AI at its core has the potential to create US$200 billion to US$400 billion by 2023, with productivity gains reaching up to 30 per cent by 2028. In this panel discussion on the Roadmap for AI and Quantum, we looked at where fintech players are at right now when it comes down to generative AI adoption and what the road to achieving an AI-embedded future looks like for them. We also dived into emerging risks surrounding AI and challenges surrounding the adoption of quantum computing. What You'll Learn: In this episode, hosts Shayne Daughenbaugh, Catherine McDonald, and guest Art Byrne discuss Lean strategy and its extension beyond manufacturing as well as its potential to transform any business by enhancing overall operations. By eliminating waste, delivering consistent customer value, stimulating growth, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Lean principles enable companies to be more responsive to customer needs and increase wealth for stakeholders. About the Guest: Art Byrne began his lean journey in January 1982 as a General Manager at GE, leading the first just-in-time [lean] implementation there. As a Group Executive, he initiated lean at The Danaher Corporation. As CEO of the Wiremold Company, he led a lean transformation that increased enterprise value by nearly 2,500% in nine years and won a Shingo Prize. As an Operating Partner at J W Childes Associates, he implemented lean across their private equity portfolio. Art authored The Lean Turnaround and The Lean Turnaround Action Guide, both Shingo Prize winners. He is a member of the Shingo Academy, the Industry Week Magazine Manufacturing Hall of Fame, and the AME Hall of Fame. In the latest episode of the People Solve Problems podcast, host Jamie Flinchbaugh sits down with Art Byrne, the retired CEO of The Wiremold Company. Art's profound influence on the lean community is well-known, having introduced lean principles to over 30 companies from his positions as CEO and author of seminal works such as The Lean Turnaround, The Lean Turnaround Action Guide, and The Lean Turnaround Answer Book. Art's journey with lean management began during his first General Manager role at General Electric Company. He later introduced lean to the Danaher Corporation as a Group Executive. However, his most notable achievement was leading The Wiremold Company through a lean transformation that increased the company's enterprise value by nearly 2,500% over nine years. This conversation covers the principles, challenges, and successes Art experienced throughout his career. Art discusses the purpose and genesis of his latest book, The Lean Turnaround Answer Book, which compiles his insights and solutions to common lean questions accumulated over decades. He explains that the book is structured as a reference guide, addressing both the foundational concepts of lean and the practical, day-to-day challenges companies face during their lean journey. Art emphasizes that lean is not merely a cost-reduction strategy but a comprehensive, strategic approach to running a business better than the competition. One of the key points Art makes is the importance of leadership in lean transformation. He illustrates this with a story from his time at Wiremold, where he challenged the team to reduce the changeover time of a machine from 14 hours to under 10 minutes. Through persistent effort and kaizen events, they achieved a changeover time of just six minutes. This dramatic improvement not only boosted operational efficiency but also significantly enhanced employee morale and engagement. Art highlights that challenging teams to achieve seemingly impossible goals can result in extraordinary outcomes and deep buy-in from employees. Art also addresses the critical role of problem-solving and learning in lean management. He contrasts the traditional approach of lengthy problem analysis and planning with the lean approach of immediate, hands-on experimentation, and iteration. By empowering employees to stop production lines to solve problems on the spot, companies can create a culture of continuous improvement and learning. This approach not only resolves issues more effectively but also fosters a deeper understanding of the processes and a stronger commitment to ongoing improvement. Throughout the episode, Art underscores the necessity for CEOs to be actively involved in leading lean transformations. He believes that only through visible, committed leadership can organizations overcome resistance and achieve lasting change. Art's experiences and insights offer invaluable lessons for any leader looking to implement lean principles and drive their organization towards greater efficiency and competitiveness. In this episode of Better Cities by Design, Neil Arckless, Group Executive for Development at Lendlease is our guest. We talk with Neil about the sustainable redevelopment of Darling Square in Sydney, Australia. Darling Square, which is part of the Darling Harbour section of the Australian capital, has a rich history. This area was originally home to the Aboriginal people, the Gadigal, who lived on this land for thousands of years and continue to play an important role in Sydney. In the 1900s, Darling Harbour was an industrial zone, which was later converted into public space. This happened in the 1980s, at a time when the area had essentially been abandoned. As a result, a pedestrian and tourist precinct was established. Darling Harbour also hosted part of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. But over the ensuing decade, Darling Harbour had once again lost its luster and was no longer adequately serving the people of Sydney. And this led to a second redevelopment, led by Lendlease, with support from Arcadis.Join Host Davion Ford and Neil, as they chat about the extraordinarily sustainable transformation of Darling Square from an underused part of Sydney, into a vibrant, mixed-use area, with residential, business, and commercial space for more than 4200 people. Neil talks about what led to the need to redevelop the area and how Lendlease approached this effort with an eye toward creating a space that residents could take ownership of. Neil discusses the complex task of carrying out the regeneration within the central business district, without fundamentally disrupting city life and how this is one of most walkable and highly rated sustainability projects ever delivered in Australia.

Good Dirt: Conversations with Leaders in Real Estate & Beyond
Arthur Jemison – City of Boston/Boston Planning & Development Agency Arthur Jemison is the City of Boston's Chief of Planning and the Director of the Boston Planning and Development Agency (‘BPDA'). A nationally respected public-private development leader, Chief Jemison came “back” to the City of Boston with 28 years of planning and affordable housing expertise, working with community members to create equitable places in Detroit, MI, Washington D.C. and Boston, MA. Most recently, Jemison served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), where he led the Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) and served as the policy lead and HUD partner for American Cities, Counties, States, and other local units of government. Jemison joined HUD from the City of Detroit, where he was Group Executive for Planning, Housing & Development, leading the City's efforts toward equitable growth. In early 2014, Jemison was recruited to lead the Housing & Revitalization Department for the City of Detroit, to assist as the City recovered from bankruptcy. In that capacity, Jemison led strategy, deployment and management of municipal housing policy and HUD entitlement funding. Before going to Detroit, Jemison held leadership positions at the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) for Massachusetts under Governor Deval Patrick. Prior to that, he held a variety of public and private-sector positions, including service at Massachusetts Port Authority, Boston Housing Authority, the then-Boston Redevelopment Authority, and in private development work at GLC Development Resources, as well as in the District of Columbia.Jemison has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He also holds a Master of City Planning degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellow. Jemison is also a 2021 Spirit of Detroit Award winner, a 2016 Michigan Chronicle Men / Women of Excellence awardee, and a member of the team recognized with the 2013 Robert Larson Public Policy Award for Workforce Housing from the Urban Land Institute, on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our conversation with Chief Jemison starts with his familial roots and upbringing in Detroit, MI and Amherst, MA and his college days at UMass Amherst, where he was first introduced to economics, urban planning and public policy. Through a fellowship opportunity for under-represented students, Arthur blazed his trail to MIT where he earned his Master in City Planning (MCP) degree, and turned his focus to real estate's private sector, working initially in Miami for Arthur Andersen doing development feasibility consulting before following his calling in the public domain. Much of our discussion with Chief Jemison, not surprisingly, focuses on the Boston market and his important work as the Director of the BPDA and as the City's Planning Chief. We enjoyed this candid discussion, in which Arthur stressed the importance of collaboration and cooperation between his team and the development community. We were encouraged by this discussion and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.For more information on the Boston Planning & Development Agency, please visit http://www.bostonplans.org/Mentioned in this Episode:What Arthur's Reading Right now: Small Mercies (Dennis Lehane)New Book Alert: Look for Me There (Luke Russert)Required RE Reading: The Reichmanns: Family, Faith, Fortune, and the Empire of Olympia & YorkTom Greeleytom.greeley@nmrk.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thomasgreeley/Mike Greeleymichael.greeley@nmrk.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelgreeley1/
